      @Indispensable Strait That's an incredible story. I actually live right in the edge of Franklin and Wake counties and do a lot of deer hunting, mostly archery. You are probably about two and a half hours from me. I hunt quite a bit in Halifax county near Scotland Neck and I know there are bears in the area but I have never seen one. I have a picture of a bear on trail camera in Wake County so they are moving into this area. I've always wanted to bear hunt down east but just don't know where to go. Any advice?

    I'll take a 350-400 lbs bear with a big skull (21 to 22 inch) over an Eastern coastal hog that achieved its 700 lbs weight by grazing year round but does not have a big skull. These bears simply put are very obese. Nothing wrong with a fat animal but they aren't trophy quality in general offering a disproportionately small head to body ratio. Compared to a lean well conformed bear. If I'm wrong, then a 700 lbs Eastern coastal black bear would have a 24-25 inch skull which is extremely unlikely in their habitat. Conversely, I've seen the mounts of two Manitoba black bears weighing over 800 lbs that squared over 8 feet with enormous skulls. One was cinnamon, the other black. The black one was a bit bigger. closer to 900 lbs. Unusual and very rare but amazing trophies. They were the size of very large interior grizzlies. I prefer not to go by weight, rather by measurements but weight is still impressive.

    I hope.you.give Maine another chance someday, gotta come in the fall. We have good numbers, largest population in the lower 48 and we get 400-500 + lbs every year . Just the small camp.i go to there is one every year 400+/- in our group of hunters. Problem is too.many people shoot yearlings and drags the average down. It's mandatory in Maine when you tag a bear they take a tooth and post the ages and weight every year of the harvest and every year there are multiple 20 yrs and older, I think 28 is the oldest I've ever seen, but always multiple 20s, 22 yrs old, 18yrs old and on. So far north in northern Maine it's nothing for a bear to cross into Canada and back, decent food plenty of coverage, thickest Forrest you'll ever see. I want to say the state record is 798 lbs or something like that, just under 800. Never measure the skull though I don't know why, it's all about weight here, which I had one 3 years ago was my biggest and I wish the skull would of gotten measured just for my knowledge. Guess I'll have to get a bigger one to measure.

    In Eastern NC we have harvested a lot of bears that are very high scoring in B&C but....... we shoot many of our bigger bears in the head and therefore Boone and Crockett does not recognize the score. I have taken many myself and guided hunters to many over 500 lbs and when you crawl to them where we are and as thick as it is you don't take a chance. Mainly because of the value of our hounds . A heart shot bear can take out your whole pack before he goes down. Still hunting works in very controlled environments but hunting club lands and State owned gamelands where you have all game hunters working and hunting among each other hounds work better. Especially in our expanses of thick pocosin (swamp on a hill). Bears are commonly very nocturnal as is a raccoon but we can't bear at night so to target a trophy bear it is very common to use hounds and a way of life for us.

    Maybe you can give your best "guestimate" of a black bear that I almost ran into while driving through our neighborhood streets two years ago th-cam.com/video/jLNpVt1L7Jk/w-d-xo.html
    I have done some research [correction internet searching] on the Florida Black Bear since my near collision with a Florida black bear. I was very surprised to learn that on average the Florida Black Bear is the larger than the Canadian Black Bear. I have read on the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission that the largest Florida black bears were 760 lbs., 740 lbs., (males), 460 lbs. & 400 lbs. (females). The keyword is "known": the bear that I saw run in front of my car had to be in the 700 lbs +/- weight-class:

    • @BowhuntingRoad
      @BowhuntingRoad  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely a big adult male possibly close to 500 pounds. Certainly Florida black bears can get huge because they do not hibernate for half the year like they do in the northern boreal forest. However, on average, Canadian black bears re larger. Do some research on Bergmann's Rule.

    Have you heard of/seen the mount in Bruno, MN? We saw it before a fire severely damaged it. I've been deer hunting there since 2013, and see lots of scat. His sons and grandsons still roam the area. Sorry, I can't figure out how to paste in a photo. Here's what I wrote to my family after seeing the mount:
    But just NE of there on Hwy 23, we stopped in the tiny "town" of Bruno, pop. 161 for lunch. There they had a Bruin with a capital B for sure! 792, yep, seven hundred ninety two pounder. In case you can't read the placard, it was hit by a semi in early Nov 2010. Now, I thought bears would be denned up for winter by then. The site was approx. 15 miles from DAR, and that was just 3 yrs ago last season. Wow! The experts said he would have stood 9 ft if raised on his hind legs like the other mount. Hide alone weighed 200 lbs. Had to use a grizzly head taxidermy form; no black bear supplies were anywhere big enough.
