Why Indian Truck Drivers Get Their Trucks Painted

  • With close to 8.5 million trucks plying on Indian roads, the trucking industry is India’s backbone when it comes to the supply of essential services. Indian trucks are also known for another thing - their fantastical art! For truckers in India, having a kaleidoscope of colours, art, slogans and symbols is almost a rite of passage. The bulky body of the truck becomes a mode of expression, not only for them but also for many truck artists in the country. VICE meets Nafees Ahmad Khan, a truck artist from Indore, a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. We also meet truck drivers stationed at Nafees’ workshop to understand why they get their trucks custom painted and what the iconography means for them.

I do not understand why people disliked this video. Is it the work of art, is it those men suffering yet finding happiness, is it the truck itself or is it because people don't get it?
Truck drivers are most disciplined (majority of them). Go on a highway and they are the ones following lane discipline (even though they are not well educated). There has been many instances when truck drivers have let me overtake when it was safe, by hand gestures. When I noticed this a few times, I stopped honking/flashing lights. I just make sure I am in the driver's view and I get to pass by safely. Next time you are driving your car, have respect for other drivers, but have utmost respect for these truck drivers.

Bro, Hitler actually adopted the swastika symbol from Indians because when the 19th century German translators were translating old Indian Sanskrit texts into German, they found a lot of similarities between the two languages and concluded that the two races of people had a common ancestry between them. Otherwise swastika was supposed to be a good luck symbol and was a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and if I am not wrong, was also found in Japanese culture. But then Hitler happened and the symbol got a negative connotation around the world!!

Since I was a kid, me and my mother would always spot a truck with “a women carrying a pot” as mentioned at 3:18 and now it has become a tradition to spot the painting every time we travel, and I love it cause these are the small memories or details you will cherish in the future!

Let me tell you guys the story behind the famous 'Horn OK Please' painted on the rear side of Indian trucks.
It's actually 'Horn Please' and 'OK' - 2 separate things, and it was an ingenious way of communication between truckers back in the day when roads were narrow and trucks were slow.
When, lets say Truck A had to overtake Truck B, it would honk/sound the horn - that's the 'Horn Please' part. Since the driver of Truck A cannot see what's beyond the Truck B - like a sharp turn or an oncoming vehicle, the job of deciding whether the road's clear for overtaking was of the Truck B. There used to be a light accompanying the 'OK' sign. So, when the road got clear for Truck A to overtake, Truck B would switch on the 'OK' light and Truck A would know it's safe to overtake and would do so.
    Yeah, that's what it meant.
A simple yet effective way of showing courtesy to your fellow truckers and caring for each other's safety.
Now that the trucks have become a lot faster and roads have become wider, the Horn OK Please lives on as a cultural sign in the trucking community.

It's tough to be married to someone who's always gone.
My best friend's dad was a trucker and they almost got divorced twice (her mom HATED how she barely saw him) but managed to make it work.
Both parties were loyal to each other and actually loved one another, that's the only way it worked, and even then, it almost didn't work. If they didn't have a kid they probably would have divorced.
My best friend never really had much of a dad growing up either - he was always gone.
He retired eventually and they're happy now.
Personally, I could never be with someone who's constantly gone.
