    Just how much wind can the DJI Mavic Air sustain? I set out to find out. On a day closing in on 50KPH (30MPH) winds - I push it to the limit. Both in regular mode as well as sport mode, in 4K/30FPS as well as 1080P/120FPS. Plus testing of how well it responds, takes off, lands, and more! I also compare it to the DJI Mavic Pro too!

    Nice to see someone who knows how to do a wind review. Some people believe a wind review only consists of hovering, which only tells part of the story.

    Perhaps invest in a blimp and off camera mic, or a fuzzy cover for your lav? There are lots of cheap solutions for dealing with wind. Some other options include reducing in post, and turning your back to the wind while shooting if you are wearing a lav.

  • @rotospace
    @rotospace 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is super-helpful...I'm a MPP owner, but I'm considering adding the air. I've heard mixed reviews of how it handles in winds like this, but what drone wouldn't struggle in wind like this? This certainly gives me a little more confidence.

    Hi this clip convinced me that MA was ok for me👌, living near a big lake and it is often windy.
    Now a lost my MA in this lake and DJI says that it was blowing to hard ~10 knots, DJI quote: "aircraft tilted 6.7 degrees frontward and 10.8 degrees rightward to resist the wind, which indicates that there was strong"
    I presume that your MA in this test tilted a LOT more in your test!?
    So I presume that 6.7 & 10.8 degrees tilt shouldn't be a problem...?
    What do you ideas/thoughts about this🤔?
    Thanks in advance 😀

    wow almost 50 mph on that high speed run, and judging from the direction of the waves he was still cutting some wind

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was actually faster than that - but I have a feeling the app has some smoothing in there, which records a slightly slower speed. I've never seen a drone fly by as fast as that. My guess was probably closer to 70MPH, which would make more sense for a 42MPH base + 30MPH tailwind.

    • @askmeaboutmymixtape

  • @tullgutten
    @tullgutten 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just wonder Why would you take of and land straight on the sand???.
    I wont take of with my mavic air unless it is dust free, usually take of and land in my hand

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally land on my hand all the time, though usually take-off from the ground when possible. The reason I take-off from the ground is that I find that every once in a while you'll get imprecise take-offs that can fly towards your face, which is less than ideal. Whereas with landing things are usually pretty stable. In this case though (high winds) - the units will often surge a few feet one direction or another when they first lift off, which could very well be towards your face.

    • @rickdondex8536
      @rickdondex8536 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      great wind test video... But, yeah, I was thinking the same. You're not afraid of getting sand or salt air in the internal components? When the wind is onshore here at the beach. I stay grounded. Too much salt in the air. Plus, I use a landing pad when landing on dirt roads or the beach. Actually, I almost always use a landing pad.

    Showing us this video really helps, especially to us newbies. Do you look constantly on your screen or do you also check the drone in the air from time to time? Any tips to counter heavy gusts and wind?

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm always checking both. I'm looking at the aircraft with my own eyes to see what drift looks like (if any). That's harder to realize at first from the screen, but is super easy with ones own eyes. But I'm also checking the screen to ensure that the GPS signal is strong and that I'm in the modes I want to be.

  • @nitramluap
    @nitramluap 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, to be fair it's really only flying at it's maximum airspeed all the time - like any aircraft, it's the speed relative to the air around it that matters.
    It's just the added wind component that makes it *appear* to be going faster relative to the ground (ie. ground speed). It will go even faster in a hurricane, but you might not get it back. ;)
    One thing to note is that if the wind speed is close to the device's top speed, don't fly downwind as you might not have enough juice to crawl back! But I know you know all this... ;)

    Need some advice. I prefer taking off and landing by hand as my older (cheaper) drone had a tendency of allowing dirt to enter the prop gears. Had a problem where one prop malfunctioned due to having particles grind down some teeth in the gear. Is this a problem for DJI drones?

    As other tests show, the air handles head wind better than the Pro. If I undestand it right, the Pro had to be put in sport mode just to hold its position. The fact gets kind of lost in the review.

    • @Totustuus2022
      @Totustuus2022 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand and I applaud you for that but in my inquiry I said "in this conditions". I am assuming that you will not be able to go far so you still will have LOS. I was just interested in how the drone behave in a straight line with that type of wind speed. Like a wind tunnel. Cheers

  • @rafaelmejia5988

    Really nice. My main concern is not the wind, thou. It is the dependency on wifi, the noise and the lack of the waypoints and followme features.

    • @Dcrainmaker
      @Dcrainmaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't seen the WiFi be a core issue for most of the flying I do. If however you're looking to push the boundaries on distance, then perhaps it might be. But if you're generally within 200-400m of it...no biggie.

    • @rafmejia
      @rafmejia 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I've seen some videos of people having issues in wifi crowded areas. For some others it's been just fine, I agree. Knowing the history of DJI rushing products out the door to follow with tons of firmware updates, I'd rather wait and see. At first, they announced the Waypoints, and then they just removed it. Now I've heard they plan to include them in the SDK to 3rd parties.

    Could the winds not flip the drone? I have a Mavic pro and I've flowing in 30-40kph winds with gusts op 40-50kph. I've always been worried that it will flip the drone. If the drone drifts then a plan can be made... but if it flips, it's all over. The Mavic pro will obviously be affected (shake) more due to its larger size. The question is... will it flip?

    • @Dcrainmaker

      That's due to sport mode, which increases the angle of the aircraft such that it's no longer guaranteed for the props to be out of the frame at all times.
