  • Springfield Armory has given us the SA-35! The Springfield Armory SA-35 is a faithful reproduction of the famed Browning Hi Power. And while it does eliminate some of the issues found in the original Hi Power the SA-35 is still none the less suffering from some teething issues. Head into the comments and let us hear your thoughts!

      Okay,
So let me see if I've got this right...
Springfield Armory is selling their take on the FN Browning Hi Power for $699.00 that you can actually use up until about the 750 to 800 round count before you have to send it out to a Custom Shop to have everything that's typically Springfield Armory either repaired and/or replaced, then upgraded. This should only cost another $400.00 to $700.00, right?
Perhaps Springfield Armory would have actually been better off, at least for the consumers if they had completed their under the table deal with their Mobster Politicians in Illinois. Then we could expect a p.o.s. like this from them right out of the gate.
Well, here in this video you have witnessed first hand why I have a collection of Smith & Wesson Firearms, all of which have been issue free since arriving from the factory as is the case with my Colt's Manufacturing 1911 collection, the same case with all of my Kimber 1911's and the rifles we own from the same fore mentioned companies.
Thank God my Wife loves her 14rd EDC Beretta PX4 Storm SubCompact and never took a second look at the Hellcat and as for myself, my S&W M&P M2.0 Compact 9mm with her 3.6" Barrel and her 17rd magazines will remain in place, keeping my appendix warm.

On the extraction issue: I've seen this in FN and FEG knockoffs of the Hi-Power. I started having issues with the SA-35 almost immediately and took it to my gunsmith to check the SIZE of the channel where the extractor spring sits. Sometimes, the extractor springs expand under stress and the channel/divot/well for them doesn't allow for movement of the extractor so it can get over the rim.. you can pretty quickly tell if this is the issue by trying to move the extractor. If it doesn't move putward under pressure, that's nearly always the problem. I had my gunsmith do a quick reaming of the chaneel to open it a hair, and no problems since. I had to do the same on an FEG and an FN waaay back in the '90s.

It's interesting that you mentioned the issue w/ the hammer being out of alignment. Although not the same gun, I had a 1911 that I sent into Springfield Armory's Custom Shop to upgrade and "improve" for reliability, and after a few hundred rounds (give or take) my gun had that exact issue as well, among a number of other issues. The result was that I would pull the trigger and hear a click, but no bang, only to find that the hammer had fallen into the half-cock position.
Although a different extraction system, I too got the gun back with an exactor that didn't work properly and I ended up fixing it myself by buying a Wilson extractor and tuning it myself. I seemed to have the same mechanical issues on a different Springfield gun which makes me think that they are Springfield issues. Lesson learned, I should've sent it to Wilson Combat. I now carry a Glock 19 and wouldn't even consider Springfield firearms, no matter how good of reviews they might get. Sad thing is that at that point I had a Gen 3 Glock that I'd already owned for years and never had any issues with... and I still own that same Glock and it has yet to have any issues.
My recommendation to anyone is this, don't mess with resurrected relics, and don't buy Springfields. You work too hard for your money to buy things that don't work like they should. Just buy a gun that you will probably never be able to put enough rounds through to break, like a Glock, call it good and be done with it.

Fail to feeds and double feeds (attributed to work out and beat up mags..... after all the pistol used by The Canadian Military are of original vintage). The extractor issue makes me very hesitant. Murphy's law being such, means that issue is going to happen at the worse possible time. I'll stick with my original Inglis made and some of those new Mecgar made mags please. Great video as usual. Many years ago, I bought a new SA M1911A1 "Government Model." It came to me in a purple "Chevas Regal" bag put inside a nice plastic gun box (along with two 7-round magazines and accessories).
At seven yards, I could not hit the target.
I asked the range master to observe my next string of fire.
He told me that the slide seemed to twist at every shot.
I asked him to fire the pistol, and he could not hit the target either.
I contacted SA and stated the problem.
SA paid for shipping both ways, and returned the pistol within two weeks.
The work order stated that the slide rails were cut unevenly, and that a new slide was fitted to the frame.
    Excellent customer service.
Even with modern mass-production, if only one bit of tolerance is out of spec, the gun will function reliably, but accuracy suffers.
    Be well.

I had a ruger that would fail to extract, changed out the extractor and spring with a full clean and 2 rounds later would fail to extract on every round.
I “lightly” polished/cleaned up the fore side of the extractor ramp and that helped. Took it from an every round FTE, to a one in every two mags FTE.
Maybe a slightly stiffer spring, or an o-ring/insert in the extractor bore that may help.
Glad it happened though, I would hate to be carrying it and have that issue in a real life situation. But once it started happening I bought a Hellcat OSP and no problems.
I’ve had dirt, mud, shingle grit, plywood/sawdust, and tons of other building material trash caked all in my Hellcat. Took it to the range and it threw 300 rds down range with no problems.
Took it home and cleaned/inspected it and not a single defect/imperfection on any Larry of the pistol. Except the Holosun RDS from my hammer claw hitting it every day.
Also, what’s the SN on the original gun? Be interesting to tie more problems with an earlier pistol, or chocking it up to overall poor quality/QC.

@@horacegentleman3296 I'm just excited for a modernized Hi power at a reasonable price. I'm fully aware that quality control will probably be an issue for a while, I don't expect there first batch to perfect. I've seen the price gauging and I'm also not surprised.
What I'm hoping is the SA-35 will help push down the price for a proper FN Hi Power. Also that springfield gets their shit together and fixes the quality control issues. I was hoping Garand Thumb would do a review cause he's honest with his reviews. So if there worth it he'll say so and if there crap he'll also say so.
There may be Hi powers available in Canada but that doesn't mean they're readily available in the States. I definitely wouldn't say no to nice Inglis Hi Power.
(As to the bar bunny being willing to do the horizontal shuffle with your ugly mug who else has she been "dancing" with? Cause that may be a gift that keeps on giving and not in a nice way. So maybe stay away from her on those lonely Monday nights.)

Great & thorough review. Thank you. There was enough negatives to the gun to persuade me not to get time. Glad I watched this review first before maybe buying one. Plus, I was already struggling to make a case as to what role this gun would fill in 2021, and the answer is no role really. It’s just a cool historic nostalgic gun to have for plinking and range fun, but that’s about where it’s practical application ends in todays day and age. Much better more modern semi auto 9mm handguns out there that are better at filling the role for a concealed carry gun/nightstand gun/truck gun

Love my 1939ish pre-occupation model. "FN" epic history on this pistol! Great piece of history and still a somewhat modern semi-auto. Tangent sights not for easy quick acquisition, but looking forward to finding an original shoulder stock. BTW, I found if my thumb was riding the slide stop lever, it always locked back after firing. Thanks for mentioning that.

I love the BHP too. Have an FN manufactured BHP Mk III (magazine disconnect & lanyard loop removed, aftermarket wood grips) and am itching to get my hands on an SA-35. Have been following BHSpringSolutions' in-depth shakedown of the SA-35 in which they replace a few parts to optimize performance - and re-blue one sample for a stunning result. Well worth keeping an eye on.

Thanks for the review. It makes me feel good that I bought my Browning in 1989. Still the best pistol for me. Still stock, too. I was at the range yesterday, and as I look at the nick next to my thumb, I will look into the beaver tail/tang extension. And the mag release modification.
I guess I got out before alpacas/llamas were allowed to serve. The times, they are a-changing.

Very good info. Have had a bad experience with a Springfield Saint upper receiver. Same issue wouldn’t extract and caused a double feed, but it didn’t make it 100 rounds. To their credit they made it right and I was back up in two weeks. So good on them for that.

I got a Saint Victor as my first AR and noticed the extractor spring was marred and scratched to shit after 70 rounds. Don't know how that's happening because the finish inside of the extractor slot on the bolt is not scratched even a little bit. Haven't had any malfunctions so far though.

@BuscheTheWizard same, and they had to polish the feed ramp where the bolt closed against the live round that fed against the spent casing. Not a fun failure. Glad they got you fixed up. They were super cool to deal with.

What I'm hearing is first run gun difficulty. Just about every Hi Power factory had the same or other issues. The weapon doesn't lend itself well to smiths that never have product one before. It takes them a bit to get it right. I think it's because of the time in which the weapon was designed. The Hi power is a real favorite and a joy to shoot.

    • @PilotTed
      @PilotTed 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thisismagacountry1318 They do but the flinch isn't because of the recoil, the flinch is from the fear it may blow your gun up like it did with Kentucky Ballistics. Slap rounds are military AP round with a tungston penetrator smaller than .50 in diameter that is surrounded by a sabot that makes up for that, allowing it to achieve a much higher velocity than a standard AP .50 BMG. The problem is, there are a lot of "fake" slap rounds in the market, aka rounds that are not the original slap rounds that the military uses, and are made from taking a the bullet and sabot from a deactivated slap round and seating it in another .50 bmg casing and putting far too much powder, or the wrong powder in the casing. Apparently military surplus slap rounds, like the legit ones, have been known to blow up as well as apparently the company that the US military contracted to make the ammo used cheap power that corrodes over time and burns hotter. Moral of the story, careful with slap rounds, they may blow up your gun.
