I've experienced some minimal bubbling with my VGC paints at start, but quickly realized that the problem is easily avoidable by being careful when handling paint on the palette.
If you're worried about bubbles in your paint then don't thin your pool of paint, pull off a tail then thin that. I've never had bubbling issues with any paint this way.
Materials application specialist for the coatings industry here, the bubbling is caused by a lack of silicone oil or some other defoaming agent. This is a way of cutting costs and generally speaking, only lower quality products do this. Some other industries do this but hobby paints tend to not be as high quality as people think, they are typically watered house interior decoration paints or student/classroom grade paint with extra chalk, which by the way is a pigment(PW18) and this is used as a marketing trick to say they have higher pigment loads than normal. This is actually a completely normal thing to add since its a matte agent and opacifier, you just cant use kaolin which is what craft paint and most hobby whites use.
So interesting, thanks for sharing! I found that miniature paints have stepped up in quality in recent years (with ranges like Pro Acryl, Two Thin Coats, AK 3rd Gen, Warpaints Fanatic, and Game/Model Color), would you agree? Or are these still "low quality" from your perspective?
Vallejo paints are awesome. I use quite a few brands and am still learning but Vallejo’s model color is always a concrete foundation of my painting hobby
Another great review Stahly. I did find one problem with the reviews though. To give an overall score for the paints can be misleading. For example - Amazing acrylics 10/10. Metallics and special effects 1/10. This would then get a 7 maybe even a 6.. I feel they should all be separated as if they were different ranges within the brand. Hence, Brand A for acrylics 10/10. Brand B for metallics 10/10 and Brand C for fluoro's 9/10. And these, in your opinion, are the brands you should buy for each type of paint
I've never had an issue with the new game color bubbling, and I LOVE the range. Picking up a bunch of the new model colors. Been really enjoying the new game color, AK 3rd gen, and pro acryl lately... all just amazing ranges with stellar quality. Thanks Stahly!
I've been using the new game color range and express color for awhile now and have had no issues with bubbling. The examples you show are with more paint than you should ever be slapping on a model. Thin your paints and keep the layers thin and I don't see the bubbles being a problem for most painters.
Ive been using the New Game color range strictly for over a year and Ive never had a problem with bubbles. Just like Stahly said just take your time. I’ve use both synthetic and Natural and the paint always runs smooth. Find your thinning sweet spot and you’ll be ok. Now this New Model Color rage will complete my color palette and i will have all I’ll ever need. Now where to find it 🤔
Same experience for me, the new game colors never did any bubbles. I'm a slow painter and shake my bottles by hand, not with a vortex mixer, so that might help.
@@TheGabb3r I'm a pretty slow painter, I don't own a vortex mixer and I had bubbles appear when using the new Game Color. Never had any bubbles when using other color lines (Citadel, AK 3rd Gen, Duncan Rhodes TTC, ProAcryl, old Vallejo Model Color). Don't know if it's a bad batch or something, but I'll stick to mainly using AK 3rd Gen, I genuinely enjoy them a lot.
Love the swatch series, please go over all of Vallejo metalics through all the ranges, its so hard to tell what the difference between each of them could be without a swatch
I only experienced the bubbles when I first purchased the paints when I shook them too much or used the vortex mixer. I realized shortly after using them that they do not need much shaking and have not had any issues since. Also, your videos are great, thank you!
Depends on the colour, I think. I own about three dozen of the new Game Colour and most are fine but a few will separate into having all pigments of one colour float as a separate layer which needs intense shaking to disappear. Goblin Green is one example.
Have you tried leaving them a minute or 2 after using the vortex to see if the bubbling has reduced. The resin for the 3D printer says to shake and leave x amount of minutes to reduce bubbles.
I have all the new game color range and Xpress color range and don’t have any issues with bubbling with any of the colors. Apply them thin and use a medium in stead of water to thin my paints.
Regarding the bubbles - I do remember someone else (a few years back) being told that they were mixing/shaking Vallajo bottles wrong. Instread of an up and down action they should be rolled in one palms whilst on their side. Maybe that would negate bubble forming.
I, for one, are excited about this range. Always been a VMC user, and while I've been buying a few VGC bottles lately, I'm staying with Vallejo using both ranges. For me, it's a perfect blend of quality, colour range, price, and ease of availability.
I have a vortex mixer and I didn't even notice bubbles until they were mentioned. I assumed it was the tiny bit of flo-improver either in the paint or what I add via my paint water. Still, seems to have no affect on my painting.
Model Color has been around in the old form for almost as long as I have been around? Dang. Vallejo got it mostly right back in 98. I'm liking a lot of the changes though. I find that the old range was very thick indeed. And the one metallic I have from it is just not up to snuff for me. A thinner paint, with similarly high opacity sounds absolutely great to me. Honestly, the bubbling is not an issue to me. I haven't noticed it or had problems with it while using new Game Color, so it won't be an issue for new Model Color either. My local hobby store will hopefully start stocking this soon so I can give it whirl myself.
Brilliant review!!! This is so helpful. Especially your color swatches! I only recently bought your swatches and started using them and I have to say it is one of the best "hobby tools" I have now. I use it daily for planning colour schemes, looking at paints to buy, comparing ranges etc. It is absolutely brilliant. Have you considered doing a review of Scale75 paints? I'm not a huge fan of their regular paint range, but I find their metallic paints to be some of the best metallics I've used.
If I need a color, I may give the new model color a try. My issue with the bubbles from game color was really bad. Idk if I was shaking them too much, but I was shaking them far less than citadel paints and was barely thinning them. Bubbles aren’t an issue if they don’t dry like that. I’ve gotten bubbles out of ak paints that never dried with the bubbles.
Tried a few colors from the new revision, and don't have the issue with bubbling. Both VMC(2024) and VGC have worked great for me, so far. Maybe a few colors exhibit this problem moreso than others? My biggest gripe is needing to rely on online distributors for both. And as usual the popular colors: Deck Tan, Ice Yellow, Beige Red, Silver(VGC), Moon yellow, and Scorpy Green, tend to always be out of stock.
I had no problems with bubbling, with properly mantained brush (with hairs not spreading around), they practicly don't appear and can be easly poped anyway. Bubbling is a major problem for me when I use washes - thinner and thinned (and I thinned mine a lot) ones can bubble quite a lot, especially when you don't use pointy brush, but it's not that bad anyway, it just can take some time to remove the bubbles manualy.
I have all the Game Colors and now picking up new Model Colors as well and think they are fantastic. Not sure if this new formula has anything to do with this but they perform well in homemade washes too.
Literally everything you said matches my experience with vallejo paints. I've really struggled with their older yellow/oranges, weak and watery basically. Are the new ones any better? I switched to AK 3rd gen for this and they seem much better. Those older Metallics are so thick and globby! Hate them.
Love the videos and thank you for being thorough. Great info there. On the bubbling issue so to speak, can we repeat all those steps you did to make it bubble with all the other paints to confirm they don’t do it ? It kind of feels that behaviour is fairly easily forced by lots of agitation, then slapping on thick and not touching it. Adding an extra test for one paint brand to potentially fail that none of the rest even get put through maybe is not setting up as thorough a comparison as I know you strive for.
Hey Stahly, do you have a list of the Model colors that are being discontinued (gone forever) and NEW colors to the line? I found those lists helpful as I stocked up on a few favorite old GAME color paints and picked up all the new colors - of course i already had the entire Game Color set vs. maybe only 40-50 Model Colors. I just can't seem to find it anywhere else. Thanks!
Now I mostly paint with Vallejo game color, and I am happy with the color, but I find it difficult to get the color out sometimes, especially the black color. I don't know if the paint is more viscous than before? I see no difference in the pigment in the new colors and the old ones? but I mostly only paint little games works goblins anyway :=) I have like 60 Game colors new ones and express colors to, they are lovely =)
Stahly thanks you so much for the review ! Can not buy for the moment these new formula from Vallejo, because have all old ones, new in stock. Yes,there are some problems with VMC,to improve their paints,i have add metallics balls iron inoxydable, add some liquitex airbrush medium,Vallejo thinner and flow improver too,all these 3 in smaller quantity. And every 4-6 months all go to Four E'S mixer to avoid pigments separation. For the moment i prefer the AK 3 gen, then Pro acryl,Kimera for their unique pigment saturation,Citadel,etc..
We get 18ml instead of 17ml, because thinning agent ammount is almost doubled due to more pigment that is inside. So basically if we would water down both 18ml and 17ml we get same ammount of usable paint.
I have had many problems with new game color due to lack of coverage (especially in reds) if Model color goes to that formulation too... I will definitely stay at AK 3rd Gen.
Bubbles arise from the surface tension of the water, there should be surfactant available that will inhibit the bubbles but not impact the quality of the paint; something to experiment on, Stahly.
Nice video! You could include like a top 5 or top 10 paints. Let's say I want to try this range by buing only a few colors, that list would be very helpful. Or even better, I could buy the top 5 from all ranges and have a nice collection.
Model Color bronze was actually my favourite metallic paint outside of vallejo's metal color range. It being thick doesn't matter because I just thin it down for airbrush anyway. I should probably mention that I don't just basecoat and wash TMM, so the next part makes a bit more sense. It's a fantastic starting point for stuff like gold because the bronze paint was mixed in with some sort of a dark medium that made the shadows of the bronze metal really dark. Probably an unwanted feature of the mix for most people, but I fucking loved it. Add in some green and purple mid tones, highlight with metal colour range gold and now you're cooking with gas. Really sad to see that once the two bottles I've got left are gone, I'm totally out.
The "friction" is only part of the matter. The stiffness of synthetic brushes causes bristle separation, thereby allowing air to be introduced, not unlike a whisk used in mixing a cake batter.
Excellent video. And as someone who supports you on patreon, your color charts have been very useful to work with, you have saved me many hours of work on commissions :). Regarding the bubbles, curiously it has happened to me not only with Game color, but also with other brands, such as Citadel, AK and even Scale75. I think it must definitely be the constant use of the vortex.
I've been ride or die for Vallejo for a while now. I have great results more consistently with them, and they have less controversies than other lines. With that said, they are so stinking hard to get my hands on. I don't know what it is but nobody every stocks them in my area. I HAVE to order online for them. I've had to use army painter in the past to fill gaps and......ew.
How does the new black stack up to the old black? The old one is highly regarded by many painters as the best black color for models. Myself included, I want to know if I need to stock up on the old formula...
Great review as usual. However, the bubble issue seems a little over-hyped. You needed to shake like hell, mix like you wanted to make whipped cream and apply a very thick coat of paint to the model. You could probably get bubbling with any paint brand under these conditions.....
Been waiting for this! I have a few new ones and a more important question than even bubbles for me is how well do they color match with the original range? I have a few new formula and some don't seem that close like the new Black Grey is much more Black than the original. Can be a problem if you want to continue old projects.
Most beginner friendly is Army Painter Fanatic, least beginner friendly is Scale 75. The rest (AK Interactive, Citadel, Vallejo, etc.) are in the middle, but nothing especially difficult as majority started with at least two of them. The difference is in your painting style. Paint ranges are sorta specializing in what they do but no manufacturer wants to clearly state what is main purpose of their product to not shrink their sales.
I wouldn't just broadly dismiss the issues with the old Model color metallics as stemming from mica flakes. Goobertown hobbies did a great video where he looked at a bunch of miniature paints under a microscope, and one of the most interesting takeaways was that there really wasn't a correlation between the quality of metallic paints and whether they used mica vs metallic flakes. You can find aluminum flakes in some cheap, unpleasant craft paint metallics, and mica in some well-regarded miniature paint metallics.
I bought most of the game color range and both releases of the express color range when they hit the US and have been very happy. I used both old and new GC and the new range is so much better than the old GC range. For me it has been worth it. I've replaced all my old GC and Army Painter (not fanatic).
First, that cat! LOL Some dude on reddit mentioned that Golden Wetting Aid helps with reducing the bubbles. I tried it and it does indeed work much better than the other products I've tried.
Looks like I'll stay with AK. But it is good for all of us that each company is upping their game with better quality products. Even Army Painter is now on par in the race with everyone else. AK, Army Painter, Pro Acryl, Scale 75, Vallejo and many others - it is really good time for hobbyists.
Great stuff, thank you for your review. Truly hope you dont get lured into doing "signature series" paints and stick to being impartial and someone we can all trust.
By the way, with TTCombat expanding into 3rd wave and being very difficult to just try out (cheers Brexit), I think that's something you could set your eyes on for a swatch and video review in the future, once their product line is big / stable enough.
Big Vallejo fan here, haven't tried new range yet. Clear plastic bottles is great, but overall visual rebrand looks so cheap. Can't stand the new labels.
I now use a medium instead of just water to thin my paints. Never had bubbling and the consistency stays true. Plenty of vids on TH-cam showing how to make your own.
It really seems like the bubbling comes from user error than the paints themselves. Using heavily watered paints and using the brush to glob on the paint seems to be the cause.
Wrong. I've used almost every other brand of paint and Game Color was the first to have the bubbling issue for the main paint. Old army painter washes had it too. You should not have to work against the paint and treat it special just to not get it to bubble when no other line has the issue.
hi, thanx for all you videos ! Can I ask you a (stupid!) question ? can you please tell me the difference betweens vallejo inks and the new vallejo xpress ??? thanx a lot !!!
LOL at that example of paint bubbling 🤣. Anyone who paints in that way is going to see all kinds of issues with any type of paint. Your 2 miniature examples show intelligent painting practice which also shows no bubbling. Multiple thin coats should be the first skill we all master. Really LOL at that example of bubbling paint though 😂🤣
@@stahly_taleofpainters Thanks, I want to base my Horus Heresy Alpha Legion army on the old third edition lore where they have indigo armour and green symbols. Are you able to do another video where you investigated who made the best yellow paint but for a metallic colour, maybe silver? I'm really interested in who makes the best metallics now especially since you were very pleased with the Army Painter Fanatic metallic range.

*Us pros, swish the paint around in our mouths to get the bubbles out. We don't complain about it like some people..*
Using AP Warpaints Stabilizer for thinning helps with Bubbles.
Great review as usual. However, the bubble issue seems a little over-hyped. You needed to shake like hell, mix like you wanted to make whipped cream and apply a very thick coat of paint to the model. You could probably get bubbling with any paint brand under these conditions.....
I get bubbles with thin coats. Minimal shaking just to get it mixed.
@@RP-ck8ym :(
For my part I'm not sold on acrylic metallics. I use enamel and lacquer based metallics for superior coverage and ease of use.
Been waiting for this! I have a few new ones and a more important question than even bubbles for me is how well do they color match with the original range? I have a few new formula and some don't seem that close like the new Black Grey is much more Black than the original. Can be a problem if you want to continue old projects.
The ones I sampled for the video were pretty close, but as with any range overhauls there will surely be some colours that became different
So would you recommend Vallejo for beginners or are there brands that are more suited for beginners in painting?
One thing i like about the old Model colors, is the basic, plain packaging lol. Idk feels more professional
I so much want to buy a crate of all the model and game colors now. But you send me over to the AK 3rd Gen video… Let’s see how I feel afterwards.
I bought most of the game color range and both releases of the express color range when they hit the US and have been very happy. I used both old and new GC and the new range is so much better than the old GC range. For me it has been worth it. I've replaced all my old GC and Army Painter (not fanatic).
What about washes?
I just got my hands on blue wash and i was stunned to find out how much of a massive shift in color it is :(
Covered the washes in my Game Color video!
@@stahly_taleofpainters oh snap! i'll check that out!
hi stally in my country doesnt work patreon how can i buy your The color table of all brands?
Game color Polyurethane and Model Color varnish are all water based. I guess there's just some additive in one that reacts differently
Man, how did you paint that krieger, its faboluous
No bubbles if you thin it correctly
I was able to get the new range's ivory and I just got rid of the ivory I had from Pro Acryl because it's not even close.
Any of the 32 new colours a good match for Death Guard Green? 🤔
Great stuff, thank you for your review. Truly hope you dont get lured into doing "signature series" paints and stick to being impartial and someone we can all trust.
still waiting on new game color here in the states
Vallejo's Polyurethane varnishes and paints are water based. Like pretty much every other polyurethane for hobby
I'm still happy with the old range, except for the metallics
Excellent as always! Thank you!
By the way, with TTCombat expanding into 3rd wave and being very difficult to just try out (cheers Brexit), I think that's something you could set your eyes on for a swatch and video review in the future, once their product line is big / stable enough.
Definitely will!
Is Vallejo black still godlike and the best black paint ever?
Consistency is a bit different but it‘s still pretty great and very matt
Is the new Model Colour Black as good as the old Model Colour Black? That's my go to black!
It's still pretty good, same matte finish, just the consistency is a bit thinner
Looking forward to this!
The separation of pigments has always been the biggest issue with these paints from my point of view.
It was disgusting sometimes....
I feel like their graphic designer is a fan of yours 😉
Why is that? :D
Game color bubbled for me a ton without thinning, however if shaking too much is an issue then that will change things.
The painting habits you describe certainly exacerbate the problem, but you can sometimes hit it even with careful use while basecoating large areas.
Game colour is notorious for bubbles. It's the only brand of paint I've used where I've encountered this problem.
Hoping for a one coat basecoat miracle isn’t a good plan.
what exactly is the difference between the game and model colour ranges?
With the new formula, not much, mainly the selection of colours
@@stahly_taleofpainters thanks!
Who was that masked man? 👍🍻
hi, thanx for all you videos !
Can I ask you a (stupid!) question ?
can you please tell me the difference betweens vallejo inks and the new vallejo xpress ??? thanx a lot !!!
Difference (apart from the choice of colours) is the medium and flow properties. Angel Giraldez did a video on this on his channel :)
@@stahly_taleofpainters thanx!!!
Please do Pro Acryl! :D
Hey would you say Luftwaffe Uniform is an indigo colour or is it too much of a blue-grey?
More blue-grey, but could also work as denim. Or try Prussian Blue.
Probably can't watch the whole video right now, but I've saved it for later and I'll watch it tonight
GW take note: all colours on one sheet flyer 🤞
Can anyone share their Favourite paints among the new ones?
Thanks!
Much appreciated!
I think you mean base, shade, and light.
