  • You own a Fanatec Clubsport Shifter and, from time to time, it ruins a race because it mis-shift?
One of these cases happens usually:
Going to the 3rd or 5th gear reports 1st or Reverse.
Going to 4th or 6th gear reports 2nd gear.
In this video I will show why how to fix this, why it happens, how to (mostly) reproduce the problem and why other so called solutions seem to work only for a certain time (or don't work at all).

I am not disputing the fact that your problem was caused because of micro disconnections as you put it but the main problem with these shifters seems to be EMI or static issues caused by bad cables, some are having problems simply because they are connected to a Fanatec wheel base. I have received my new Fanatec shifter yesterday, at first I connected it using the short RJ12 cable to the USB adaptor which was then plugged to a cheap USB extension. After calibrating it I noticed that when in 5th and pushing the shifter to the right it would show 7th so in game going from 4th to 5th the game will register 7th before the 5th gear causing mis shifts. It was then impossible to calibrate, as soon as I start the software the 3rd input was flickering, putting it in first would show reverse and so on. Then I replaced the short RJ12 with the longer one that came in the box to the USB adaptor and plugged it directly eliminating the USB extension and it is working flawless till now.

I added a layer of tape to the connectors, and while it did make them wiggle about less, it did not fix the issue on mine. don't any of my multimeters handy to check if the wiggling actually caused any continuity issues... mine also very rarely goes into 7th instead of 5th or 3rd, so it was not just to the left. So I took off the pcb to add tape behind it since i hadn't yet tried that, and noticed the magnet has been touching the pcb and rubbed off the coating, revealing and touching the copper(i assume ground) layer of the pcb which is not supposed to happen.. added tape to the edges of the pcb to lift the middle, and so far that seems to have fixed it. before it misshifted every few dozen shifts, but after adding tape to the pcb edges to lift it up from the magnet it's been fine for hundreds without a single misshift.

Just to clarify: I added painters tape to BOTH ends of the cable that connectes the horizontal and vertical axis boards. Watching the video may seem that I only added the tape to one end.

The only thing that worked for me was bolting the shifter to the rig with fiberglass bolts + washers, isolating it from the metal of the rig. It was some sort of EM interference messing with the halo effect sensor for the R,1,3,5,7 axis.

I can see that my magnet under the one PCB is slightly off axis....any idea how to adjust the magnet position??
