- Update: We are renovating and restoring our traditional Bulgarian village homestead, with the goal to bring life to it again.
ABOUT ME:
My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

Събудих се една сутрин и осъзнах, че Ню Йорк не е за мен. Купих си билет (същият ден!), стегнах си малкото куфарче, и се завърнах в България… в бащиното ми селце, там, където животът е спрял, и там, където разбираш кои неща наистина имат смисъл! Забравих какво е стрес, напрежение и нареждане на деня спрямо часовника! Часовник, какво е това? За да ползваш телефона си, отиваш до специално място, където има обхват, и така говориш! Чувстваш се така, сякаш живееш в годините от Възрожденския ни период! Обожавам и ценя всеки миг, прекаран тук!
Всички се чудят не е ли трудно да живееш в село с по-малко от 40 души, отчитайки, че идвам от град с 8 милиона жители! От небостъргачи до рушащи се изоставени къщи…От доставки на бързи храни до готвене на жар и весели чевермета! Предимствата да живееш на село са безкрайни... На първо място трябва да осъзнаеш какво дава то на душата ти, защото тя е най-важна! След това да забравиш за клишето, че няма реализация!
В момента: Моят приятел и аз обновихме изоставената къща на предците ни! Пригодихме я така, че да не ни липсва каквото и да е удобство! Не беше лесно, но определено интересно и изключително възнаграждаващо. Няма нищо по-добро от земеделието, отглеждането и търсенето на собствена храна... и поддържането на традицията жива. 🌱

Even in our fairly modern flats in Sussex, England, we always get lots of spiders in summertime, they deal with the little bugs and flies.
That’s the good part! They take care of the flies and mosquitoes 😃
Personally, spiders don’t bother me but the spider webs make the house look uninhabited and untidy. I usually leave a spider or two in each room to catch flies.

Wow. Nice job of the renovation. Looks real choice too. The outside walls look to me like they might be around 500mm to 600mm thick. I guess that would help to keep the house warm inside in the wintertime. And cooler in the summertime. And also be mighty solid as well too i suppose. We have swallows here what look very much similar to those and even like to fly in similar pattern. But the ones we have here are only about half size compared to those ones. Ones here like to sit in a line on a overhead wire or what ever they'd find to all go and sit in a long line on. They sit there and chatter. Quite friendly-ish too. Very alert as if they might perhaps be an intelligent type bird
The village stone buildings look very picturesque and have stood up to the test of time 👌
Yes! The houses keep very cool in the summer and warm enough in the winter. We still need to light a fire but the walls hold the warmth well.

@@sistersofbulgaria9396 oh great i'm really looking forward to that video then. They build themselves amazing structure for their nest too. Don't they. So neatly woven. Well they do down here anyway. I suspect they might do the same thing too, way up north. Its interesting to see those particular type birds are found way far up north and far down in the south too. Even although their size differs
I love the style of the building i see up around the northern countries what utilise the stone and the round wood beams. We don't see many of those style buildings down here sadly. For one thing our building codes and regulations are like overkill for safety. Even although the building you have there with the hugely thick walls and all, are obviously well and truly strong enough.Even when the beams are not necessarily always made from same sized beams.Its still strong enough. But its our bureaucracy down here, its been turned into a particular type of tyranny . Part due to idiots who let the power the end up with to go to their heads (ie:council staff etc) . Presently its all been backfiring, as there's now a growing homeless issue. Due to lack of housing. So some of the draconian building laws have had to be reined-in and been altered.
But of course rocks are plentiful too. So i figure they likely created laws that prevented the citizen here from utilising them, to help to cause the citizen to need to purchase more sawn lumber, which in turn had then allowed their crony mates to become extremely wealthy
I have built a number of retaining walls using ground-treated roundwood .When i ran a landscaping business. I thoroughly enjoy working with roundwood. The eye-crometer often becomes the mainstay tool to utilise . As a level or plum bob cannot always be used so well. They can help, but in the end how it looks visually to the eye crometer is what counts most of all. I really love that factor within that style of building

Yes! Great eyes and thanks for pointing it out! We know about it but haven’t gotten to fixing it yet. It’s definitely something we need to get on asap!
Oooo thanks for noticing the carpets! I purposely filmed downwards in hopes that someone would notice and appreciate them. Yes, many of them are made locally. Others were bought from Turkey but they are all really old. I’m pretty sure they are from before my time 😃. We were lucky enough to inherit loads and loads of carpets.
I love your village. Yes lots of cleaning with old houses and you have to be ok with sharing space with critters of all kinds!

Is your village a mixed village? The houses bear both old Turkish and Bulgarian traces.
It’s very exciting that you are noticing the little details! Our village is strictly Bulgarian but Bulgaria in general has a lot of Turkish traces (amongst others) . We were under Turkish occupation for 500 years and the traces are here. 🌞🌻🌞🌻🌞

Hahaha, I like both but this is a serious invasion we have going on here 😂🕷️ You should have seen the spider I found yesterday… it was pretty much a tarantula! 😮 😳😃
awesome cleaning building renovating? hahaha where i live there was nothing except spiders ticks predators weeds sage grass,...and wildlife i had to put everything in..no septic no water no electrical no road no garden no trees no shrubs...... and i did it mostly alone.. so buying an old place and redoing it? would be just another challenge to accomplish.

We also underwent a full renovation. I just didn’t have a TH-cam channel back when we started. Driving new water lines and electric was the hardest part but keep pushing. It will pay off!
