  • QB Alex Smith looks back on the 2012 season with the 49ers, in which he eventually lost the starting job to Colin Kaepernick - who proceeded to help the team advance to Super Bowl XLVII. Smith talks of how difficult it was to watch Kaepernick play well and gives his take on what he would have done if in Coach Jim Harbaugh’s position.

    • @Palrath1
      @Palrath1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not really, Alex Smith would've had ANOTHER HC and Offensive coordinator and system to learn. Smith NEVER had consistency with the 49ers and would've continued to struggle. I believe the 49ers management/coaching really robbed Smith of a HoF career. Look at him right now in the 2017 season. He looks like the best qb in the league! Right now to date through 7 games.... Alex Smith's stats are 72% accuracy, 15:0 TD:INT, 120.5 QBR, 1,979 Throwing yards.... He's looking like the 2017 NFL MVP right now because he's had consistency. I thoroughly believe that if Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees went to SF. They'd have similar careers to Alex Smith. The man was robbed and he's such a nice and humble team player always deferring credit to teammates and coaches.

    I do think Joe Staley took the move really harshly. He saw what Alex had gone through during the Nolan and Singletary years, and for it to end like that didn't sit well with him. I'm in the same boat. I loved having Harbaugh in SF, but that move never sat right. Alex was our guy. I'll always be a fan of his, wherever he is.

      Colin was a way better player at the time though.I think on a personal level Colin is an idiot but at the time he gave SF a better chance to win.
      It doesnt matter if it doesnt sit well with Smith or Staley a smart gm will replace a player with someone better.
      Saying Alex was our guy just sounds stupid when there was many better QBs at that time.

    • @hooktonfonniks
      @hooktonfonniks 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      All speculation at this point, but I'm not convinced Krapernick gave the Niners a better chance at winning. Things were going well that year even before Smith's injury. The year prior, he out-dueled Drew Brees in the playoffs and was two Kyle Williams fumbles away from a Super Bowl. Just my $0.02; happy to agree to disagree.

      DaQuan Cunningham
      Why wouldn’t he have been able to led the 49ers to the Super Bowl? What makes you think that? Here’s some facts for you. In 2011, Alex Smith led the 49ers to a 13-3 record in the regular season and made it to the NFC Championship game, where if not for two Kyle Williams bonehead fumbles they would’ve won that game and yes made it to the Super Bowl. So that in itself blows up your entire argument. But there’s more, the next year he led the 49ers to a 6-2 record before getting hurt and ultimately losing the job to Kaepernick. He threw for 1737 yards and 13 TDs to 5 INTS, well on his way to surpassing his stats from the previous season. Remember the season where almost he got the team to the Super Bowl. Smith also beat the Packers and the Seahawks, the same Seahawks Kaepernick lost to that same season. So I don’t know how you figure that Alex couldn’t get the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

    Great story. Tough spot to be in, playing the best football of your career, and an injury knocks you out for 2-3 games, and another guy takes your job, playing as good or better than you. In the NFL, you are one game, or injury, away from a permanent seat on the bench. No pressure.

  • @Shakester71
    @Shakester71 7 ปีที่แล้ว +160

    Benching Smith was the beginning of the end for Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh was bent on showing off his draft pick, Colin Kaepernick, that he just couldn't wait. When Alex Smith was healthy, he should have gotten his starting job back. He was basically benched for going 19-5 in regular season games which was just ridiculous. If Smith remained the starter and failed to reach the SB or got them to the SB and lost, then switching to Kaepernick the following season would have been justified. Harbaugh then tried to turn Kaepernick into Alex Smith. He wanted Kaepernick to sit in the pocket, go through reads and check it down. Unfortunately for Harbaugh, Kaepernick is incapable of doing either. He can't read defenses. He can't go through his reads and he has zero touch on short passes. Those are still issues with Kaepernick today and aside from his protest, his lack of football knowledge is whats keeping him out of the game. After Alex left, he's had a much better career than Kaepernick and Alex Smith didn't have Crabtree, Anquan Boldin or Vernon Davis.
    2013
    Alex Smith - 3313 yards, 23 TDs, 7 INTs, 60.6% completion, 89.1 QBR, 431 rushing yards
    Colin Kaepernick - 3197 yards, 21 TDs, 8 INTs, 58.4% completion, 91.6 QBR, 524 rushing yards

    • @spookyshark29
      @spookyshark29 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Last year he was way better than expected he went through his reads and recognize coverages while making short accurate passes in between defenders he's way better than 2013.

    • @Shakester71
      @Shakester71 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Travis Donald Stanley The SB was further proof that Harbaugh wanted to prove that he was right with Kaepernick. He wanted to be the guy that drafted the player that helped them win a championship. He wanted that so much that he put the game in Colin's hands 3 times, and he failed each time. Kaepernick looked to only his first read, which was Crabtree, all 3 times. He didn't even look anywhere else. If he did, he would have saw Delani Walker get open for an easy TD on the 3rd down play. Instead, the ball didn't even get into the end zone on that pass. And on the final play, at least make an attempt. With the game on the line, and pressure in his face, his decision was to throw it out of bounds through the end zone.

    • @spookyshark29
      @spookyshark29 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Poor Play calling.

    • @Shakester71
      @Shakester71 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Exactly and the play was for Kaepernick to throw the ball after Frank Gore just had a 33 yard run. Then they ran it with LaMichael James on first down. I would have given that ball to Gore. But if you think Roman calls the plays, then you're mistaken. Harbaugh was calling the plays to Roman who relays it to Colin's helmet. If they had a capable QB in there, then it was absolutely the best calls. I think Alex Smith would have seen Delani Walker on that one play for the TD. What Smith does well is pre snap reads and when you're on the 7 yard line, it critical to have an idea of what a defense is doing. Colin does ZERO pre-snap reading. Thats why the Cardinals left all his receivers open and he still handed the ball off.

    I used to be upset with Alex Smith the first several years... even saying that he had still been one of the better QB's the Chiefs have had. Then in 2015 I wised up and realized Alex Smith is far better then 90% of the QB's in the league. sure you can be a fan of another team and disagree with that comment. but you would be ignorant. truth is Alex Smith is excellent. If you know the history of the Chiefs under Alex Smith you would know the Chiefs really have not had the remaining cards to fill the deck for Alex to be what he really is... Alex Smith is far from done. and I hope He stays here in Kansas City and completes his agenda. Sure there is always a time when you get older that it is time for the next round of players... I hope Mahomes sits and learns and is not thrown in like Alex was and has a chance to develop under Andy and Alex. the Chiefs in my opinion have the weapons now and I believe this year we will see an explosive Alex and Co. :) If not I am still happy Alex has been our QB and very proud of him.
    Thank you Alex for being you...

      Make no doubt about it the Niners brass in the front office were a total dysfunctional and when they decided to go with Colin Kaepernick the rest of the way and you know what happen in that final drive that cost the Niners their sixith Super Bowl and Harbaugh is just as guilty as well for his questionable play calling and off and not able to get plays off consistently and that decable on Thanksgiving night three years ago against the Seahawks when Jed York tweeted that quote "Tonight's performance was NOT ACCEPTABLE" and your's truly was at the game and only winning only once in theit final five games plus the departure of Harbaugh is where the state of the franchise now.

I knew back then that Harbaugh had made a terrible mistake by keeping Alex in the bench (once he healed) because I knew that the trust in the locker room would be compromised. Harbaugh made a mistake that tore the team apart, there's no loyalty even justified by performance when Alex was playing at a super high level, most of the veterans left or retired. Yes they made it to the sb but they might have done it with Alex given how stout that defense was. Willis and Cowboy battled through injuries, Harbaugh was all rah-rah but when you can cast aside a QB playing his best ball who's been with the team through it all, that facade is finished.

    Kap displayed weapons that no one had seen before and it took awhile for teams to adjust. Once they did, however, Kap didn’t have the intestinal fortitude to fight through that frustration, and became a very ordinary QB. Considering what this man endured during his first 5 years in the NFL, i.e. playing for 2 head coaches who were totally clueless regarding QB development, the fact that he is playing the position as well as he does is testament to his perseverance and character. Contrary to popular belief, he has a gun for an arm. He just doesn't use it by throwing downfield because he's conditioned himself to not making mistakes -- a survival habit that he had to develop in SF. If he plays in the play-offs like he did against the Pats (throwing accurate long balls), KC may prove to be this year's sleeper. I hope so. Always admired this guy. And remember, he's the QB that made Urban Meyer an offensive wizard.

    Fuck, I wish he was still on the 9ers. I know he wouldnt have stayed, but that duo of Kaep and Smith was amazing.

      If Mohomes or whatever his name is wins the starting job, I wouldn't be surprised if he returned to SF. Would be a great paring with Shanny

    The same thing is about to happen to him in Kansas City I fear, after their playoff loss to Tennessee, even though that loss wasn't his fault, and he led the league in passer rating and may get some MVP votes, he'll still get enough of the blame. With Mahomes drafted high, Alex will likely be shipped to Arizona, NYJ, Buffalo, Cleveland, etc. Mahomes has talent and will make some exciting plays, but it won't surprise me if KC then falls back to an 8-8 team with Alex gone, and dismiss it as "development".
