Black Bear takes on a Grizzly over a dead bison - Yellowstone National Park, Boulder Lake

  • A rather large Black Bear boar shows up to Grizzly bison BBQ party with only a table for one. Not willing to back down the Black Bear runs the Grizzly off until he decides he might have the advantage and wits to take on the Black Bear. Watch through the end as another apex animal shows up for leftovers. Yellowstone National Park @Yellowstonewolves

    OMFG!!! This is amazing footage! This is freaking insane footage!!!
    I do not believe there are too many recorded interactions between these bears in their natural habitat, extending over 10 min...AND, with a cameo by some poor, hungry bald eagle trying not to get too wet when a bear comes back!
    This vid capture should cannonize you in the annals of nature photographers and videographers!

      Learn your biology folks. Male black bears regularly grow to 600-700lbs. In Pennsylvania, it's not uncommon for them to hit 800lbs. Yes, grizzlies are more fearsome, but it's not that unusual for healthy, well fed male black bears to grow nearly as large as grizzlies.

    • @masonharkness6437
      @masonharkness6437 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@JohnB-dr8skif you were so well versed in biology you’d know that species often range in sizes to due environmental and resources. In Canada it would be rare to see a black bear pushing 600lbs, they are more in the ball park of 250lbs - 500lbs. Black bears regularly don’t grow to the same size as a grizzly bear lol

    • @JohnB-dr8sk
      @JohnB-dr8sk 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@masonharkness6437 I'm not going to argue with someone who's hasn't done any research. In Western Canada near the BC coast where food is abundant, male black bears regularly hit 600+lbs and grizzlies grow nearly as large as Kodiaks.
      In Alberta, very large black bears have been caught on trailcams chasing down wild horses and eating their foals. We know the size of these black bears compared to grizzlies there because both have been observed eating the same carcass at various times.
      Yes, it's true that in some parts of Canada and the US, male black bears will generally not grow beyond 400-500lbs. But in Pennsylvania, their Dept of Natural Resources find enough 700-800lbs male black bears that don't find it rare and they LIST THIS INFO ON THEIR WEBSITE.
      Try actually researching things instead of just reading an excerpt somewhere and proclaiming yourself to be an expert when you really don't know anything.

    Once, by accident I was behind a bush and a rock and watched a Grizzly bear walk by on a hiking trail very close by. I used to comfort myself by imagining all the ways I would defend myself if attacked by a bear on a trail. As this bear passed by I realized it was so very much bigger than I'd imagined a big bear to be that there would be nothing I could do if attacked unless it couldn't stand the sound of high pitched whimpering and cursing. You shot this video from the right distance. The focus is sharp and the image clear without any shaking. Good job.

      Bear spray. That's what you do. If you are going to be where there are bears, carry bear spray and have it accessible at all times, not in your backpack. Bears are very fast, you will be in a lot of trouble before you ever get it out. Also, learn how to use it. 12-15 ft. Any more than that and you will be holding an empty can of spray when the bear reaches you. Again, bears are very fast. Stay safe

    Very nice coverage! Never did I expect to see a Black Bear drive a Grizzly away from a bison carcass. It was an exceptionally big black bear and probably a young and inexperienced Grizzly, but it was still a surprise. This rarely happens. Actually, most bears-Grizzly and Black-don't like to fight, there is too much risk of serious injury when that happens. If they can accomplish driving away the other by posturing and intimidation they prefer that route. That Grizzly was young, but he never left the kill area. He kept posturing and pushing back on the Black Bear until the latter got the message-there was too much risk for him if he stayed. He got a few bites of bison, at the end of the day everyone got a taste. That's Nature.

    I think the black bear was an unusually large adult and the grizzly was not an adult, and possibly not hungry, which is why it backed off. BTW I worked four years in Grand Teton and one year in Yellowstone during which time I saw a few bears. I live in Northern California now, we have black bears but no grizzlies although there is one on our state flag because at the time the flag was designed there were grizzlies here, things have changed since then.

    Black bears are no joke. I live in the Smokies where we have the densest black bear population in America. In the last few years there have been 3 bears over 600 lbs harvested on every surrounding side of my property. Except the South side. And they have two on camera that will go over 600 lbs. I have hunted elk in Hawks Rest and have been up close to grizzly bears as well. I don’t want to get too close to any of them! I don’t trust them at all. They can flip on a switch from calm to ferocious in a heartbeat! Nice video!

      @sirtango1 - Thank you for commenting and watching. I agree with you that Black bears are not a joke and like Grizzlies should always be treated as unpredictable. I spent my early years as a Navy trained DeepSea Diver and there was always one thing I kept in mind - the ocean is no joke and should always be respected. I think that same thing now about bears. Hi to Germany, from Oregon US, an American with German heritage. I really enjoy it when people from different countries say where they are from. I always try to say hello to as many as I can, as so many disturbing things have been happening to people, around the world. And there is a fool that claims he's the president of the US, who's responsible for a lot of it. It's hard to accept such criminality from those who are without conscience and full of lies. I know it may sound cliche', but I hope "we the people" of the world can come together against criminals who steal leadership and become tyrants. It may seem like a strange, off the subject comment, but I promised someone dear to me I'd say something nice to someone today, and to try to do that everyday.
      As for the video, I find nature a pleasant way to take a break from the nonsense going on in the world, and just be amazed. It's always good to see and appreciate nature; simple, beautiful and without deception. May it give you a peaceful feeling in every way. I'm not sure if I'll ever get to see the homeland of my grandmother,who moved to the U.S. in the late 1920's early 1930's, but have many German friends and love the pictures they've shared with me.
      Stay blessed and well always, from my state and country to yours, 1000's of miles away~

    Man, do you realize what you just caught on film? for all of us eternal searchers of bear on bear fights (in my case probably I've seen them all) this is a jewel. Needless to say what this means for biologists. This is a dream encounter to watch for all of us who are nuts about real fights between powerful big carnivores in the wild. This is the first time I see a real video of an encounter between a big male black and a big male brown bear in the wild!! There are a few other videos out there with the 2 species going at it but they are very likely staged by humans or are not worth it. This is cool as hell. There it goes the believe many of us always have had that a big male brown bear will always intimidate and displace no problem a big male blackie in an encounter for food or anything. Even though most of the times definitely this is the case, this video proves it's not always like that. There could be many factors here tho... maybe the blackie was older and more experienced and the brown was a younger adult? Maybe they already had an encounter before and the brown got a beating? maybe the blackie was full and that's why he retreated at the end? maybe it was just a huge brown female? (I don't think so tho) ... well, who knows. Regardless, congratulations brother!!! I'm telling you, I have seen them all... what you caught on film is gold!! one of the best on the internet in terms of the event. Thanks for sharing!!!

      @xico5208 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      Just a quick correction, the brown bear is not an adult. It is more likely a juvenile that is not brave enough to confront a very large black bear. An adult brown bear would have sent the black bear running to the woods in no time.

    • @asterio8405
      @asterio8405 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      @@xico5208 That could be the case. I mentioned that in my comment. But that is just speculation. There's no way for you, unless you're such a bear expert, to be able to tell trough a video shot at that distance the sex, age, weight or the life history of the animals. Actually for what I see, the brown bear is bigger than the Black but, it doesn't matter. The thing is that the black bear did something very rare that normally doesn't happen in the wild and that's the important thing here... and it was caught on video and shared thanks to this channel!! At the end you say the black bear woud have fled if the brown would have been older. Again, you don't know how old is it and everyone here know browns normally displace black Bears so, your final comment is unnecesary. You sound more like a fan boy who got hurt that your guy had to run. We are just observing nature here and analyzing animal behavior son. This is not the UFC, just chill and enjoy nature.

      Grizzly bears aren't born fully grown you know. The means that there are juvenile grizzlies that have to fend for themselves and aren't yet fully grown. A fully grown grizzly might outweigh a black bear by a factor of two or more and no black bear would challenge them. A juvenile grizzly is still a bit smaller than a fully grown male black bear so it's not unusual for a fully grown black bear to drive a young "teenage" grizzly off.

    What an amazing video to capture and film. I would imagine it is not always easy to get footage like this, and to be undetected in order to capture the subject in its most natural and uninhibited. Cant say I'd ever see the day, when a Black Bear would give a grizz cause to retreat. You can tell the grizz is young, because he hasnt figured out his superior power. A bit funny, like watching a Bulldog chasing off a Mastiff. They can both do some damage, just one is substantially bigger than the other, which the black bear finally took notice. Although nature can be "cruel" at times, it wasnt that day by that lake, because it looked like everyone there at least got a little bit to eat.
