Please consider posting a forensics video with as much detail as possible about what caused your problem. My number one question: Was the filter and airbox untouched since new, meaning KTM assembled it at the factory and 25,000 miles later the filter system is essentially failed? I purchased a new 1290 Super Adventure and would like to know if your problem is endemic to a generation of KTMs or specific airboxes. Keep the great videos coming, including the all-important scripture messages.
Generally when riding long distances in dirt and dust you should clean the air filter fairly often. This is why most people ditch the paper filter and use a uni filter as it is washable and reusable. It does require filter oil but it’s far better than paper and exponentially better than sand and dirt in the engine.
I may need to post a video. I will try to show something. But a quick answer to your question. Filter box was stock. But Ktm replaced it at 8k miles because it had a stripped screw. I changed filters often. Hard to understand exactly how dirt got past it. We suspect something wasn’t sealed properly
@@MotoMission. 890 has a known flaw where the two plastic pieces holding the filter will warp. Most people stick a small strip of foam between the top of them and it takes up the slack. I honestly have never heard of it failing this spectacularly though.
And the adventure continues! Great views (especially at the 16:30 mark!). Nice to see Aunie (sp?) continues to provide suppor support to you! Time to move up to big bike (1250GS) riding!

Like loosing a good friend. I'm sure something better will come out of this situation. For me, I prefer a small adventure bike. So I ride a Honda crf 300 rally. Sorry to hear about your 890. If you decide on a middleweight, don't overlook the Suzuki 800DE. It really doesn't get the credit it should. Easy maintenance and so comfortable and capable off-road. The engine is excellent...
KTM seems to struggle with airbox issues especially on their newer models. I use grease on the edge of the filter to get a good seal and have been running the stock paper filters for about 8000 miles now and the airbox is clean. Normally the paper filter does the best job keeping dust out but their weak parts are loading and water. Once they get loaded up they don’t draw as much air as say a foam filter with oil. The nice thing with foam filters is they build a layer of dirt on them that the oil soaks into and it become like another layer of filtration and will keep running longer. Ran paper filters in my Stroms for about 90,000 miles and never had an issue with dust getting by them. But they were a pain to change because you had to undo a bunch of bolts to remove the cover which required you to remove the fuel tank to gain access. I has always skeptical of how the air filter was installed on my 890 - didn’t seem to give you a positive seal around the filter like a bolt on cover would.
On my 790 i always smear a little grease on the sealing surface for the paper element and am also running the twin air pre filter setup and so far it’s been good
Oh man, so sorry to hear this! Makes me want to have a look at mine then. I only have about 6k miles on it, and it's all OEM, so, hopefully there's nothing wrong.
@@MotoMission. Yeah, I'm going to have it looked at and hopefully the original OEM filter did it's job. It's a fallacy that "paper air filters don't work", if they're designed properly they work great. My 14 yr-old RAV4 has 210k miles on OEM air filters and there's never been an issue and it hasn't sucked any dust/dirt and I've driven in some MAJOR duststorms. Maybe it's time though for that Rottweiler performance intake and filter system. Since I'm sure that wasn't the original filter, who changed it last? Maybe it wasn't seated properly? I always grease the sealing surfaces with thick bearing grease. Damn, so sorry to hear that Bro, best of luck either with a new engine or new 890 R!
Brock, I'm curios about what you're going to do with the 890? It might be better to replace the motor. I know a place in Stuart Florida that might have a motor in stock. WMR competition performance. I have no affiliation with them at all (I live in N.Y.). I have been there a few times and a first class act for sure. I know they can without a doubt make the bike like new again. Just a thought. Your videos are exciting so keep up the adventure.
And so it ends. Life and Times of the 890. Baby Head Hill was a bear for me going up. Didn’t see any turn signals on the 450? The Packwood burger place is good.
7 more days for us old people could be too long but not to worry we will tough it out!! Another fun video! The million dollar question will be what did you replace your 890 with? Summer is coming so looking forward,to your adventure’s! Take care!!
So very sorry to hear about your 890. Samething happened to the 2013-2015 1190R's. On my '15 1190R I had to get an aftermarket gasket and rottweiler air filter system to correct the engineering flaw by KTM. They are great bikes, but very finicky. Looking forward to the rest of your adventures.
Sorry to hear about the bike. I’m surprised you weren’t running a foam filter on your bike with all the dusty area riding you do. I use the Aussie Unifilter foam style on my Tuareg. As for bike I say middleweight.
What happened exactly with the filter and the motor? I have a 790 and the air filter concerns me as does other issues these bikes are having. Any recommendations on filter upgrades?
Sorry bout the 890. I do run a filter sock over my 690 filter. It catches a lot of junk! The older I get I prefer small bikes. My next trio is crossing northern SD, into MT and WY on a TW 200.
So was that paper filter just not seated correctly? Damn that really sucks. I just replaced my 790 Adv air box for a Rottweiler pro intake system because I had already seen a little dust in my intake and no way to clean a paper filter.
Brock, I’m loving the vids brother! Been looking at trading my Tiger 1200 on a new 890R but all the worries are holding me back. But I want one! Hope you get it back in one piece. Ride want makes you smile on that particular day. Watching for the adventures, not the bike.
Man hope you get your bike fixed and can continue. If they can't fix the bike my vote is for a Yamaha T-7 as its close to the KTM and bullet proof reliable. From Washington here and sad to tell you that you missed the true baby head hill. It is on Umtanum Ridge, and you have to turn off the paved road at Durr Road just about 5 miles out of Ellensburg to get to it. When you met the guy at the Elk feeding station gate, the baby head hill is on the ridge to your back in between there and Ellensburg. Looks like you may have taken the bypass route. You didn't miss much though as Clemon Mountain is way worse for baby head sized rocks then Umtanium Ridge. Hope you get back this way someday and have the chance to find it next time.
I like the smaller bikes for the more nimble capabilities. I see that 450 has a nice wide seat and I currently have the OEM but need a bigger seat for my bottom to last long rides! How big is that fuel tank and no Zumo on it?
Bummer!! Another 7/890 engine failure story. . . . Sorry to hear it bro. Great to see you charging on with the trail beast! Maybe try the Tuareg or T7 for your next beast?
KTM 890’s have many maintenance issues, stock air filter system is something to be addressed before any miles are ridden. Surprised you made it this far without any other problems?
Hey Brock, opinion only , middle weight adv bike do it all just not well. As solid says looking for the unicorn is real but maybe not easy. I ride a GS trophy 1250 for big miles, and an old xr 400 for getting my dirt on . whatever you chose will be fine! Blessed!!!
@@MotoMission.Yes, it is. It works so slick. It pretty much eliminates stalling. But, as backwards as this sounds, I think they are better suited for experienced riders.
Bummer about the bike...Great video and great riding tips you gave them guys! You were spot on! Thats how to ride for motox. Keep riding Brock! Good times!!
Mid weight if your putting on thousands of miles like these BDRs non stop! Really sad to hear the filter letting you down. I had no idea either until someone recommended I swap to oiled foam filters.
So what did you do with your 890? I am sure you filmed this months ago. You should ride what you want to ride. Did you enjoy the 450 better than the 890?
Ya know. The 450 is a great bike. And I always have more fun in small bikes. Middle weight bikes feel better after days and days of 200 miles each. So they both have their place. The 890 got a funeral.
I thought the new GS engine sounds like someone is using it as a rock crusher, but you actually did it ! Shame about the engine. Dan is the man. Would be cool to see different bikes if you contact the dealers who run demo days, you never know what they've got.
Dan at True North is your new North Star! What a boss for recognizing a worthy rider, like you, to rent a bike and set it up properly. If you were closer I would have loaned you one of my 640 Adventures to complete the WABDR. The outtro reminds me of the Halleluja chorus: forever and ever!
Not been a headache. 24k miles worry free. Excellent bike. Only problem was when I got bad fuel I had to get the gunk out. And somehow had that mud get into engine. If I had a good air filter system I would trust the Ktm 890 Next bike. Coming soon. Keep watching
@@MotoMission. Sad to say, but here in austria, ktm does not have the best reputation with its engines. A lot of complaints about defects and rejected warranties and so on. By the way, I like your channel and your adventures and I think you are criminally underrated. 👋
So sorry brother paper filters can get wet and break apart in wet and dusty conditions what a nightmare. I hope ktm can help you out. Did it come with a paper filter.
@MotoMission. yea that makes no sense. They are adventure bikes and should be able to ride in rain, dust, mud. I noticed my 690 has the rottweiler foam filter with velocity stacks and I can see dirt in the intake this last cleaning. It even has a sock over the filter. Knowing ktm they will blame the customer. I mean how dare ride out bikes on dusty roads smh
Brock, I love your channel and also know that you've been in a new bike for a while. But us, KTM riders need more info in the diagnostics. You brought the 890 to shop in order to resolve the "morning start issues" caused by the bad gas ONLY . You never once said the bike had issues after got it running. NOW , out of the blue, the engine is trashed , because of the air filter. I ride my bikes on dirt roads and clean my air filters every 2 days ... did you? How in this world a BAD ENGINE be running all day with no issues other than BAD START FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. I only have about 45 yrs working on bikes and never heard of it. But definitely, a little more explanation would bring more credibility to the case. Love you guys!
Hey. Yes this is a wild situation. Everything is as you described. Nothing was left out of the story. Cold starts were terrible. It started at the same time I got the bad fuel and had the tank and lines drained a couple times. After that it never started well in mornings. I always keep good fresh air filters. I had just changed this one a day or two before the bikes began acting funny. It ran great all day. But cold starts continued to be a thing. I bought a fuel pump and took to dealership to install. They listened to engine and said that it didn’t sound good. The next day I got the news you saw in video. $11k in parts alone. So I opted to sell the bike for parts. I wish I had better news. Lemme know if you have more questions.
@MotoMission. got it Brock. I understood, the air filter failure was a separate issue from the bad fuel issue. Thanks for the clarification . You are the best, love the content, high quality of videos, and the bible quotes. Cheers
@@MotoMission. I was talking with a KTM service mgr earlier this week asking him about the issues he's seen on the LC8S engines, and he said something about a bike that got sand and dirt in his engine that had an aftermarket filter, which is why I ask. This was at Nash Powersports in Auburn. I wondered if it was your bike after seeing this. I'm sorry about your engine fail. You aren't alone, my Vstrom is in parts ATM, it decided to melt its wiring harness while I was touring around Vancouver Island last weekend. Long U-Haul ride back that's for sure.
@@MotoMission. I think the bigger bikes require more skill off-road. Its not just the ability to pick it up but the ability to navigate difficult terrain. The deep ruts you navigated in your episode today were no big deal on a 450 but on a fully loaded 890 or GS? Lots of decisions would need to be made. Yes the smaller bikes have an easier time in rough ie mud, conditions but thats no fun and as a content creator its boring. Example, section 3-4 of the WYBDR is impossible if wet according to BDR. So s big bike has to make decisions ie drama. A little bike you just drag to the side and wait. The bigger bikes have bigger gas tanks so can go farther and carry more and deeper into the back country. From a rider standpoint its much more of an adventure on a 890 and up bike and from a content creator standpoint your “canvas” would be broader. Loved the drone shots on the cliffs btw. Totally epic
Yeah the location and design of the KTM 790 / 890 Adventure / R air filter system is bad choice. Sucks all the dust spinning around the rear wheel and into snorkel. In general for dusty conditions an oiled foam filter works best. But, you also should consider adding a Rottweiler Performance, Power Plate ( pre filter ) in front of he OEM filer. This ensures clean air going into the OEM filter location. Always make sure your oiled foam filter is moist / tacky. Carry a spare foam filter ( pre oiled ). More on topic on ADV Rider forum. Good luck with bike. Keep us posted.

Oh man, so sorry to hear this! Makes me want to have a look at mine then. I only have about 6k miles on it, and it's all OEM, so, hopefully there's nothing wrong.
If you do dirt I suggest finding a new air filter system.
I’ve been told that there are no motors for sale. Have to piece it together one part at a time.
Bad news.
Thanks for your help tho
And so it ends. Life and Times of the 890. Baby Head Hill was a bear for me going up. Didn’t see any turn signals on the 450? The Packwood burger place is good.
I believe it had signals on forks. But I never used em. Haha
7 more days for us old people could be too long but not to worry we will tough it out!! Another fun video! The million dollar question will be what did you replace your 890 with? Summer is coming so looking forward,to your adventure’s! Take care!!
Haha. Hey buddy.
I will reveal the new bike in the near future.
Yeah. I suspect that may have been my issue
Sorry to hear about the bike. I’m surprised you weren’t running a foam filter on your bike with all the dusty area riding you do. I use the Aussie Unifilter foam style on my Tuareg.
As for bike I say middleweight.
I got bad advice. Love and learn
What happened exactly with the filter and the motor? I have a 790 and the air filter concerns me as does other issues these bikes are having. Any recommendations on filter upgrades?
I’m still researching. I wouldn’t trust a paper filter on a dirt road to do its job. Will be fine for a while. But not for long days on super dust.
Sorry bout the 890. I do run a filter sock over my 690 filter. It catches a lot of junk!
The older I get I prefer small bikes. My next trio is crossing northern SD, into MT and WY on a TW 200.
We should have talked sooner. :)
So was that paper filter just not seated correctly? Damn that really sucks. I just replaced my 790 Adv air box for a Rottweiler pro intake system because I had already seen a little dust in my intake and no way to clean a paper filter.
Hard to know for sure. But I wish I had run foam
Sorry to hear Brock hopefully Dan has better news or help.Still loving your videos
Thanks for watching. Dan is my hero
I’d like to see you riding a mid/heavy bike, purely for selfish reasons! I ride a VStrom, and I could learn a lot by watching you!!
Give me some examples. V storm or…?
@@MotoMission. VStrom, Tenere, Trans Alp, Tiger…..???
Brock, I’m loving the vids brother! Been looking at trading my Tiger 1200 on a new 890R but all the worries are holding me back. But I want one! Hope you get it back in one piece. Ride want makes you smile on that particular day. Watching for the adventures, not the bike.
I think it’s a great bike. Just need the right air filter. 25k miles without an issue for me
Man hope you get your bike fixed and can continue.
Wait what? I missed the actually baby head hill ? How in the world ?
I like the smaller bikes for the more nimble capabilities. I see that 450 has a nice wide seat and I currently have the OEM but need a bigger seat for my bottom to last long rides! How big is that fuel tank and no Zumo on it?
I didn’t have time to mount a gps on it. Had to use my phone. It ruined my phone btw.
Tank size? I don’t remember. But I was fine
A shame about your bike. Glad you were able to continue, the views are amazing!
Thanks. Yeah. The views are fantastic
Bummer!! Another 7/890 engine failure story. . . . Sorry to hear it bro. Great to see you charging on with the trail beast!
Maybe try the Tuareg or T7 for your next beast?
Yeah. Good choices. I will be revealing the new bike in the near future.
That thing sounds like my 94' XR650L that i could have lent you.
I would have taken it. Ha
Sorry about your bike man. Dust/dirt in the engine is our biggest fear with our 890's. Do you have a video where you share about your drone?
I don’t have anything on the drone.
I’m using DJI air 3 on much of this series.
@@MotoMission. thanks!
KTM 890’s have many maintenance issues, stock air filter system is something to be addressed before any miles are ridden. Surprised you made it this far without any other problems?
No problems for 25k miles.
Lesson learned.
Hey Brock,
opinion only , middle weight adv bike do it all just not well.
As solid says looking for the unicorn is real but maybe not easy.
I ride a GS trophy 1250 for big miles, and an old xr 400 for getting my dirt on .
whatever you chose will be fine!
Blessed!!!
Hey Dave. Thanks for the info. I like having multiple bikes also. No unicorns yet
Bummer about the bike. Go get yourself a Tenere700:) love that bike.
Tell me more. You like it huh ?
@MotoMission. I love it. Only had mine a few months, and it is a blast. Planning many camping trips for this summer on it. 🍻
Middle weights!
Tell me what you think. Examples of middle weight. Give me ideas
How did the bike get dirt and mud in the engine? Did it ever get dropped and suck in dirty water? Or they’re saying that’s all through the air filter?
Thru the air filter. I took their word for it. I have never had it under water.
Try an Africa twin with DTC. You'll fall in love!
Is it automatic clutch ?
@@MotoMission.Yes, it is. It works so slick. It pretty much eliminates stalling. But, as backwards as this sounds, I think they are better suited for experienced riders.
Bummer about the bike...Great video and great riding tips you gave them guys! You were spot on! Thats how to ride for motox. Keep riding Brock! Good times!!
Let’s ride !
I’d like to see you ride a scrambler 1200 xe. Not too many people doing content on it!
Test rode one this week. I like your idea.
What a bummer. So how does that happen to your 890? You weren't even riding in a group in a cloud of dust.
Exactly !!! That’s exactly what I was saying.
I would like to see you ride a middle weight bike. I think you would really like it.
How do you define “middle weight bike”. Examples ?
Sorry to hear about your bike, what will you choose next?
I will reveal that in near future.
Sorry about the bike. Check out the Tenere 700. I think you’ll like it.
Hmmmm. Good idea.
Mid weight if your putting on thousands of miles like these BDRs non stop!
Really sad to hear the filter letting you down. I had no idea either until someone recommended I swap to oiled foam filters.
I’m learning.
Yeah I will reveal a new bike in near future
Boy you can tell when the Spirit influences someone's walk and talk. Sorry about the 890. God has something in mind maybe?... Enjoy your videos.
Ahhhhh yeahhh. Haha
Yeah. I had a bag feeling
Damn, explains why the bike was misbehaving so badly.
You knew it. You knew something was bad wrong didn’t ya ?
Dan at True North is your new North Star! What a boss for recognizing a worthy rider, like you, to rent a bike and set it up properly. If you were closer I would have loaned you one of my 640 Adventures to complete the WABDR. The outtro reminds me of the Halleluja chorus: forever and ever!
Yes. Dan is my hero.
I'm curious if you will stick with KTM after this? Seems like that bike has been a headache for you (or maybe I'm wrong).
Not been a headache. 24k miles worry free. Excellent bike. Only problem was when I got bad fuel I had to get the gunk out. And somehow had that mud get into engine. If I had a good air filter system I would trust the Ktm 890
Next bike.
Came with paper. Mechanic at Ktm said to run it. I should have done foam filter. 25k miles of greatness. And then death. :)
Cheers
I ride an 850 GSA so I’d like to see you on a bigger bike.
How big ?
Did they blame the engine failure on your aftermarket air filter by chance?
It was a stock filter.
You actually bypassed baby head hill. What you were calling baby head hill was actually clement hill. Aka little baby head hill.
How did I miss that ?
Please update us on your 890 when you can.
Sold it for parts. So sad. Funeral happing soon. Send flowers
Small to medium bikes. AKA KTM 500 to 890.
Yep. I love em all
890 bike or up
I’m listening
Should have bought a KLR
Classic
I have learned there is no perfect bike. My gs, and 501 get me much adventure..
Yeah. Lots of good bikes. Hard to have one that does it all the best. Those are good choices
@@atticushexcel9567 RW Power Plate is simply a pre-filter to clean air before it goes into OEM or third party primary filter. Thanks.
Oh really ? Yikes
Stupid click bait. channel blocked
Refunds will be given at the end of the video. Keep your receipt.
buy a honda
Which one ? Goldwing?
