All-New 2024 Buick Envista review // A lot to like for the price!!

- This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2024 Buick Envista subcompact crossover SUV.
The Buick Envista has a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, 136 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. This is a FWD crossover which shares the same platform with the Chevrolet Trax. Some may be concerned there is no AWD option but a good set up winter tires may do the trick for many.
Buick is hoping this Envista will attract migrating sedan owners, young professionals and small families to the Buick portfolio. Compared to the previous 1.2L turbo engine, this engine is lighter and uses fewer parts which reduces the overall weight of the vehicle making it quite nimble to drive. A Watts link suspension system is standard on Avenir trims and available on Sport Touring.
Standard driver assist technology with the Buick Envista includes, automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control.
In the US, some of these features like blind sport monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert are not standard but available on all trims.
The Buick Envista is the first vehicle to get Buick’s new design language first seen on the Wildcat EV concept. It offers the utility of an SUV but with sporty and sleek proportions you see in a sedan. It has a low, wide stance, a flowing roofline, a sportback design and a low mounted grille. The Envista comes standard with LED headlamps, 17” wheels, available 18” and 19” wheels.
This Buick Envista offers a modern interior design with plenty of technology including a 19” diagonal screen with the latest Buick infotainment system. There’s also Buick’s signature QuietTuning system which helps prevent unwanted road noise.

We have the 24 Envista Preferred and love it so far. Drove it 300 miles from the dealership with no issues. It’s been a week and still running smoothly. Hoping this will stay a reliable vehicle.

My 24-year-old daughter bought the cousin to this, a 2024 Trax. Initially I was impressed with the looks, drivability, and power. It was not even a month before it had its first tow because it would not shift into drive. I know things can happen with new gen vehicles, but come on, that just shouldn’t happen. BTW, the dealer said there was nothing wrong with the transmission. A fluke thing I guess, but not a good start for my kid’s first brand new car.
Suspect both are South Korea-made (Buick being built at the former Daewoo factory).

@@petercollingwood522 - a Car model can be called one year in advance as long as it debuts on January 1st or after. Mitsubishi tried to sell the 1994 Eclipse on December 1992 and was stopped by the US Goverment.

Seeing this on the highway in Michigan I thought it was an import like jaguar or Range Rover couldn't believe it was so cheap! Looks nicer in person.

Thanks Andrea and Zach…great review! Love the styling and the price! Longevity does not matter to me…I lease and only keep a car under the warranty period. All the reviews seem to say that the engine is surprisingly good for what it is. It’s definitely worth a test drive! Plus I could save a couple hundred dollars per month for a few years…and that’s what makes this Envista interesting!
I drive a 14 year old Buick Lucerne. Super quiet and rides great. Also has “luxury” feel without the higher cost of the true luxury vehicles. Love the brand. Not a fan of 3 cylinder engines but this does look like a nice entry level vehicle.
My 09 lucerne was my favorite car. I regret selling it.
These Korean-built cars obviously have *zero* in common (except the name, Buick) with your old Lucerne.

My grandma's 2016 LaCrosse is hard to beat. 303 HP, 22 MPG, super comfy, quiet, etc.

Totally not my vehicle, but I am impressed. Other manufacturers should take note that "affordable" can still look good and be livable...and have simple controls.
Yeah I won’t be getting one but I’m very glad it exists. We could use more reasonably priced cars that don’t feel like toys a la the Nissan Versa.

Why is everyone so concerned with the small engine??? It’s not a race car. It’s a commuter car. I have BMW x2 and the maintenance is ridiculous so I’m buy the Envista Preferred instead. I commute to work and run errands and trips. I think it’s sexy and affordable!

I think the challenge with these small turbo 3 and 4 cyl engines is not getting very good gas mileage (depending on how you drive, of course). With the size of these vehicles, you often have to push the engine to get speed and thus you use a lot more gas. I'm always a bit wary of long term reliability/quality of turbo engines.
That's my major concern, too. The 1.2-liter I-3 turbo engine is going to get stressed a *LOT* and that could cut down on the durability of that engine, unless there is strict adherence to a maintenance schedule.
I am starting to like the new Buick Envista indeed, but the little 1.2 Liter 3 cylinder engine here concerns me somewhat! Are you familiar with what LSPI, Low Speed Pre-Ignition, entails?
Your concerns are valid. Between a strained engine and GM Korea's long-term reliability track record not being all that great.
My thing is the durability of the engine because that thing will always be working hard and that affects the life of the engine and the durability of the turbo

Hi guys! Just looked into these units from GM. Attractive...and not too expensive...front drive only (what ever) as most people don't remember when ONLY FWD was available...and we were fine, even in snowy Quebec!!! So, a good set of winter tires, traction control (included) and up and away you go...with a nice looking car/CUV! Great story again from GM/Buick/Chevrolet...it will do what it needs to do! People have very short memories. The perception that AWD is better/safer is a hoax. Quite frankly, the skill/experience of the driver is much more important. The idiots that complain about lack of power, no AWD option, and uncertain reliability are the same folks that use cell phones while driving.
I used to hate Buicks and said I would never buy one, but I have warmed up to them. I said the same thing about American cars, but now I own one.
Remote start is standard in Canada even in the base model.
Im not a GM guy at all, but i must say i really like the look of this. I really like the interior styling too!

Get some modern snow tires for the winter and it will be fine. We have been successfully getting around in the winter with FWD cars for decades.
I agree. We have had FWD subcompacts with the best winter tires in Wpg. No issues. Cars with awd cost $2k more, get poorer gas mileage and more parts to fail.
I'll have to disagree with that, in the winter time here where I live the snow and ice is not fun, I definitely want AWD. First, when your on ice or in snow going from a stop with AWD is so much better. Second, once that front tire starts to spin on FWD cars it will just dig down in the snow and then your stuck. Third, these cars are lower to the ground and it doesn't take much to start dragging the snow with bottom of your car, which will make things even worse with FWD. Fourth, you don't have to go buy snow tires and then go through the hassle of putting them on for the winter and then removing them again for summer with AWD. If you live where it's nice or have very mild winters FWD is fine, but if you live in a state where the winters are harsh, than you definitely want AWD like I do. After having AWD I personally would never go back to FWD where I live.
I have driven FWD cars with snows on all four wheels for years in the snow belt of upstate New York with no problems. Very sure footed.
I would take FWD with snow tires over AWD with all seasons without question.
Torque gets you going from a stop. Horsepower is what keeps you going. Turbos are great for that low rpm take off torque. Love you guys!
Turbos actually aren't good for low RPM power right off the line, and the Envista is no exception. Floor it and it launches slow, BUT the midrange power is very strong. Its midrange where turbos actually do best, as it takes a second to spool but once it does they can put huge amounts of boost in and then taper it off at high RPM so that they can use cheaper internals (no need for forged components, just keep redline low and taper off the boost). 99% of the time you're in the midrange, so it makes regular maneuvers feel effortless. The other thing they like to do to make it feel faster than it is are progressive electronic gas pedals. You'll find that 0-50% depressed makes a huge difference, then 50-75% less difference, and 75%-100% almost no difference. By making the throttle progressive, it makes people think the car is faster than it is.
@@BoopSnoot Yes, I remember driving a Cadillac SRX with a small turbo 4 cylinder engine and it was just a horrible driving experience. It would feel good for about two seconds in each gear, after which the power would just go kaput at around 4,000 rpms. There was almost no power above 4,500-5,000 rpms.
@@marct9587 What year did the SRX have a four cylinder?
@@BoopSnoot Now that I think about it, it was a CTS with the 2.0L engine that I drove as a loaner vehicle. That engine is supposed to have around 270 hp, but it just didn't feel like it. And it would run out of steam at about 4,000 rpm.
It's a classy looking ride.

The first thought I had when looking at this is how much this would improve with a hybrid system that added a bit more power at times, and increased the fuel economy by 5 mpg or so. In the same way that the Corolla Cross Hybrid is a step up from the base model, a 1500 or 2000 dollar upcharge to this would seem like a no-brainer.
We all complained about space saver tires now we're happy to just to get one

I’m currently leasing an expensive pick up truck and I desperately want this car. Small, efficient, clean lines and relatively luxurious at an incredible price. Buyers remorse has hit me hard once I started seeing these Envista videos show up on my TH-cam feed.

This car would be an interesting platform for the addition of a motor rear drive axle. Perhaps the battery could go under the rear seat.

As usual, very high-quality review....you guys produce the best car reviews on TH-cam, I am very impressed by Chevy/Buick for this quality vehicle, better than Corolla's, Civics and Elantra's and my advice for anyone looking for quality and the well-priced small vehicle must test drive this.

I'm not a GM fan , but I love this SUV. The styling is beautiful and the price and value is right on !! I hope GM will build many more of these type products , good value and good price.. i wished it had a 4 but for people who live in around cities , it will be perfect. I hope people will consider this and Buick will have a great success with this thing.. so that GM will make , design more of these automobiles.

Nice looking vehicle , enjoyed the review , sorry but I stopped buying from the big three back in 1985 when I had a bad experience with new Chev pickup .
My last ( but not first) bad experience with GM was when I owned an Oldsmobile Alero. Transmission FAILED; steering rack FAILED; power windows FAILED; Interior fit and finish FAILED. No more GM for me in this lifetime.
I had a 1962 Corvair.
The engine leaked oil and only lasted 160,000 miles.
This never happened with the Nash or Henry J I had.

Looks great..but here again time will tell. Told that it is the last Buick internal combustion engine… BEV afterwards. Any hoot, no rear wiper… (not sure with our snowy conditions up north).
I saw one yesterday in white color driving and parking in our plaza; I could not make out the brand or model, and car looked very cool!! I thought.. maybe Acura's new model!? went outside to see the badge... it looks soooo nice, sporty, sexy, fresh Design... you definitely need to see it "in person" to appreciate in 3D appearance, size etc...

Think you’re spot on with the compelling competition; interestingly I think the Trax may be its hottest challenger loaded at $25k (US), versus $31k (US) for a loaded Avenir. My first car was a Buick & I’ve always rooted for the brand, but the decision to go with such small turbo engines, no matter how adequate, that can’t deliver stellar fuel economy for the tradeoff is a curious choice. Do hope it finds its niche!

The profile of this reminds me of the Honda Accord Crosstour which had AWD. I agree, lack of AWD could be a dealbreaker. Shame really, this looks like a nice vehicle.
This vehicle was never meant to be an AWD. It is purposely designed as only FWD....so making comparisons to AWD is useless. So far, Canadian winter testing has shown that the new Trax handles perfectly well on wintery roads... even without winter tires. AWD is not needed.
@@cgmiddle I commented that the profile of the Envista looks like the Crosstour, not the capability. I agreed with what was said on the channel. Most people won’t buy it because it’s FWD only. I wouldn’t compare this with the capability of the Trax. That would be disingenuous.
I work at a Buick GMC & Isuzu Trucks dealership. I’m 6’ 2” and I’m also impressed with the Buick Envista. Buick is testing their waters on the Envista to attract younger buyers. When I sat on the drivers seat of course I scoot the seat all the back and then I sat behind the driver seat. Like this guy says I still have leg room. Even though this is a 3 cylinder turbo with 137 horsepower and 162 foot pounds of torque with a 6 speed automatic transmission. Not a CVT. I’ve seen and sat on the Preferred package which is the basic package. Then the ST which is the Sport Touring package and then the Avenir which is the top of the line package. I like it. I’m impressed with Buick that they made the Envista. However let’s see what happens in the long run for reliability and more. Until then it looks very nice. I’m a lube technician since I know this.
The 4 wheel drive debate is funny to me cause most the people crying at home driving 2 wheels smh go figure front wheels good tires is all you need it's priced good it's stylish looks like a winner for buick

Buick is the most consistent reliable domestic brand, but given this is a new vehicle style it likely won't hit its best reliability rating until year 3. I bought a 10th gen civic new body style and it's reliable but definitely not perfect

Nice exterior & love the hatchback format. Front end reminds me of last generation Escape (as does new Honda CRV) which many critics panned. Get over the AWD folks; it is simply not needed by majority of folks. If you live in an area with some snow, either get winter tires or stay home when the roads are really bad. Why oh why 19" wheels on a car that is design to be relatively inexpensive and fuel efficient? Big wheels just reduce MPG & make ride harsher.
Lol, If your retired you can stay at home, but the rest of us who are working still have to go to work if the roads are bad. I live in Minnesota with 5 months of winter with lots of snow and ice! I LOVE having AWD and would NEVER go back to FWD again living here!

@@billurban1581 My snow driving skills are just as good as they used to be. Been living in a winter state for the last 40 years, and I drive a rear wheel drive delivery truck in it. After having multiple front wheel drive vehicles and now owning a AWD vehicle, I would never buy another front wheel drive again.
@@TheCaptjamestkirk all wheel drive is obviously better in the snow. My point is that you absolutely need all wheel drive .1% of the miles you drive, and for ~80 years we got along without it. How’d we do it? 99.9% of the time it’s way to make a car more expensive, more complex to maintain, and to reduce your efficiency. My last BMW brochure quoted a 6% difference in fuel mileage between all wheel drive and rear wheel drive in the same model car. That’s 6% for every mile you drive not .1 mile. I will admit my argument loses a little of its impact in Canada, compared to Pennsylvania. So what percent of cars in Canada are AWD?

Looking (to me) more like a sleek, raised, hatchback - or liftback - car than a "classic crossover," it makes sense, including its simpler and lighter FWD powertrain. Dividing its tiny 1.2-liter engine displacement between 3 cylinders, rather than 4, also makes sense. 'Have to wonder, though, about long-term reliability/durability compared to Mazda or Honda (we know about Toyota).
Are the rear seats not leather but the front are? Seems weird.
Why is GM falling into the trap of positioning not only the turn signals but also the brake lights into the bumper? Turn signals i get, but brake lights so low is just stupid.
My grandma wants one of these. She has a 2016 La Crosse right now. We test-drove a 2024 Crown- A REALLY nice car. She has a bias against Toyota because she is a GM fan. The Crown is such a nice car but she thinks the Buick will be better. Better MPG- No, Better power- No, Better quality- No. Yes, the Crown is more expensive, but you a getting a lot more car.
Buick did some magic in terms of knowing what old people want. They don't need more than 136 HP. They will get mad if they don't have leather seats. The driver doesn't care about 1 zone climate, rear AC vents, or that the turn signals are down low.
I think this car is going to have problems so we are trying to avoid it... despite how intriguing it might look.
For family road trips, I would want AWD for traveling through states that get snow (and for ski trips). Also, when fully loaded with family and luggage, I'm guessing that 3-cylinder engine is going to struggle a bit. The biggest issue for me is that a 3-cylinder, turbo charged engine will wear out before the larger engines in this category (rpm's = wear). Heck, I've owned many motorcycles with more cylinders than this car. So, I'm still cautious... if they lowered the price even more, that might convince me to take the risk?
Will depend how durable parts will be. But the engine itself can take the rpm's no problem.

Buick & Chevy obviously put some thought into this car and the Trax. It really seams the value is here. They must believe in the power train. I don't believe they would intentionally put a class action/recall nightmare under the hood.

Good review. Really not liking the trend with vehicle interiors going with that split dual flat screen where it just looks like it's sticking up on the dash. I'd rather see an more integrated screen along with a number of knobs and buttons that are built into the dash. BMW is doing the large flat screen on all 2024s and they look horrible. They even added a "kickstand' to prop it up which just looks stupid and cheap. What is wrong with an integrated screen that doesn't just stick up and give me a driver centric look and feel?

Love the exterior and the modern design, but do not love the small size engine. I wish it came in a hybrid. I would’ve bought it in a heartbeat if it’s affordable no see CV T’s for me.
The ALL-NEW 2024 Buick Envista looks really stylish indeed! The 1.2 Liter In-Line 3 GDI Turbocharged engine uses 5W-30 Full Synthetic Motor Oil! The engine has the bulk of its power in ft./lbs. of torque at the low range as the 6 speed automatic works well with this 3 cylinder engine indeed! Beware of LSPI which is an acronym for LOW SPEED PRE-IGNITION which is an engine malfunction that can occur in GDI Turbocharged engines such as this Envista's 3 cylinder engine! Look for a motor oil that offers protection against LSPI! FYI, look for an engine treatment perhaps with Nano-Lube technology that is formulated for LSPI protection!
Better yet don’t buy it.
I always used full synthetic, but whenever I drop the pan to check the mains, I always jiggle the rods just to be sure.

It's really too bad no dealers seem to have this vehicle in stock, don't know when they will, and have no pricing whatsoever for leasing one, if they EVER get any in.
Buicks are about quiet and soft ride, usually reserved for luxury cars. But Buick delivers this… even in a small car.
2 wheel drive + good snow tires + cautious winter driver > 4 wheel drive
I grew up in two stroke, 2 cyl (Trabant) and 3 cyl. (Wartburg 353) cars.
Ode de two stroke is my favorite aftershave.
What I like is the style, color choices and price, what I don’t like is that tiny 1.2 litre engine.
Given its unremarkable fuel efficiency, a turbo 4 with a 6 or 9 speed automatic would be a much better match for Buick buyers. Looks elegant outside and inside on the Avenir trim

The point of downsizing to a smaller turbo engine is that when operating during off-boost (like cruising on flat or downhill), the small displacement can and should sustain the weight and wind resistance of the car.
1.2 cannot sustain that hunk of metal (relatively speaking). That means the engine will always be on-boost.
If you want a car to go as fast, you need to spend as much fuel or more.

The compelling story, really isn't that compelling when you look at the broader equation. Price is the compelling story and fuel economy relative to a modicum of styling and faux luxury of sorts..but question to consumers is...at what 'cost' to the consumer?
The cost will be long term reliability cost.
Now, if a car is an appliance which it is to many and you flip cars like many Americans and Canadians, then this is a 3 year buy or lease and dash. But don't forget to run if you decide to hang around a bit longer and play the out of warranty lottery. 3 cyls + turbo = bad long term reliability. Those 3 cylinders are working very hard for their money. More horsepower per cylinder = higher pressure = higher heat which degrades all things under the hood. Dilemma for engineers is make the engine 4 cylinders, add a bit of weight, but lower stress for better long term reliability. And that added cylinder cuts into corporate profit. So just turn up the turbo boost a bit. Cars are turning into Iphones. Truthfully is largely due to a fickle public. People buy these P'sOS. Throw away society. Own a modern car out of warranty today could easily eat up little Johnny's college fund.
The car being made in Korea is a deal breaker for me. Hyundai and Kia cars are also made their and they have had their share of troubles. I only drive Japanese cars. Every one I have owned thus far has been bulletproof.
This car has only 3% American/ Canadian parts, 97% foreign parts, assembled in Korea, so it’s literally a foreign car badged as American. GM has been doing this for years, I have a very hard time supporting this business practice of GM, especially with government taxpayers bailout and they still continue to sell cheap foreign built vehicles as American.

Mazda 3 is a 2.5 4 cylinder
3 cylinder engines are some of my favorites. They have perfect primacy, secondary and tertiary balance. With that being said so do inclines with multiples of 3. Inline 6's are definitely my choice for cars and SUVs. This thing looks good but it's just not for me.
hmm..am torn..price point..good....poweplant hmm.....size...hmm..for an empty nester likely ok..only fwd...folks..this is Canada..we have winter..deal with it..poweplant...hmm...3 cyl turbo....load it up for the cottage/cabin...watch it buzz around 3000-3500 rpm on the highway..sorry..way to many moving parts for me..thanks for the usual great review..enjoy.

The back looks interesting but the front reminds me of a Ford Escape.
I was about to take a trip to the Buick dealer until I heard the 1.2 3 banger nonsense that can barely get 30mpg while rewarding you with less than 140hp. Come on!
The owners of the sister Trax are claiming 35-40.

I don’t care for AWD but that “pressure cooker” engine makes me nervous especially since GM botched the reliability with their 1.4 turbo. Definitely gonna bring 3 chubby friends with me for the test drive if my curiosity gets the better of me. Thanks for the feedback.

It might feel surprisingly good, but the fact is these little motors with turbos are under a lot more stress and heat which is not going to be good in the long run for the durability of the engine, and then you also have to deal with turbo problems down the road too. This is just not my opinion, my brother works on these small motors and turbos at one of the dealers here where I live. The ONLY reason these motors are even getting turbos on them is because they are way to weak on their own.
I think only some boomers will buy this because of the badge and maybe some clueless young people who care only about exterior looks. This is behind its competitors in pretty much everything.

I moved away from GM many years ago, so this is a vehicle that had not even been on my radar.
Buick what? I said.. haha
This is really a nice looking vehicle, but the mediocre 1 engine sku choice is really baffling.
Still, this is decent vehicle for those on a limited budget who want a NEW vechile that still provides good mileage and has nice interior finishings and modern options.
I am actually considering this as a grocery getter and Winter Beater! 😅
I'd take the trax before this simply because it's essentially the same vehicle but cheaper. But I would never buy either. I have no confidence in the inadequately sized engine they are using a turbo to compensate for. Not the kind of vehicle I'd be interested in being stuck with out of warranty. It's lease or nothing with these new things for me. If I'm going to actually buy a Buick, it'll be a 2000 to 2005 Park Avenue or LeSabre - from a very senior citizen - for a few grand.
