Farewell, New York
มุมมอง 170ปีที่แล้ว
Last time spending holidays with my family in New York, so I thought I'd throw together a little homage. If I had thought this through I would have taken some B-roll, but here ya go lol. All pictures were JPEGS from a Fuji X70 crunched through Capture One Express, and the video was made with Davinci Resolve. The song is Next Life by Pomplamoose ft. J.E. Sunde.
Story Lane "The Tree"

"The Tree" is a performance in the Story Lane series by the Mei/Co dance company. This is the description: "Our work this year seeks to honor two neighbors, Chris and Sharon, who have lost loved ones to cancer. Part of the performance will be in their very front yards as we tell pieces of their stories. Our hope this year is to bring the community together to offer our support and love in recog...
The Secret f/2.8 TLR (Olympus Flex)
มุมมอง 5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A little while ago I found an Olympus Flex A, and it quickly became one of my favorite cameras. I couldn't really find any information about it anywhere, which makes sense given its relative obscurity. After shooting several rolls and carrying it around for a few months, I wanted to make a video to give a short overview of the camera, as well as share some sample images.

I've been on a journey to make my Mamiya 645 1000s a "do it all" camera, and here are solutions to some challenges I've run into. Hope this helps someone, and if you have questions or comments, I'll do my best in the comments. 0:00 220 insert for 120 2:29 35mm with adapters and takeup spool 9:48 Instax Mini

The Octobers
มุมมอง 1595 ปีที่แล้ว
My uncle suffered a stroke in October of 2016. It wasn't until two years later, in October of 2018, that I was able to go back to Taiwan to see him. I've documented some of the time I've been able to spend with him, although I know it's not enough to express how much he means to us. Filmed mostly with a GoPro 5 Session, and some audio by the Zoom H4N.

The audio was all taken on the built in mic on the GoPro Session 5, so I apologize for the low quality. Great vid. So the 220 back is all you need for 16 shots? Do you line up the arrows same as normal when loading?
Awesome!!! This looks like so much fun. I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks for sharing!!!💪💪💪💪
ha, I'm just now realizing how recent this video is. Apparently it only came out a couple days before I first watched it. I'm only just now starting to dive into the world of microcontrollers 'seriously' and trying to use them in actual projects and this one has seemed like a fun one I can try to use and hopefully add my own twist to it. One question I have is where did you find that pointed probe for that price? I don't know if I'm searching the right terms as I can really only find 'flat' headed ones (or the handful of pointed ones that I have found are more expensive). I see that you say most items were bought from AliExpress in the repo, but I couldn't find much in my limited time searching (I've found that sometimes, it just likes to hide the good/relevant stores in the background until after I search for an item a couple of times at least). Really interesting video though, don't want to glaze over that with my question
Hey! Thanks for watching and for your comment. Yes, the pointed ones are a bit harder to find. The link I used was this one: aliexpress dot com [slash] item [slash] 1005006405519347.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.187.49591802Ci2lse&gatewayAdapt=4itemAdapt I got this one in the 100mm length and 3mm diameter. Note that the termination is a different plug than the prongs and screws that the MAX 6675 uses, so I had to disassemble the terminator and connect the wires manually. .
Highlight: the meat and fire pixel art!
I spent soooo long figuring out how to get the pixel array to display corrently haha.
That is awesome and thank you for sharing!!
Very cool!
Thats pretty sweet! Great idea and good implementation!
neat project, thanks for sharing
I love your meat
Have you looked at ESPHome and Homeassistant?
Wonderful video. No BS, just straight information and really well-paced. You deserve a bigger following!
Keyboard looks excellent! Love the purple PCB had been thinking about getting that in that color. Great job!!
I have this camera. I believe it was only ever made for the Japanese market, which is why it's quite rare. Unfortunately mine needs a CLA and I'm too chicken shit to do it myself!

May I ask what your light meter is?
I wore out two Autocords back in the 70's, and still have two of them. Loved the images, but also have always hated the square format. A screen marked with 645 lines helps. People used to say that 6x6 is just a 645 camera that you don't have to rotate for horizontal or vertical. Sure, but I still hate looking at a square image. Images are fabulous, however.
Ahhh, the 220 insert!👍🏼👍🏼
I just acquired an Olympus Flex and was wondering if you know where to get accessories for this beautiful camera? Lense caps, light meters etc... Thank you
Hey Justin, could some of the aftermarket bright screens that are used for rolleis and hasselblads be used here?
I know this is an old video but im just wondering how you go focussing on the instax? Do u need to compensate at all? bit of an insane process (in a beautiful way) and i love that its pretty minimally destructive - instax camera stays intact.
Good question! I didn't do anything different, since I reasoned that the film plane was sitting in the same place due to the modified pressure plate.
legend@@thejustintung I'm looking at getting a 1000s soon and am super keen to steal my gf's instax and give it a go
How do you only have 97 followers?! I'm looking into buying a mamiya 645 1000s - but it would be my first step into the medium format world coming from only automatic, point and shoot 35mm cameras. I have been looking all day for videos like this and yours answered all my questions while also teaching me a whole bunch of new information I didn't even know I needed to know. THANK YOU!
You're welcome and thanks for watching!
Where can i buy that exposure meter ??
beautiful photos and song, really impressive composition.
great video !! amazing images !
Famous trumpeter and bandleader Maynard Ferguson design this horn for Holton Le Blanc Company. This horn is one step better than student models! I have this horn cince 1995 and like the tone all the time!
I have a 645 Mamiya with 120 and 240 backs. Since digital it hasn't been used. Wonder about digital backs and their use. Originally the digital backs were so expensive that I stored the camera. Any suggestions or comments?
This model, the Mamiya 645 1000s, doesn't have interchangeable backs, so (as of right now) you can't use a digital back.
This is literally the most useful video of the mamiya on the internet. I do have a question on how much electrical tape I should wound onto my take up spool when I shoot with a 35mm roll for the right amount of spacing. Any suggestions ? Or is that mostly through trial and error ?
Yeah, I got there through trial and error. I just changed the amount of tape until the frames got as close as I wanted without overlapping.
@@thejustintung sorry to bug you but any chance of giving a rough diameter? film is getting so expensive id love to minimise the amount of error in the trial and error steps😅
Hi. About the tape on the Spool for shooting 35mm, how many mm thick do you think it is??
Sorry I don't have the exact dimension! It's also hard to measure because it's not perfectly round. I just added tape until it was the right thickness.
I also own an Olympus Flex TLR, mine is different from yours. I have shutter button lock mechanism and i dont have a cold shoe mount
Does the 645 have an adjustable viewfinder diopter?
The pop-up magnifier looks like it can be changed out, but I'm not sure about an eye-level finder diopter.
Not clear on how to load 35mm. The emulsion side is towards the lens?
You can load it either way. If you want to load the emulsion side towards the lens, then the photos will be shot normally. If you load with the film base towards the lens, then you can shoot redscale, which is cool too!
It looks beautiful! I think this is the one I'll pick up if I ever want to get a TLR. What lightmeter is that? I haven't seen one that mounts to the shoe before
Thank you Justin, this was so useful
What does the second button on the bottom do? I picked up the "B" variant and I have no idea if the button on mine is broken or not. I thought it may have been a secondary shutter button. Also it takes bay 2 filters but not bay 2 hoods... So it might be a proprietary hood which means the chances of finding one are probably next to zero.
I think the button on the bottom is self timer. I received my FLEXIIB this week ? is it the same as yours ??? what is the ring A/D for ??? Also if your camera is flexBII, could you confirm is bay2 that I need ! Thanks !!
@@AHRMmoxhet yes, bay ii filters. I think a/d is "advance" and "double exposure". I sold mine as I prefer my Rolleiflex cameras.
@@composeexpose8009 are you sure it´s bay II filter ??? i ws told 100% sure it is bay III ???so waht now :) ..About double exposure ; why to put a double exposure button for a camera that has no protection against fouble exposure ??? it´s a non sens ! ???
@@AHRMmoxhet I guess the idea behind it is a reminder if you can advance or there is a frame for double exposure.
What light meter did you use in the video?
It's a light meter called a v201-x, I think there are several places that all sell them.
@@thejustintung Does it meter the light accurately?
@@jerickoescleto Yes it is an excellent reflective meter!
been wanting a mamiya 645 for a while, and for somebody on a budget and/or a massive nerd who loves exploring these types of things with my cameras, really appreciate this! gives you a level of detail about the camera you might not otherwise get. even if i end up getting a different 645 camera, that 220 back tip is following me everywhere. not wasting any film!
Shanghai still makes 220 GP3 film.
Another tip is that if you want to load up on 120 preloaded cartridges, just buy the cheap 220's and take off the tab (2 screws). Boom, cheap extras that you can have already loaded up ready to go.
It’s an interesting fact that it’s a non-Rollei f2.8 TLR, but other than that it has poor functionality (comparable more to the budget Rolleicord than the flex) and It’s absurdly expensive for being a Japanese TLR, for $500 bucks I’ll get a real Rolleiflex, a 2.8C or D.
Thanks for the comment. For that price, I probably wouldn't get it either, but I got it mine for a fraction of that. In terms of poor functionality, It certainly doesn't do as much automatically as a Rolleiflex, but I don't think anything about it could be considered poor. Having handled both, the build quality definitely holds its own.
I’m dumbfounded that I only just found out Olympus made TLR’s. It’s beautiful!
Excellent overview
To where do you advance when using 120 film in the 220 holder? I feel like when just lining up the arrows the first frame is partly covered by the tape securing the film to the backing
That may be something to dial in with each filmstock, since different manufacturers have longer or shorter sections of film on the backing paper. I normally do about 1/8th of a turn before the arrows lineup, and that's mostly fine, but I also keep in mind that maybe that first shot won't turn out.
Great video. I remember bring frustrated about not getting that last bit of film for another frame(I personally own a 645pro tl and a 645 afd). A solution to this issue is when loading film, to not completely line the arrow to the holder's arrow. This creates the extra bit of room for an "extra" frame. However, I would recommend not relying on this last frame solution to be absolute. I have done this with both cameras (manual and auto), and this solution primarily to manual users.
The times that I've used the 120 insert, I've always found that there's ample room for a 16th shot at the end of the negative, the camera just wouldn't let me take it. Not completely lining up the arrow is a good trick though!
That is a great-looking camera. I have a couple of Mamiya TLRs and a Yashica. You mentioned that accessories, including the leather replacement, are hard to find. I have a number of Mamiya M645s and I have paid up to $30 for a leather replacement kit. I have a few more that I am working on now. I took measurements on the M645 items to include the prisms and I am making templates to 3d print them and cut my material to repair or replace all of the leather on these cameras. What is so nice about this is I can do that for just about any camera if I have the measurements to go by. It takes a little time, but it is worth it. The replacement material is normally used for patching holes on chairs or sofas.
Do u have a video on how to loud up the 35mm film???? I also want to ask of I can buy the peace that you made to put on the view finder to guide you the area that be cover with the 35mm film
