    Bedfords were first introduced to British India during World War II. This truck model and others similar to it stuck around, and since then they've been produced commercially throughout the country. But today, they’re not just functional and mundane - their paintings make them stand out.
    Colorful trucks aren’t rare in India, and their designs aren’t random. Artists that specialize in painting these trucks put a lot of thought into the art form, making the vehicles a spectacle of beauty in India.
    This Vox Borders episode looks at why truck art is such a staple in India.

      @@Dr0111 we call the boss(here the owner of the trucks) as "seth" with a "ji" which is added as a sign of respect. The drivers of the trucks are usually not the owners of the trucks itself rather a person appoints drivers to go across the country in their trucks on mostly their expenses(including the cost of the diesel). The quote simply means "Boss I have come and ur diesel gone" something like that but this rhymes in hindi...so it kinda adds to the comedic effect.

    Its probably mentioned else where in the comments but these really reminded me of narrow boat art in the UK. These people worked and lived in their boats and the art on them was an expression of their lives and a way to bring colour to an industrial landscape. Great job Johnny, going to enjoy this series.

    Right from the start of this video I thought "I wish we had something like this in America" but then i remembered how in the 80's we did have subway graffiti, but instead of encouraging the artists we criminalized them and that makes me sad

      graffiti isnt the same as the paintings on these trucks. These paintings are done by the rightful owners. India's metro railways arent painted like this. They have uniformed design and a section for advertisement which seperates itself from the design. NYC's subway is done on govt property and the graffiti was sprayed by spoiled brats and gangs who doesnt know how to respect public property.

    • @tamarlambert6121
      @tamarlambert6121 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      While it's true that it was state property they were drawing on, I think a better solution would have been to have state sanctioned graffiti events, where these kids would be allowed to decorate the cars with their designs, that way fewer people would have entered the prison system and perhaps a new graffiti art system would have been formed in the city creating a new tourist industry.

      @@tamarlambert6121 sorry bro but that would lead to undisciplined misuse of paints. Public property isnt for expressing your art. you should stay at home and draw or use your computer to express your ideas. or buy a vehicle and paint as you wish.

    • @tamarlambert6121
      @tamarlambert6121 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@goodmorningwhyyugei7668 there was already undisciplined use of paints, I dont think there's a causal link to an increase in property defacement since the city was already saturated by graffiti artists especially given that the city at that time had little to no art programs in the public schools these kids were attending at the time. Making a NYU metro graffiti art program as far as I can see would only eliminate a measurable chunk of the taggers, especially given the rules of graffiti tagging (no marking another person's most recent artwork)

      @@tamarlambert6121 just because there is doesnty mean we should promote it. What an owner does to his trucks is his choice. Subways and metros are govt properties. Indian metro doesnt have any such designs so your statement doesnt make sense. There are countless ways to express art. Respect public property.

    I've driven across Indian highways all my life and took for granted the colourful art on the countless trucks I've seen, so the fact that it would seem unusual to people never occurred to me.
    Great video, Johnny! I've followed the Borders series from the very beginning and I was a little anxious and apprehensive when you were going to make videos on my home country (simply because it's hard for people who don't live here to understand the complexity and nuances, and the context in which events play out here), but I have thoroughly enjoyed this entire series on India. Looking forward to the last episode!
