Incredible video! The subject of bears is of great interest to me. I live in the Kootenay region of British Columbia, in the city of Nelson. We have a large number of bears living in our city. I don't like it, but the save the bear folks are the loudest. One park within the city was closed for months last fall as 7 bears were living there. This spring, it's closed again because a mama with her cubs are living there.
We even had a mama grizzly with her two offspring living in town. For now, the strategy is no kill. I think it might lead to a serious attack.

We have property in WV...about 70 acres, but it is surrounded by about a thousand wooded acres on all sides. We have never seen a bear and have been all over the woods. I'm 55 and have run the woods since I was 3 years old. I have found odd looking scat in the past few years. I took a pic and googled it and it says North American Black Bear. My cousin put up some hunting cameras just near the property and he has captured a few bears on camera. It kind of freaks me out. I'm against hunting personally but I as a bear enthusiast wanted to hear both a biologist/ecologist and an experienced hunter's opinions on the subject.
I've heard of some hunters from other states participate in some horrible behaviors so it's nice to hear there are some sane hunters.
I've heard of people specifically targeting studies to keep ear tags as trophies and poachers basically driving up to the dept. to drop off a collar from a bear they poached at the entrance and leave before getting caught.
Targeting bears that were rehabbed in sanctuaries just to spite sanctuary workers...
Traps that cause nasty infections/amputations, slow suffering and other horror stories.

    • @CordeliaAurora

One thing I believe wasn't mentioned is males predating on cubs just so the female will enter estrus (heat) and breed.
Happens more often with brown bears but from what I've seen/heard black bears do that too.

These people have no clue. Black Bear takes Fawns, and other small animals raccoons even, I have seen bear fish, and hunt small game, young deer, if Elk live in the area young elk. I would say 30% of the bear diet is meat. I don't get why these so-called biolgies keep claiming bears or in this case, black bears rarely eat meat unless it's found. They will hunt. I have watched black bears hunt and kill many times in my life. If it was not that common I should not have seen it so often. I have watched a bear kill and eat a cat for fk sake. Oh, they will eat a human as well, kill and eat that is. Normally they don't go out of their way to do it, and the bear has to feel confident. but if the bear thinks it can, it will. It is rare but possible depending on the encounter. don't get me wrong, I agree black bears eat a lot of plants, nuts, berries, etc. I'm just saying they eat more meat than you think from what I have seen in my time on this earth.

The Indians use to have to hunt a dear with a knife as initiation. I am told from Apache Indian. This is not about survival, that you need to kill the bear to eat. It's about sport mostly. And the animal should have the advantage. Remember a fact that 70 percent of the quantity of animals on the Earth since the 70's are gone. Should give them more of a respectful kill.

Thank you. I find it actually disgusting that people "hunt" bear, bobcat, lynx, and mountain lions by having your dogs chase them up a tree and then you walk up right under it and shoot it. Also where I live, it is illegal to use bait. Highly frowned upon. Hunting takes time, technique, failures, and bit of serendipity or destiny. You must use discretion, and have a respect for the animals and yourself. If you are hunting for any reason other than you enjoy it and intend to feed your family with all the meat available, then you are not hunting you are indulging yourself in misplaced coping skills or a way to give in to your character defects and insecurities without outwardly being found out.
