That bridge has become “iconic” in a sense and just proposing a removal would be quite the task. Realistically speaking, an underground passage would just flood at the first instance of rain. We’ve been shown time and again that the powers that be cannot design anything effectively. The workable solution I see here is the addition of a bus terminal (TTMC) at Tin factory stop, off the road, so pedestrians don’t crowd that divergence. If built at the base of the outer ring road flyover, even outstation buses can use them instead of stopping on the ramp
I laughed so hard at the “iconic” part. I don’t get why it has that tag. It’s ugly, built with low standards for its time and pose more problems than solutions. It looks straight out of the soviet era architecture which isn’t a compliment. Every time i look at this bridge a sense of dread takes over me due to its sad looks.
Since we all agree that autos cannot be touch by any politicians/police. Easy said than done, build underpass for pedestrian walking at multiple points. Traffic police to carry a lathi for 2 years to "teach" specific groups who don't obey the law.
As someone who lived in Europe and experienced how these things affect quality of life first hand, i am happy to see your channel, coz i think about these things everyday.
Exactly ...living here since 1 year I always feel why such small minute things are not thought of . Ex: every bus stop could be carved into the foot path like a curve so a bus can enter and leave without causing , improve the width of foot paths ,building a cycle only paths of atleast 3 feet width etc etc .They put so much thought into quality of life of a human
Keep up the great quality👍 As someone who lived in Germany for 12Y and moved back to Bangalore 3 months back, I see how dangerous the roads are! How irresponsibly everyone drives, how chaotic everything is! I didn’t realize this when I was teenager and was riding my Pulsar all over the city.
I have lived in Canada for 6 years and roundabouts create such smooth movement of traffic without long wait at traffic signals. But "Indians" do not know the concept of "yielding" to on-coming traffic or pedestrians. People here think that they are always in the right. That is something that needs to be educated to people living here.
The whole eastern section of ORR is a total mess, right from KR Puram junction, Marathahalli bridge, Sarjapur Junction, Agara junction, till Silk board.
@2:48 All the empty spaces around the dotted line belongs to ITI and Indian Railways. They won't give an inch of land. There are some points around the bridge where crossing road distance is less than 100Meters on a skywalk while on vehicle it's 2-3KMs, sometimes even more. Back then in 2003 it was iconic project which inaugurated the by then Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. There are places in the city where same Indian Railway tracks crossing are done with tunnels. There were talks to dismantle the bridge and do something like Hebbala flyover but I don't think that will happen considering the amount of traffic the flows through 24*7. Only the people staying around this area and on either side of Indian Railways upto Whitefield know the real pain of travelling between each sides.
All my homies hate the hanging bridge. So many problems with it. But unfortunately, a solution won't be easy here. Im trying to think of some ideas for this. The first thing that comes to mind is that this flyover has way too less of a gradient, which causes it to spread its footprint much longer on the ground. It's just 200m from the exit of the ORR ramp to the OMR ramp. If that becomes close to 500m, then vehicles have more time to merge and less conflict. Of course, this is only a bandaid solution and the ultimate goal should be to reduce the number of vehicles on this road/within the city. This one bridge ruins Tin Factory metro station, Tin Factory bus stop, KR Pura bus stop and station and fhe FoB can't connect to the railway station's FoB.
This is some really high quality content right here. Never really thought about this despite living very close to that area. You're really underrated mate.
I had to give-up cycling because of KR Puram and how dangerous it is to traverse through that region. Have seen terrible accidents because of cars speeding through an almost invisible speedbreaker. Then the underpass below the bridge is truly a maze that is as predictable as a Bangalorean autorickshaw. Truly a hellscape!
I'm seeing it from past 15 years. Crossing it everyday, Mahadevapura to Indiranagar. Same story. Back then we didn't had wide roads but the narrow point at K.R.Puram ticket counter where buses will stop anytime. Now the chaos multiplied. If only Bus and Auto will behave, we will see some (10-15%) reduction in traffic.
Lovely video. We need more people to have these thoughts to force the government to think in these directions. Let’s get this video to more people. And nice seeing you guys up the editing and graphics :)
The moment you said “underground”, I checked out. You have to live in bengaluru to understand that no infrastructure works. Underground would just flood during rains, causing bigger issues. Especially as kr Puram is a low lying water collecting region. The solution is simpler, the region needs to be revamped with proper traffic control and walkways for pedestrians.
Being a vehicle owner with such infrastructure is nothing short of a nightmare in Bengaluru. We maybe a nuclear power, but there exists a fundamental problem which is far more challenging to solve.
You have made a great video on my daily thoughts when commuting in the city. Please make more videos like these. Keep left to turn left and keep right to turn right will solve many deadlock in the city.
A similar case of the KR Puram flyover is the Banaswadi flyover. One flyover connects that part of Bengaluru to this. Maybe look into it you can make a whole series named 'THIS SUCKS' and create awareness as to where the average Bengalurians tax money is spent on
Hopefully we have more urban planners like you in the government. The Karnataka government is filled with incompetent people (cross-party) who doesn't have a vision and can think for the future which has created all the problems that exist in Bangalore today.
This is a high quality video with excellent graphical representation of the problem, can you do more of such videos , how about the bommanahalli junction next?
I'll have dreams about this tonight. Especially about the walkable part. Suburban rail + metro + walkable neighborhood. Chef's kiss!! Maybe only have through traffic for buses and emergency vehicles.
True hell.. another one is the indian oil flyover near mukunda theatre and smvt.. everyday in thr morning at around 9:30am the cops block the road and allow only one sided traffic for 15 minutes each to ease traffic.. one of the worst bottlenecks in thr city..
Bengaluru road junction planning is almost stupid.. I guess major reason is greed and stupid town planners.. One more is near jeevika hospital. Two U turns literally in opposite direction and so close.. Drivers are literally confused.. Another I could rhink of is Kadubeesanahalli Bridge and Sarjapur Underpass (Here which traffic light represent which road.. extremely confusing) 😤
I am sorry but the solution that you have proposed is lacking in details. The Tin Factory-K R Puram Railway Station traffic nightmare is not a single conflict point. It is a junction but split. As you have mentioned, the OMR meets the ORR at Tin Factory. The OMR then leaves Tin Factory on the cable-stayed bridge while the ORR continues up to K R Puram Railway Station where it meets Whitefield Road. The main bottleneck for vehicular traffic is not at the Railway Station. Traffic at the Railway Station is mainly caused by pedestrian movement which can be solved relatively easily with an overhead walkway. Some of the work has already been completed in this regard and the only thing that is holding it up is the completion of the Blue Line section of the K R Puram Metro Station with which the walkway is integrated. Granted the walkway design is not ideal. Going by the current state of construction, the planned walkway does not seem to have exits to the platforms at K R Puram Railway Station. This is unlike the walkway connecting Bayapannahali Metro Station and Bayapannahali Railway Station that has exits not just on each platform but also on the other side of Railway Parallel Road! The flaw in the design is very likely due to the current railway track layout wherein it is not possible to extend the island platforms of 2 and 3 to the other side of the cable-stayed bridge so that the walkway could have an exit at these platforms. However, an exit on Platform 1/ITI Gate Service Road could have been possible if the walkway had been constructed further down the road. The main bottleneck is at Tin Factory. Vehicles arriving on the ORR from Kasturi Nagar and wanting to get on the OMR on the bridge towards ITI Gate have to cut across vehicles arriving on the OMR from Benniganahalli and wanting to get on the ORR towards Railway Station. Similarly, thanks to the alignment of the bridge, vehicles arriving on the ORR from Railway Station and wishing to continue on the ORR towards Kasturi Nagar have to cut across vehicles coming down the OMR on the bridge and wishing to continue on the OMR towards Benniganahalli. How does nuking the bridge and replacing it with an underpass solve this issue? Details please. There are pedestrian challenges at Tin Factory too, by the way. Pedestrians crossing the ORR to board buses stopped on the bridge is Tin Factory's pedestrian problem. You could get the buses to stop along the new "OMR bypass" lane that has been constructed along the lake but they still have to cut across traffic to get on the bridge. You could ask mofussil buses to pick up passengers only at on the other end of the bridge at ITI Gate (there is a nice bus stop there with a separate lane) but that will greatly inconvenience those headed out of the city. A person arriving on a 500D at Tin Factory will have to take a 317A to ITI Gate to catch his or her bus to Kolar or Chittor or Tirupati.
You should do a video on Banashankari junction too. Not as bad as KR Puram, but similar vibes. With every new piece of infrastructure (bus stand, metro station), things get worse for pedestrians. They also destroyed a once iconic vegetable market (which is now just part of the footpaths, making it even worse for pedestrians)
Is it just the bridge or also the ITI land that prevent the neater design of the ORR going through Ramamurthy Nagar? This video is really excellent. I feel maybe we could also see some good designs from urban planners to solve this problem? Could there not be a solution without going underground? I think the worst offenders for dangerous design in this area are: 1. The extremely poor positioning of the Tin factory bus stand. Because of which Buses criss cross on the approach as well as on the exit towards either Indira Nagar vs the flyover. 2. The extremely poorly designed railway underpass near Gopalan Mall 3. People required to take U-turn coming from West to underpass, to go south 4. The bad design of ITI underpass on the Eastern end If only we had even a little bit of "design" as you say, things would be so much better.
The elephant in the room is...with what intention it was built? Secondly, what you look at all other fly-overs going over train tracks, do you really need such a humongous structure? K R Puram bridge was built around the IT boom. Some guy from the ruling govt mostly visited the other silicon valley and noticed the Golden Gate bridge, bought that here. We have seen this again with bus lane, cycle lane, etc. When you look at the bridge itself, its obviously built to profit an individual or a small group/party (kinda ego massaging thing) and at the same time show the rest of the world we got a nice bridge. Its similar to petro-dollar fueled wiener measuring contest among middle east but with tax payers money + take a pi55 at the opposition. The design was intentional and we paid the price. Removal will only prove, what ever we built was flawed and will not serve its actual lifetime. I can already sense this with metro trains. The time it will spend providing service to the people will be less than time taken to construct it.
1. Close the railway station at kr puram railway station - shift it to channasandra, There is a barren waste land under the SAIL, The central authority. - Also, If u want to stop trains in same Chennai line, built a station at Whitefield next to cargo terminal. 2. Divert a traffic from ITPL - Hoskote line from ITI side. Constructing a road there will also help mahadevpura residents. 3. Remove signals in A naraynpura main road by making it one way.
Theres too many problems with this bridge and all of them coincidentally take place here which leads to such a huge mess 1) it is right next to a railway station so people flood in and out all the time. There isnt proper overbridge for these people to walk to the other side so theg end up on the road 2) There is no space for a bus stop. The buses to hoskote stop literally in the moddle of the bridge at the start of the ramp. Mang private buses use this route going towards Andhra Pradesh and they all do the same. This is a nightmare in the night times 3) One of the few ways you can go to most IT parks is to go towards the left road side of the bridge not on it. If you see most of your drone shots there are more vehicles to the side of the bridge not on it! These takes them to whitefield areas 4) ORR , the busiest road in Bangalore is on the other side under the bridge so you have to cross below and take a right turn so this small gap road to the left of the bridge is actually on par with the bridge itself in being the most congested road in the city This is what happens when you have no urban planning and Bangalore should be the example for allother cities to take planning seriously. Simply opening grand bridges , double decker flyovers, tunnel roads isnt going to reduce traffic at all. Proper road maintenance, public transport and proper city planning will. The city will never unfortunately have that as they wont win you voted
Vehicles coming from ITI Gate over the bridge and from Mahadevapura converge at Tinfactory bus stop. Then they diverge towards hebbal flyover and into city. This crossover for vehicles from Mahadevapura side to Hebbal and vehicles from ITI gate side towards City is the point of maximum conflict. Traffic police are always around in peak hours and this is major obstacle as there are always vehicles coming in from Andhra.
and vice versa too, this time, conflict for vehicles coming in from Hebbal side towards ITI gate and those from City towards Mahadevapura side. Again, traffic congestion happens near the BMTC stop where the vehicles are crossing each other. This bus stop is better now for people taking buses after the Benniganahalli MS has come into operation. But for vehicles,it's still a conflicting point. ❌️
They could build a another flyover connecting the outer ring road and a ramp from KR Puram road to the Outer ring road towards silk board and whitefield. Building those 2 can improve the traffic flow.
I feel like theres basically no practical way to do infrastructure optimized for high volume traffic while also making a good pedestrian experience. In the US for example, things are mostly oriented around traffic, and aside from a few walkable pockets, most places are full of places where crossing a road is a big hassle because it means walking maybe half a mile just to reach an intersection with a cross walk. Most people just dont care because they dont walk much except in a few areas. In India there are way more pedestrians, and for now people just walk across anywhere, but this slows down traffic, and when speeds increase and road width increases like in this case, that becomes very dangerous. In walkable areas in Europe, I find that those areas are often filled with low traffic one way streets (which probably were originally just very narrow 2 way streets) which could be replicated by taking narrow 2 way roads in Indian cities and replacing them with one way streets with better pedestrian infrastructure. But this will certainly take away road capacity and I doubt it would be a popular choice.
Bangalores government is the worst and most corrupted. Rapid Infrastructure is messing this city more and causing frustration among the residents day by day. Traffic potholes waterlogging cab and auto problems soaring rents and real estate and now increased crimes. The day is not far when the graph of this city will start declining and bangalore will be the new Delhi of India.
also i feel that there should have been a double decker station at tin factory, and for KR Pura as well (blue line below and purple line above). would have saved a lot of space and unnecessary piling.
3:59 ❤ Hate this bridge like anything. And the chaos that happen on it and either side of it. Have never visited the lake even once, even though we stay hardly half a km away. This junction sucks ! And it sucks the life out of daily commuters and make them mad !
Hey man, I can help with the editing thing in your video and could make it more engaging and fast-paced. let me know if you want to know some mistakes or just need a editor.
More car infrastructure is not the answer! Improving throughput will only make the traffic worse, per induced demand. A road diet would be more appropriate, especially considering ongoing investments in sustainable transport in the area.
When it was opened it was a boon…. It took many many years to complete…. The conflict points that’s being pointed here were never present at the time of its designing or completion….
Ayy no actually they’re doing one the hardest jobs in the city. After seeing them in action we got mad respect - all the salt is for the engineers that built this item
Not to be that guy. But the solution is very unlikely to happen. Maybe removing the bridge may happen, but thats only if something like the new massive jayadeva intersection is proposed. Big ticket projects are more valuable after all
agree with your analysis but the solution was underwhelming to say the least, no wonder you didn’t bother to elaborate. As i grow older, i’m starting despise the “lets just criticise, not solve approach”
yeah. the last part reminded me of "just not bikes" and similar anti-car channels. feels a bit rushed. but he is probably doing this as a hobby so its ok
Yeah.....we could do all the beautiful things you mentioned. Orrrr.....state govt could just start a language war through some pointed comments whenever asked about the current misery of Bangalore.
That bridge has become “iconic” in a sense and just proposing a removal would be quite the task. Realistically speaking, an underground passage would just flood at the first instance of rain. Easy said than done, build underpass for pedestrian walking at multiple points.
Traffic police to carry a lathi for 2 years to "teach" specific groups who don't obey the law.
As someone who lived in Europe and experienced how these things affect quality of life first hand, i am happy to see your channel, coz i think about these things everyday.
no Indian co will work on this. ALl they are good for is harassing poor for slave labour so rich can get shit delivered in 10 minutes
I was there for just 3 months and now I think about these things almost daily too.
India won't be developed like other foreign countries in 300 years
Other countries would million steps ahead in 300 years
Video also got stuck at 4:33
Respect for highlighting this issue. Crystal clear on very poor quality of infrastructure and its impact of citizens.
If BBMP put ATLEAST half the efforts that you put in your videos, Benguluru would turn into a gold-standard for city planning.
Amazing cinematography, engaging and thought provoking storytelling!. Awesme work!
Another design 'feature' of the KR puram bridge is
Keep left to turn right.
And keep right to go straight.
Keep up the great quality👍

Maybe it's specific to bangalore, roundabouts work just fine in central delhi.
The whole eastern section of ORR is a total mess, right from KR Puram junction, Marathahalli bridge, Sarjapur Junction, Agara junction, till Silk board.

Finally someone put this up , its a hell of a place and always feels like you are in danger both as pedestrian or as a driver
I had to give-up cycling because of KR Puram and how dangerous it is to traverse through that region. Have seen terrible accidents because of cars speeding through an almost invisible speedbreaker. Lovely video. We need more people to have these thoughts to force the government to think in these directions. Let’s get this video to more people. And nice seeing you guys up the editing and graphics :)
Build, break it down, re build. Make sure to do it badly every time you build
- Rule 1 of wasting tax payers money

How did you do the 3d artwork of the landscape at 00:18? Looks awesome!!

Fiinally, a video onn the everlasting problem of KR Puram bridge. I often thinnk along the similar lines.

Inadequate space identified for buses , auto drivers and private pick up vehicles is the biggest pain point
Can we just get an award for being sooooo inefficient, I think we have achieved something special
it's sensory overload at kr pura allllll the fkn time
Is it just the bridge or also the ITI land that prevent the neater design of the ORR going through Ramamurthy Nagar?
This video is really excellent. I feel maybe we could also see some good designs from urban planners to solve this problem? Could there not be a solution without going underground?
I think the worst offenders for dangerous design in this area are:

If only we had even a little bit of "design" as you say, things would be so much better.
I love your work man.
This video created more doubts than solving. I could not understand how KR Puram junction is working at all.
Ten years ago, from the day I saw this junction, I have been cursing it 😂

I had to take a U turn once.. that was one of the bad decisions I have taken during driving 😅
Thanks for your videos
Nice one
4:06 was a good joke... I laughed a lot :)
Good Solution, but also a good joke.
Bro remembered his yt exists
They could build a another flyover connecting the outer ring road and a ramp from KR Puram road to the Outer ring road towards silk board and whitefield. Building those 2 can improve the traffic flow.
Sir,
En sir neevu? Signal althwa flyover Elli kattbeku heli?
If people wanted to walk, why would we want to have development?
/S
they are back!!! ❤
Somebody made a whole Info graphical documentary of this is what amazes me. Bangalore peeps rule
Great video! And was that a Cities Skylines clip for the 5 way intersection
lmfao i wanna remake Bangalore in CS, it'd be nice to build a Bangalore CS community
corruption and incompetence ftw!
You should make more videos like this on every conflict points.
This is another example of induced demand, wider road means more incentive to buy and drive a car
please mention gorguntepalya and hebbal
the fact that bangalore has terrible road markings at intersections of lanes is hilarious
also i feel that there should have been a double decker station at tin factory, and for KR Pura as well (blue line below and purple line above). would have saved a lot of space and unnecessary piling.
How about moving the traffic (2 lakh people) to 200-300 km away from this junction??
3:59 ❤
Hate this bridge like anything.
The worst designed flyover, there should be cloverleaf design and this bridge needs to be demolished
Sir it is amazing how for the last 10 videos you have been always the first commenter - really appreciate it!
and yes lol this bridge sucks
@@bengawalk i want to save my beautiful namma Bengaluru
How does a cloverleaf fit in here? It is not a single junction.
Special thanks to Bengaluru Traffic Police in the credits is just salt on the wound
Ayy no actually they’re doing one the hardest jobs in the city. After seeing them in action we got mad respect - all the salt is for the engineers that built this item
this should be a case study in urban planning institute
Is he safe 1:36. 😮
Not to be that guy. But the solution is very unlikely to happen.
Maybe removing the bridge may happen, but thats only if something like the new massive jayadeva intersection is proposed.
Big ticket projects are more valuable after all
What's the plan in real to be implemented on ground?
The design of this video does not suck, like the bridge!
Need someone to do this kind of analysis for Mumbai too.
ALL of Bangalore is "designed" like this. In other words, there's no design.
Please don't do that almost accident and blackout, it was extremely scary to watch.
Just like Elphinstone in Mumbai
City infra must be focused for people not for cars 😢
All powerful temples are in that area ( lhs hindu temple and mosque --- rhs church area and mosque)
Impossible to touch any thing
i love kr Puram ❤
no way cities skylines made it to a bengaluru urban planning vid
VFX 🔥
great work! you should be working with our government!
Worst planned at kr puram.. Near railway station turn road is too narrow, yet railway won't give up land
agree with your analysis but the solution was underwhelming to say the least, no wonder you didn’t bother to elaborate.
As i grow older, i’m starting despise the “lets just criticise, not solve approach”
Hope this is just a teaser to a much longer video.
yeah. the last part reminded me of "just not bikes" and similar anti-car channels. feels a bit rushed. but he is probably doing this as a hobby so its ok
A TH-camr can find the issues in the system but bbmp or road transport can’t come with solution.
Oh you should have showed the older kr puram bridge and compared that to this
Oh wow if you have any photos of the old bridge please send to hello@bengawalk.com
Yeah.....we could do all the beautiful things you mentioned.
Orrrr.....state govt could just start a language war through some pointed comments whenever asked about the current misery of Bangalore.
byebye kr puram bridge
💣💣
Screw Congress and BJP, make this guy our cm
