      I’m thinking the Mavic II will include all of these advancements and a few more to boot, I too am happy with the Mavic, it’s still an awesome machine. It’d be nice to have the asteroid and boomerang video options though.

    Tom I love your reviews. Well done, but please mention the reality that the DJI Go app is voted one of the worst apps in either play store. If you can't rely on the app that controls your drone, then you become liable and dangerous. DJI has also earned the reputation as having the worst customer service in the industry. Please talk about the thousands of complaints on their own forum before they get deleted. We need reviewers to step up to the plate and be real when it comes to customer service as it relates to this horrible company. DJI has great drones but their app is a joke. Be sure to mention all the facts.

      John Dough - the Mavic Air UAS doesn't use the DJI GO app. It uses the DJI GO 4 app, just like the Mavic Pro, et al. The app is truly feature-rich and its complexity irritates a lot of new users - especially folks who hate to read, or do homework. Users complain about frequent updates and bugs. Apparently, some just don't understand their operating environment (NAS). Manned aircraft aviation apps are also subject to frequent updates and require more upkeep than run of the mill apps - just ask any pilot who uses Jepp or Foreflight apps. Being a responsible pilot requires a little effort. I can't speak to DJI's customer service - I rarely use anyone's customer service anymore. But I use their app every time I fly my Mavic Pro. Like anything complicated, it takes work to master. Patience and practice are required, yet many of the folks who review complex apps have neither. How many times have you read reviews by people who just downloaded the app that day? User reviews have one fatal flaw - they're written by users. Of all skill levels and temperaments. I don't know what you mean when you say "...can't rely on the app that controls your drone..." Can't rely on it in what way? As a Part 107 Remote Pilot, flying a Mavic Pro within FAA legal constraints on commercial assignments, I have NEVER had an app related issue during flight ops. I have had some stupid pilot moments though. The app cannot possibly be perfect - but it functions more reliably than the pilot on most occasions. So, while it appears to be a FACT that the app rating is low, it is by no means a fact that the software is bad. Or that it's worse than others. Or that it represents an independent risk. Or anything else of scientific or factual value, for that matter. So, if I were Tom, I would continue to mention the pertinent facts without regard to opinions, such as user ratings.

    • @johndough6930
      @johndough6930 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Central-Virginia Photography-Services, LLC Sorry yes it uses the only app DJI Go 4 app. One of the worst apps on any app store because it crashes while you're in midair. You crash your drone then DJI blames you. It's an amazing business model. It's not hard to use, just horribly coded by a company who refuses to fix it. Go read their forums and the reviews. Thousands of pissed off customers.

    • @morallytainted1
      @morallytainted1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Dough I couldn't agree more with app crashes from the Go 4 app. I now use Litchi which does have its own cons but has not once left my Mavic Pro in the air without being able to see what's in front of my drone. As for the Go 4 app I absolutely hate it when I'm flying just barely in my field of view and my video feed freezes or just gives me a green screen and I have to hit the return to home just to land and restart everything to get back in the air.

    None of the early reviewers have properly compared the Intelligent Flight modes with the Mavic Pro. The Mavic Air does not have Course Lock, POI, Home Lock, or Fixed Wing mode. Course Lock and POI are absolute essentials for many of the Cinematic shots I like to use. I also haven't seen any evidence that the Active Track feature on Mavic Air includes the Profile and Spotlight modes of the Mavic Pro (we've only seen Trace mode). Profile is the most important tracking mode for most movie scenes using Active Track.
    I guess keeping quite on certain details was a condition of being an early reviewer. To ensure we remain in the dark until after the initial launch sales, DJI still haven't released the manual download for Mavic Air.

    • @jorgenbjorn
      @jorgenbjorn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think all the footage looks jittery as it's recorded in 25P and ND-filters have not been released yet, so you can't get the right shutter-speed.
      I see the jitter pretty much on every drone if the dude flying it haven't bought ND-filters to get the right amount of motion blur :)

As it has just 21 mins of flight mode, I want to know if it can be charged when I travel where I will have just a power bank with no power supply for a week during my Himalayan trekking. I will definitely carry more batteries.

    So I saw on some videos that the mavic air is more agile and faster because it is capable of leaning more aggressively which makes it faster/more agile. Do you think this makes it better in the wind even though it's lighter than the mavic? I'm interested to see the relationship between the aggressiveness of tilt vs weight of the drone in windy conditions

    what would you do? i have the mavic pro but i'm considering to sell it because drones under 500grams (like the mavic air) do not have any flight restrictions in switzerland (which are pretty hard). it's perfectly clear that i wouldn't fly next to an airport, but in switzerland the no-fly zones are in a 10km radius around airports which leave out almost no space to fly
    Thanks for your help

    With all the safety on mavic air. Yet people still doing stupid things, crashing and losing them.
    Here a few advices, if u dont know how to fly, dont get an expensive quad, start off small. Unless you have a coach who KNOWs how to pilot.
    Maintenance before you fly. (Check your quad out b4 flying)
    Check your surrounding like NFZ no fly zone.
    Anyways just keep out of trouble, your making us pilots look bad. FPV racers i have no complaints. Haha. Im one of the racers.

    I called them today and I told them that my controller does not connect to the Mavic Air (after I tried almost everything). It took them incredible 1.5 hours on the phone to finally come up with the answer - Yea our app sucks and it doesn't work with your latest IOS. I was like ... You gotta be kidding me right??? I spend a thousand dollars and I can't fly???? Well, he said - downgrade your phone or no, you can't fly. I am leaving for a week long trip and my new drone does not fly because DJI is not able to fix their app??? This is ridiculous!!! I am rarely pissed but this time I would love to type this text with my fists instead with my fingers.

    Hello Tom and thanks for all good work trying educated and help other flyers. I have question. Say, you’re standing on steep cliff high 70m above the sea, your Mavic Air is in distance over the sea, RTH is set at 50metres and for some reason craft is auto returning to home point at those 50metres. How it will react when approaching wall of the cliff which is higher than 50m? Will craft stop front of it and hover there ? I assuming that RTH height must be set ahead in this scenario to the highest point just to avoid this situation? What about flying in hilly areas, will RTH set height always adjusting to terrain?
    Thank for helping me in those situations since my experience is at very “ beginner “ area.

    hello.
    i have 2 questions about the diffrents options filming (dronies, circle around, etc...):
    1) how the mavic do to get target in center? use the gps in TX? or just target "silhouette" , like tracking?
    2) when doing dronies circle and other option filming, if there is obstacle, did the drone only stop, or get aroud obstacle and continue the dronie and other asking filming?
    thank you.

      For flight, it is probably not as much of an issue of simply size as it is aerodynamics - the air is smaller so less surface area for wind to blow on and its also quite aerodynamic.
      For stability on one spot, power to mass ratio - if there is enough power in those engines combined with the proper propellor design to keep the tiny mass of the drone stable; add to that the vision sensors.
      Besides the above to its got a darn 3 axis stabilized camera!
      But I would love to see stability comparison with actual footage.

    An interesting aircraft, but not an upgrade from the Mavic Pro...
    Although they claim 4K at a maximum of 100mbs bit rate, it's not true 4K (4096x2160, which the Mavic Pro has), but only UHD (3840X2160).
    Less flight time, less range and less height - 5000m *above sea level*, compared to 5000m above your take off point on the Mavic Pro. If you fly from a mountain, you may not even be able to take off with the Mavic Air if you're above 16,404 ft, lol.
    Forwards and backward collision avoidance cameras are great, but no side collision avoidance.
    Still a tiny camera sensor, no aperture control.
    No OccuSync, just Enhanced WiFi for the video downlink, which is a deal breaker for some.
    Video latency up to 250ms.
    My conclusion: A great step up from the Spark, but not a step up from the Mavic Pro, and quite a disappointment for those of us who are looking for a video platform with more modern technology than the Phantom 4.

    • @jyunte
      @jyunte 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      harry camper What a silly comment! Mavic owners have been looking forward to a Mavic Pro 2, or a Phantom 5 (one or both of which will almost certainly come). Instead, DJI gave us a Spark 2. You May be right, that the Mavic Pro is about to be made obsolete, but not by the Mavic Air. Those of us who want DJI to continue with OccuSync, rather than interference-prone wifi, and continue with longer-range capable aircraft, and larger sensors on the cameras, with their adjustable apertures will certainly buy them when they are available. Mavic Pro owners are unlikely to buy the Air.

      harry camper You're too excited, you keep missing the point. Take a breath and read what I said. Mavic Pro owners were looking for DJI to produce something better than the Air. They wanted a platform like the Mavic Pro, but with a better camera, larger sensor, adjustable aperture, OccuSync, similar range, and longer flight time. They got none of that. Eventually, DJI will produce one. There's is not much in the Air to draw Mavic Pro owners to the Air. I'm sure the Air will be a great buy for people who want what it offers. For those waiting for a true upgrade to the Mavic Pro, we'll just have to wait.
      By the way, you're still stuck with DJI Go 4 with the Air, and if you land at 30% battery, you'll still be doing this with the Air, so your flight times will be more like 12 minutes.
      By Phantom 5/Mavic Pro 2, we're really talking of the same aircraft... Ideally, Mavic-style body, with Phantom-like camera.
      Casey Neistat has a video quality comparison online already, comparing the Air, MP and Phantom footage. Spoiler: the Phantom still wins. That's important for people who want/need a better camera on an airborne platform. Some of us are willing to wait for that quality.

      The rumors were always saying there would be a drone slotted between the Spark and MP and then later a true successor to the MP. The first part was true and I have no doubt DJI will want to produce a true Mavic2 to battle the new Autel Evo. Yet, all these insecure Mavic owners are screaming that the air shouldn't be called a "Mavic", but a Spark Pro. How infantile. What made the Mavic concept so interesting was a small portable folding drone that was easy to fly and had 4K video from a stabilized 3 axis gimbal. Um, that describes the Air, not the Spark. Let's be honest, DJI consumer drones are mainly aimed at the AP crowd and in that realm the Air beats the MP. Besides a slightly better camera, it's objectively cheaper, smaller, faster, better object avoidance, better-protected gimbal, supposedly fights winds better, and the only main con is lack of endurance/long-range fpv. (which is technically illegal anyways) I like exploring far out so for me I'll keep my Mavic Pro, but for most, the Air is clearly a better value. The Air was never aimed at existing Mavic owners - but it will cannibalize new MP and especially Spark sales. We should all be happy the tech is getting smaller, better, cheaper - instead of sounding like Karma buyers screaming - but I have a removable gimbal!

    I tried downloading the files from your site because I just ordered my mavic air and I was curious to try editing them on my iPad Pro. But I kept getting an error that said iOS didn’t recognize the file. It looked like an mp4 file and I’ve had no trouble editing them before. So I don’t know what happened

    The rear facing obstacle avoidance, I find with my Mavic, flying towards the sun can stop my drone moving, flying backwards fixes this. Not so with the Mavic Air, you’d have to use sport mode or fly sideways.
    Can just the rear sensors be turned off while leaving the front sensors active?

      The Mavic Air is an excellent drone. The Air 2 has a few new features and longer battery life. The propellers now are much more silent than before. The extra stuff on the Air 2 may not be worth the extra price if you are on a budget. You will be very happy with the Mavic Air. I have one and so far I have not upgraded.

    Thanks, fantastic video. But... The background, which was panning horizontally in the Circling, Helix, and Boomerang mode, looked "jumpy" and not smooth. Is this a compression artifact with TH-cam or the result of jerked turning by the drone while filming? Thanks!

  • @EzekielKelly

    The Air was not intended to be better than the Mavic Pro and it isn't. It blends features of the Spark with features of the Mavic and sits neatly between the two in term of both price and capability. Yes, range is really important! Yes, battery life is really important! I've been flying drones professionally for a really, really long time and I can't imagine anyone with any experience thinking otherwise. I have photographed so many amazing things that I could not get close enough to until the Mavic came out. It was awesome being able to fly to remote places I had found on Google Earth. Range/battery life is huge! The camera is also still better with the Mavic Pro (not much). But this is exactly what DJI intended with the price point, so why are people so concerned about which is better? It goes: Spark, Air, Mavic Pro respectively in terms of both price and capability. When someone introduces a long-range portable drone with a large sensor, THAT will be the real deal!

    Very helpful Tim, I have a couple of questions, I'm looking at getting the new Mavic Air that was just released. My main use for the drone will be for our atv outings. If i'm by myself and want to film from about, would the follow me mode be preferred or the active tracking mode ? It seems like the active track mode would work best as in your video here.
    Does my phone or ipad have to have cellular service ? Also I see you are using a Samsung phone, I have an older Samsung Galaxy 4. I've heard that Apple products work better with the DJI stuff and that there has been glitches when using the Samsung, do you have any feedback ?

    Tom thanks for your videos.
    Question: I have no drone. I was about to buy Mavic Pro Pltnm 2 weeks ago when I read about DJI's new release. Now I've watched the videos I don't care about flying aspects, or intelligent modes, in fact I love them and I also love portability but, I've read M. Air has a fixed focus camera, neither Autofocus, nor manual focus (while M. Pro has). Is it like that? I haven't notice blurred images in your videos (even the one inside the car is sharp!!!!).
    What about not abling you recording D-Log files?
    Even so, is M. Air preferible to M. Pro? Any advantage (besides battery and range which I won't use so far) buying the "bigger" one?
    Thank you in advance.

    i see DJI had the Air priced at 799 dollars on the release notes so i converted it to euro's (643,99) and im like cool ill order it tomorrow. Then every link im looking at now is saying 800 euro's. FUCKERS! yeah ok price the Air to shift the remaining Mavic Pro units then the Air price should fall. Annoying though as i want an Air and will have to wait now.

    Hi and congratulations for the great review for this drone!!!! I am about to buy one of this and since it will be my first drone and I have zero experience with this kind of thing, I would like you to tell me your recommendation for the best micros card to use with it. The largest capacity and the fastest recording rate because I will be using 4k videos only and no photos. Thanks for your time and you got a new subscriber from Brazil!!!!!

Another thing is, as far as I can see the iphone plug is now attached to two extendable arms of the RC. So how will the ipad holder will fit into these arms. Many thanks in advance for the responses...

    I cannot put in my thoughts on what is better because the Air will be my first drone ever but for me the Mavic Air has everything I am looking for in a drone at a price I am somewhat comfortable with. Will this be the end all for drones...def not because everything has pros and cons. If I owned a Pro right now I would probably just wait for a Mavic Pro 2 or the Autel Robotics Evo, but the Air has everything I need. We are human beings and will never be happy with anything...If someone gives us 1 million dollars we will complain on why it's not 2 million. I am excited to get my Mavic Air and can't wait to see the Autel Evo and the Mavic Pro 2.

    Hi Tom, I love your videos and have been watching your channel for a while now. I just wanted to mention that I recently bought a Mavic Air and I must say I was disappointed and will be returning it. I already own a Mavic Pro and the 3 things that’s struck me right away when I started to fly it are: [1] It is obnoxiously louder than the Mavic Pro. [2] I miss the wheel on the right side of the Mavic Pro controller that allows you to adjust exposure on the fly. If your video is starting to get overexposed you have to dig through the menu system to adjust it. I don’t think this is good design . [3] So far I haven’t been able to get video that looks as good as the video from my Mavic Pro.. Just my humble opinion! :-)
