Mario and Zelda are also afforded the biggest budgets in Nintendo and the creative teams are given a lot of leeway in what they can create. I'd rather see them making new stuff like Wonder and Odyssey than remaking old games like 64 and Super Mario Kart imo.
Let's be fair though, Mario Oddysee is a masterpiece, no one, and I mean no one can still make a finished day 1 masterpiece like Nintendo still can, though, "A Hat in Time" was pretty amazing too, so is Yooka-Laylee while I'm at it, one of the most under-rated games there is, people slated it because it felt like a Banjo-Kazzoie game lol, as if that was a bad thing.
Doing anything to any Nintendo property is painting a target on your back... I'm pretty sure they're aware of it. It's only that they love the games enough to not care.
10:58 i wish they had kept the feather and the hearts. Imagine if someone made another Metroid 2 remake and they removed the big shoulder pads that were introduced because the game boy didn't have color
I really wish 3D all-stars included the DS version of SM64 and Galaxy 2; especially 64 DS because that one's such an upgrade to the original game, and with better controls I believe it'd be much more recognized in the community!
Nintendo will ignore every creation of the fans because they not need more effort to get money, an Nintendo fan is the same as Apple fans they will buy everything with Nintendo/Apple brand on it, even when is the same product. Greeting Shane
I really don't understand why nintendo won't properly remaster all stars or some of the other 2d mario games like new super mario bros for the ds which hasn't been rereleased since. What i think makes it worse is the fact with super mario bros wonder they could easily use techniques they used for that games artstyle to enhance and recreate some of the older mario games artstyles like super mario world.
Always happy to see a Rerez video. Thanks Shane, thanks Adam, and THANK YOU ROBIN!!! I honestly love the channel as well as my son, and wish you all the best
Finally! Back to the older style of videos! I love the Just Bad Games, but this type of content was what I loved to see in your Prime Time. I love to see this so much!
Actually, All-Stars really was quite literally a collection of simple ports. It was translated to the SFC's instruction set, but with the console being nearly 1:1 backwards-compatible, few alterations were made to the code. The sound engine is obviously completely new, and there were likely some modifications to the picture pipeline to account for the updated graphics, but the code underneath that drives the games' logic is identical save for a few bug fixes. And yes, that means there are four game engines on the cartridge (five with SMW), plus the frontend.
4:05 they did not lock players out from playing the game, they only locked out players from buying the game. You can still play the game if you have the physical or digital download.
All of these fan projects look amazing. I really like how GameBoy games look in color and how SNES games appear in widescreen. I don't know how many more SNES games have been modified to run in widescreen. I did some research and found out that Super Metroid, Zelda Link to the Past, and F-Zero have widescreen mods, but I would love to see other games in widescreen too. 2D games like Donkey Kong Country, Yoshi's Island, Kirby Super Star, or imagine Star Fox in high resolution and widescreen, since it uses 3D models. I really like how someone has recreated all of the models for Mario Kart 64 as closely as possible to make high-resolution sprites. They could have just used AI upscaling, which wouldn't look as good. I also really like that someone is remaking Super Mario 64. Some things look a bit off to me, like Goombas, but it's because the models are based on the promo art and this isn't the final version. I hope Nintendo doesn't shut it down, and the development continues. I think the reason Nintendo shuts down fan projects is that they're really focused on the console market, and they want their games to be exclusive. They don't want their games to be played on anything other than a Nintendo console, and they want as many people as possible to be on their platform. Some companies don't shut down fan projects, such as Sega because they don't make consoles anymore, and their only successful game series is Sonic, which has had many failed games. So they wanted someone who has made fan projects to work on an official product, and Sonic Mania became incredibly successful and is considered to be the best Sonic game of all time. Valve also allows fan projects and their games to be modified. Black Mesa, the remake of Half-Life, started as a fan project before turning into an official product and is literally the best remake I've ever played because it doesn't just improve graphics, it also expands upon the levels and adds new mechanics. They did shut down some projects, such as an N64 port of Portal, but that has to do with Nintendo, and Team Fortress 2 on the Source 2 engine because it was a standalone game that used their assets without permission, if it was a mod, Valve would probably allowed it. Black Mesa started as a mod, then turned into a standalone game with Valve's permission, that's why it is official. Valve is also probably planning to port TF2 to Source 2 themselves in the future. In conclusion, fans can truly do something special and the work should be appreciated.
The thing I most remember about Super Mario Land on the OG Game Boy was that if you ran in the game it essentially made everything on the screen a nearly invisible blur. That ol' LCD screen just didn't have the refresh rate to keep up.
Oh wow, what a fantastic video! The abrupt ending really caught me by surprise. I was very invested and immersed and all of a sudden it was over. I would have easily listened for another 10 mins :D
That mario kart ZX call my attention like so freaking good and i am surprise you didn't add something like mario sunburn while not a graphic overhaul when it comes to gameplay is a massive improvement
I'd love to see these games done from Mario's pov in HD. Everyone always just does the side view. Just imagine seeing the same levels just from that perspective that would be awesome
Problem about this video. I agree 100% of everything you are saying about Nintendo teaming with fans to make these games a reality. HOWEVER, Nintendo HATES when you modify their work, and break into the code to change it a bit. It's like they don't even want you to reimagine their videogames :/ Sega is at least more generous with their fans...
@@bloopahVIII I could....but I'd rather tell people the truth about the situations rather than the ones created by complainers that defend an emulator that had patches behind a paywall on patreon and some from the Super Smash Bros community got exposed after what they did behind the scenes.
A great showcase for some phenomenal fan projects here; doing great things here, Shane! Such a shame the leadership at Nintendo (or at least Nintendo of Japan) hasn't picked the value of the fans are setting down - tons of money & goodwill being left on the table here! Like you mention at the end, while companies & IP holders currently have the legal right to nuke any unofficial projects with no fear of recourse or litigation because a man can't while IP/copyright law's currently stacked in favor of company heads to smite fan projects with no regards to Fair Use/Dealing, it's *_rarely_* the correct or polite thing to do; because all these guys wanna do (and others if they had the know-how) is to simply: +make sure these games are available to play & experience both as they were/are for history & posterity for those who've yet to play these games +as well as to build them up or build them to the best possible version to realize these games' true potential (or simply provide a different spin!) +and make them available on as many platforms for as long as humanly possible to make sure they're not lost to the Sands of Time like 3/4 of Silent Films or the Library of Alexandria If a handful of decision-makers would take the time to see the potential on display here (maybe even hire some of these guys for such projects), I'm certain wonderful things could happen. P.S. I'm curious what the next episode of Next Game could be about - it's been over a year since the last one, and I'd love to see more wonderful concoctions you & Adam have in store! (:
There is too much nostalgia in this video. The music, the old games, the beauty of their new fan works, I've had tears in my ears the entire runtime. Well done.
What I'd like to see is Nintendo not suing creators into financial ruin and/or threatening long-term prison sentences for their non-profit labors of love.
I get the concept of remastering the game, while still keeping the charm/style of the original release. But for sm64, I would love to see a remake of SM64 more along the lines of Harold de Boer's Super Mario 64 Re-Imagined rather than the Render96 Project.
The only thing Nintendo is doing is making a list of these games and preparing the law team to sue all of them, being the anti gamer company they truly are. I started gaming on both Atari's and Nintendo took the spot after but with who they've become I haven't supported Nintendo going on 20 years now. I will never give a company that hates the people that keep them afloat my hard-earned dollar ever again.
I don’t get why he skipped over Mario 64 DS. He made it out like Nintendo completely ignored the idea of remastering anything. He also acts like it needs the title of “all stars” and needs to be like the original for it to count. I doubt Nintendo even knew that this was a requirement by fans because it’s so weirdly specific.
Here are a few other really cool Mario fan projects: 1) 60fps Mario Sunshine hack. If you have been playing that game since childhood like me, it's a night and day difference and is a huge improvement to that game. 2) There is also a rom hack that allows for simultaneous multiplayer in Super Mario World offering a similar multiplayer experience to the New Super Mario Bros. games. 3) Lastly Super Mario Sunburn. It's a rom hack to Super Mario Sunshine, it doesn't boot you out of level after beating it, it no longer pauses the game when collecting blue coins, the long jump is added, you can skip all pre-rendered cutscenes, and so much more. It's a complete overhaul of that game while all the base aspects are still there.
It's too bad that somewhere an agent of Nintendo is looking at this video. Now, next thing you know, all the games mentioned in this video? Get Nintendo's ban hammer. Place your bets, people.
I actually had supermarioland as a kid ( born in 2000) and it was crazy seeing it in this video unlocked some core memories. The old big brick and that game or purple gameboy and playin with an adapter great times and amazing game
honestly talking about these remasters makes me think of the wonderboy and the dragons trap remaster. It has hand drawn assets and updated menus and music, but you can switch between the original graphics and music separately anytime you want with a single button press. Its super cool!
bro, this a small channel, im pretty sure many larger channels have already covered these titles in depth, and have received many more views. plus, this the internet, you'll never ever be able to wipe any of these titles off the net
The fans does that Nintendon't! Why can't Nintendo just hire fans that made excellent updates instead of sending them Cease & Desist complaints for copyright? It's not like the fans are making any profit what so ever! I mean, look how bad 3D All-Stars came out.
Nintendo is not interested in things like this. They would rather spend 250k on an inclusion consulting firm for Pokemon. Oh, and they will DMCA any of these that hit their radar.
"In addition to these standard position duties, the eventual hire will also find themselves responsible for “driv[ing] alignment of DEI goals with business strategy for both internal employees, external fans and the communities we serve” - in other words, making sure that DEI remains a focus of not just TPCi’s own operations, but their approach to interacting with players and fans." It's going to be in everything they do. If you don't know what you're talking about, you should shut your mouth. Though I imagine in your case you'd never speak/type a word ever again. @@jesusramirezromo2037
Even without any modifications, playing mario galaxy on an emulator and upscaling the models, the game is absurdly pretty, on the level of mario odyssey. Having an unmodifyed game in a limited release bundle was atrocious.
Nintendo has a Disney complex, and their Japanese stance on copyright isn't particularly compatible with modern values. We see video games as works of art to be treasured and preserved for all to enjoy. They see them as an asset to be protected at all costs, even if they have no intention of actually doing anything with them themselves. While Sega has said, "Keep making cool stuff", Nintendo seems hell bent on suing anybody and everybody who does anything with their games, and alienating the very people who are their most loyal fans, and the lifeblood of their company.
I’d say Mario world’s definitive edition is Mario world 30th anniversary edition, it adds an opening cutscene (same as the gba one) and keeps track of the dragon coins you collected, same as the new super Mario bros games. It changes the way you play the game as you are now actually encouraged to collect the dragon coins to 100% the game. It also changes some of the secret exists, which I personally don’t like but might be exciting for some
What's been on my mind for the last several months, is the idea of a fully redone Super Mario All-Stars. Remakes of all the classics in the Super Mario Bros. Wonder style. SMB Wonder's visual style is very malleable and would allow for a lot of variation and differentiation to be possible. Mario could be animated differently in each of the remakes, and maybe have his models and colors tweaked per game as well. I'd love it if they made the physics as close to the NES originals as possible, to retain that classic feel. They can blend modern Mario designs with nostalgic backgrounds and design elements. They could include the intro cutscenes from the GBA versions of SMB3 and SMW. And maybe make brand new ones for SMB, and both SMB2s. Of course, the pipe dream would be for even more games to be added. Super Mario Land, Super Mario Land 2, and maybe even arcade games like Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. I feel like Nintendo is definitely at a place where they could make new remakes of the classics that play and look extremely well. They've already set themselves up with how flexible Super Mario Bros Wonder's visual style is. It's just up to them to decide to do it. I feel like they'd be much more likely to work on brand new games instead. But a new all-stars would be so cool.
I love this channel so much. We get the comedy and cringing at JBG and Worst Ever, and we also get videos like this that are so interesting to watch and learn from. I had no idea these remakes existed, definitely going to check them out! I'm an oldhead and Super Mario Land 1 and 2 are calling my name, haha. Keep it up, Rerez team!
It makes me sad tbh that Nintendo is like this... they will never care, it makes them feel smaller somehow. I always wanted someone like Miyamotto to appreciate the work of fans, except Nintendo shows its jealousy. They lash out at fellow fans and modders who only want to show their passion for a game they love, and they treat it like nothing. To them I suppose the common folk is not worth their billions.
Shigeru Miyamoto Does actually love fan art, but the DMCA legal team in Nintendo of Japan doesn't. But the problem is when people blame Nintendo as a whole, They drag in the development leaders considering the fact they have absolutely nothing to do with those decisions.
Wrong. Nintendo oversaturated the Mario 3D All Stars physical. After the deadline, they were still widely available in stores for months, just like The Game & Watch Mario Edition. It was very easy to pick up, unlike the mini console when they first launched. Finally you don't have to buy the American version people forget that the switch is region free so if you buy the Japanese one it has English same goes with the European version without worrying about the 60/50 nonsense.

I'd rather see them making new stuff like Wonder and Odyssey than remaking old games like 64 and Super Mario Kart imo.
Let's be fair though, Mario Oddysee is a masterpiece, no one, and I mean no one can still make a finished day 1 masterpiece like Nintendo still can, though, "A Hat in Time" was pretty amazing too, so is Yooka-Laylee while I'm at it, one of the most under-rated games there is, people slated it because it felt like a Banjo-Kazzoie game lol, as if that was a bad thing.
idk they kinda cooked with Wonder and are bringing TTYD back
BRO. What are you doing. You're putting a target on their backs from Nintendo's lawyers!
You are right they treat Nintendo players like Ferrari do not make our games/cars better or custom
Nintendo is already aware of everything.
AFAIK as long as they require the original rom to run they're safe, although that mario kart fangame seems like it might get in trouble
Doing anything to any Nintendo property is painting a target on your back... I'm pretty sure they're aware of it. It's only that they love the games enough to not care.
If you know about it you can be pretty sure that they already know about it
10:58 i wish they had kept the feather and the hearts.
Can't even remember what the last dedicated Rerez episode even was. Good to have this back!
Theyre paying attention now that you highlighted them. Cease and desists inbound.
Nintendo will ignore every creation of the fans because they not need more effort to get money, an Nintendo fan is the same as Apple fans they will buy everything with Nintendo/Apple brand on it, even when is the same product. Greeting Shane
Coming from the old videos, crazy seeing you more in the video (good work), the blue background is 👌🏼, really soft in the eyes. Love your videos!
Thanks Rerez! Please do more videos like these. I love seeing what fans are making, or promising indie games, in a nice compilation like this :D
Finally! Back to the older style of videos! I love the Just Bad Games, but this type of content was what I loved to see in your Prime Time. I love to see this so much!
These remasters blew my mind.
I love the old-school Rerez thumbnail! Good on Shane, keeping it fresh by going back to the past
4:05 they did not lock players out from playing the game, they only locked out players from buying the game. You can still play the game if you have the physical or digital download.
Super Mario Land is an amazing game
Yes it is. 😄👍
Adding the Dire Dire docks music while talking about Mario 64... that was a nostalgia burst right there. Amazing video!
I just realized Shane's dressed up as that guy from the We Are Nintendo commercial
Nintendo is their own biggest enemy and the reason why piracy and emulation is so popular among Nintendo games.
The thing I most remember about Super Mario Land on the OG Game Boy was that if you ran in the game it essentially made everything on the screen a nearly invisible blur. That ol' LCD screen just didn't have the refresh rate to keep up.
It was on the GBC too. These guys forgot nintendo did remake these games in colour
@@First-Last_name no that was Super Mario Bros, not Land
The only colour versions of Land and Land 2 are hacks/bootlegs
@@Lucrei. actually it's playing the game on GBC that gives it colour. Figured that out a little after this video, when I checked my collection.
Something tells me you would've loved Super Paper Mario.
@@aeonicbutterfly9662 never really played it I saw it at blockbuster but never got it I hear it's an awesome game
The fans do what Ninten-don't.
I absolutely LOVE the claymation look of Render 96. I'm going to check it out right now.
Problem about this video. I agree 100% of everything you are saying about Nintendo teaming with fans to make these games a reality. HOWEVER, Nintendo HATES when you modify their work, and break into the code to change it a bit. It's like they don't even want you to reimagine their videogames :/
Sega is at least more generous with their fans...
Just wait for Nintendo to find these and do what they do best with fan games. (SPOILERS: its suing)
Don't worry, whenever they take down stuff it stays on the internet forever
@@l64bros19 but it's not gonna get updated, also are you STILL festering in the comments of nintendo-related videos? get a better hobby ffs
@@bloopahVIII I could....but I'd rather tell people the truth about the situations rather than the ones created by complainers that defend an emulator that had patches behind a paywall on patreon and some from the Super Smash Bros community got exposed after what they did behind the scenes.
Bout to be some cease and desist letters flying from bowsers castle
A great showcase for some phenomenal fan projects here; doing great things here, Shane!
Such a shame the leadership at Nintendo (or at least Nintendo of Japan) hasn't picked the value of the fans are setting down - tons of money & goodwill being left on the table here!
Like you mention at the end, while companies & IP holders currently have the legal right to nuke any unofficial projects with no fear of recourse or litigation because a man can't
while IP/copyright law's currently stacked in favor of company heads to smite fan projects with no regards to Fair Use/Dealing, it's *_rarely_* the correct or polite thing to do;
because all these guys wanna do (and others if they had the know-how) is to simply:
+make sure these games are available to play & experience both as they were/are for history & posterity for those who've yet to play these games
+as well as to build them up or build them to the best possible version to realize these games' true potential (or simply provide a different spin!)
+and make them available on as many platforms for as long as humanly possible to make sure they're not lost to the Sands of Time like 3/4 of Silent Films or the Library of Alexandria
If a handful of decision-makers would take the time to see the potential on display here (maybe even hire some of these guys for such projects), I'm certain wonderful things could happen.
P.S. I'm curious what the next episode of Next Game could be about - it's been over a year since the last one, and I'd love to see more wonderful concoctions you & Adam have in store! (:
This was one of the first games I beat when I was a kid
Mad nostalgia
There is too much nostalgia in this video. The music, the old games, the beauty of their new fan works, I've had tears in my ears the entire runtime. Well done.
What I'd like to see is Nintendo not suing creators into financial ruin and/or threatening long-term prison sentences for their non-profit labors of love.
Don't worry, Nintendo notice and ask to remove them whenever there's even just an advertisement on the download page.
Weird and unrelated question but does anyone remember the all controller? I remember being really excited for it years ago and it never came out.
Faintly
Here during the premiere!
Nice! I like the Just Bad Games series, but glad to see more old-school kinda content.
I get the concept of remastering the game, while still keeping the charm/style of the original release. But for sm64, I would love to see a remake of SM64 more along the lines of Harold de Boer's Super Mario 64 Re-Imagined rather than the Render96 Project.
Nintendo will sue all of these remakes...
Not all of them though, If they sue them, they're going to stay on the internet forever
Nintendo has already nuked entire websites.
Its a matter of time, not a matter of if
@@eternal221 Then how come I still see another Metroid remake available for download along with others.
It's all good till Nintendo sends you
To court.😂
Why hasn’t Nintendo worked with the fan community to bring back old classics?
Simple because there too focused on stopping fans.
The only thing Nintendo is doing is making a list of these games and preparing the law team to sue all of them, being the anti gamer company they truly are. I started gaming on both Atari's and Nintendo took the spot after but with who they've become I haven't supported Nintendo going on 20 years now. I will never give a company that hates the people that keep them afloat my hard-earned dollar ever again.
i’m gonna look forward for this to become a trilogy that’s advertised as a long running series but gets dropped after episode 3
Yeah never forget Filmrez...
I still like that they mess around a lot even if they rarely commit.
Nintendo: Thanks for the list, Shane. Our paramilitary hight tech tactical squads, already dispatched to eliminate threat to our money.
Here are a few other really cool Mario fan projects:
1) 60fps Mario Sunshine hack.
Wow, time to mess up my sleep schedule to watch this at 10 PM
I'm happy to be here for the premier of this free and incredible entertainment. Thanks you...
Btw the first switch remake which was links awakening was by Grezzo who remade the Zelda 64 and snes games for the 3ds

Cause Nintendo to busy suing the
Pants off of people who make these.😂
Always a good idea to draw attention to Nintendo fan projects.
bro, this a small channel, im pretty sure many larger channels have already covered these titles in depth, and have received many more views. plus, this the internet, you'll never ever be able to wipe any of these titles off the net
The modded version of Super Mario Kart just looks how I remember the game.
Rent feee in your head huh
They didn't hire an "inclusion consultant" for games, NOA did it for their employees
"In addition to these standard position duties, the eventual hire will also find themselves responsible for “driv[ing] alignment of DEI goals with business strategy for both internal employees, external fans and the communities we serve” - in other words, making sure that DEI remains a focus of not just TPCi’s own operations, but their approach to interacting with players and fans."
It's going to be in everything they do.

Super mario 64 ds was a remake of sm64 and you're acting like it never got one
Your video quality is the best.
Definitely one of the best channels on TH-cam.
It also changes some of the secret exists, which I personally don’t like but might be exciting for some
Nintendo step in... DMCA everyone, close citra, close Wii u shops, and 3ds shop.
Maybe better If Nintendo doesn't step in
So excited seeing Render96 and Mario Kart HD talked about here-- They're some of my most favorite projects in this genre.
Somehow, the original Mario Kart 64 graphics are still more appealing than the HD remaster.
Rerez videos are the only long videos that I watch without skipping. 🎉
It's great to see Rerez actually cover good games, however rarely!
@@M64bros ah that is a shame
@@nickonerd yeah
