You could fill this entire list with stuff that led to ww1.

It's easy to say "bad decisions" when they didn't have the benefit of hindsight back then and dealt with a war quite unlikely any other before in history. They were literally in uncharted waters and had to learn as they went along. The worst decisions in WWI was allowing Germany to sign an armistice in November 1918 thereby starting a persistent myth they were never defeated and even were on the verge of winning when they were betrayed by their own. Had they invaded Germany proper in 1919 then the locals would have experienced what it means like to have a war at your doorstep and therefore would have been unlikely to listen to Hitler and his propaganda nonsense later.
Thing is, there was almost nobody left to invade with. France's armies had been almost totally destroyed, Britain was bankrupt and losing its grip on the colonies. Neither nation had any appetite at all for an invasion of Germany.
So Australia has its Emu war, Britain has the Cod war, now China has the 4 pests campaign.

After World War II, Stalin took over the governments in Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, , Poland, Romania , Yugoslavia.Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Not only did the allies mess up with appeasement, there was a moment where almost all of Germany’s tanks and motorized vehicles were in a massive gridlock. France and England knew they were there and all they had to do was order a bombing on them and Germany would of lost around 90% of their army
I had read that when the Chinese 'Treasure Fleet' had discovered no notable resistance, that there was nothing of interest outside of China and thus they became insular.
China with the treasure fleet thinks that it doesn’t need foreign trade with any barbarians until they rise and fall in on themselves until the europeans knock on their door to answer which is why china isolated itself from the rest of the world is not a good idea.
Drawing dodgy lines on African maps was sure smart if they wanted a divided continent to conquer!

But that is the problem of Communism, not neccesarily the Chinese.. Within Communism there is a single leader.. And what he says happens.. Even if the rest of the regime disagrees with it.. Which is why Democracy is extremely important.. No-one can mess up a nation to bad..
But that is also the same reason why nothing significant ever seems to get done in Democracies either.. You are unable to really make sigificant chances unless you have a large majority of votes.. And even then you still have to convince your party members or coalition members to help you

Austria-Hungry's leadership had decided they wanted to destroy Serbia as power in the region rather than seeking to limit or check Serbian expansionist goals. The carte blanche assurance was the first domino which set in motion the chain of military alliances to click into place and the mobilization plans which once started forced everyone else's mobilization and war plans to be set into motion. Without full German backing, Austria-Hungary would have had to set more modest goals in dealing with Serbia and the First World War might never have happened.
The Great War led to the destruction of three empires (German, Austria-Hungry and Imperial Russia), the critical weakening of two others (British and French), the rise of both Fascism and Communism, the Second World War and the Cold War after that. Let's not forget the death's of 17 million people in the First World War alone. So I think that put's the Kaiser and his adviser's decision to blindly back Austria-Hungry's move against Serbia near the very top of any list of monumentally bad decisions.

However, I would suggest that Europe at the end of the 19th century going into the 20th century were like a bunch of adolescent teen-aged boys; aggressive, wanting to showoff their manhood. There was always going to be a war. It just happened to be the Arch-Duke assassination that started it.

The Children's Crusade of 1212, Operation Barbarossa of 1941, Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 and the Gallipoli campaign of WW1 in 1915-1916 especially the landing at Cape Helles, also the entire Battle of Verdun in 1916, in fact you could probably add most of WW1. The date was about 1420AD, or thereabouts.
Yes! These giant vessels were called Chinese Treasure Ships that were commissioned by Admiral Zheng He. But sadly, he did not command most of them, nor were they really used for merchant trading, but instead just for VIP figures to float up the Yangtze River. Seems they may have turned out to be overkill. And worst of all, the new Emperor left these giants to rot in harbor, not needing them. DRAG!
Yes, it is a real Chinese vessel. No, it is nowhere near the size of modern Aircraft Carriers.
They were, as Halpin2006 stated, part of a massive fleet commanded by Admiral Zheng He, and were eventually left in the harbor to rot and were then burned and destroyed so that the country could remain isolationist.

The Allies allowing Hitler to just slowly step over the line again and again sounds like what Russia has been doing with Ukraine, Poland, Moldova, etc.
Hitler said he wanted to unite the German people. That's why he wanted Alsace Lorraine, the Sudetenland, and the Anschluss with Austria.

Same thing is happening with china and the south china sea. Appeasement is happening with them too and we're doing nothing to stop them
@@dictatorofthecheese there's a difference between building islands on reefs, claiming uninhabited islands (actively disputed between China and Japan) and violently annexing sovereign countries in their entirety. Nuance and context are actually kinda important.
There's very little political support for US military involvement as a means of guaranteeing Crimea and some uninhabited islands do not fall into the hands of Russia and China, respectively. There's also very little strategic payoff for the treasure and possible blood the US would invest in such ventures.
Japan and South Korea are perfectly capable of sticking up for themselves, and Ukraine is not part of NATO. What the fuck do we gain from using our military to force the Russians out of Crimea other than "showing the Russians who's boss?" What the fuck do we gain by using our military to force the Chinese to stop building islands and give up their claim to the Senkaku islands other than "putting China in their place?" There's no oil, fresh water aquifer, diamonds or gold up for grabs.
Lastly, our answer to the Chinese was the goddamn TPP, which included all of the major pacific powers *except for China.* It would have given us a huge economic advantage in the region....but a bunch of dumbasses with no understanding of foreign policy, international affairs or trade policy on both the left and the right called for it termination in the 2016 election. China has created their own version of the World Bank and their own version of the TPP in the meantime (without any US input).
And now, Georgia.
Basically, our desire and need for control of EVERYTHING and a general superiority complex on the part of individual groups, man, and choice to exert that control by exploiting others for one’s own personal gain, and a lack of empathy and desire to understand our fellow man led to most of these mistakes
It’s unlimited that everyone wants to rule the world because of many reasons being greed, lust, hubris but the biggest ones are being megalomaniacal/power hungry and absolute ambition that leads to great people to their own demise and the fall of their own civilizations for their entire self interest. Aboard with them having absolute power, wreath and authority is to much power that can only make them cruel; With great power comes great responsibility and a greater sense is that of the must important rule of thumb for all Rulers and Leaders is this: NO ONE RULES ALONE for that you needed somebody else underneath you who is in charge of the military, businesses, the law and other matters.

One of the first few hundred verified is more accurate. I like the video and am making a minor point. Intentional genocide is probably as old as primates and certainly as old as Homo Sapiens. Mongol invasions are way too late.

Hey! I love your videos but just thought I should say I covered appeasement in my dissertation and there's a strong reformist argument suggesting it wasn't a mistake at all. Indeed, following the testing of Blitzkrieg in Spain and the French commitment to relying on the Maginot line as opposed to striking first Chamberlain and Britain had no choice but to wait and build up their own military. Even during the early stages of appeasement there was no way the western Allies could have defeated Germany, and whilst you say this gave Germany more chance to prepare it more crucially gave Britain the chance to rearm following the inter-war period of disarmament.
This isn't an argument I particularly agree or disagree with, I just think based on what strong opposition there is to the 'guilty men' argument you advocate here appeasement shouldn't make a list of top 5 biggest mistakes, especially with there being worse mistakes later in the war from both sides.

Never heard of the 4 pests program. That’s interesting I always thought Mao just sold the grain which caused the famine. I think everyone wants mosquitoes to be extinct but it would probably have devastating effects on the ecosystem.

How about reading Pat Buchanan's Unnecessary War. The biggest mistake was really the extremely unfair Versailles Treaty. If a better treaty had been adopted, and Wilson's pledges supported, then no Hitler. Even going back further was not supporting the Kaiser in trying to stop WW1. It was the stupidity of the Austrian Hungarian empire to not agree with the Serbian response to terms that was the real mistake if you go back further. If Britain had not entered WW1 the war would have been just another Franco German War and no Hitler and no Stalin. if France was stupid enough not to work with Germany for peace. Also if the US had not entered WW1 then there would have never been the horrible Versailles Treaty. You are just so uninformed about WW2.
Clifford Nelson you have to remember there was huge feeling of nationality around the middle to late 19 th century. The competing countries were Britain, France, Germany and the Austrian-Hungarian empire. Russia was trying to catch up an d modernising there military, USA was getting over the Civil War. Germany publicly yearned for the British Empire. He saw he needed a huge powerful navy to challenge the Royal Navy. All this worried France, whose lifelong enemy are the Germans since peace with Britain had been achieved the previous century.
All caused a huge arms race and inflated militaries. The politicians played sabre rattling over the smallest matter. Yes mistakes where made especially in Africa (borders). In the lead up WW1, a series of dominoes where lined up to balance naturally thus making sure the 2 camps (on 1 side Britain, France, Russia & others - on the other German, Austro-Hungary, & others) kept the peace. The problem with their scheme is they did see once a small infraction triggered the 1st domino there was no way of stopping the knock on effect and reversing its progress. Nationalism so to that!
So 1 mans stupid act (Mr Princip), caused over 5 million needless deaths.
