  • Without doubt, the High Power was one of the most famous pistols of the 20th century, serving around the world in a military capacity. With origins in the pre-World War II world, the High Power became famous for its service during the war and notable for its post-war service, particularly with the British army. Despite its long service, the High Power wasn't without its shortcomings, and Springfield Armory solved many of them in its new-for-2021 SA-35 High Power design.
    Springfield's SA-35 High Power is built on a forged-steel frame and slide and includes a cold-hammer-forged barrel. The frame-and-slide combination is finished with a matte-blue treatment, and the external look of the gun is completed with the addition of a pair of checkered walnut stocks. Unlike High Power designs of old, the SA-35 does not include a magazine-disconnect safety, which makes for a great trigger pull unlike the weighty pulls found on earlier guns. Additionally, despite the traditional short beavertail, this new model features a redesigned rowel hammer that won't come back far enough to "bite" most shooters.
    Other updates found on the SA-35 High Power include an upgraded set of sights, including a rear sight with a tactical-style ledge that allows the gun to be racked one-handed off a flat surface. Control-wise, the SA-35 features a slide-stop lever styled much like the ones found on classic High Powers. However, the single-side thumb safety has been greatly improved with more engagement area. Springfield also upgraded the magazine on its SA-35 by going with a 15-round option from Mec-Gar, leading to a two-round increase in capacity over the original High Power.

    I found one at a gun store that had just got only one in. I snapped it up and certainly haven’t been sorry. I am a 1911 guy, but this pistol is fantastic. Just a really fun gun to shoot!

    Great review, A+. A straight forward and detailed description by a knowledgeable gun expert. Thank you. My next 9 mm handgun is the SA 35.

    The Browning HP-35 is the Granddaddy of Double Standard Pistol very ahead of it's time too bad no Government and Law Enforcement Agencies didn't bother adapting it's use during the time it first came out.

    I had read in some gun magazine that specifically said that while Springfield claims its made in the US, the magazine claims the frame and slide are made in Turkey and finished in the US. Don't know who is right, but with the very reasonable price of $699, I am inclined to beleive the frames and slides are sourced overseas.

    Springfield hit this one out of the park! I love their 1911's, and at a great price point. Even their mil-spec one's for about 550 dollar's and are great. I won't buy the foreign one's as long as Springfield is making them. I just wish they would move out of Illinois and head for greener pasture's like the other companies have done.

    Will Springfield Armory make a subcompact version of this gun?
    Shorter slide, shorter barrel, shorter frame, shorter grip.

    MSRP and availability? My dad bought one in 1958 when I was born. Last gun he shot before he died of cancer in 2008. His step son in law stole it. It was to go to me or my brother in law. I wish my brother in law had got it.

    Have you shot many rounds through this with just one hand? If so, how many rounds, and were there any malfunctions? Thanks!

    It’s very hard to believe that this pistol is entirely manufactured in the U.S.. it’s an all steel gun with a forged frame and reported by other sources as having no MIM parts. How can it be only $700? Does Springfield actually manufacture any other of their firearms here is the U.S.? Their 1911 line is manufactured in Brazil and full of MIM and the XD is a Croatian pistol. I’m thinking these guns are manufactured in India, Hungary or Turkey then imported as parts kits with 80% finished frames that get the “Made in USA” stamp.

      Update: Latest reviews I’ve seen on TH-cam explain that it uses MIM for the small parts including the extractor. The extractor seems to be the biggest issue with this gun as it’s hook is not properly contoured and the channel it rides in has machine marks that the extractor gets hung up on. Hopefully they correct these issues in future production pistols.

    Good luck trying to get one! Might be readily available in a couple years. Right now the gun rags are pumping it up. No local gun shops here have seen any. So for now - hype

      Got my call 2 weeks ago to come get it. Waited over a year. Best part was I got it for $50 under MSRP, so no price gouging as in the internet scalpers. Shot about 75 rounds and worked flawlessly. I have a Browoning HP and had installed Pachmayr bumper pads on the magazines. I swapped the base plates to the new SA 35 mags and got bumper pads on the new gun.

    Let us see that 15 round mag follower.

    • @richardkluesek4301
      @richardkluesek4301 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The magazine tube body is straight walled at the bottom, the spring is different, and instead of the follower having extended legs its hollowed out so a coil of the spring rides inside, all contributing to enough space for the 2 extra shots. I found out by buying one, and comparing it disassembled to a regular FN 13 shot standard magazine. Only the base floorplate is the same.

    be nice if someone would make a walther pp in 9mm

    • @VMEMotor5
      @VMEMotor5 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since the PP is a direct blowback, the resulting pistol would have to be big and heavy. That's why Hi Points are so big. Direct blowback doesn't really work all that well in pistols chambered for calibers larger than .380.
