    How do you only have 97 followers?! I'm looking into buying a mamiya 645 1000s - but it would be my first step into the medium format world coming from only automatic, point and shoot 35mm cameras. I have been looking all day for videos like this and yours answered all my questions while also teaching me a whole bunch of new information I didn't even know I needed to know. THANK YOU!

    been wanting a mamiya 645 for a while, and for somebody on a budget and/or a massive nerd who loves exploring these types of things with my cameras, really appreciate this! gives you a level of detail about the camera you might not otherwise get. even if i end up getting a different 645 camera, that 220 back tip is following me everywhere. not wasting any film!

    Another tip is that if you want to load up on 120 preloaded cartridges, just buy the cheap 220's and take off the tab (2 screws). Boom, cheap extras that you can have already loaded up ready to go.

    Great video. I remember bring frustrated about not getting that last bit of film for another frame(I personally own a 645pro tl and a 645 afd). A solution to this issue is when loading film, to not completely line the arrow to the holder's arrow. This creates the extra bit of room for an "extra" frame. However, I would recommend not relying on this last frame solution to be absolute. I have done this with both cameras (manual and auto), and this solution primarily to manual users.

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The times that I've used the 120 insert, I've always found that there's ample room for a 16th shot at the end of the negative, the camera just wouldn't let me take it. Not completely lining up the arrow is a good trick though!

    Great vid. So the 220 back is all you need for 16 shots? Do you line up the arrows same as normal when loading?

    This is literally the most useful video of the mamiya on the internet. I do have a question on how much electrical tape I should wound onto my take up spool when I shoot with a 35mm roll for the right amount of spacing. Any suggestions ? Or is that mostly through trial and error ?

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I got there through trial and error. I just changed the amount of tape until the frames got as close as I wanted without overlapping.

      @@thejustintung sorry to bug you but any chance of giving a rough diameter? film is getting so expensive id love to minimise the amount of error in the trial and error steps😅

      Thanks! The strap is actually the OEM one, I just slipped off the pad with the “Mamiya” logo on it.

    I know this is an old video but im just wondering how you go focussing on the instax? Do u need to compensate at all? bit of an insane process (in a beautiful way) and i love that its pretty minimally destructive - instax camera stays intact.

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I didn't do anything different, since I reasoned that the film plane was sitting in the same place due to the modified pressure plate.

    How do u finish a roll of 120 in the 220 holder ? Do u start shooting blanks after the 16th frame until it’s totally rolled up or what is the way to do ?

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I shoot 16 shots on the frame counter, then fire blanks for the rest of the roll!

    Hi. About the tape on the Spool for shooting 35mm, how many mm thick do you think it is??

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I don't have the exact dimension! It's also hard to measure because it's not perfectly round. I just added tape until it was the right thickness.

    I have a 645 Mamiya with 120 and 240 backs. Since digital it hasn't been used.
    Wonder about digital backs and their use.
    Originally the digital backs were so expensive that I stored the camera.
    Any suggestions or comments?

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  ปีที่แล้ว

      This model, the Mamiya 645 1000s, doesn't have interchangeable backs, so (as of right now) you can't use a digital back.

    Do you have a template for the 35mm overlay you have on your finder? Also to shoot horizontally do you hold the camera portrait?

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I unfortunately don't. I believe though the ground glass is 1:1, so I just placed a bit of film strip over a sheet of paper to make mine. Outside of that, it's just a matter of cutting the notches so it sits well under the WLF.

      I just got cheap 3d printed ones off of ebay, you can find them by doing a simple search.

  • @alexaudiovisuals
    @alexaudiovisuals 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To where do you advance when using 120 film in the 220 holder? I feel like when just lining up the arrows the first frame is partly covered by the tape securing the film to the backing

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That may be something to dial in with each filmstock, since different manufacturers have longer or shorter sections of film on the backing paper. I normally do about 1/8th of a turn before the arrows lineup, and that's mostly fine, but I also keep in mind that maybe that first shot won't turn out.

    Does the 645 have an adjustable viewfinder diopter?

    • @thejustintung

      The pop-up magnifier looks like it can be changed out, but I'm not sure about an eye-level finder diopter.

    Not clear on how to load 35mm. The emulsion side is towards the lens?

    • @thejustintung
      @thejustintung  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can load it either way. If you want to load the emulsion side towards the lens, then the photos will be shot normally. If you load with the film base towards the lens, then you can shoot redscale, which is cool too!
