    Love how they neglected to mention the problems of the M16 was due to US Army Ordnance intentionally made the rifle to fail in Vietnam. What with the switching gun powder from stick to ball, not cleaning kits, and not chrome lined chamber.

    • @MrTee-hw7mp
      @MrTee-hw7mp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But they did mention the gun powder issue.

    • @resolute123
      @resolute123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@MrTee-hw7mp They did, but they didn't attribute it to US Army Ordnance that made that decision. They made the switch from stick to ball without consulting with Stoner and did not conduct to test if it would cause any malfunctions. Watch myth of the M16 by Small Arms Solutions. It's a crime what US Army Ordnance did and the bad rep (and deaths) that the M16 gets was due to Ordnance's intentional negligence.

      @hairydogstail 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@resolute123 They used stick and ball powder throughout the war, but ball powder was used the most, since DuPont could not produce near enough stick powder at the time. Ordnance allowed Colt to use stick powder, "so their rifles would past the cycle rate test" knowing full well their rifles were going to be using ball powder in the field. The M-16A1 rifle was modified" AKA new buffer" to reliably use ball powder. The M-16 and M-4 platforms still use ball powder today..

    A study was done in Iraq and it took between 2-3 hits to knock an enemy down. My father initially carried an M-16, but replaced it by informally requisitioning a 7.62 weapon. 5.56 is inadequate in a triple canopy jungle. My father felt they were outgunned by people firing a 7.62 rifle with 30 round mags.

    I used the M16A1 and other series till the M4. Same weapon just different evolutions through my service. I have not experienced bad problems with it during my military service other than worn parts associated with use and being issued. The only time I experienced being issued with a brand new weapon out of the factory was in Panama with the then new M16A2 in 1989. The M16A2 was slowly issued first to units in Europe, Korea, and certain CONUS Rapid Deployment Units beginning as I saw them at that time in 1987. By the time of the Panama Invasion of 1989-90, the entire 82nd Airborne had M16A2s along with the 7th ID. Pre-invasion units like the a battalion from the 5th ID and enemy Panama Defense Forces were using Vietnam or 1970s M16A1s. They all worked well in combat. I have no doubt in my mind that the M16 series is a fine weapon. As a retired soldier and a civilian now. I have built my own replicas in semi-auto mode rifles in the series and found them OUTSTANDING! The last series I used was the M4. I used it in combat in Iraq during 2006 through 2008. I also have built many M4 semi-auto clones for myself and friends. Very popular rifle today in the US as a go to rifle or carbine by civilians and law enforcement. Unfortunately it has been vilified by the Communist news media as evil. The Communist media have no clue that only evil folks can use everyday objects to commit crimes. An AR-15/M16 series rifle or carbine cannot just be in a closet, out in the open, or be inside a safe. Just suddenly escape to shoot people on it own. If that was the case. Shouldn't cars be under car violence control then? Far more people die from car related deaths like accidents or intentional killings? The car industry have tried to make the car more safely than the individual driver's mind to what their intent is? Like a car as in a firearm. Controls and design to make it safe during proper use. Not designed for an evil person intending it for evil use. Politicians and evil purposed minded lawyers see this is a way of disarming good folks who own these firearms as keeping themselves protected against the common person or as an easy profit by suing firearms makers. Yet firearms protect politicians and lawyers by having body guards, protective details around them or having them concealed for their own means of protections. The people who use the law have a double standard on who will be protected and those who will be disarmed and denied the means of self protection. When they talk about "Common Sense Gun Control" it only means that an ordinary individuals life is no more important than the people who rule over us and interpret the law to their advantage.

      @USM60-JÄGMG42 So many things wrong with comments just like this. The Nam myths about the M16s and it's issues will never die. Eugene made a fantastic rifle but it was utterly sabotaged in the beginning. The people in charge of weaponry were diehard fans of steel/wood firearms shooting full power 30 Cal rounds.
      They fought to kill the AR-15 whenever they saw any opportunity to. After the problems were addressed, the M16 got better and better. It is (not a debate in the slightest) one of the best weapons ever made for the military.
      After putting thousands of rounds through both ARs and AKs over the years, I've still to this day have yet to see an AR jam. The AK has done it a few times though it was simply a matter of parts needing replacement. They are both really good firearms that I enjoy owning.
      Due to some famous mud tests done with the AR15, AK47, and M14, it has been proven that the AR is the one most likely to survive the mud and dirt. The closed action is a benefit as well as the gas system it has.

    Its stood the test of time and has had more influence than the AK 47 if you think about it. The Ak wasn't the 1st assault rifle and wasn't really ground breaking. The M16 influenced the controls on many western rifles. It also changed the materials used to build rifles. The M16 is very reliable and seen it in mud test out perform the AK. It took years to get rid of the stigma it got from Vietnam. Same with the SA80/ L85 A1. Yes it isn't perfect and is heavy but the version now is a decent rifle compared to the version that 1st got issued. It does its job. They British SAS can choose the weapon to take into battle and they take a version of the M16/M4. They have been doing since the 1960s.

    Today the 5.56 round days are numbered. Its struggling with the distance of the engagements in Afghanistan. Plus body armour will only get better. The enemy also know to fire so air support can't be called in easy. Firing from compounds or mosques. We need something between 5.56 and 7.62. 5.56 was adopted so full automatic fire would be controllable. Not many militaries use full auto with rifles. That's the job of the LMG.

    Can someone explain to me why the M16 rifle had only 20 round mags from the get go?

    • @deplorabledave1048
      @deplorabledave1048 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Failure of the US Arsenal. It was the GI's that insisted in 30 round mags because the AK's had them. Even the first Assualt rifle in the world in Germany, had a 30 round mag.
      Note that the M1 Carbine did end up with a 30 rounder in the 1950's, I think.
      Early M16 30 rounders worked poorly. They finally developed something called an Anti Tilt Follower. That works great.
