- Zermatt still has a unique old part of the village which is typical of this area of Switzerland. That is a must-see when you visit Zermatt. There you can still find the typical Upper Valais barns and granaries. These stand on stilts and have round stone mice slabs.
The barns, granaries, stables and old houses date back to the 16th to 18th centuries, and anyone who squeezes through the narrow alleyways feels as if they are in ancient times.
