As a 49ers fan, this interview has me thinking about the current QB situation with Jimmy Garoppolo. Ever since the announcement of the trade, the same fans that were rooting for him in the beginning are now turning there back him left, and right. A lot of us didn’t learn our lesson from what we did to Alex Smith, instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt, we completely throw him under the bus. As 49ers fans we need to do better, I know, and I understand that it’s been tough for the past several years but no player like Jimmy G deserves the hate he’s been receiving. Give him the respect, appreciation, and most of all be careful what you wish for.
I talk about this all the time. Our fanbase has historically, since Steve Young, turned on our QBs in favor of who we want to be the next Joe Montana. It happened with Alex, Jimmy, probably going to happen to Purdy the second he makes a mistake. Our 49er fanbase is a young QBs nightmare lol

Would the 49ers have been better with Rodgers if he was drafted first instead of Smith even though the coaching staff at that time was horrible???
From a real chiefs fan you will always have my appreciation Alex you held it down and lead us until it was Cap & patty mahommes time and then you put your pride aside and mentored them youngins till it was theY time 💪🏾
Anybody still think we should have DRAFTED RODGERS after hearing this? With his personality type, he would of never made it on the 49ers during those dysfunctional years. Alex Smith is pure class.
I was laughing my ass off when people really thought Kap was a better option for the 49ers than Alex Smith. Say what you want about him checking down all the time but he got the job done with stability. KC were instantly Super Bowl hopefuls, and people forget the Skins were on top of the division before Alex Smith got hurt last year.
I've been a 9er fan since birth. I like Alex, but it's true. Kap was incredible, and there's no way we get to a SB with Smith. Hey Alex Smith is speaking the truth and as a 49er fan I completely understand where he's coming from I too was embarrassed of the home crowd booing our team like that nothing but respect to Alex
As a Seahawks season ticket holder I was so happy they got rid of Alex. Look at his career record versus the Hawks versus Krapernick and you'll know why.
I feel bad for this man his entire career he’s been compared to maybe the greatest quarterback ever in Aaron Rodgers. The 49ers screwed him over for Kapernick and the Chiefs dumped him for Maholmes. Right or wrong the dude deserves better considering he is much better then the game manager the so called experts tagged him with. The Redskins got a good one although they had one with Cousins.
Mitchell D Rodgers has every tool a quarterback has ever been given. He has only had a top ten defense maybe twice in his career. A GM that refused to go after any top notch free agents, and a coach that had hamstring this team for years. He has done more with less than any quarterback in history. Rodgers will easily go down as a top five when it’s over.
Saying he had a hard time vocalizing what he thought was wrong. It's difficult for him to make eye contact with the interviewer. Imagining him at 21, you could tell he wasnt ready
That game he's talking about made me an Alex Smith fan. He was booed and chewed out by the coach he went out there and fires 2 or 3 TD passes and almost won us the game. Dude is a fighter
Am I wrong or do you not post the full interview with Alex Smith? Only small clips? If so that's super frustrating, I'm not going to sit through 20 different clips! You literally have 20 different videos for him
Same here I always thought uh whatever alex Smith. Got picked over Rodgers in the draft hes overrated. But he was good just never had anything around him.
Amen, I was sceptical of Alex at first back in the day but later on in his career when the 9ers got more stability you could see how good he really was. Hats off for getting us through the worst period of 9ers history.
Alex is so damn underrated I was so happy when he was traded here and at that time I realized just how stupid the 49ers are to trade this guy and put kaep in center, I am still and always will be a huge fan of Alex, he can be inconsistent but he is also the only quarterback in history to march into belichicks Gillette stadium and leads an offense that put up that many scrimmage yards on them, after dealing with cassel and then hearing bandwagons and fairweather fans not knowing about that and hating on Alex, but he came here dealt with your bullshit and led this team to many playoff seasons, and how is it his fault when he doesn't have time in the pocket, in New England the line finally does so good and gives him time and what does he do? Give one of the best games of his career and I knew he could do it, I really hope he gets a ring with Kansas City, love them chiefs!
Smith was disrespected not only by the coaches, but by the organization in entirety. They never gave him the respect he deserved and they wish they could have a qb even remotely close to his ability.
Rod Manhammer If Superbowl wins are your only standard for success you're going to be disappointed 99 percent of your football life unless your a Pats fan. Will Alex ever win a Superbowl? No, probably not. Will he win a lot of games and get his team to the post season? Absolutely.
" If Superbowl wins are your only standard for success you're going to be disappointed 99 percent of your football life". Tell that to those 22 men on the field.
Alex Smith is a great Game Manager. He won't throw interceptions and can protect a lead. But if you're trailing in the 4th quarter, he isn't going to be your guy. He won't lose a game for you but he won't win one either.

Am I wrong or do you not post the full interview with Alex Smith? Only small clips? If so that's super frustrating, I'm not going to sit through 20 different clips! You literally have 20 different videos for him
Tough interview.. I think different of him after watching this.
Same here I always thought uh whatever alex Smith. Got picked over Rodgers in the draft hes overrated. But he was good just never had anything around him.
Aulorenzo war eagle!!
You were not the QB of the future because you are not black, that is all that matters these days.
Amen, I was sceptical of Alex at first back in the day but later on in his career when the 9ers got more stability you could see how good he really was. Hats off for getting us through the worst period of 9ers history.
As a Niner fan I never felt confident when Alex Smith dropped back to pass. Bottom line.
The checkdown king
No coaches did either. I feel a billion times more confident with Jimmy G drops back.
Thank you, people saying it was the coaches..but Alex did not have the tools to throw into small windows.
@187 Macabee easy to see from my couch too
@187 Macabee easy analysis for anyone
This guy is a class act and inspiration.
Uhh yeah uhh yeah uhh yeah. Well spoken
Good enough to get his teams to the playoffs, but now just a footnote to both the 49ers and Chiefs after they got their franchise quarterbacks.
Geoff Jacobs the jury is still out on whether or not Jimmy Garropolo is a franchise quarterback
Great quality human being. Rooting for him
Alex is so damn underrated I was so happy when he was traded here and at that time I realized just how stupid the 49ers are to trade this guy and put kaep in center, I am still and always will be a huge fan of Alex, he can be inconsistent but he is also the only quarterback in history to march into belichicks Gillette stadium and leads an offense that put up that many scrimmage yards on them, after dealing with cassel and then hearing bandwagons and fairweather fans not knowing about that and hating on Alex, but he came here dealt with your bullshit and led this team to many playoff seasons, and how is it his fault when he doesn't have time in the pocket, in New England the line finally does so good and gives him time and what does he do? Give one of the best games of his career and I knew he could do it, I really hope he gets a ring with Kansas City, love them chiefs!
walter jr came prepared with his note cards
We could have had Aaron Rogers.
As a 49ers fan, this is 100% accurate. This is not him “bad-mouthing” the organization or the fans, this is the truth.
As a faithful 49er fan since 1988 this is hard to watch. 9er fans need to step up more and support our team.
Smith was disrespected not only by the coaches, but by the organization in entirety. They never gave him the respect he deserved and they wish they could have a qb even remotely close to his ability.
If they kept Alex smith with that 2010-2012 teams they would have at least 2 championships. But hey Kaepernick was the right guy
Kobe Kieu Exactly. Harbaugh's BIGGEST mistake was dropping proven winner Alex.
When given the chance to win a championship, Alex Smith choked completing 12 out of 26 passes.
No! You just couldn’t play
"yeah yeah!" "Yeah!" "Yeah!". You can still hear the bro in him when he says "yeah!"
Man not everybody thought that. I'm still shaking my head over them trading to chiefs.
Kyle Turnbull I mean niners got jimmy G and chiefs has mahomes I mean both ended up winning
Get Peyton Manning to get on 🤙🏼 Come On Graham 🙏🏼
Uly ByNature Drew Brees should come on too.
190 TDs, 100INT's..94 WINS with 60 LOSES 64% completion rate...Alez my friend youve had a good career bud..ty for playing
Jerry rice was right simple as that
Alex Smith is a great Game Manager. He won't throw interceptions and can protect a lead. But if you're trailing in the 4th quarter, he isn't going to be your guy. He won't lose a game for you but he won't win one either.
It wasn’t his fault the org at the time was run poorly and the culture sucked
You should have 10 mil subs graham!! Keep at it
Hopefully one day!
We ain't been shit since Mariucci.Harbaugh walked into the best defense in the league and re tooled up and coming offense.Alex we miss you.All you've done since leaving is win.Heres to your future success brother.
I'm a diehard diehard diehard 49eres fan thank you Alex smith. Thank you for all your hard work it was all for nothing it hurt me to see you go and alot of us thank you.
Pretty amazing how badly an entire organization can go down the tubes. Just amazing.
Alex seems like a hard working decent fella.
Debartolo Walsh Montana Lott Clark
Those were the days
And then he ends up in an even more dysfunctional organization in the Redskins 😂
Graham ...great interview
Thanks!
great candid stuff....your welcome
Alex is such a great guy. I appreciate all that he did for the 49ers, anyone else wouldn’t have found a way to eventually find success. It’s a shame the way it all went down.
Alex is a great dude he will allways have a home in KC
Alex Smith deserved so much better. If he would have had stability and a proper offensive coach his career would have been so much more impressive.
This interview reminds me of a scene from “Private Ryan” when the troops are discussing traumatic combat.
As a 49 fan thanks Alex for all u did once again thanks
I always liked Alex Smith honestly. Not a disrespect to Kap. I really like both of them. Team has just been crap.
This such a good interview
This is a good example of when fans booo it’s more disgusting then what it’s let off to be..
Man...we was always so lucky we got a great human to represent us for so long. Sorry we messed you up so bad dude
