That's crazy how thinning it out changes the effect that much. I might have to try that with small pieces on the dash of my car where the chrome trim has worn off.
Could you fake gold/copper look with using orange/yellow as a base instead of the black? Or does the color not matter because it's fully covered by the chrome paint?

I accidently did something similar when i was pre-mising my gold paint, i thought i ruined it, but after testing, the gold was still good and somewhat more shiny compared to before!
I don't use laquer based paints but pro modellers have mentioned thinning Mr Color at 20% paint. From what I can see the black gloss of the spoon is contributing to 50% of the result.
Well yeah the opaque gloss black is contributing most of the result because the chrome has been thinned out giving it opacity while the opaque gloss black helps reflectivity of the chrome. That’s how they make mirrors.
so we can use acrylic colors too? I am new to the modeling thing i want to know more before starting to paint the kits. i dont have mr.hobby stuff available to me. i do have generic acrylic paints and poring mediums available

Airbrush: xyz Needle: 0.3mm PSI: 18-20 Something simple but repeatable especially if you do multi paint ones or multi airbrush/needles

You can do this technique with Vallejo metal color chrome . The ratio is even higher, more thinner to paint. Lots of passes and drying time between coats. I remember you weren't impressed with the chrome from metal color but using this technique I can see some reflection in it. It's obviously no alclad. Try it out.

I remember watching a promotional video where they were demonstrating a automotive spray on chrome and what comes out of the spray gun is less than 1% their chrome pigment and the rest is deionized water So the 14 to 1 thinner to paint actually makes sense
That sort of ratio makes sense, when you consider how metallic paints function. Reducing the concentration keeps the flake (usually, but not always, mica...) from interfering with itself, and settling at angles not parallel or tangent to the surface that you're painting. It also makes the medium/binder less of a factor in getting the flake to lay down. You're never going to get it perfectly mirror reflective, but you can get impressively close with a combination of thin layers and wet sanding, basically just knocking back the high spots naturally created by the mica flake, and getting as close as possible to a glass-smooth surface through a process like this.
i came very close to discovering this myself, when i accidentally added thinner to Mr metallic, when i realized it i cleaned the airbrush and passed up the opportunity to discover this!!
Similar to painting NMM, surfaces appear more reflective when there are more shadows. The highest value (ie. brightness) is the same on all spoons from the light source, but thinning appears to preserve the shadow value (the black underneath) thereby increasing contrast and "shiny-ness".

Man, I loved my neo. it never messed up on me once. After 3 years, it still sprays beautifully. Of course I have way better one by now but that neo will always have a spot at the bench.
I got a jar of AlClad Chrome for for my B-17G (1/48 scale) build next summer when I can ventilate, now I'm wondering if I should go with this instead. Seems much more durable than AlClad. Thanks for the vid ... still waiting to see Olly!
I've always thinned the Mr. Hobby super metallics 50/50. I nevery spray it straight out of the jar. but seeing it thinned out like this is crazy. It makes sense though. If you let a bottle of alclad settle the jar is probably 99% thinner.
Just a tip, DO NOT PRE THIN PAINT & KEEP IT If your paint is getting old & start losing its original oil/thinner/media, immidiately thin it & use it or throw it away The thing is, thinner will chew its original oil/media that kept the paint fresh, so only thin paint you'll use, never pre thin paint you'll use MUCH later, like 3 or 2 month later Its okay to keep pre thin paint for 2 weeks
I am so happy I bought this paint on whim hoping it would polish up to a mirror shine. Up until this video I had thrown it in a corner, as it came out looking nothing like chrome. Now im about to try this trick out and see if mr color super metallic 2 can redeem himself.

I just went to my local hobby store and it turns out someone ordered the rest of their SM206 overnight. They had no idea why….I think I have a feeling why though! Loved the video. When I finally get my hands on some I’ll be giving this technique a shot!
Awesome tip! I like it out of the jar and it's a bonus that it makes a nice chrome. It does look like polished steel, which is a little darker than chrome. It would be interesting to do a chrome paint job, using this and a black chrome to shade Alclad chrome.
I think you're onto a winner with that idea , the spaz stix chrome clearer to me anyway seemed to be extremely thinned and low in pigment, maybe that's the answer , I think it's worth A go .

I was using the Sparmax MAX-3 for quite a while, was my first double action gravity fed AB and upgrade from the standard AB you get with a compressor kit. I still use it every now again but once I bought a Procon Boy 0.3mm Plat Ver. 2 and the Procon Boy Single Action 0.4mm they are my go to for everything. The single action is awesome!
I've watched a lot of your videos and thank you for sharing the methods in spraying. To me there really is only 1 Chrome paint on the market. SPECTRA CHROME. The parent company is based in Tampa Florida. it is sprayed over a black shiny base. You wash off the material with distilled water and leave to dry in 70 degree heat. You can then clear coat it which turns it a slight yellow tint. You just add a dash of blue to the lacquer and give it a good thick coat. It is a perfect chrome finish. I need to spray some bumpers on a 55 Cadillac and been considering other methods as we do not have a Spectra Chrome firm in Ireland. If anybody has any contacts for the Spectra Chrome liquids, I'd love to hear from you........MO

Good modeling community. I have seen a lot of videos of Chrome testing. I even seen that testirs is comming back out with a chrome paint. Have not used yet because it so hard to get. I think this video is very helpful will try once I am up running with air brush. But with all of that said I would like to share something I use and have a great results I think and that is dupli color perfect match universal chrome from the auto zone near me and it is very durable. But be careful it does come out fast so you dont need a lot. I also don't think it's to expensive it does do a long way. Well thanks everyone have a great day
Definitely shinier. Seems you can still see the black through the chrome through. Obviously you can apply more paint, but will that get you back towards the duller silver color?
be interesting to see a red candy lacquer over the top, the hot wheels customisers would normally need to polish the hell out of the casting but this may be an easy way.
LOL. i jus sprayed my RG Hi Nu gundam with this chrome silver, I didn't know it was pre thinned so I thinned it out...aaand then this video drops. what a small world sometimes! but yea can confirm this works, also if you matte coat it, it will take off the chrome look.
Another tip Use UENO black from mr hobby or VERY gloss black paint, preferably lacquer so it doesn't get eaten by lacquer Before painting any metallics, gloss black raises metallic color very quickly & give its true shine, some other surface will do, but black does it best Polishing the black paint until you can see your reflection, if it doesn't, the metallics won't be enough to be that chrome ish
Now when I get the super metallic I want to try the alclad gloss black as base, I think that this way the effect can be well highlighted! On the other hand, what do you think if an enamel is used as a base gloss (like Hunbrol Black Gloss)?
@@gabrielcouto1696 i haven't tried it But i heard you can spray on enamel paint after it completely cured (48 hour) & it might just be as good But i don't recommend it simply because lacquer > enamel > acrylic I have some enamel paint smear some parts when spraying clear paint to coat decals Those enamel was for washing/panel lining Generally in most hobby paints Mr hobby Lacquer is the strongest paint & will melt/eats tamiya enamel & tamiya acrylic paints Tamiya Enamel causes tamiya acrylic to melt or something, they just don't blend Acrylics works just fine on any paints, but tamiya acrylic thinner can erase mr hobby & tamiya lacquer, so that's why nobody use acrylic as washing/panel lining
@@somechinesedude5466 I have not tried to put MR.SMC on it either, but pieces that I have with enamel gloss black in my opinion reach a stronger and harder shine! so I thought it could be optimal for the chrome effect.
The effect seems to be the same as when you shoot fades. By adding so much thinner, you're reducing the amount of paint in each pass of the airbrush. Since the metallics want you to shoot very light coats, the thinned paint is essentially spraying even less than you normally would. Thanks for the tip!
I love my Procon Boy PS290 trigger style dual action airbrush! A neurological condition makes using a standard double action airbrush tricky at times for me. That is quite an impressive chrome effect you have done using the super metallic 2 heavily thinned :-)
Brilliant videos mate, really helped. Using silver, chrome paints the best base is black and a clear coat finish? what about gold and copper, you recommend yellow and red for those? When I used to do gild work, that would be our base colours for the gold, copper and silver leaf applications, so I'd assume that would work also for paints?

I've been told that Rapid Thinner is better for metallic paints, but this level of thinning is so far outside the normal use case that I'm not sure if this wisdom applies. - Does this work as a base for a candy coat? I read that the SM206 in particular has its shine dulled if you apply a GX clear color on top (although the Mr. Hobby website says that Aqueous Colours are OK).

Another awesome video full of useful information and tips. Keep up the great work doing all of this testing and love the no nonsense approach. You just tell it like it is and that is what keeps me coming back to this channel for advice. If you end up testing some clear coats on this, please post the results, would be very interested. Being a lacquer I would expect it to behave much like the allclad chrome, but you never know until you try.
Now I understand why this particular jar is always sold out. Kinda curious to see if this same trick will work with other chrome colors. Wouldn't mind stretching my $30 bottle of the Gaianotes premium chrome a little farther.

Thanks for the heads up on this stuff. Was in the need of a new airbrush as well. Polishing the needles and seats of a gmaster only gets you so far.

LOL. i jus sprayed my RG Hi Nu gundam with this chrome silver, I didn't know it was pre thinned so I thinned it out...aaand then this video drops. what a small world sometimes! but yea can confirm this works, also if you matte coat it, it will take off the chrome look.
Use gloss coat instead
Use it light & use it several time while also polishing it every layer
Another tip
Use UENO black from mr hobby or VERY gloss black paint, preferably lacquer so it doesn't get eaten by lacquer
Before painting any metallics, gloss black raises metallic color very quickly & give its true shine, some other surface will do, but black does it best
Polishing the black paint until you can see your reflection, if it doesn't, the metallics won't be enough to be that chrome ish
Now when I get the super metallic I want to try the alclad gloss black as base, I think that this way the effect can be well highlighted! On the other hand, what do you think if an enamel is used as a base gloss (like Hunbrol Black Gloss)?

But i heard you can spray on enamel paint after it completely cured (48 hour) & it might just be as good
But i don't recommend it simply because lacquer > enamel > acrylic
I have some enamel paint smear some parts when spraying clear paint to coat decals
Those enamel was for washing/panel lining
Generally in most hobby paints
Mr hobby Lacquer is the strongest paint & will melt/eats tamiya enamel & tamiya acrylic paints
Tamiya Enamel causes tamiya acrylic to melt or something, they just don't blend
Acrylics works just fine on any paints, but tamiya acrylic thinner can erase mr hobby & tamiya lacquer, so that's why nobody use acrylic as washing/panel lining
@@somechinesedude5466 I have not tried to put MR.SMC on it either, but pieces that I have with enamel gloss black in my opinion reach a stronger and harder shine! so I thought it could be optimal for the chrome effect.

Everyone loves Alclad Chrome but i love Mr Color Super Chrome Silver 2, it's much tougher than Alclad and easier to use
The effect seems to be the same as when you shoot fades. By adding so much thinner, you're reducing the amount of paint in each pass of the airbrush. Since the metallics want you to shoot very light coats, the thinned paint is essentially spraying even less than you normally would. Thanks for the tip!

I love my Procon Boy PS290 trigger style dual action airbrush! A neurological condition makes using a standard double action airbrush tricky at times for me. That is quite an impressive chrome effect you have done using the super metallic 2 heavily thinned :-)

If you use alclad you'll notice it's terrible on finish of anything touches it, even after drying.

Brilliant videos mate, really helped. Using silver, chrome paints the best base is black and a clear coat finish? what about gold and copper, you recommend yellow and red for those? When I used to do gild work, that would be our base colours for the gold, copper and silver leaf applications, so I'd assume that would work also for paints?

Thanks for showing this trick! I wanna try this myself, but I've got a couple questions:
- Does the type of thinner used make a difference? I've been told that Rapid Thinner is better for metallic paints, but this level of thinning is so far outside the normal use case that I'm not sure if this wisdom applies.
- Does this work as a base for a candy coat? I read that the SM206 in particular has its shine dulled if you apply a GX clear color on top (although the Mr. Hobby website says that Aqueous Colours are OK).
It works as a great base for any topping including candy colors or Mr GX line. I wouldn't put any clear on top of it unless it's a clear candy color

Nice, neat trick. So basically you're turning the paint into Alclad II paints because they're all thinned very much as well.

Another awesome video full of useful information and tips. Keep up the great work doing all of this testing and love the no nonsense approach. You just tell it like it is and that is what keeps me coming back to this channel for advice. If you end up testing some clear coats on this, please post the results, would be very interested. Being a lacquer I would expect it to behave much like the allclad chrome, but you never know until you try.

Now I understand why this particular jar is always sold out. Kinda curious to see if this same trick will work with other chrome colors. Wouldn't mind stretching my $30 bottle of the Gaianotes premium chrome a little farther.
I wonder if this would also have good results with a brush. Small parts like hydraulic pistons would be overkill for an airbrush.
