    Thanks again Trev.
What I have learned from you is a light tap with the hammer is more effective than a heavy hit to achieve your end goal. From a heavy hit, the metal seams to bounce rather than move.
I'm off out to my workshop to attempt today's lesson. Great stuff & inspirational as usual.

As is so often the case. kinda zen advice when you think about it...

I started by hammering aluminium cans together, then forming the into ash trays.

    • @fishhuntadventure
      @fishhuntadventure ปีที่แล้ว

Well actually a heavy whack is quite dramatically effective in shaping metal… the thing is that it moves other places that aren’t beneficial- and correcting these stretches, wrinkles, and shapes is more time consuming than simply stretching it where you want it more generally to begin with.

Nice work, Trev. You're a good teacher; now I know why body work is so expensive as it is quite an art; while still a profession and very time consuming. Personally, I've been a mechanic for about fifty years and have quite a bit of welding experience which includes socket welding high pressure hydraulic piping. Stick and MIG are my experience as TIG wasn't really into use widely at that time, (1970s and 80s). Massaging sheet metal for body panels hasn't been my forte, though. This is why I feel fortunate to have found your channel. Not all of us have access to the major tools of the trade such as English wheels an such, so it's quite refreshing to see how panels can be formed using what can be easily and economically procured. I thank you for taking the time to share your expertise.

Thanks Trev. I have messed around for years getting poor results, not knowing what I am doing and because of this video and other of yours that I have watched, I now understand. When I have tried to remove dents in the past I have been doing it backward, trying to hit out from behind when I should have placed he dolly there as in your explanation of curve of steel etc . Thank you...

thanks Trev , another excellent tutorial showing the process in detail from start to finish. Its better than following a course at college or in a workshop as we are getting one to one in the front seat. Thank you for going to the trouble of explaining your tool choice and the various methods of using them so that we can see your thought process throughout the job.
In a few short hours with your video tutorials I have learnt far more than I have picked up over a 50 year period of repairing and restoring my own classic cars.

There aren't ANY schools for this skill anywhere.
The skill is passed from generation to generation, and the younger people will just take the shortcut and use force, machines, or welding to do what you see Trev do in the video.
Notice how slowly Trev works the small piece!

  • @monkeybase01

Hello, learned a lot from your videos!!
My bodywork teacher back in the day explained the waffle hammer as follows:
when you hit a stomp nail again and again at random places on a flat sheet, the metal will compress at those points and the flat sheet will shrink inwards into a bowl.
I then tried flaring out my fenders with the waffle hammer his way, but it didn't work for me, by just hiting it and by luck doing it half your way there was more succes.
Maybe I can start on the other side now, after 20 years :)
    Cheers

How many dollys and types are needed., bead roller, TIG for body panels external vs MIG with Argon, must have hammers, nice to have/completist only and anything on the whaletail body picks for addressing small dents on a fender-like when something fell off the rafter and put a plum sized dent in the crown of a 61 Alfa fender. stuff like that

Also love the music in your videos. Would be interested in your music sources to see if I could find them on this side of the pond. Love having music playing some of the time when I'm putzing on projects, but not so much when working metal because it feels like the sound of the work is part of the feel for the metal. Which brings me to a question. Do you have a different feel for the metal when using a tool with a wooden handle verses a synthetic handle? I'm very new at this, but it seems like a wooden handle gives me better feedback from the metal. I guess a more delicate feel would be a way to describe it. Thanks!

I just search for music on TH-cam, there are millions of tracks on TH-cam. All of my hammers have wooden handles, I tend to find that getting used to using a specific tool by using it for hundreds of hours makes it more effective in use rather than buying something with a high price tag, although struggling with something cheap and ineffective is also totally pointless. Cheers Trev 👍

With regards to the shrinking process which my family used, was:
    1. Heat a bullseye to bright cherry.
    2. Hammer+dolly in a circular fashion from the outer edge into the center, then quench.
    3. Repeat step 2 as necessary (I've seen more than a dozen 'shrinks' - on average).
    4. Slap iron (medium coarseness bumping file) and dolly the panel contour, then Vixen file, move the shape as needed. You might need to pick, you might need to shrink, but keep at it, you'll get there.
    5. After the repair is painted, stare at the panel profile from the side for at least an hour, and notice not one wave.
