Imagine if Young beat the Cowboys in the '93 NFC championship game and Montana beat the bills in the '93 AFC championship. A Super Bowl match up between those two would have been a legendary. Those are the kind of things you see in movies lol
Heh, even Troy Aikman said in a Sports Illustrated interview that he would've LOVED to see that matchup. Of course, Troy wasn't going to allow it to happen since it was his Cowboys playing the 49ers that day.
both the Chiefs and the 49ers got the beat down neither game was even close, which was a shame because nobody wanted to see another bills vs Cowboys superbowl unless you were a fan of either team.
Yup those are the things that movies are made out of, or Super Bowl 48 when brother vs brother for the title.
Classic if it would of happened in the Superbowl and funny that the year that they did play 49ers went on to win the Superbowl same yr
Anthony Apodaca: Man, I think of that all the time - and I'm a Dallas fan!! Honestly, I would have loved to have seen that match-up. Who do you think would have won? I think the 49ers would have prevailed. That's just me though.
Getting chills after the Chiefs and 49ers made the Super Bowl.
Man me too
I'm guessing Montana is going to do the coin toss
@@Alex-fx5es he guarantees his team will win
@@Alex-fx5es He should

God the giants defensive line over the years have ended more quarterback careers than the Cleveland browns.
Lol
Got me over here lmao at this comment but at the same time ain’t it the god damm truth
Jakerton97 _ not even close, Nobody will ever end careers like the Browns have
Vencil Webb especially there own careers
New York has the money and access to all the drugs
I wonder how many penalties would be in this game with today's rules? Also R.I.P. Derrick Thomas.
They would have had a hard time getting through the whole game lollol i miss the old NFL helmet to helmet , hard hitting , smash mouth football. I know it's to protect and to try to preserve the players health , but football just isn't the same as it was back then. Dispite all the new rules now , i still love football. WHO DEY !!!!!!!
Almost every play
NOTICE for as big as john madden is, do you ever see this guy around the NFL, like ever? you never see his ass on NFL broadcasts or even in public, think about that, that's extremely odd...
Derrick Thomas was a bad bad man rip😭😭
Derrick was on record as saying he always tried to bring down the quarterback as gently as possible. He was a very gentle soul.
Brings me back to playing Joe Montana '94 Football on Sega Genesis😍 This is true nostalgia👏👏👏
I played the hell outta that game
Good memories
Hearing John Madden and Pat Summerall doing the commentary on this video makes it just that much epic then it already was.
'than', not 'then'
Montana is the GOAT. He played in a time when defense existed.
I really miss Derrick Thomas. He's the reason why I became a chiefs fan. I have still never seen a guy anywhere that could get off the line of scrimmage like DT. My favorite memory is probably when he called the safety pre snap, and then went and got it.
Neil Smith was pretty good too.
Him and lawrence taylor were the best of all time.
i truly believe had montana played another year for the chiefs they would have gone to the superbowl
That Kansas City Defense was flying.
I'm a hardcore Elway fan, and I can attest, there were games when Thomas was almost like part of his uniform...basically on him the entire game. He was relentless, and such a phenomenal talent. In fact, I always felt that going to Kansas City once a year was good for Elway. No other place in the league would get a quarterback battle hardened like Arrowhead back in the early 90's...between the noise, and that pass rush....it was an unreal environment...
Wish football was still played like this today.
Montana threw one of th most vintage beautiful passes ever in that game. I think it was in the 3rd quarter. Even Pat summeral said during the broadcast that that was vintage Montana. I did a presentation in collage on that pass showing the class how to throw a football perfectly & broke down every angle of the throw. I got an A on the project too.
AT 10 years old, these years were my favorite years as a KC fan. Derrick Thomas was a beast, and he was such a huge loss, not only for the Chiefs, but for the world.
I bet the current year is your favorite now.
for the world .. let{s not get carried away lol

Even after Montana left San Fran, the place was still his town and people still called the Niners his team. For a long time Young had to play with the comparisons to Montana.
"Joe wouldn't have made that mistake" or whatever.
Young didn't have the love of the fans, he had to fight tooth and nail to get that. I respect Young because of that phase of his starting career, dude played like he always had something to prove. But still... S.F. was Joe's town. It literally took Young to win the '94 Super Bowl to remove any doubt about him.
Rip Derrick Thomas
Thee absolute single best linebacker that ever played the game of football - period!
@@judahsoremy9857 You forget about LT?
@@JackRule16 No, I sure didn't. Lawrence Taylor was not a better linebacker.
@@judahsoremy9857 LT was unquestionably the best to ever do it
Only if the Chiefs had this defense as today they would of won the SB!
Derrick always showed up when it really mattered. Always will be my favorite player. 58.
This was a great game! One of my favorite games and showed that Montana still had some magic. I dunno if we'll see a feature that has to do with the '94 MNF game against the Broncos but that was at once thrilling but kind of sad because by that point in the season Montana was totally beat to hell and it was painful to watch him just throw the ball.
That was the game that really proved more than anything that the Clutchness of Joe Cool was not of this earth and he was everything people said he was without a Walsh, a Rice, etc.. He and Elway (the king of 4th Quarter comebacks) were going back and forth throughout the 4th quarter of that game and just when you thought it was over after Elway had rushed in a td, there was still 1:22 left in the game. Chiefs need a td to win it, nothing else comes close and he has half the time to do it in as compared to the drive he led in Superbowl 23! I still refer to that MNF game as one of the greatest football games ever played.
I totally agree with you and as further proof that Joe didn't need Walsh or Rice just look at the '93 playoffs where he had two great performances. If the Bills had lost to him in the AFC Championship that year I wouldn't have minded. Sadly the way he got knocked around that game was the nail in the coffin in a lot of ways as from that point on he was more physically fragile than he was before.
The Sentinel: Well said.
SPTO: Great points!
SPTO kind of reminds me of Mahomes vs Garrapolo. The next Montana and Steve Young.
R.I.P. Derrick Thomas!!!🏈🏈🏈❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🌹🌹🌹✊✊✊
This deserves an Oscar.
As a lifelong niner fan, this game was epic and a surreal experience.
Great game with great players. But Derrick Thomas was something else!
Brandon Moore he was the best believe me this
He was the difference maker in this one. Loved watching all of these guys.
25 years later they meet in super bowl 54
@Ryan Irwin- Diehl this is 25-26 years before

And they meet again in 2 weeks
Troy Aikman said if his Cowboys faced Montana, the ;9ers would have beat the Cowboys.

Joe Montana was in a class by him self, period
The fact that Joe Montana's backup ended up winning 2 league MVPs and won his team a Super Bowl is crazy.
Aaron Rodgers did the same thing behind Brett Favre. It happens if the team is good enough.
@@BloodFromSpain and plus, being behind the best for so long gives you an edge
yeah but only 1 sb win
I fact is happened to SF again this year
Trey Lance started 2 games than got injured early in week 2 and his year was over than Jimmy Garoppolo had a career yeae but his season was cut short in week 13 due to an arm injury
Than came Brook Purdy the last pick of the draft and in his first start he outplayed Brady and the Bucs handidly and has led SF TO THE 2 SEED and div round corrently and has not lost a single start. Purdy could be the next Montans in SF with his dream start
I think it’s more crazy the 49ers sat a 4 time Super Bowl champion for his backup and constantly was worried about making his backup unhappy. Injuries probably didn’t help but Montana should have been on the 49ers till the end and we should have seen what we could have done with Rice in the 90’s. Young should have been traded or remained the backup. At least that would have been the right thing to do. But who knows how it would have played out. One of the weirdest things in sports history that Montana lost his job in the weirdest way possible after being a perfect Super Bowl Qb for 4 Superbowls!!!
YOUNG showed his 4.4 speed on that scramble vs Rams
Young probably had 4.5 to 4.6 speed at best but the entire league was just slower and worse over all, he would probably make it today but it would not be primarily because of his athleticism that's for sure
Just looked it up and he ran the 40 in 4.55 sec (damn I'm good #tape god)
@@JackRule16 4.55 is fast even by today's standards for a QB. Russel Wilson has 4.55 and cam ran a 4.59. In today's NFL Steve young would be one of the fastest QBs in the league
@@JackRule16 in fact Steve young would have been the 2nd fastest QB in the league over the last several years and would have dropped to third just this year when Lamar Jackson was drafted. Only Lamar and Mariota have a faster 40 time than 4.55
@@jimmorrison9287 There's also something to be said about game speed vs 40-yard dash time. Almost certainly Russell Wilson is faster than Young on a football field. Cam is special because of his size, not his speed. You are right that Young would succeed even in today's NFL but he wouldn't be outrunning today's linebackers to the edge
Pat Summerall and John Madden are the best.
Indioprophecy81 Yes they are just by the tone of their voices it always seems like a big game
I never appreciated them at the time but I sure miss them now, Summerrall in particular. Plus they had great chemistry and could be quite funny at times.
@@bobross1550 Summerall, but Madden talked in cliches and generalities, not giving much useful detail about the game as, say, Romo does now.
I agree, best commentators ever! Nobody today can top these guys.

I still remember Pat Summerall saying "and the Miller Lite player of the game is Joe Montana" as the Chiefs were running down the tunnel at Arrowhead.
...and then Summerall downed a Miller Lite

Steve Young was a beast. Extremely athletic and could take a beating. Very few QBs in today's league could survive the way he did
In my opinion, Steve Young has the best season ever as an NFL QB. He could run and throw. If he had stayed in Tampa he would have been considered a bust. Sitting behind Montana raised his mental game and they peaked at the same time.
teejay Trujillo we are experiencing this right now too with Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo

Wasn’t that the time to be an NFL fan? No politics. No charities. Just fun. We won’t see anything like this again.
charities are good though i agree with the rest
Whats wrong with charities?
NFL just keeps getting involved with too much drama. When they learn to avoid it they’ll become great again.
NFL players kneeling
Donald Trump calling players bitches
Colin Kaepernick nonsense
Nike commercial drama
NFL fans burning Nike shoes
Gay cheerleaders on Saints cheerleading team
New QB roughing the passer rule
Saints vs Rams no call
Horrible flags all season
Patriots going to another Super Bowl
Celebs and rappers refusing to do halftime show (kneeling drama)
And much more...
When the NFL learns to mind their own business and handle situations correctly they’ll be a better organization. I’m ok with the kneeling but most of the other fans would beg to differ. Instead of supporting the kneeling ON the field just make them sit in the locker rooms during the National Anthem. Offer a deal to Kaepernick to play on an NFL team but only if he promises to sit in the locker room during the National Anthem. Don’t try and ban the Nike commercial. Don’t put male cheerleaders on ANY NFL team. Change the QB rule. Get better referees. Replay certain plays to see if it was a flag or not. And get better celebs to do a fucking half time show. The NFL handles situations poorly. Why can’t they be like the NBA and let their players have fun?
Players used to do charity but behind close doors basically...when football was back players focused on football and when the off season came thats when players did charities...and theres nothing wrong with given back to the community blah blah blah but the way NFL does it now? Its bullshit the only do it to make money off of charity they really don't give a shit
I hope the players kneel forever and you continue to get triggered.
Great job on putting this together. Great commentary/voice.
I so remember that game. The boot leg Young attempted into the end zone was called out by Schottenheimer drawing an 8 on his chest and signaling boot leg to DT before the snap. What a game!
Now the best backup qb performance young on Monday night. He through with long accuracy, ran like a dear
Joe Montana will always be my favorite QB. Was a huge fan of the 49er's during that time. Montana, Rice, Ronnie Lott, Roger Craig were some memorable players.
I never really cared much for Steve Young even though he was a great QB as well. The fact that he replaced Montana never sat well with me. I get why the 49er's went that direction, but to me it was always a slap in the face to Montana. He won them 4 Superbowls and was still capable of playing at a top level.
I very much wanted Montana to win a Superbowl with the Chiefs. At least he beat Steve Young during the regular season.
It was Steve youngs time.....2 mvps...and a Superbowl....and set highest qbr of that time
Respectfully, you don’t sound like a true Niners fan. Young was equally as good as Joe👍
And now this is the Super Bowl 54 matchup.
Can't pass by without referring to DT.
My god his speed off the edge!!
Thanks for the memories 58. RIP.
DT taking over like he does.
What a great era of football. Defense's we're aloud to play defense. Offense was being dominated by the west coast and no huddle style. Great channel man 👍
Growing up as 49ers fan I forgot how they quickly just gave up on Montana to go with young. Which is imo was similar on how the 9ers gave up on Smith to go with kapernick.
i don't think it was quick at all... montana was coming back after almost 2 years ('91, '92) away from the game due to injury... he only played 2 more seasons at the age of 37 and 38 and had ok (by his standards) stats/QB rating... the transition had to be made for the next QB (Young) for the sake of the franchise.. even Bill Walsh believed you'd rather get rid of even your star players 2 years too early instead of 2 years too late...
@@jegca after reading my comment I think me saying they gave up on Joe is wrong. Joe could of easily won that sb in 94. No knock on Steve and I just felt on the surface . Smith at the time had the highest qb rating gets injured mid season at gets replaced with a rookie QB. Smith had earned the right to go to the sb that year. Even though very different it just made me think of that. Personally I don't disagree with Walsh bc young was amazing.

This is why, to me, Brady will never be considered on the level of Montana. Joe was just electrifying. And Brady never in his career has had to take the kinds of hits that Joe took. Yea Brady has two more rings, but the struggle for a qb today is far less than it used to be. And Montana’s playoff numbers are just so off the charts they’ll never be replicated.
R.I.P. Derrick Thomas #58, one of my favorite players.
Joe Montana and Jerry Rice Forever 2019 and more years
Madden and Summeral. Legendary.
I was lucky enough to see Joe's first come back win with the Chiefs after his injury. It was in San Diego against the Chargers, and he got the ball back with about 1:50 left in the game, my friend and I looked at each other with big eyes and just started grinning. Sure enough he led them down the field and won the game with Marcus Allen on a draw play for a touchdown. What a moment, I'll never forget that game, that drive, or that moment in time. I loved watching Joe play, he just looked like poetry in motion, the way he moved was so smooth, no one looked like him, and he didn't even have a huge arm either, he did it with his brain.
As far as the "battle" of who is better is b/t Montana & Young let's just say this. Whenever the discussion of the GOAT QB is concerned, I *NEVER* hear Steve Young's name mentioned.
Troy Staunton Would you have to understand is a lot of quarterbacks thrived in that system. Even Steve Bono managed to look like a superstar. Young showed his true colors when he was a quarterback in Tampa Bay. Had Montana stayed with San Francisco as good as they were in the 90s, I think they would’ve won a couple of more Super Bowls
And rightly so. He's a great, NOT an all-time great.

Great video!.. Very nice touch by mentioning Derek Thomas at the end!! I remember watching this game as a kid .. and what stuck out was how DT dominated it
Super Bowl 54!
I remember this. Wasn't very memorable. For me, the thing was: Montana, when he didn't do 3/5 step drop, lighting fast plays (or play-actions), used to roll out of the pockets (side line to side line) and throw athletic perfect passes without ever setting his feet and seemed to be unstoppable, up until that hit in 1990. But, by now, he looked like he was playing in slow motion and watching him play you couldn't help thinking: "I hope he doesn't get killed", because he was so vulnerable, from injuries, and didn't have that mobility that made him such an effective operator before. He was originally actually more mobile than Young ever was, and was also a runner, albeit not as good a runner as Young.
damn i really wished we got a Montana led chiefs vs Young led 49ers SB
My entire family tree was from SF and the Niners were gods to us and everyone else in the City back in those days. My mom always said Steve was the future as soon as he was on the team and she was team Young for sure in the fued. Her sisters and brother were so hurt by the niners trading Joe that they became Chiefs fans and literally did not talk to my mom for months after the trade happened. I have a friend who loved Montana and switched teams to the Chiefs. He is still a die hard chiefs fan to this day and flies to KC every year to watch "home games". After this game the following Monday, my PE teacher literally spent the class talking about the game with the students the entire time. That's how big Joe vs. Steve was back then.
Man, looking back, Steve Young should have more super bowl victories.

Nice to see the Goat playing against Steve Young. We may never see another QB on the same caliber as Joe Montana.
@Ret1173 Problem with that comment is you must have gotten momentary amnesia .. Brady took his first snap in 2001 and won 3 Super Bowls between then and 2004 *Twice Super Bowl MVP* There were no rules protecting the QB back then either. Hell Brady missed a whole season because of a late hit. If Montana had the quick release and cognitive understanding of the game like Brady did maybe he would have remained healthy (in his *NON* salary cap era) and not washed up by age 36 where he was basically a nobody in K.C -- did i mention *NON* salary cap era where the 49ers always had the highest payroll in the league??
@Ret1173 I'll remind you of this - there are about 100 legitimate web sites on the net that you can *google* that list the greatest Quarterback of all time and i have yet to find one that has Montana over Brady as the greatest ever. The point you were initially trying to make in an insidious way is that Montana is better than Brady. So many of these sites are based on opinions from the NFL's top writers, coaches, players, football historians and have *impeccable reputations* Secondly you don't know *JACK SHIT* about what's allowed Brady to play as long as he has. There's dozens of variables why he lasted so long (his diet and his 3 hour a day yoga routine among 2 of dozens) not to mention today's players are bigger and faster than ever before. In Joe's era they had one camera to study him, nowadays' they have 10 coaches and 20 scouts along with every bit of technology available to combat Brady's greatest *all to no avail* Brady has done it all over the years with a revolving door of players *72 different players have caught a TD pass from Brady (NFL record by far)* Hell if Brady had Jerry Rice for 8 years he would have all 9 Super Bowl *rings* he appeared in.
now go find me a site that list Joe ahead of Brady -- i'll start you off with one www.si.com/nfl/2017/10/27/nfl-top-10-quarterbacks-tom-brady-joe-montana-john-elway
*Good Luck*
@Ret1173 And i am still waiting for you to find 1 web site that lists Montana ahead of Brady in *Greatest QB's ever* hey pal time to change your name..yer credibility went down the drain
@Ret1173 There's over 100 web sites that you can google "Greatest QB's of all time" Many with impeccable reputations - best football writers, former hall of fame coaches and players as contributors and i have yet to find one that has Montana over Brady. So pal you must be the premiere God of football knowledge *i bow to you* because you apparently know more than anyone else. All i know is when a team is down 28-3 in the Super Bowl with 21 minutes left there's no way Montana is going to go for (at one point in the third quarter) 15/15 and 212 yards *NFL RECORD* plus executing 2-2 point conversions to boot. Hell Brady was washed up this year and in the team's first playoff game against San Diego he leads The Pats to 4 TD's on the first 4 possessions *NFL RECORD* Hey champ get back to me when you find someone who says Montana is better than Brady.
Goat 🐐Tom Brady
07:47 Young is so lucky his knees didn’t get destroyed on that play.
His legs were too strong for that.
damn steve could really move back in the day.
Montana is STILL the 🐐 hand me dubs
L
W
W🐐
Me too......Montana and Unitas are the greatest QBs ever to play!!!
Compare Montana's passer ratings compared to his peers in both regular season and the playoffs. Do the same with Brady. Then you tell me whether it's an "L" or not. Be objective.
Wish they both went to the sb in 93
Montana is the greatest of all time. He made the 49ers a dynasty.
Young was good, but Young was not a clutch quarterback.
Montana played in a much tougher era.
Montana was the best clutch quarterback ever.
Disagree with the statement Young wasn’t clutch. His game winning pass you Owens in the ‘98 wildcard game was proof enough. I think he dealt with a lot of unfortunate events - Losing Shanahan as OC, losing Rickey Waters. Not to mention Seifert wasn’t nearly the coach that Walsh was. By the time Young has to retire from the concussions, the Niners were basically an expansion team with no talent.
One game though, Andrew. I agree with Battlestarmarc. I take Montana in the clutch over Steve Young in a heartbeat. Taking nothing away from Young's greatness, I just think Montana was better.
Battlestarmarc correction to your statement, Young was very clutch just not as clutch as Joe, I think you need to do more research on Steve's career to truly appreciate what a legendary player he was
@@perezfinichames what about the Vikings run? The sb where he threw 6tds and had the most yards, what about the game where he finally beat the cowboys, what about the game where he took young Peyton Manning to school, in terms of talent he was a top 10 qb of all time but it's a Shame that his short career as a starter prevents him to take that spot , and btw he was very clutch, just not as much as Joe Montana
You’re either high, drunk, or just not too bright saying that Young wasn’t clutch.
