Watching him play with that giddy fervour at 1:48 - 1:54 gives me goosebumps every time. If you ever wondered exactly who THE man is, I think it's Billy Joel.
This video should have at least 100 million views. What is going on? BJ is the GOAT! No one comes close to his music catalog and longevity. Just about everyone of his songs is enjoyable to listen to multiple times. They just don't get old and stay fresh after almost 50 years in some cases! This man is simply undervalued, under recognized and under viewed. The millennials and gen z generations have not opened up or even discovered BJ perhaps because he didn't sell out to ads and marketing taking advantage of his celebrity status to sell some schlocky items. Please get this video and others out to people, especially those younger ones who unfortunately have such lousy music to listen to these days. Come on now, just go and see the top songs on TH-cam music or Spotify, most of it is plain garbage that can't even be called music and we know most was not written by the so called artist.
I never understood what the big deal with Billy Joel was.....Bald ,old man wasn't too attractive to me even though I'm a man. I knew only Uptown Girl and I preferred West life's version. It was about 2-3 years ago that while watching the show 'The Boys' , I came to learn more about him and even still I wasn't that drawn into him other than the song "You're only Human" . Then, I started listening to him more and he's now my favourite pianist-singer. I think lots of his songs are a bit too American that I can't relate to but I like the theme of them...take Allentown for example.
One of the best songs in the 70's. Thank you Billy Joel for making the dreadful drive to high school in my dad's pickup truck a delight when this song and others on this album blasted forth from the 8 track through the ancient speakers.
I heard somewhere that Billy will probably never play this again due to his bandmates making stupid faces and he can’t help but crack up during the whistling parts.
That was an amazing performance. 250 concerts a year. Yikes. He even did this one with a broken left thumb. I was actually at that NY concert. It was all amazing. Nothing like live concerts hands down. Sure beats any of the garbage today. But there is new talent even now. We will see. Hope someone can step up to the plate.
this song gives me chills every time. when i was about 9 or 10 years old, i had just discovered billy joel. I saw a CD in the mall with the stranger on it, and asked my grandpa to buy it for me. the following day, we went on our annual vacation to wildwood, NJ (we still do this to this day) and i played the CD the entire ride. I knew the biggest hits like movin out and just the way you are. my grandpa introduced me to “Scenes from an italian restaurant” as well as this masterpiece. I am 15 now and i still absolutely love this song and will forever associate it with the amazing times i had on vacation with my grandpa.
Many years ago, having grown up with most of the produce of Billy's middle career years (Nylon Curtain, Innocent Man) playing in the background, I came to discover his early stuff thanks to the first Greatest Hits album. In the face of a personal heartbreak, "The Stranger" somehow spoke to me. I think I would have been without hope if not for this song. The Stranger by Billy Joel literally saved my life.
The Rock 'n Roll era was full of shining stars, Billy Joel was a supernova. I really appreciate a good whistler. Today's music is a hollow shell compared to this.
I remember the first time I heard this song. It was late 1991. I had bought the Billy Joel: The Ultimate Collection box set. I was listening to the Greatest Hits: Vols One and Two for the first time. When I first heard The Stranger, I heard the whistle at the beginning, followed by the guitar. I thought it was great.
Well we all have a face That we hide away forever And we take them out And show ourselves When everyone has gone Some are satin some are steel Some are silk and some are leather They're the faces of the stranger But we love to try them on Well we all fall in love But we disregard the danger Though we share so many secrets There are some we never tell Why were you so surprised That you never saw the stranger? Did you ever let your lover see The stranger in yourself? Don't be afraid to try again Everyone goes south Every now and then Ooh, Ooh You've done it, why can't someone else? You should know by now You've been there yourself Once I used to believe I was such a great romancer Then I came home to a woman That I could not recognize When I pressed her for a reason She refused to even answer It was then I felt the stranger Kick me right between the eyes Well we all fall in love But we disregard the danger Though we share so many secrets There are some we never tell Why were you so surprised That you never saw the stranger? Did you ever let your lover see The stranger in yourself? Don't be afraid to try again Everyone goes south Every now and then Ooh, ooh You've done it, why can't someone else? You should know by now You've been there yourself You may never understand How the stranger is inspired But he isn't always evil And he is not always wrong Though you drown in good intentions You will never quench the fire You'll give in to your desire When the stranger comes along Ooh, Ooh Ooh, Ooh (copied and pasted from another YT vid of this song)
It's New York State Law, if you're a resident of Nassau or Suffolk Counties you are required to love Billy Joel. And I gladly comply with such regulations
Haven't heard this in years. I played 3x in a row. Hit the subscribe button too. He is such an AMAZING song writer. TONS of great lyrics&music. Update: 6x in a row. Update #2 @ Work today I COULD NOT get it out of my head for 6!! Hours. I had to play "guess the song" lyrics games with coworkers for the Stranger to temporarily vanish. So here we go again... Lol
Very noice! Always been a fan of this concert. If only the VHS hadn't cut 8-or so songs out of the set - similar to how Live at Shea cut out 10 songs 😞 - But he's Billy Joel and Billy Joel is Billy Joel and can just do what Billy Joel does 😁
The bass line in this song is just incredible.
Show me a BJ song where the bass line is not just incredible.
Bro it's like 1 note every measure
@@jamiepasquariello2652 It really isn’t tho
One of the most critically underrated artists of all time. Ya know, despite selling over 200 million albums....
Watching him play with that giddy fervour at 1:48 - 1:54 gives me goosebumps every time. If you ever wondered exactly who THE man is, I think it's Billy Joel.
Whoa! So cool!!
Exactly.
"man"
What’s crazy is he just hammers the keys like a drummer and never plays any clams.
It’s mind boggling actually.
It is a most enjoyable way of telling a sad truth of life. That's why Billy Joel is a legend.
He is undoubtedly the most intelligent artist.... His music makes sense even after 45+ years!

im 22 and bj is definitely one of my favs
He is god but not the goat. Elton john, the Beatles, Elvis and few others have a best catalog.
One of the best songs in the 70's. Thank you Billy Joel for making the dreadful drive to high school in my dad's pickup truck a delight when this song and others on this album blasted forth from the 8 track through the ancient speakers.
He’s playing that piano like a boxer in a title fight.
Perfection.
Man the band was rockin here. And Billy with the youthful vocals and the piano playing. Can't get enough.
トライアングルがこんなに素敵な楽器だとは思わなんだ😮
I highly recommend the entire album
Goin crazy on that triangle
All I want for Christmas is to see Billy Joel sing this live
I heard somewhere that Billy will probably never play this again due to his bandmates making stupid faces and he can’t help but crack up during the whistling parts.
@@brendanlynch4628 I saw that too. Hate the band for that. Great musicians however. Thanks for replying.
@@brendanlynch4628 he still plays it from time to time
Love this tune, Especially the whistling parts.
My Man KILLIN' it on that triangle!
This is such a great song. I gather he played it in Japan just recently, but for the life of me, I don't know why he doesn't play it live more often!
He's a fucking genius
You may never understand
How the stranger is inspired
But he isn't always evil
And he is not always wrong ❤
@@BillyJoel-mv1qf I will go out on a limb here and suggest that the real Billy Joel knows the difference between been and being. 🙂

Damn, had no idea he played with a broken thumb, you can see it in the way he plays in this performace but aside from that the sound is perfect

Billy is THEE Man. Such incredible talent; a living musical legend.

Great song - his lyrics always seem to be inspired by his own observations on life. And I love the contrasting intro and ending!
Fly on the wall writing at its finest I’m so nerdy for it!
Il più completo songwriter di tutti i tempi .... Da giovane poi era fenomenale .... Talento musicale smisurato
2:05- 2:25 is heartbreakingly beautiful. One of my favorites.

The triagle man is killing it
This is just stunningly good. I mean wow. Truly one of the best ever. Absolutely amazing.
I love me some Billy Joel..all day and all night!!💃😘🎤

The whistling so innovative!
Well we all have a face

Everyone goes south
Every now and then
Ooh, Ooh

You should know by now
You've been there yourself
Once I used to believe
I was such a great romancer
Then I came home to a woman
That I could not recognize
When I pressed her for a reason
She refused to even answer
It was then I felt the stranger
Kick me right between the eyes
Well we all fall in love
But we disregard the danger
Though we share so many secrets
There are some we never tell
Why were you so surprised
That you never saw the stranger?
Did you ever let your lover see
The stranger in yourself?
Don't be afraid to try again
