Leaving Our Rural Balkan Village to Explore Bulgaria! THE VALLEY OF THE THRACIAN KINGS | България

  • Today we will leave our Little European Village to travel Bulgaria. Destination: THE VALLEY OF THE THRACIAN KINGS. Again, we will find ourselves where past meets present!
    ABOUT ME:
My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

*I LOVE YOUR DRESS* after the covid lockdown everyone in Burgas Bulgaria was dressing like slobs, they had stopped changing out of house clothes to go out.
Last year it improved a little and this year I am delighted that most people are back to dressing nicely. It might sound silly, but the effort Bulgarians put into looking nice was one of the reasons I moved here. I have seen so many beautiful dresses this summer, its been such a pleasure. [edit - Im a semi professional tailor of historical suits]

Thracian Gods and heroes adopted by the Greek pantheon: Dionysius and his entourage, Orpheus and his mysteries, the Devine tweens Apollo and Artemis. Don’t forget Spartacus, born in the region of Sofia/Serdica, who shook the foundations of the Roman Empire and remains to this day a world symbol of the fight for freedom! ❤

    The stonework is superb.
So good that some contents survived.
British ones are much smaller using undressed boulders, but then they're 3800-3500BC. I think they were all robbed out. They're everywhere here - probs one every ten miles.

Wow. Amazing archaeological remains. And in the middle of nowhere. One of my favourite subjects, I run a small archaeology society in Sussex, England 😊. I understand that in Bulgaria the State is responsible for all archaeology. In England we have voluntary societies and societies that are professional because people are paid and then we have a State organised structure, bit complicated. I recently picked up a small booklet on Thracian Treasures. An amazing culture.

Oh wow!!! I’m so sorry for the late reply.. I wish I had seen this comment sooner! I had no idea you were so strongly involved in archeology! I figured you had experience based on all your enlightening comments but this is truly amazing to hear!!
My mom is an archeology major and it was always her passion to become an archeologist full time but unfortunately everything you said is true and unless you are born into a very wealthy family and have funds to fall back on, it’s very tough to live off of the salaries the state pays in Bulgaria .. you are so lucky to be able to be involved in such important work!! 😊😊😊

@@sistersofbulgaria9396 thats very interesting about your mom. We do have paid archaeologists in Britain but its still down to volunteers who work for nothing to do most of the digging, or should I say excavations 😊. Sometimes though we just dig holes to test if there is any sign of artefacts etc. We have a Treasure Trove Law in Britain so any thing important is reported to the authorities and the finders get a reward. But I am interested in finding a Roman Villa, we have already found Roman tile. Its the thrill of the hunt 😊.

Was that actually some Bulgarian traditional music? It is also strange to see that there is not much of visitors there, is it because it situated in the outskirts of Bulgaria?...

Thank you so much! I’m still learning how to tune the music and appreciate any and all constructive criticism. I will aim to keep the music a bit lower. It’s really tricky because it seems to have a different “loudness” every time I test it on a different device. I may need to invest in some more advanced music / editing programs down the road.
Bulgaria in general doesn’t get all that many tourists. The ones we do get generally stick to the beach and better known sites closer to bigger cities. The sites I filmed are off the beaten path 😃
