  • **YOU MUST RE CALIBRATE SHIFTER USING FANATEC PROCESS AFTER THIS FIX**
    • Fanatec CS Shifter V1....
If you have tried re-calibrating your shifter and re-flashing the firmware and still have mis-shifts on your Fanatec V1.5 shifter here is a quick tutorial on how I fixed my fanatec shifter v1.5 (hall effect sensor) when it began to mis shift when selecting 1st, 3rd and 5th gear. 10 minute fix, with standard tools.
**5/2 update** I have not had a single mis shift since adding the electrical tape behind the PCB as per this video so feeling pretty confident this fix is valid. If something changes I will update again.
**9/16 update** my shifter started missing 4th gear so I taped up the other PCB in early June and it has been working for the last 3 months. fingers crossed no more issues but I will continue to update here.

When I started to have this issue and found your video, I was skeptic and didn't
try it out immediately. Only once fanatec said that I would need to ship over
the shifter just for having a cost estimation for repair, I decided to give it
a try. And... it worked like charms! Thank you very much for publishing this video.
The issue is clearly due to lubricant migrating to the small electronic board
causing short circuits. This is a severe design mistake of which fanatec must
be aware of. Asking customers like me to ship over the shifter just to avoid
admitting that they did a mistake is simply scandalous.

Thanks so much! You just fixed the only issue I've had with my setup! I recently stopped using my shifter because the miss shifts became too frequent and very annoying. Ruined so many good races! My magnet was centered btw. Tape fix worked great and I haven't had a single miss shift since!

5 Years later and still this is the only video that helped me with the issue, its simpler than it seems, what I struggled a bit was where to put the non contact tape, as the camera is far out, but with your comments everything was clear. Not being a tech guy I just dove into it, and even I could do it under an hour, taking all the time in the world. A simple less than an hour fix that helped almost 2 years of misshifts

Did the trick, brilliant! Cant believe Fanatec hasn't made the adjustment to their assembly process considering all the folks who've had to return theirs for this problem.

Glad i found this video. I kept getting 2nd gear instead of 4th like a couple times each race. So i gave the tape solution a try and so far no missing shifts after 2 race distances. I ended up putting the tape on the metal instead of the board and make the holes through the tape wit the same allen key i used to unscrew the board. Many thanks !

Can 100% confirm this worked. Had issues with 5th and 3rd gear so added the tape to the board that didn't have any. Fixed that issue. Also had a problem with 1st gear registering as reverse if the shifter was pushed full stop left and up (not pressing down). I removed the other circuit board (the one that already had tape applied) removed the old tape and applied new tape covering the entire board (even the small moon shaped hole at the edge). Fixed. Thank you! You saved me much hastle getting ahold of Fanatec.
Edit: The tape fix did not fix the 1st and reverse issue. It did help in the sense that it takes more force to the left to make it register reverse. Any ideas from anyone? I have contacted Fanatec support so we'll see.
Edit 2: So I figured it out. I needed to adjust that cylindrical magnet to the right of center. This fixed the reverse/1st issue. This was a flaw in the manufacture of the circuit board I'm assuming.

The missed shift fiasco killed me. I was running a close race and in 1st place. It was the 2nd to last lap the shifter would not go into 3rd gear. I was hard on the brakes because a turn was coming. Finally, it goes into gear, I let out the clutch and a CRY!! The damn shifter sent me into a tailspin because it went into, REVERSE!, and not 3rd. There went my fate with a problem shifter and my chance of winning the race.
I will try this because that wasn't the first time it missed shifted. However, it was the 1st time that it had cost me the possibility of winning 1st place. * I weep* As I thank you for posting your findings.

IT WORKS! After having issues with this for months, several blown engines, spins into walls... and a lot of expletives, I finally found this video. I grabbed my tools, followed your directions, and in about 15-20 minutes I had it back together. Now, about 30 test laps later, I'm certain it's working perfectly now. This would have been the THIRD Fanatec product I would have had to RMA. So glad I won't have to go through that process again. BTW, I used needle-nose pliers to carefully remove the small plug so it would be easier to remove the PCB/Hall Sensor. There is some glue, but if you're careful, it easily cracks and releases the plug.

  • @darknewt9959
    @darknewt9959 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Brilliant tip - thank you so much, worked a treat.
On mine the bar in the end of the shaft was clearly rubbing on the back of that hall effect PCB every time I shift, eventually wearing away the insulation baked into the PCB during manufacture and causing a short.
It's a real shame because otherwise, the SQ is a beautifully engineered piece of kit.

Hi! Thank you very much for this workaround! Grazie ancora a 20ld4Forza! ;)

Thanks a lot, I have the previous version (without sequential) and it was constantly mis-shifting.
I did find some grease on the underside of the PCB so I cleaned it and put on electrical tape, tried it for about an hour and not a single wrong gear selection, when I previously couldn't even finish a lap without grenading my engine due to money shifts.
    Thank you very much!

Did work for me, thanks! Had sudden misshifts in the 2,4,6 gears. The sensor for the forward-backward range did already have a tape attached to the back from factory. After applying tape to the left-right sensor it worked immediately.
I was able to disconnect the cable for the sequential mode so i had the topcase with shaft loose from the lower base.
Ordered in jun-2021, shipped in sep-2021, no idea what revision.

Thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU! This man is correct! Worked for me. Bought a pre-owned Fanatec sim and I suspect that the last owner didn’t use it much due to never resolving this MANUFACTURER defect.
All you have to do is unscrew the top four bolts, unplug the wire running to the bottom (optional but highly recommended), take off the two 2.5mm bolts for the RJ12 port and slightly push to the side, unscrew four 2mm bolts of the motherboard that is directly corresponding with the RJ12 port and install electrical tape on BACKSIDE of motherboard. I personally cut the corners off the tape prior to even putting it on to allow free access for the bolts to come back through (no hot stuff near my electronics, no thank you). Everything in reverse to assemble.

Like a previous commenter, I to was a skeptic when I first saw this video about a year ago, to the point I didn't give the video a second thought. Back then my shifter was usable but just a neusence. I recenty started using my shifter again and the problem got progressivly worse to where it was basiclly unusable.
A google search of the problem and your video was the first to show up so I took it as a sign. Within 20 mins I had the problem fixed and I didn't even need to recalibrate my shifter, just plugged it in and it worked first go. Such a simple fix for such a supposedly high-end peice of hardware. Amazing.
It will be interesting to see how long it lasts and of re-taping will again solve the issue. But until then, I'm going to enjoy my shifter again frustration free. Thank you.

This fixed my problem. I had a similar missed-shift issue where third gear would sometimes (1 in 20) register as either first or reverse gear. This obviously screws up any race you happen to be in. This fix took all of ten minutes and I have not had a single missed shift after the fix. Amazing. Fanatec should take note of this and send 2Old4Forza some free gear. He has saved Fanatec so many RMAs and repairs.

Had issues with my shifter from the very first day i set it up. After hours of trying i just tried to work around it in races but it was killing my races. So i got in touch with Fanatec and they wanted me to video the issue, so i did, i recorded game play but they said that was not what they wanted, they wanted me to record me calibrating the shifter, so again, i did what they asked and got zero feed back from them. The cost of the shifter plus the cost of shipping it back, i just left it and never used it. Then i wanted to get back into it, and searched TH-cam, found your video and thought, it cannot be that simple, well, it is. Done the tape, loaded up Assetto Corsa and it has not missed a shift at all. Fanatec should be ashamed, premium product that has a well known fault, you do nothing while a TH-camr fixed your issue with tape. Great video, thank you very much.

@@GayPrideHD the issue re-occured after a while so I did some more digging and found another solution. Apparently the Hall Sensors are sensitive to dust buildup, so I was told to spray down the internals with compressed air. Be careful....I use a can....make sure you get the moisture buildup in the can and straw clear before you spray the air. I've been wondering if a dust boot around the shift shaft might help. This air spraying will be periodic maintenance to be performed on the shifter and always re-calibrate afterwards.

    FIXED!!!!
If the contact with the metal of the hall sensor was making this to fail, I also put electric tape between the screw and the sensor, and as you told us, between the hall sensor and the plate. I try it for about 30 minutes, never failed. I was without any hope, but it worked. I bought this shifter back on sept, after 2 months of use it starts failing. Fanatec sent me a RMA, but I bought this in US and I live outside the US so the shipping was a nightmare, I ask for directions on how to diagnose it under my responsibility, and no answer at all.
    THANKS, A LOT
By the way.. this shifter used to fail almost 10 out of 10 times... so after 30 minutes of working without any problem... this for sure solved it

This worked for me. I didn't burn the tape out, just poked it and basically let the tape act as plumbers tape when you wrap spigot or pipe threads. Been having this issue for a couple months now, getting progressively worse. Did this and guess what? PERFECT. Why on earth fanatec would think one board needs to be insulated with electrical tape and not the other is beyond me. I would've done this as soon as I got it had I known it was a thing!

Definitely gonna try this, i can tell you how many times I’ve had poor finishes from these shifters. I own three, plus i converted my first shifter 1.0v to a 1.5v. ($60 extra from Fanatec) My last race tonight near the end i almost went crazy because the shifter was doing that crazy shifting. Thanks for the info man.

KyleP133 it started messing up again. I have three shifters doing the same thing on 3 different PCs. I am going to test the $15 shifter adapter next. I went from a V2 Servo base to a DD1 base and it seems to be worse.

Hi, Just tried this (and it worked!!!) with a slight variation. The sensor already had some electrical tape on it but it was folder around the side of the board such at that it was stopping the board sitting right up against the 2 small mounting stops. I removed this covering of tape and replaced it with a smaller piece just covering the back of the board where there could be contact between the board and the magnet but ensuring that there was none between the body of the shifter and the board (therefore ensuring the closest fit to the body.
Looking at the position of the magnet and the sensors on the board, I think the position of the board is critical so anything that alters its mounting position could cause and issue.
Thank you for posting, it has solved a very frustrating problem!

  • @Biggus63

Worked for me. I didn't have any electrical tape and used two layers of masking tape. Brilliant. I find paddle shifter cars a bit clinical and boring to drive so this was a major rescue for me.

SO basically the pcb boards in the shifter is partially or completely naked against the metal???

@@Biggus63 thanks. Everything is set and calibrated before my game begins, but once I am in the game driving my shifter skips from nuetral to 2 , and every shift order is up by one shift, at shift 7 it goes to reverse. Weird.

      @Biggus63 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@samuellp1146 No worries mate, I was super happy to get mine fixed. Nothing worse than being in a race and having it shift into reverse when you're looking for third, that ruins everything. Pull it apart, give it a good clean, mask off the mounting area and it should be fixed unless you have another issue unrelated to mine.

That is awesome mate, I was having this issue and it was driving me mad, thanks so much for the video. Before applying your fix I just mapped both 3rd and Reverse to 3rd in the game, mapped 7th to reverse. This also worked but pretty shitty experience, having to apply that type of workaround for a consumer product. Shame Fanatec take 10000 years to respond to support questions, or even that their product requires customers to pull apart and apply electrical tape to fix their garbage design and make it reliable.

  • @EZCarnivore
    @EZCarnivore ปีที่แล้ว +1

I went into my shifter to do this fix, and while I'm not sure the tape really does anything, I did still apply it. However, what I thought was likely the cause for me was several small metal chips that were caught in the grease around the magnet and bearing. Since my shifter would calibrate fine and stay calibrated unless I used it a lot, where it would just randomly go out of calibration, I imagine these little shards of metal were occasionally moving around and interfering with the hall effect sensor. I cleaned all of it up as much as I could, and also applied some hot glue to bridge the gaps next to the sensor board to prevent any more pieces of metal getting into that area. Hopefully this helps some others fix their issues!

This worked for me. Easy 20 min job and I'm not really good with electronics. However, somebody else pointed out there's probably a little emi building up inside. And taking the lid off releases it. But build up starts again after a few months. Hopefully the tape is permanent, we'll see. For now, I'm very happy to play AC - MX5 Cup at Laguna Seca again...no issues so far.

Damn...I just bought a new one because my old V1.5 was doing this. It actually started doing it in the first month after I bought it. They fixed it, it worked for 6 months then started doing it again.
Then Fanatec said it was static on my rig and told me to ground it. I kinda put it away for a few month cause I knew that wasn’t the problem.
Then I brought it back out and tried grounding it and that did nothing. I contacted Fanatec and they said I could send it to them and have it repaired at my own expense..I just bought another one and it works great.
I probably shouldn’t have bought the DD2 from them after that experience. We’ll see.
