@@QuartzIsAnOxide It's not 50fps, it's 50hz. Low FPS just makes games choppy at the same speed. But 50hz is a different thing. It literally puts the game in slow motion.

HolyAarom Playstation systems never had backwards compatibility in the first place aside from the PS2. This is one of the biggest gripes I have with this system family.

Every Nintendo product I've bought has also worked as intended and advertised. I don't know what Sony is doing going from such a great start this gen with the ps4, to regularly half-assing things and making poor business decisions that even make the Xbox seem better in comparison.

Rayman is a gorgeous game, but it looks muted on this thing. I played the original disk a couple of weeks ago and the colors are much more vibrant and bright. This emulation is terrible.
One of the things I like about this console is actually a cost saving measure they used. The wire for the controllers is simply plugged into the logic board via micro usb, so you can replace the cable if it's ever damaged or put in a longer cable
The thing that baffles me is that they clearly have the license for certain games like Castlevania, Tombi ETC as they are released and sold on their PSN. Surely it would have been cheaper for them to include them on the console as they wouldn't have had to buy extra licenses. But we all know why they did this, because people wouldn't have bought their re-releases and PSN versions if they included on this console. Pure selfish cash grab with 0 care for customers.
drummerguy 85 lol Rainbow Six itself was actually a great game on PC and Dreamcast decent on N64 but the PS1 just lacked the processing power to run it so was completely changed and is an atrocious port.

The reason the vita was abandoned and not supported according to sony was that "the climate was not healthy." I wonder if they will blame the "unhealthy climate" of the classics for this failure............. Smh for the half effort expecting massive success.
What was even wierder to me was the fact that they kept coming with updates for it but wouldn't put any games out for it.It was so confusing I still have my vita I just haven't played it in a while.

Why does it not come with a power brick. I know it's something small and most people have a couple laying around in there house. But if I spend over $100 Canadian on it, I would like to have a power brick with it.

If I were playstation I would have made the menus more like how the demo disks came. Rocking music, sound effects, little bits of info on the games your gonna start, have little transitions when you start games that feel very 90s too. You could have had a lot of fun on the menu to give it that 90s feel and everything with an option to make it minimalist like what they give you on the default for people that just want to plug it in and play without the bells and whistles.

I saw DreamcastGuy’s Ps1 Classic fried pretty easy. I contacted Sony about how they could make the thing better as I feel like it could be a great product with some work. Just fix the presentation, graphical errors in games like Final Fantasy 7, make the circuits better so they don’t easily fry, and replace the Pal roms with NTSC
Hi, on the sony classic, DIGITAL FOUNDRY ,says it is a cluster fk, the games play badly glitching dropping frames, terrible frame rate, even blurry visuals!!!! wow sony fked up badly. even the psp plays these ps1 games better that this classic system.
Pretty sad that this is Sony's attempt to "copy" Nintendo's retro success. As it is emulation, there is no reason for it to be like this. Thank goodness I still have my OG PS1 and games so I can enjoy them as they were. NES Classic had the NTSC versions of games unless they were exclusive releases for Europe (like Bubble Bobble). Here in Europe we also prefer the NTSC systems and US versions of games :). PAL really sucks :).

The PS1/N64 era was a time when everything was impressive because everything was new. Unfortunately (unlike Nintendo) Sony wasn't the best developer on their console. They relied on third parties too much. And those third parties were still feeling things out.
Ape Escape, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken, Gran Turismo. All these were on PlayStation and they were pretty good. So while I don't completely agree I see your point. I'm from South Africa. And would you believe me if I said we never got the N64 here. I've never seen one. I grew up playing on the PS and it was awesome. I'll have me some Zelda on the N64 though.
I mean, now it's $25 and the modding for it seems great. But, without modding? Nah... It's fine for $25, especially to a non-serious gamer. But, at launch? Yeah, this was an absolute disappointment. I'd only recommend it for modders or people that wouldn't know the missing games AND wouldn't care about the pal versions (which is a lot more rare than you'd think).
I am so glad that I never bought this pos. Sony really ruined their running for any hope of a participation trophy for any console war ever. Sony officially has lost both credibility and relevance.
This classic console is really bad, but you are crazy if you think this will kill their whole presence in the gaming market. Nintendo survived the debacle that was the Wii U. Microsoft survived the disastrous launch of the XBox One. Sony will survive this far easier than either of those situations.

I think they should improve the emulation on it too. Honestly, it'd probably just be better cramming a Rasberry Pi in this thing. That way, with better hardware and emulation, you can getter smoother framerates and HD resolution.
I would love a Saturn Mini/classic. The Saturn was so expensive, and honestly still is now. This gives sega a real chance to show off there amazing library that doesn't get the credit it deserves while giving Sony the finger.
I think this is a good representation of how good Nintendo games age compared to their competitors. The games aren’t worse and not playable. This is how they were... I remember feeling the difference back in the day.
Fun fact: The original Tomb Raider (possibly the sequels too) was MADE for displaying a 50Hz resolution/size. The NTSC versions of Tomb Raider actually look stretched and do reflect not Lara's intended look.
Just found out that 9 of the games on the PlayStation Classic are PAL. Being from Coventry, England I am slightly feeling a "now you know what it feels like" feeling towards everyone who grew up with NTSC. Don't get me wrong I love PAL, played it all my life, but have always been envious of NTSC-Region players. Still surprised that they released it with PAL versions on though
David White I’m from Derby in the UK where Core who made Tomb Raider was based. I was actually security on the gate to the Entrance of Pride Park where Core was based in the early 00s. I still to this day only live 10 miles out of Derby Town Centre.

Maybe Sony should have hired a couple of hackers/modders to at least replicate an almost perfect PS One experience, just like how Sega puts some faith on Taxman/Stealth to recreate almost perfect ports of classic Sonic games.

If you want pretty pixels to stimulate your demanding eyes then go play NEW games. Everything you (and apparently a lot of other commenters on here) wanted such as borders and graphic upgrades cost MONEY, updating the specs to run 20+ non PAL games cost MONEY, and I can assure you that an office full of people much smarter than you decided that the cost of these upgrades would be impossible to implement on a CLASSIC PLUG AND PLAY without raising the MSRP to a level that would have made 0 sense. P.S - Sorry for the caps, I just figured you were yelling so I might as well join in on the fun.
Lol the whole point of classic is to play them how they were on original hardware and this does not. This can't even play them right or how they were on original hardware. They over priced it as well, Sony thinks because there name is on it they can sell it at a premium.
Lol also your argument that they decided that it wasn't cost effective is hilarious. They're using a open source emulator, which means it cost them 0 and the game's they have on the list are first part games so the cost is dam near zero. They saw Nintendo selling millions of classic's and said how can we make one as cheap as possible while costing us dam near zero.
The retro ps1 and retro nes classic should go out for lunch and have a beer 🍻. Both are completely laggy and nothing more than an expensive door stop. The snes classic was done right and it's the only one I don't regret buying. I think it would have been better to just make a retro playstation that played all the games in 1080p for a ps1 ps2 combo system. Sony completely choked on this much like how the neo geo did a few years ago. When the games look and feel better from the late 90s on the original console and it almost 20 years later and it worse off now!?! Somebody needs to lose their job at Sony. This is a disaster and they need to make it right and need to do it right now. Thanks RGT 85 for the review.
PS1's 3D actually was the WORST of its Generation. There were so many glaring Drawbacks that weren't recognized at the time. For One, the PSX actually does a rather POOR job at texture and layering, it only handles Basic Texturing,Basic Mapping,Low Res Shading and slow Bilinear Filtering, does a SLOPPY job at mapping, and because it doesn't use Anti Affine Infinite Plane Bumping or Affine Plane Deflection, it has mis shaped,oblong looking environments. PS1 also lacked Diffusion and Perspective Correction(Correcting incorrectly drawn Infinite Planes), Diffusion is a method that prevents warping, Saturn utilized Diffusion(Which is simply CPU recalculation of Maps and Environments) , Nintendo 64 used Quad Layering(Reshaping and Changing Map and Environment shapes) and Multi Bending(Bending Layers and shaping them) to prevent Warping, PS1 was incapable of drawing properly shaped maps and environments. PS1 lacked Multi Threading, The SEGA Saturn and Nintendo 64 were both capable of Multi Threading. Multi Threading is the method of correcting and calculating Geometrics/Rendered Polygons AND the method of combining them with bended and redrawn Sprites. PS1 had no proper way of Proper Mapping. This was SEGA SATURN's biggest advantage over its competitors. Saturn used Bit Mapping, it used its SH-2 Dual Core 32-bit CPU to Recalculate Layers and Mapped models. As we mentioned, Nintendo 64 didn't handle Bit Mapping, its loophole was Quad Layering. This is why Saturn and N64 games have no screen tearing or polygon clipping. Another severe drawback of PS1: No Z Buffering. With only 48KBs of Chache on with 12KBs each on 4 Dies it only used Basic Frame Buffering and Low Resolution Filtering, INFERIOR to Saturn's Stunning 512KBs of Chache for Z Buffering and N64's 128KBs Chache of Z Buffering. This is why games like Crash Bandicoot 2, Cool Borders have such a grainy and blurry look. Now to the BIGGEST problem of the PlayStation 1: Its 2D was a complete and UTTER joke. Complete TRASH. Keep in Mind, that in the Early and Mid 90s, 3D was drawn with the use of 2D wire Frames, and 2D layers, 3D was always used at the time as a Touchup, a "Finisher" feature. 2D was RAM heavy. PS1 only used 1 MB only. Saturn used 4 MBs and could use up to 8 MBs, and N64 used 5 MBs and could use up to 10 MBs. To utilize proper 2D layers and Frames, Paralax Scrolling,Transparency,Dithering and Reflection are required. These are ALL features Nintendo 64 and EVEN SEGA Saturn could do. PS1 couldn't do either of these.(And NO, PS1 can't do actual Transparency, it did HALF Transparency through low key Illumination). The ONLY advantage PS1 had over its competitors was how it drew Polygons. It drew larger sized polygons and allowed for more rendered ones to be drawn simultaneously and also used Screen Filters to make their games look better to the naked eye. But that's pretty much it. Without proper 3D layering,mapping and texturing techniques, these capabilities are MOOT. SEGA Saturn and Nintendo 64 got the last laugh after all, in the Aging department and in History. Love SEGA? Looking forward to the Genesis Elite/Mini? It'll be out Next May. Also, look out for The RAZOR!!!
Why not buy a PS2 and be able to play every PS1 game plus every PS2 game. (and if you really want to play a PS1 over HDMI than you can do that on an early PS3 model although IMO I think PS1 and PS2 games look better over a component or composite signal than HDMI.) You could also buy a PS3 and those are all backwards compatible with PS1 games. (Only the earlier models are backwards compatible with PS2.) I would not recommend anybody waste their money or space on a PS Classic unless you really just love the look of the thing. (That’s the best thing about this device, it looks nice.)

Somehow this ended up being the biggest disappointment of the year despite Fallout 76 and Metal Gear Survive both coming out in 2018.

Rayman is a gorgeous game, but it looks muted on this thing. I played the original disk a couple of weeks ago and the colors are much more vibrant and bright. This emulation is terrible.
I've said it before and will say it again, Sony don't care about their consumers any more and have forgotten their roots.

One of the things I like about this console is actually a cost saving measure they used. The wire for the controllers is simply plugged into the logic board via micro usb, so you can replace the cable if it's ever damaged or put in a longer cable
But no DualShock also crap games and it sucks more than the GS5

The thing that baffles me is that they clearly have the license for certain games like Castlevania, Tombi ETC as they are released and sold on their PSN. Surely it would have been cheaper for them to include them on the console as they wouldn't have had to buy extra licenses. But we all know why they did this, because people wouldn't have bought their re-releases and PSN versions if they included on this console. Pure selfish cash grab with 0 care for customers.

The reason the vita was abandoned and not supported according to sony was that "the climate was not healthy." I wonder if they will blame the "unhealthy climate" of the classics for this failure............. Smh for the half effort expecting massive success.

I still use my Vita to this day. It deserves more support than it got. I mainly use it for PS1 games and some JRPGs.

If I were playstation I would have made the menus more like how the demo disks came. Rocking music, sound effects, little bits of info on the games your gonna start, have little transitions when you start games that feel very 90s too. You could have had a lot of fun on the menu to give it that 90s feel and everything with an option to make it minimalist like what they give you on the default for people that just want to plug it in and play without the bells and whistles.

I saw DreamcastGuy’s Ps1 Classic fried pretty easy. I contacted Sony about how they could make the thing better as I feel like it could be a great product with some work. Just fix the presentation, graphical errors in games like Final Fantasy 7, make the circuits better so they don’t easily fry, and replace the Pal roms with NTSC
You could actually buy a Raspberry Pi for $30 get a Playstation Case for $10 and it would be basically the same and perform better. Well done Sony...

NES Classic had the NTSC versions of games unless they were exclusive releases for Europe (like Bubble Bobble). Here in Europe we also prefer the NTSC systems and US versions of games :). PAL really sucks :).

The PS1/N64 era was a time when everything was impressive because everything was new. Unfortunately (unlike Nintendo) Sony wasn't the best developer on their console. They relied on third parties too much. And those third parties were still feeling things out.

And would you believe me if I said we never got the N64 here. I've never seen one. I grew up playing on the PS and it was awesome. I'll have me some Zelda on the N64 though.

I mean, now it's $25 and the modding for it seems great. But, without modding? Nah... It's fine for $25, especially to a non-serious gamer. But, at launch? Yeah, this was an absolute disappointment. I'd only recommend it for modders or people that wouldn't know the missing games AND wouldn't care about the pal versions (which is a lot more rare than you'd think).

This classic console is really bad, but you are crazy if you think this will kill their whole presence in the gaming market. Nintendo survived the debacle that was the Wii U. Microsoft survived the disastrous launch of the XBox One. Sony will survive this far easier than either of those situations.

I second that! In fact, I hate NTSC as the games and music are always too quick and it makes it harder to play cause it’s running too fast!
Fun fact: The original Tomb Raider (possibly the sequels too) was MADE for displaying a 50Hz resolution/size. The NTSC versions of Tomb Raider actually look stretched and do reflect not Lara's intended look.
Just found out that 9 of the games on the PlayStation Classic are PAL. Being from Coventry, England I am slightly feeling a "now you know what it feels like" feeling towards everyone who grew up with NTSC. Don't get me wrong I love PAL, played it all my life, but have always been envious of NTSC-Region players. Still surprised that they released it with PAL versions on though
David White I’m from Derby in the UK where Core who made Tomb Raider was based. I was actually security on the gate to the Entrance of Pride Park where Core was based in the early 00s. I still to this day only live 10 miles out of Derby Town Centre.

Maybe Sony should have hired a couple of hackers/modders to at least replicate an almost perfect PS One experience, just like how Sega puts some faith on Taxman/Stealth to recreate almost perfect ports of classic Sonic games.

I think the hype created over-expectations which eventually lead to all this dissapointment. For 99$ I think it's perfect for what I wanted it for, FF7, Resident Evil and MGS. Although I knew the moment you started bitching about the tape peeling off some of the boxing that you were going to be the most nit-picky reviewer I've seen in a while, but the whole idea behind CLASSIC RETRO GAMES is for the nostalgia. If you want pretty pixels to stimulate your demanding eyes then go play NEW games. Everything you (and apparently a lot of other commenters on here) wanted such as borders and graphic upgrades cost MONEY, updating the specs to run 20+ non PAL games cost MONEY, and I can assure you that an office full of people much smarter than you decided that the cost of these upgrades would be impossible to implement on a CLASSIC PLUG AND PLAY without raising the MSRP to a level that would have made 0 sense.

Lol the whole point of classic is to play them how they were on original hardware and this does not. This can't even play them right or how they were on original hardware. They over priced it as well, Sony thinks because there name is on it they can sell it at a premium.
Lol also your argument that they decided that it wasn't cost effective is hilarious. They're using a open source emulator, which means it cost them 0 and the game's they have on the list are first part games so the cost is dam near zero. They saw Nintendo selling millions of classic's and said how can we make one as cheap as possible while costing us dam near zero.

The retro ps1 and retro nes classic should go out for lunch and have a beer 🍻. Both are completely laggy and nothing more than an expensive door stop. The snes classic was done right and it's the only one I don't regret buying. I think it would have been better to just make a retro playstation that played all the games in 1080p for a ps1 ps2 combo system. Sony completely choked on this much like how the neo geo did a few years ago. When the games look and feel better from the late 90s on the original console and it almost 20 years later and it worse off now!?! Somebody needs to lose their job at Sony. This is a disaster and they need to make it right and need to do it right now. Thanks RGT 85 for the review.

PS1's 3D actually was the WORST of its Generation. There were so many glaring Drawbacks that weren't recognized at the time. For One, the PSX actually does a rather POOR job at texture and layering, it only handles Basic Texturing,Basic Mapping,Low Res Shading and slow Bilinear Filtering, does a SLOPPY job at mapping, and because it doesn't use Anti Affine Infinite Plane Bumping or Affine Plane Deflection, it has mis shaped,oblong looking environments.
PS1 also lacked Diffusion and Perspective Correction(Correcting incorrectly drawn Infinite Planes), Diffusion is a method that prevents warping, Saturn utilized Diffusion(Which is simply CPU recalculation of Maps and Environments) , Nintendo 64 used Quad Layering(Reshaping and Changing Map and Environment shapes) and Multi Bending(Bending Layers and shaping them) to prevent Warping, PS1 was incapable of drawing properly shaped maps and environments.
PS1 lacked Multi Threading, The SEGA Saturn and Nintendo 64 were both capable of Multi Threading. Multi Threading is the method of correcting and calculating Geometrics/Rendered Polygons AND the method of combining them with bended and redrawn Sprites.
PS1 had no proper way of Proper Mapping. This was SEGA SATURN's biggest advantage over its competitors. Saturn used Bit Mapping, it used its SH-2 Dual Core 32-bit CPU to Recalculate Layers and Mapped models. As we mentioned, Nintendo 64 didn't handle Bit Mapping, its loophole was Quad Layering. This is why Saturn and N64 games have no screen tearing or polygon clipping.
Another severe drawback of PS1: No Z Buffering. With only 48KBs of Chache on with 12KBs each on 4 Dies it only used Basic Frame Buffering and Low Resolution Filtering, INFERIOR to Saturn's Stunning 512KBs of Chache for Z Buffering and N64's 128KBs Chache of Z Buffering. This is why games like Crash Bandicoot 2, Cool Borders have such a grainy and blurry look.
Now to the BIGGEST problem of the PlayStation 1: Its 2D was a complete and UTTER joke. Complete TRASH. Keep in Mind, that in the Early and Mid 90s, 3D was drawn with the use of 2D wire Frames, and 2D layers, 3D was always used at the time as a Touchup, a "Finisher" feature. 2D was RAM heavy. PS1 only used 1 MB only. Saturn used 4 MBs and could use up to 8 MBs, and N64 used 5 MBs and could use up to 10 MBs.
To utilize proper 2D layers and Frames, Paralax Scrolling,Transparency,Dithering and Reflection are required. These are ALL features Nintendo 64 and EVEN SEGA Saturn could do. PS1 couldn't do either of these.(And NO, PS1 can't do actual Transparency, it did HALF Transparency through low key Illumination).
The ONLY advantage PS1 had over its competitors was how it drew Polygons. It drew larger sized polygons and allowed for more rendered ones to be drawn simultaneously and also used Screen Filters to make their games look better to the naked eye. But that's pretty much it. Without proper 3D layering,mapping and texturing techniques, these capabilities are MOOT.
SEGA Saturn and Nintendo 64 got the last laugh after all, in the Aging department and in History.

Why not buy a PS2 and be able to play every PS1 game plus every PS2 game. (and if you really want to play a PS1 over HDMI than you can do that on an early PS3 model although IMO I think PS1 and PS2 games look better over a component or composite signal than HDMI.)
You could also buy a PS3 and those are all backwards compatible with PS1 games. (Only the earlier models are backwards compatible with PS2.)
I would not recommend anybody waste their money or space on a PS Classic unless you really just love the look of the thing. (That’s the best thing about this device, it looks nice.)
