Billy Joel’s top five favorite Billy Joel Songs. 5. Vienna 4. And So It Goes 3. You May Be Right 2. She’s Always Right On Time 1. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant
I proposed to my wife in 1993 at karaoke, cementing Just the Way You Are as another of “Our Songs. I had to take a bus to Tower Records for a cassette tape of the karaoke version, because Billy Joel selections were not generally available for karaoke. I walked through the audience as I sang, got on one knee and proposed during the musical break. She actually said yes, and we were married three days later. We’ll celebrate our 29th anniversary in a few months. Beautiful song. Also, if I had a favorite, it would definitely be Close to the Borderline. Man does that song hit home.
Nobody writes lyrics from everyday phrases like Billy Joel - that also convey the era so perfectly. “They got an apartment with deep pile carpet and a couple of paintings from Sears.”
“ I thought I had my say “ What an eloquent man. Understand his legacy and doesn’t want to saturate his legendary discography with music not genuine. In a time where popular artists pump out mediocre albums left and right for profit and boredom, I respect this immensely.
Elton & Billy actually gave each other hard time about that back in 2018. Billy was quoted as saying Elton is “dragging down” his legacy by releasing so many new albums. Elton’s response was “Well actually, he (Billy) hasn’t made anything since 1993 because he can’t. 😂 I love releasing new music, it doesn’t sell but that’s the point - it’s like telling a painter not to paint,” Elton said. He’s just lazy, yeah, I love him to death but he’s lazy.” Ouch! I think they’re both right though. Billy should make a couple more and Elton should probably do less because his last several albums have been mediocre at best.

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant it's definitely the best Billy Joel song ever! I love so many of his songs. He is really one of the best! I love you Billy Joel. 💕
My mom introduced me to Billy Joel's music in 2006. On the Way home she was always listening Billy Joel in the car. 2 songs which were mandatory to listen to, were "the lunatic" and "scenes from an italian restaurant". In 2016 she bought 2 tickets for the only show billy played in germany, in Frankfurth, 3rd row... actually it did not matter because the people went crazy and everything center was first row at one point. When she passed away last year we played "I go to extremes" at her funeral. I'm really greatful for the relationship i built up to my mom, especially through the musical connection she built via Billy Joel's music.
This is interesting to hear him talk about his songs. I briefly met Billy Joel in Iowa City, Iowa following his concert around 1987 or so, as his band was staying at the same hotel as I was. I had attended his concert that evening and he was now back in the hotel bar mingling with people, along with his drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and his saxophonist, Mark Rivera. I asked Billy at that time what his favorite song was of those he sang. His comment at that time was, “My songs are my children. I like them all the same.”
Saw him last night. He mentioned this interview and clarified that his favorite songs are always changing, then proceeded to play Vienna. He was incredible
The prelude into angry young man will always hold a place in my heart. Just the sheer songwriting and piano ability displayed there is incredible, and it always even gets my heart going in a way, like I hold my breath because I'm just in awe of how incredible it sounds. I'm terrible at describing the feeling, but I also get it with one of Walk the Moon's songs, "Work this Body." It has an amazing crescendo moment and then goes right back into it and I have listened to it so many times at this point.
Uptown Girl and the Longest Time was 1&2 for me but after the birth of my own daughter Lullabye resonates so much within me that it went from 3 to 1 for me
@Michel Plaxton My father passed away from Covid in May. He was a huge Billy Joel fan, and had so many stories about all the times he’d seen them. We decided that we needed to honor them with a Billy song at his funeral, so Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) was what we chose. It was perfect, and really a highlight to his service. I love it so, and now it has an even more special spot in my heart!
It's really hard to pick only 5 favorite Billy Joel songs, but here goes: 1. Streetlife Serenader 2. Summer, Highland Falls 3. Pressure 4. Honesty 5. And So It Goes
summyb been my favorite since I discovered the song 25 years ago in college. Always had a special place in my heart that song. Last year unplanned, I ended up in Vienna for 4 months. Call it Law of Attraction, the Universe, whatever... but that was powerful synchronicity to have ended up there so spontaneously. There’s a clip I discovered on iTunes about Vienna where he talked about the genesis of the song, what was behind the meaning. So great to get that inside info from the songwriter himself.
Scenes of an Italian Restaurant is one of my favorite songs, and I’m even learning how to play it on the piano! I just got to the part where we start to learn about Brenda and Eddie
I remember taking a taxi in Gumi, South Korea when "Uptown Girl" came on the radio. The taxi driver, like many Koreans, was a fan of the song and asked me, "What 'Uptown'?" Using my limited Korean, I attempted to translate, "um... buja dongnae" (rich neighborhood). The taxi driver pointed out the window to the ritzy area near Gumi City Hall where there are a lot of high class restaurants, pubs, expensive apartments, fancy cars and where civil servants go to eat and chit chat... "This... 'Uptown'". He was correct. Thank you, Billy Joel for writing so many songs loved by people around the world, as well as an opportunity for an impromptu mini- English lesson.
Me too. What a talent and what a showman! Never will forget him playing that piano like Wow! Then standing up and kicking the piano bench across the stage and sliding on his knees across the stage, singing all the while without missing a beat!

I've seen so many concerts but to this day the most memorable of all (to my surprise) was Billy Joel at The New Haven Coliseum (10/25/1986). I remember ever minute of that concert. So wish I could see him next month at Madison Square Garden. He's got talent, charisma, humor, soul and more. He cares about his audience -- what a night. We were all on our feet dancing the whole night. Stay well Billy, we need you.
'I thought I had my say..."That's the response of an intelligent, experienced artist. Some of these older ones can't let go and wanna go to war with artists half they age.*cough*Mariah *cough cough*
It's nice that he's not putting out new material without the inspiration but keep in mind he's touring as a greatest hits package. And while that makes fans happy, let's not anoint him for it. Saw him at The Spectrum in '77 and that did it for me. He would never be better in my eyes (or for my ears).
And some continue to write good stuff and get nominated for awards right alongside "new" artists (Sting, ahem). James Taylor and Paul Simon and Jackson Brown still write good music too. Mariah is not in her 50s even, let alone her 60s. She is not Billy's contemporary.

Syrius XM used to have a Billy Joel station where he introduced each song and told a little history behind it. I was upset when they discontinued that station. It was phenomenal.
The first date I had with the woman who would become my wife was at a Billy Joel concert in Raleigh, NC, in March 1979. His show was electric and he brought down the house with “Only the Good Die Young” as his encore performance. We couldn’t stop clapping and cheering. What a talent, what a treasure!
First seen Billy play when he was the opening act for the Doobie Brothers. Some of the fans were hardcore Doobie fans. They constantly were yelling Dobbies and gave Billy no chance to get going. You could understand why he was really annoyed with this. He stopped and said I've been paid so if you don't want to hear me the Dobbies will not be out till their scheduled time . I can leave and you can look at an empty stage till Dobbies. Once the loudmouths shut up he blew everyone away. Been a life long fan and it was one hell a concert in the end.
That's cool! Can't imagine Billy opening for the Doobs!!!! But then in high school we had some long forgotten British group perform at our Homecoming and the opening act was The Who!!! They had just released the Tommy opera and they sang the whole thing! They were booked a year previously.
Great story, thanks for sharing. I saw Billy at Petco Part recently and he sure is one cool guy and I can definitely see him saying that. Love the Doobies too!
I had the chance to see Billy in his so called "last concert" in Latin America. It was a dream come true. When the time came to pick between Vienna and Just The Way you are, the crow was so loud with both them that he decided to both. What a legend 🤙🏼
+The GOAT well... Kanye west is human, and he's the exact opposite of what we're talking about. He's belligerent, pompous and self-righteous. I can't take an artist seriously when they pride themselves on being a genius, whether they actually are or not.
I did a job at the Old Trafford stadium, back in 2018, for Billy Joel's concert. He was incredible and I was happy to have been working right at the front. I loved every minute of it!
I had the pleasure of meeting Billy Joel, three different occasions when I was traveling, as a matter of fact, one night in the Marina del Rey Ritz, Carlton, Billy played for my boss and his wife and I they were visiting from Italy, speaking Italian with Billy. And I ran into him twice in Phoenix, Arizona of all places he remembered me we had a nice chat they don't make them like him anymore! Love you You're the best you and Neil Young are the real deal. of I have to say 52nd St., probably my favorite album of Billys
Danial Shafri I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he hates Piano Man. At this point, if you've heard of Billy Joel, you've heard of Piano Man. You don't really have to be familiar with the rest of Billy Joel's works in order to suggest it. He also did say that he prefers his album songs to his hit singles.
+Kc Flows I'm not sure "hate" is the right word, but he's certainly grown weary of that song. It's definitely not surprising that he wouldn't put it in his top 5. To put it in his exact words, he's "constantly surprised at the success of that song." But I think there's also a certain sense of wonder that goes along with that success, no matter how sick he might be of having to play it. After all it's a major part of his legacy and has stood the test of time. My mom is a piano teacher and has a 9 year-old student playing it, and it's what, like 45 years old? But yeah, it's similar to the way Kurt Cobain felt about "smells like teen spirit" (though kurt's feelings often came out in a more fiery way). He never would have predicted the kind of crazy success it would have and felt it was far from his best work.
I've said for decades that Billy is one of the top five BEST Songwriters on the planet. Being from N.Y. he spells out every vision, in lyrics, that his eyes & mind want to capture. And his melodies set the settings for every word being sung. His songs are so well crafted that few other singers can cover them near as well as Billy can. Then, when he brings all this, coupled with his excellent, entering, exuberance, to the stage ... Wow! He was gifted many times over, and it shows he knows it by backing away as he did, so we are just as pleased to be recipients of his well balanced talents. I've often been told I resemble his looks but I honestly wish I had a mere fraction of his songwriting gifts instead. May He keep doing it and keep it rolling. His repertoire is full enough. Every mood, Every story, every tell is told with perfection. My other four are : Paul Simon, Sting, Mr. Zimmerman and (maybe) Elton.
Between my dad and my sister, I've been listening to Billy Joel as long as I can remember, but "And So It Goes" is one I didn't appreciate until I was in my '20s. It's such a beautifully simple song, almost a hymn. I still don't know how you can write lyrics like those, that lay down your feelings so bare and still remain composed while you perform.
Vienna has such a dear place in my heart...

Scene from an Italian restaurant… just SUPERB… no other word
Wow, Billy is a great impersonator
Dare him to do his friend Sting!!!
i think having a good ear helps
I think “Vienna” is his favorite since it was the first song he thought of and had to think a bit longer to name the other ones.
i agree but he has said in the past how much he loves that song too
R B it’s my favorite song of his, I was happy that he had a big meaning of it as well

Best part is that he can still sing just as well as when he was in his 20s. Absolute legend.
Right?? I watched the Paul McCartney "Carpool Karoke" and lets be honest.....his voice is not that good anymore. But Billy only improves with age.
Nope. He's way past his prime, sadly.
He sounds better than ever nowadays.
I saw him live in the 90s and he had a backup singer do the high notes in An Innocent Man, because he couldn't hit them anymore.
@@jbrisby BS he can still hit high notes... th-cam.com/video/qd_VX4cyvLs/w-d-xo.html
We’ll
celebrate our 29th anniversary in a few months.
Beautiful song. Also, if I had a favorite, it would definitely be Close to the Borderline. Man does that song hit home.
Beautiful story! But I will say it was pretty obvious she said yes cause you started off calling her your wife 😜
Three DAYS!? You guys were not fooling around. I‘m loving it and am very happy for you.
Damn, I forgot about that tune, that is a GREAT song 😉
Nobody writes lyrics from everyday phrases like Billy Joel - that also convey the era so perfectly. “They got an apartment with deep pile carpet and a couple of paintings from Sears.”
“ I thought I had my say “
What an eloquent man. Understand his legacy and doesn’t want to saturate his legendary discography with music not genuine. In a time where popular artists pump out mediocre albums left and right for profit and boredom, I respect this immensely.
12 albums is a lot. Then of course there’s his channel when it is on SiriusXM !!!
Billy should make a couple more and Elton should probably do less because his last several albums have been mediocre at best.
the self awareness to retire before people start talking about your retirement is amazing
Such a perfect response to Colbert
"The Downeaster 'Alexa'" "There ain't no Island left for Islanders like me"

Just saw him in Auckland NZ. Hit after hit and he can still sing really well. Crowd of 40,000 sang every word. Great night. Thank you Billy

My wife's favorite song
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant it's definitely the best Billy Joel song ever! I love so many of his songs. He is really one of the best! I love you Billy Joel. 💕
This one is my absolute favourite, however he has so many. I also love Captain Jack.
It’s Frankfurt ;)
I’d 100000% watch Pianoman and Rocketman fight Tambourineman
That was very funny!

I was there, too!!

He's right. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is his best song.
NOBODY wrote lyrics like the great Billy Joel! Such a talent!
I couldn’t name the top 5 because every Billy Joel song would make the list.

No Matter how old Billy Joel is, Vienna ALWAYS goes with his voice
Scenes from an Italian restaurant is definitely his greatest ever song. Can't wait to hear him perform it live again in 2024 in Cardiff, Wales

Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) is climbing to the top of my list...
Uptown Girl and the Longest Time was 1&2 for me but after the birth of my own daughter Lullabye resonates so much within me that it went from 3 to 1 for me
Michel Plaxton Wholeheartedly agree that it should’ve been easily in the top 3!
Lullabye is just gorgeous.

4. Honesty

Julie Marks Great history!!

What are the four
Nina Blaze What about David Bowie?
+Dylan Murphy She was talking about intelligent, experienced artists, not gods.
dov linhos Fair enough.
And some continue to write good stuff and get nominated for awards right alongside "new" artists (Sting, ahem). James Taylor and Paul Simon and Jackson Brown still write good music too. Mariah is not in her 50s even, let alone her 60s. She is not Billy's contemporary.

Dude, he could have a whole new show doing impressions and telling stories.
Syrius XM used to have a Billy Joel station where he introduced each song and told a little history behind it. I was upset when they discontinued that station. It was phenomenal.
They didn’t discontinue it it’s just a limited run station
It’s back now!
Billy's just a regular, funny, genuine kind of guy. I love that he put scenes from an Italian restaurant as #1.
No one mentioned Captain Jack, LOL.

Wow, just wow.
Great story, thanks for sharing. I saw Billy at Petco Part recently and he sure is one cool guy and I can definitely see him saying that. Love the Doobies too!
I had the chance to see Billy in his so called "last concert" in Latin America. It was a dream come true. When the time came to pick between Vienna and Just The Way you are, the crow was so loud with both them that he decided to both.

wonderful how he can laugh and ridicule himself. Billy doesn't take himself too seriously, that's great!
The GOAT yeah, and that's not the rule but the exception with most super duper awesome artists
+The GOAT well... Kanye west is human, and he's the exact opposite of what we're talking about. He's belligerent, pompous and self-righteous. I can't take an artist seriously when they pride themselves on being a genius, whether they actually are or not.
"that's great"?

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is a Masterpiece like Bohemian Rhapsody and Funeral for a Friend
Billy Joel at Joe Louis Arena in 1984 was the first concert I ever went to see. It was such a great show.
Billy Joel is underappreciated by many people, but he is truly one of the great musical talents of the last half century
He's really not. That's why he sells out shows. Not everyone is underappreciated.
I bet many people expected to hear Piano Man in that list. But all amazing songs.
I was surprised here Scenes from Italian Restaurant, but I guess its longer so not really hit single.
Danial Shafri he says in his song last words that he hates the songs he has to play that refers to piano man
I did
+Kc Flows I'm not sure "hate" is the right word, but he's certainly grown weary of that song.
My Life. 🔥 Favorite album: 52nd Street.
I feel pretty unworthy commenting about such an Icon, but Billy thanks, for all the incredible songs. You make life better.
