If youtube and your site was around in the 70's and 80's when I was building as a kid I would have been so much more knowledgeable in painting and finishing a model. Thankfully you are here now and provide so much valuable information for the hobby. I've bought many products based on your reviews and improved by painting. Just ordered a 4 pack of the vallejo metal paints. Nice to have an acrylic alternative that is safer to use. Thanks for this review.
Ordered the steel after watching this video and holy smokes, I can't believe how good it is. Goes on so fast, so smooth, and it looks great! Hard to believe it's an acrylic paint honestly
Sir, you do such a good job with your videos. Love how you are totally upfront and honest with your demos. You show us everything.. nothing hided. I love these colors! Thanks for the info!
This video was a great help! I had been trying to use the old regular vallejo metallics and had trouble. These look a lot better and no problems. This answered all my questions about the Vallejo metallic world. Thank you for a super video.
The gold is meant to be mixed with the brass/copper one to make the shade you want, that gold is super green on its own, i love those paints, probely my favorit water based metalic
I haven't built in the last 30 years but your videos inspired me to pick it back up after all this time. Currently just started to paint an x wing using all your tips and advice and I'm really happy with it so far so a massive thank you for sharing your knowledge. Just need to get rid of my nervous shaky hands over time now🤣
As someone living in a townhouse where stinky lacquers are a big no-go, these Metal Colors are a lifesaver. Also worth mentioning they're fantastic brushed on. I've even brushed Exhaust manifold over miniatures with light undercoats to get a metallic contrast-paint like effect with it shading the recessed areas in a single coat.
I use these paints a lot with my models. I like to use them for weathering for jet exhaust, heat, etc. with just a brush. And even with a brush, it still comes out great. Vallejo still impresses me to this day. Excellent paint.
I have some of this paints and they are okay. About two months ago, i did a model with Contrast Paints + this stuff and it gave me great results but as far a metalizer paints, nothing will beat solvent based paints if you need really shiny stuff or better looking metals.
@@tombrand236 Take a look at Vince's video on making a good acrylic gold. Seems like adding a bit of copper is what you're looking for. th-cam.com/video/26_1W7zR-cA/w-d-xo.html
@@christopherchan6505 thanks yes I have already seen that and I have tried that, as well as adding just a bit more saturated yellow in too. Overall though this range by airbrush or regular brush is amazing though, I love them! Would like to see more coloured metallic ones introduced.
You hit the nail on the head with the gold having that green tint. Most miniature painters consider gold to be the weakest of the line because they're looking for a richer gold, but if a green-gold is what you're after, this is a solid one.
I stick to Vince Venturella's gold recipe that uses this, the copper and some of green stuff world's gold pigment powder and it's an absolute miracle for miniature painting.
I'm amazed by your paint shaker. I have no tools or paint. Your videos are helping my search greatly. I'm hoping to take more action in adding life to my own projects. Happy painting.
I use these a lot, mainly just hand painting detail work, in fact just used it out of curiosity in the airbrush the other day. I used the Chrome on a set of wheels and while it doesn't have the mirror effect that say a Molotow marker does or any of the high end paints, it does give a decent sheen.
I know you have another video about vallejo paints where you stated that you need to use a bigger needle. Is that the case with these paints, too? I see that you sprayed these at 18psi, but I didn't catch what size needle. I really like the burnt iron. What needle size did you use for this?
I have the Scale 75 Metal and Alchemy set. They're acrylics but they have wonderful tints for making crazy looking refractive reflections and True Metallic Metal effects. I really like them.
Burnt Iron and Exhaust Manifold are excellent colors in this line up. Vallejo does have a specific Metal Varnish to use with this line up, which does help it pop a bit more.
In the test two years ago, the evaluation of the colors was not so positive. How did the opinion change? How do the colors compare with the Mission Models metallic colors?
I love the videos of comparing. I'm very new but the only thing is I don't use an airbrush and just love using brushes. So I always wonder if I can get these results with a brush too.
There is a small corner of my local hobby shop where the metal Vallejo shelf of these is sitting on the floor, and they are all just collecting dust - seems like they've been there for awhile. guess it's time to check them out!
One thing I love about this paint is just how opaque it goes on. You need to know going it you won’t be able to do any shading with it whatsoever, but if you’re doing hand painting of details it allows really easy touchups, and it’s easy to fix errors. My favorite line of metal paints. I use Steel on my Gundam frames, and you really need to grab some of the chrome from AA Hobbies when Rich gets more in….I may have tapped them out…
2:00 I decanted them because I didn't like how messy they got. The clear bottles I decanted them into makes it much easier to tell when they are mixed thoroughly. I have a 4e Vortex mixer as well and beside using that, I handshake them too. Only the vortex mixer didn't do the trick. They separate like almost no other paint. I love them though; best acrylic metallics out there.
As you mentioned, the caps are really annoying. I've started taking them off, cleaning them of all paint, stuffing the inside of the nozzle with tac, adding a little vaseline to the outside of the nozzle, and then filling the bit that goes over the nozzle with hot glue. Close it up before it hardens, wait a minute and open. Pull out the tac, wipe off the vaseline, and you have a massively improved seal. It's still not perfect because it's hard to judge the exact amount of glue to use and it sets a little too hard to really smush the nozzle perfectly, but it's still a huge improvement. You can also paint these on with a brush. They're actually wonderful for that, as you get very smooth and very high coverage from a single coat.
Saw the dope line the other day and considered buying. Looks like I'll be making a trip back to the store now. Thanks for all the great vids. 👍🏻 Looking forward to seeing your vids in the new year.

This stuff looks a heck of a lot better on a gloss black. For some reason it worked great for me over Tamiya acrylic gloss black while a little tacky. Light mist coats at about 12" away. Got almost a mirror finish from the silver.
My only gripe with the Metal Color range is the lack of colour diversity. Mixing the Copper and Gold paints can get you some nice brown-tone colours, but it'd be nice if they made a new wave of paints with bronze, brass and gold tones, as well as colours in the heat-oxidised spectrum.
I have to agree, some of the magnesium or burnt iron colors are so similar and I wish they came out with different shades of copper, brass and more gold because personally I hate the vallejo metal gold its too greenish
@@lifeinjersey9846 Yeah, I agree on that. The gold is a bit too green in its bias. It's good for things that are "real-world" in design, but terrible for anything fantasy-esque where a yellow, stylised gold would be best.

You don't use any thinner in the airbrush with the paint?
No, it's pre thinned
How does these paints compare to the regular lines of Vallejo metal colors (Model Air & Model Color)?
These are a completely different formula. The regular Vallejo paints have metal flakes in them, you don't see the flakes in these and that makes them look like actual metal
Which spraybooth are you using?
Vallejo is top tier
Great Video!
The Vallejo website says that they recommend spraying over a gloss black primer. It might in return provide a brighter result??
I tried both and couldn’t see a difference, but I may have piled on too much paint…
@@CFster by all means i wasn't putting down your modeling skills and techniques. My thought process was that metal color would reflect better off a glossy surface than a flat one. Also I definitely love your channel!!! I find myself anxiously waiting for the next video!!!! Happy new year!
@@gordon8753 not my channel. I’m just some dude who commented. Thanks anyway. Happy New Year.
How come you don’t prime w a airbrush?
I hope all of you are doing well.
Hello happy New Year!
I was wondering what you consider the top airbrush for painting gunpla.
Or if anyone direct me to a video where you cover this.
I have a paasche eagle for 3 years now. Its all i have ever used.
Cheers!
Without a doubt this is the airbrush you want. Made by Mr Hobby Japan.

@@barbatosrex9473 Thank you sir!
Great review as always. So these go straight in? No thinner or flow improver?
Yes these are pre thinned
@@barbatosrex9473 Thank you sir.
Can you paint a model car with that airbrush
Dang!!..Who Wouldve Ever Thought Of Using "Posted Notes" For Masking...Awesome, Awesome Info/Idea....Thanks Once Again Robert..For All Your Awesome Videos!!, btw I Hoping "Ollie" is Doing Ok?...as Our Furry Little Buddies Mean More Than The World To The Majority Of All Of Us ..I Imagine
Do you know if these paints be used safely on the ABS frames of some Gunpla kits, as well as their primer?
Both work perfectly on those frames
@@barbatosrex9473 cool thank you, in terms of fumes you mentioned that you can’t really smell anything. Do you think they could be airbrushed in a room without access to a window that can open?
