I used to play many of Billie's songs on the piano. But, no matter how many hours I practiced, I could never play the intro to this tune note for note. There's good, as I was....then there's virtuosity, as was Billie. Phenomenal talent.

That intro is quite simply amazing. His hands are a blur and it looks like he's just frantically banging away at random keys, but the melody and accompanying chords are clear as day and delivered with superhuman precision.

I don’t think so. I remember an tv interview with the Austrian broadcast while BJ was in Vienna to take lessons with some classical Piano players, maybe 10-15 years ago (B. Joel’s father lived in Austria). He said at least something like that highly trained classical players are another class (not: better) of players. And i think that he’s uniqueness lies not in the piano playing but rather in the genius combination of playing, writing/compose melodies which are like a brand sign plus highly poetic lyrics. You can find maybe a little more people in the world who are really good in one of those „things“, but people who are so far up in all of those things like Mr. Joel...? I don’t think so. Just my little opinion.

My brother and I were in the front row and actually sat on the stage stairs chatting with one of the roadies. What a wonderful memory. Of course, Joel was fantastic. What a talent! There is no “best ever,” just a pantheon of the best. Within that, it’s a matter of personal preference. Billy Joel is definitely in it. So are Paul Simon, Stephen Sondheim, Bob Dylan, and probably a few others. If you include duos, King & Goffin and Rodgers & Hammerstein would be there as well.

Love most of Turnstiles but favorite track is easily Summer, Highland Falls. There was a year of my life I listened to that song every day.

I agree, the piano riff in that song is just so damn beautiful!! Definitely one of Joels best works.

Listen to the musical content in this. Released by a "pop" artist. My all time favourite will always be Billy. Nothing touches him. What passes as "music" today is usually just three words repeated over and over in autotune.
