    I've always heard that the base coat can really affect how vibrant a gold layer will be. Can you do a similar video with your top three colors over the top of different colored base coats (say grey, white, and red) to see how the base coat effects the final look?

    • @tylerttinsley
      @tylerttinsley 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Came here to make a similar comment. Not all metallics are made to be painted over black. But I would also say that using only the top three is a bad idea because these paints already are proven to be good with black.
      It’s likely not worth making another video

    Honestly best looking gold I've seen so far is Vallejo model color Bronze. Yeah it's a bit funny how "bronze" is the best gold but it really is just incredible. To my eye at least it registers far more as a gold that has been forged into armor than any of the gold paints do.

      @@jpf338 Well I simply apply it with a brush over primer,it's actually insane how well it covers everything,straight up just one thin coat is all you need. As for the latter question I highlight it by just doing some color mixing,so you know adding some shades of green and purple to it as glazes and then for the shadows I just mix the bronze paint with bit of black,any black will do but I use Kimera kolors for that.
      If you're not a fan of manually painting your shadows or you're painting many models at the same time you could just use a wash and it would be fine.

    Shortly after the war, my grandfather made decorative shop windows by hand. It was not like today that you can order everything. So he did everything from scratch letters, posters, decor of the site itself. From my mother's stories, I know that he was just using the kind of gold you presented from green stuff world. In addition, he blown it with a glass tube on the decorated surface, sometimes mixed with various types of medium. In Poland, we call this product "gold", we can call it a gold pigment. You can certainly get these pigments from any well-stocked artist store. Sometimes the best solutions are those discovered long ago, why reinvent the wheel :) At least when you mix paints in this way, you can feel like Leonardo da Vinci creating paint from a combination of pigment and egg yolk. Regards, a very factual review you can learn a lot.

A little tip I've learned through the years is if you use a metallic silver or chrome under coat it helps gold paint pop and have a more mirrored metallic finish

    GSW Pure Gold is by far my favorite, followed by Citadel Retributor and, close enough, Scale 75.

In terms of the 'goldiest' (nice word btw) gold, an example of actual gold to compare the models to might have made for a more definitive or better defined comparison. Vallejo metal color are the best silver ones hands down, but I always thought the gold looked off

    Not surprised about retributor, it's one of the best metallic paints.
    Other ones missed out that are worth a look - Darkstar Molten Metals and the Warcolors Nostalgia 88 Shining Gold.

    Fascinating test mate. Sooooooo many variations I think I'd still go the colour I want first rather than how it paints out of a brush or airbrush. No point having a colour that goes on well but which you don't actually like the colour of!

    To get a dark gold I mix Citadel Retributor Gold with Vallejo Gun Metal Grey airbrush. As both have a metallic edge to them they blend well and give a really nice deep, dark gold effect 😊 love the video and may well be investing in some P3 paints to see what they're like 👍

    What might have been interesting would be to have put a few different grades of gold next to the models to see how close to the real thing they get.
    Another thing I had a crazy idea about was trying gold leaf for the fun of it as I have some silver and gold leaf materials for jewellery use. Quite likely too expensive and fiddly for real usage, but I'm curious to see how it might come out. If I can find where I put the stuff I have I might give it a try sometime.

    Very informative. I’ve been loving the ProAcryl golds for some time now and good to see it rank highly. It would have been nice to see how the same paints brush onto miniatures too. Strokes on black paper look very different to on figures as a whole.

    I've used proacryl for a year now, LOVE them! Brush, airbrush, the whole line is consistent and awesome! The paints are affordable (22ml bottle with shaker included) The downside is actually getting them! the main sets are out of stock very often. Also, as a side note, the folks also stream tutorials on twitch and through their website. (Hello Jason and Jen!!) I am NOT endorsed by Monument Hobbies! Just a fan!

    I like Alclad II Pale Gold. It's a lacquer paint and airbrush only but if I'm able to airbrush whatever it is I want to be gold then I like the results I get with it.

    THE BEST medium for the gold from Greenstuff World is to mix it about 50/50 with a 50/50 of vallejo airbrush thinner and vallejo gloss polyurethane varnish.
    This is one of the best golds and the only thing better/more reflective/shinnier is a spaz stix chrome over a super gloss black primer with alclad II candy gold over the top (all thru an airbrush) which is hard to do right, a toxic pain to deal with, and only good for larger surfaces or whole models.

    I definitely like the pro acryl metallics. The rich gold is my go to gold now, as I prefer a slightly warmer color, but they also have another gold that is more of a cold yellow. Their metallics remind me of scale75, but have better coverage and I feel are easier to apply, as they have the same smooth consistency that the non metallic pro acryl paints do

    Here's hoping we get a summary of just the brush scores over on Squidly Bits . . . if I'm doing gold detail (trim on armour as an example), I'm doing that just with a brush - and I suspect not a huge amount of gold airbrushing going on (except for Custodes)

    I was surprised at how poorly the Metal Color did, considering how great my experiences have been with their silvers.

      He's not wrong though, the MC gold is dull and lacks the lustre of the scale 75 or the pro acryl. A real step down from their MC other metallics.

    • @Tarrasque87
      @Tarrasque87 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theinternetofrandomthings7796 Its a white gold. It uses aluminium flakes like all the other VMC colours and I think that won't allow for a rich, yellow gold.

    I would be very interested in a video where you show the colours you use the most. There has been a video where you describe why you don't need a thousand colours, but usually everbody has more colours than he really needs- and everbody has 5-20 favourite colours that are used as the basic for most projects.

    I would prefer lacquer instead of acrylic when it comes to metal paint. Especially when you are already using the airbrush. Try Gaia notes star bright gold or use star bright silver and then paint a layer of clear yellow/orange over it. It is much smoother with finer pigment
