I hope it’s reflective of his personal life, because he’s had an up and down one , it seems. It seems like pain and artistry go together with some. But the result is meaningful to the audience.
He had only recently got the job as the newest band member at the time of this tour, which might explain his enthusiasm and he had not even played on any Billy Joel recordings yet. And now he is the longest serving member in Billy's current band.

Scott R I’m 20, studying music, and have worked my ASS off since I was five to get where I am. The best concerts I have ever seen are the ones like this, where it’s just good, live music and great musicians. There’s nothing wrong with the new way of performing concerts. But I’m my opinion, 90% of the time it’s just a cover for the fact that the artists can’t sing it as well live as the studio recording. There are some very good live singers, like Bruno Mars, Ariana, Gaga, Beyoncé, etc, and even they have to put on a ridiculously overproduced show because apparently just music itself doesn’t cut it anymore. So, Mr “Ok boomer,” maybe try keeping the insults to yourself next time. Thanks.
So, what we have here is a true American Master. Billy writes his superb music, plays excellent piano, has a strong lead voice and surrounds himself with wonderful musicians. In other words, Billy Joel is the complete package. And, everything he does is at a very high level. Billy is up there with people like Paul McCartney and a few others. Unlike lesser performers, Billy understands music theory, and uses complex chord and melody structures. This leads to his songs having a unique feeling and sound, unlike some (Elton John comes to mind) where after a while, everything starts to sound the same. I grew up in Bethpage, Long Island, near Hicksville where Billy grew up. As a musician (my band was "Russ & the Vibrations) I was aware of who Billy was and that he was really good. It was gratifying to see someone become wildly successful because of their talent and hard work, as opposed to making it because of who you know. Billy is the real deal, and he has remained down to earth in spite of his success. He deserves his success and hopefully can share his gifts with the rest of us for many years to come. One word to sum up my feelings---------BRAVO Billy.
Elton John and Billy Joel are on the same boat. Great songs. Great performers. The Beatles are not bad either. It's not a question of technique. Music theory often gets in the way of pure inspiration. I don't like Billy Joel for his skills as an instrumentist. I like the attitude and the world he is creating. The top musicians cannot write an interesting song. Legendary songwriters are pure amateurs.
Russ - you are 100% right. What fabulous talent! It reminds me of my days in Paris and Brussels in the 1970s, and now it brings tears to my eyes since it is so evocative. Few of us are endowed with such a gift. Alex
Keep in mind that Billy Joel is playing through intense pain. That's why his fingers are taped and he is shaking his hands every now and then. This was after that motorcycle accident that injured his hands. Playing through pain AND having the time of his life!! 🎵🎶🎭🎵🎶
"Shine On, You Crazy Diamond", is 1975, although, the late Syd Barrett was not Bohemian, nor was he a Homosexual. He might have worn tasteful, form fitting Women's Clothing and asked his Pink Floyd brethren to "Break" some "Free" Bread, at an Italian Restaurant. Who the hell, has not.

The first time I saw Billy in the late 70's in St. Louis. I expected a guy, a piano, a cigarette smoking on the piano next to a cocktail glass: An intimate evening with a piano crooner with an almost invisible backing band. Holy Shit could those guys rock! Billy was all over the stage, jumping on and off the piano, Liberty was smashing the drums, Richie Cannota was a sax god! The energy on stage, the complexity of the music, Billy's voice from sweet to growl, in his prime. Amazing. Just amazing.

I met Billy Joel in person when he played a free concert at my University. He was so lovely. I found out he went to Bklyn College the year before my big Sister. @@wendymartin8619 just saw him in Charlotte NC last month, 8th row. My ears are still ringing. Amazing concert. I hope you enjoy it! He is a master at his craft.
I played in a band in and after high school. Often the crowd is so pumped and connected that their energy bleeds off into you as a performer. You feel an intense rush and finish in clothes soaked with sweat. And it's one glorious thing to experience. We played a lot of gigs for free. The crowd payback was more than enough. Those sweet romantic teenage nights.
I love watching concert footage of an artist when they are at the absolute peak of their powers and popularity. Like, the biggest they will ever be. This is that concert for Billy.
It is a treasured song. I have a very old friend who loves it too. We went to school together and on her 50th birthday I bought her a bottle of white and a bottle of red and inside the card it said ‘meet you anytime you want at our Italian restaurant’ and we both broke down and cried. To have friendships span generations you feel a song like this.
I'm 16 and I love Billy Joel and his music. I'm playing this video right now and it's my 8th time in a row playing it back to back just sat at my laptop at 2:30am. Scenes Italian is my favourite song and one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion. It's sad music will never be like this again. I want to make sure I see Billy live but he just came to the UK so probably won't again for years. If you're reading this, I honestly love anyone who loves Billy Joel so have a great day

Dang. How many years later, and watching it on a cell phone, and dang if that energy still doesn’t come through. That middle instrumental section - jeez.
I remember as a kid in the early nineties finding The stranger in a thrift store. When I got home and put it on the turntable I knew every single song. I didn't realize who I've been listening to for so many years on the radio
It's great to see him with his own people, the Long Islanders. This is my favorite performance of this one. Rippin sax, that soprano sax solo was so intricate. Jammin.
I grew up in 70s in Queens NY fortunate enough to have this man in my life with his music. Billy Joel's songs will always resonate with me for as long I live. Thank you God for blessing me growing up to this amazing man's music and talent which I love so much.
I think this is the definitive performance of this song. I haven’t seen or heard a performance that tops it. It’s stellar in numerous ways. Full of power, emotion, fun and precision. Just great. This is what you strive for when you perform.
This concert video ranks as one of his best live performances. I prefer it over Russia. The old band. Home in New York. The crowd were rocking. This has been a fave of mine for over thirty five years. There are some great songs here.
My wife rustled up a copy of this on DVD and surprised me with it on my birthday. Just an amazing performance. This group of musicians was firing on all cylinders from start to finish. Peak concert!

@@calisongbird thank you, I already know that. What I mean is an ACTUAL and BRAND NEW bway show with nowadays singers 🙂
That sounded better than the record. Amazing talent!
I'm 15, I love Billy and his music. Everytime I try to listen to one of his songs, I end up listening to 3 of his albums. I wish I could have seen him live when he was in his prime.
You're a deep soul, Joseph L.
Young people like you give me hope for the future of music.
@Craig Brill I hope I can.
@Snaggle Toothed That's fantastic advice..it's magic isn't it.? Nearly 30 years now,and I wouldn't change a thing.
Just seen him at Wembley, and he’s still got it !!! Willingly pay to see him again. Make sure you do !!!!
Love him😂 he looks dead at the camera and says “yeah I know I messed up” he’s so real
He's actually looking at his drummer. Billy has said that if he ever forgets the words, he looks at his drummer.
when did that happen? I watched it twice and don't see it
M J 2:06
he said "Yeah I know I saw it"
I think he says "I know how it goes"
I love how Billy and his band are playing just as much to everyone on stage as they're playing to the crowd. Simply awesome!
Unbeatable
I have no idea why but I started tearing up during the intro when the guys raised their glasses to the crowd.

Thanks for the great love and support you show me as a special fan of mine, I hope you won't stop listening to music, and thanks for your sincere
Compliment and love towards my music 💗
Man, I just saw him last week at MSG, and, while he’s certainly not the young man in this video here, he still absolutely crushed it, playing 30 songs for 2.5 hours.
Man remember concerts they were so great 😂 I haven't been to a good one since i saw billy at MSG in 2014
My daughter and I are seeing him this June... Can't wait ( had the tickets before COVID)
@@wendymartin8619 my MSG show was his last one before the lockdowns!!!!
@@wendymartin8619 just saw him in Charlotte NC last month, 8th row. My ears are still ringing. Amazing concert. I hope you enjoy it! He is a master at his craft.
@@dzlordthor we were debating to trade our tickets for Nc
As she's in SC now. Decided she'll fly home for visit and we'll have both here instead
How I miss artists that can sing without the help of autotune. Just pure talent.
Still an incredible song. IInstantly takes me back to high school. What an amazing era of music!
This is Billy Joel's best song ever. His piano playing and that sax. May so awesome 😎
BILLY!!! There will only be one. God blessed us with him
"Cold Beer Hot Lights, My sweet romantic teenage nights"
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The song is about a restaurant in Syosset, Long Island.....a very Italian restaurant.....Christianos i believe.....
This song pulled me through my toughest time in the 80s army while on active duties.
A cassette player with one earpiece
Best song ever, piece of art!!!!!
I kinda wish Billy Joel would make a sequel to this song... Brenda and Eddie 50 years later
Piano man will always be the most famous, but for me, THIS one edges it ! !
I love watching concert footage of an artist when they are at the absolute peak of their powers and popularity. Like, the biggest they will ever be. This is that concert for Billy.
I think this might be one of finest compositions ever. It sounds amazing live.
The greatest song ever written and recorded. I still get goosebumps and I’m 53🙄
i second that
It's in my top five all-time ever songs and those top five are in no particular order
Captain Jack is better
Yes Billy! And Mark Rivera on that saxophone 🎷 blown away by the talent more and more everyday
I think that was Richie....
@@bobgunther860 on the studio recording of it I believe it was Richie, but here that’s definitely Mark

Still the goddamn best performance on TH-cam you will ever see . 👏👏👏👏👏👏
One of the greatest songs ever made.
Billy Joel with a very underrated singing voice.
The greatest piece of music ever performed. Absolute perfection.
Dang. How many years later, and watching it on a cell phone, and dang if that energy still doesn’t come through. That middle instrumental section - jeez.
Billy Joel is like Led Zeppelin: so many great songs that the favorite is the one currently playing!
I just grew up with Billy Joel playing in my dad’s car. First time watching him live. I’m in awe. So much talent and charisma.
Jammin.
So what did we learn from this kids? Billy Joel is one of the best live performers ever.... and that glass of wine really knows how to dance.
Hello 👋how are you doing today?
First time I saw Billy Joel live was in Amsterdam, 1978. This has always been my standout song 👌🥳❤️
I grew up in 70s in Queens NY fortunate enough to have this man in my life with his music. Billy Joel's songs will always resonate with me for as long I live. Thank you God for blessing me growing up to this amazing man's music and talent which I love so much.
I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing Billy Joel perform live, but this song makes me want to see him even more.
He's GREAT! Love how he engaged the audience! You MUST go experience him live 😊
I saw him once , on The Stranger tour in 1978, in Philly. One of the best concerts I ever saw.
I think this is the definitive performance of this song. I haven’t seen or heard a performance that tops it. It’s stellar in numerous ways. Full of power, emotion, fun and precision. Just great. This is what you strive for when you perform.
Right on Patrick .. I’m using this performance in a staff training about excellence 👍
Liberty!
Saw Billy last night in St. Louis…❤️
This concert video ranks as one of his best live performances. I prefer it over Russia. The old band. Home in New York. The crowd were rocking.
This has been a fave of mine for over thirty five years. There are some great songs here.
Still wondering how geography factors into the performance, but yes, I agree
Seeing this comment only makes me madder at Sony for never re-releasing this on home video since 1983.
My wife rustled up a copy of this on DVD and surprised me with it on my birthday. Just an amazing performance. This group of musicians was firing on all cylinders from start to finish. Peak concert!
@@kevinzhang3313 Billy is at home in front of a home crowd. Watch documentary footage on the Russian shows. They were daunting. He was visibly nervous.
It's on DVD?!
2:06 TEET *realized he messed up and tries to say blue* jeans nice save billy
"Engineer boots, leather jackets, and teet bleh bleans"
John Collins who cares
@@Lokh66 as many people as there are that care about you
John Collins ok fool.
He mouths “I messed up” a little after that
billy looks at Liberty when he forgets the lyrics. 2:10 he says "Yeah I know I saw it" hilarious
I believe he said" I know what I said"
The greatest song ever written and performed. If you don’t agree you are wrong.
Mark Rivera, my fave saxist of all time, man I got to see him in person at MSG in 2017 and he's even more awesome. Joel is so lucky to have him in his band, one of my favourite Billy Joel songs of all time. Cheers all.
This is my dad's favorite Billy Joel song...and slowly, over the years, it's becoming my favorite as well. It's got everything good about Mr.Joels songwriting rolled into one.
It's sad to think kids in the future may not get to experience this pure bliss of music.
May his music never die
This is a masterpiece of musicianship He is my hero ❤❤❤❤❤
Im 68 musician fr
Philippines i like Billy Joel right now im still performing in Thailand playing piano and guitar thanks GOD
My favorite Billy Joel song when performed live. It is like 1970's teenage opera.
simply perfect performance
2022 still listening to this great music
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
In our old familiar place
You and I, face to face
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
In our Italian Restaurant
Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
Got a new wife, got a new life
And the family's fine
We lost touch long ago
You lost weight I did not know
You could ever look so nice after
So much time
Do you remember those days hanging out
At the village green
Engineer boots, leather jackets
And tight blue jeans
Drop a dime in the box play the
Song about New Orleans
Cold beer, hot lights
My sweet romantic teenage nights
Brenda and Eddie were the
Popular steadys
And the king and the queen
Of the prom
Riding around with the car top
Down and the radio on
Nobody looked any finer
Or was more of a hit at the
Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more
Than that out of life
Surely Brenda and Eddie would
Always know how to survive
Brenda and Eddy were still going
Steady in the summer of '75
When they decided the marriage would
Be at the end of July
Everyone said they were crazy
Brenda you know you're much too lazy
Eddie could never afford to live that
Kind of life
But there we were wavin' Brenda and
Eddie goodbye
They got an apartment with deep
Pile carpet
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought
With the bread
They had saved for a couple
Of years
They started to fight when the
Money got tight
And they just didn't count on
The tears.
They lived for a while in a
Very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter
Of course
And they parted the closest
Of friends
Then the king and the queen went
Back to the green
But you can never go back
There again
Brenda and Eddie had had it
Already by the summer of '75
From the high to the low to
The end of the show
For the rest of their lives
They couldn't go back to
The greasers
The best they could do was
Pick up the pieces
We always knew they would both
Find a way to get by
That's all I heard about
Brenda and Eddie
Can't tell you more than I
Told you already
And here we are wavin' Brenda
And Eddie goodbye
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight
I'll meet you anytime you want
In our Italian Restaurant
Greatest songwriter who’s ever lived
This is my absolute favorite song in the world! I never stop listening to it. it is a masterpiece!
5 ottobre 2024 ... Ancora qui a godere di questa inimitabile performance di Piano Man e la sua BAND 🎹👏🎹👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I saw Joel live years ago when he could do a backflip off a piano. The man still has a lot of energy.
Such a great Man!
jew-gino joel!!!
It's like they're just running the studio version... there's no difference in his voice and its amazing
Its even better - the whole thing came to life for me
@michael matz: Definitely not.
Perfectionist!
this is better
Billy Joel is such a great performer all live no lip syncing !!!
No lip sync, no auto-tune, no light show, just raw talent.

Fabulous LIVE performer!
Magical song writer!
Awesome singer!
Superb pianist!
Thank U, Billy for years of memories & tunes that are forever tied together.

Billy is one of the greatest star in the world.
Do any of you know that he trained to be a concert pianist? That is why he is so good at music theory, chords, and the fingerwork. I wish I knew him - he is a distant cousin of mine.
He is an amazing storyteller in every single one of his songs.
