Village Life in Rural Bulgaria - Supporting the Local People in an Eastern European Village | Село

  • Welcome to our Rural Bulgarian Village…stuck in the past. Today we help out the locals on this old Balkan farm and see what life was like 200 years ago!
    ABOUT ME:
    My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
    I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
    I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
    Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

    "" For what wealth do i have if not time for those in need "", Commendable that you took the time for those in need , something that many would turn a blind eye to .
    O but to stand still and become unseen , where once laughter resounded now silence speaks louder then those moments ......again to only once more return as one with all ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
    Still in awe of the stone work and precision that they used to get the walls so perfect , and the color of the stones , .....when the sun shines on them they must be a sight , they look so vibrant here but i imagine in real they are even more stunning ..........Bravo , well done

    Good work by the Red Cross ♥
    Love the retro/antique display on the house - they have taste - it's like a Bulgarian village version of the V&A museum in London 😂 (art, culture, social history stuff)
    I'm interested in economics and I saw some figures that said that the Bulgarian pension is 3 times the average salary, but the salaries are very low. (If interested Google "2024 Pension breakeven index: How does the UK state pension compare to the rest of Europe?")

    • @sistersofbulgaria9396

      Haha they definitely do have taste! I love old Knick knacks like these and have filled our house with stuff like this as well 😃. I can’t tell you how much I want to visit London! I love museums, history, art, culture etc and there seems to be so much to see in England. Hopefully one day soon ❤️
      It’s really strange that you are seeing this info because the pensions in Bulgaria are tragically low. They are definitely not higher than the average salary. To give you an idea, the lowest pension was 350 leva ($195 USD) a month until just a few years ago. Now, I believe it is around 600 leva ($335 USD). The average salary is around $2000 BGN (1,113 USD). The sad truth is both the salaries and pensions are tragic.

      Bulgarian pensions are 4 times lower than the average salary of 1175 Euro for last month (checked the national statistics).

    Why are the young people abandoning the villages? Is it simply a matter of there being no jobs available?

    • @nedyalkokarabadzhakov5405

      First not all villages are like this there are villages that look like monaco but fair amount are like this, people leave for the city or immigrate(not that in the other country they will live much better). Jobs, lack of infrastructure, no schools for their kids, no hospitals, problems with gypsies and generally not much to do if you dont want to work on the land. If the village is close to a city they will survive people buy a house and spend weekends, summers there but more secluded once dosent have this future.

    • @sistersofbulgaria9396

      I think it’s a mix of no well paying jobs being available and a desire to live in the hustle and bustle of a big city. For example, in these little villages there are no restaurants, no salons, no shopping malls etc. I think young people gravitate towards the “excitement” of city life and the promise of more money.
