- The BMW M4 is astounding to drive, and a great place to spend time. The guys wonder if the car actually needs you to be involved, or is it too capable? While driving one of the more stylistically controversial BMWs, they try not to crack too many beaver teef jokes while debating the dynamics vs. the appearance.

It's amazing to me that BMW never abandoned the "futuristic pontiac" look. Was Pontiac that far ahead of their time that BMW had to expand on it for thr next 3 decades ?

I love how both Todd and Paul can talk about the exact same thing, but Paul is speaking with reverence and Todd is speaking with ridicule and somehow it harmonizes together.
6 mo owning the M3 manual and besides loving the driving experience to pieces...I daily drive mine and I kid you not, not more than one day passes between people complimenting the car...6 mo straight. and frankly, the front end, when you see it bearing down on you in your rear view, is hella intimidating....this machine is a beast...and with the mods catching up it's getting to be a great car community to be in. Also, M cars are selling better than ever in M history.

@TestDrive, what do you like better, this M4 (M3) or the IS500 and for what reasons?
When it comes between Ms I like the M3 over M4, but I cannot make up my mind between M3 and IS500.
I love the Lexus reliability and the V8, but I like the usability (size) of the new M3 and the manual transmission option (my preference), but I am worried about its reliability.
My opinion, IS500 if you're looking for daily driver with a lot of traffic. M3 if you want a track car and don't drive in a lot of traffic.
I plan to get the IS500 for the n/a V8 and a reliable, daily driver. Both are excellent choices

I saw a dark color M4 in person and it did not look bad.
Paul am I crazy? or is having the surface that the infotainment screen is on start outside the dash and then, as you go left, fold under the dash, a really bad move from a design standpoint? It really bothers me. Either your infotainment is tacked on above the dash, or it's tucked under the dash with the gauge cluster. This looks like they tried to do both at once, like sporting swimming trunks with a ski jacket. It makes it look like the infotainment screen is an extension of the gauge cluster, and the gauge cluster itself is sticking out of the dash like it wasn't fitted properly.
Ok... the minor detail of the three M color threads in the seatbelt is divine, similar to the 991 GTS interior package.

there’s actually a direction and palette behind the styling all around (instead of “bangle cars but uglier and vascular and cheaper feeling”)
As an engineer, I can confirm, we don't care where on the front of the car the cooling air comes from. Using "Cooling" as a justification for the beaver teef is absurd. Look at the 1994 ford taurus! look at the 1st generaton RX-7! you can design a car to look like it has no holes, and still put an internal combustion engine in it. Air hits the car all over the place, you can get it from almost anywhere.

You can build one of these for around 80k and at that price point its a lot more tempting to get one.
An M2 CS is about the same price. So no the M4 is not tempting.
You can get the entire driving experience for 25k less than your constant babbling about the 100k...your tester has a lot of purely cosmetic options. Even the ceramic brakes are essentially a cosmetic option off the track. At 75 to 80k, accounting for inflation, the M4 has held steady with the older models all the way back to the E46. There's nothing wrong with talking about how expensive it CAN be, but not mentioning once that a quarter of the price was unnecessary options wasn't great journalism. And you're six months too late to go on and on about the grill. I've lived with that front end for since March and, while I still don't love it, most of the general public who have seen it like it more than I do. At least it looks more interesting than the feature-less fish-nose on the Model 3 and Model Y.

Man what were they thinking because months after they showed the world this monstrosity, the front still hasn’t gotten any better.
I always have loved the first gen Panamera styling, I know why people don't love it but I think it's wonderfully shooting-break-esque. How dare you compare the Beaver Teef to the Panamera styling!!

BMW used to be the sound of ITB inline sixes, now they are the sound of boost rushing through an air-water intercooler.
The grille looks really good. The old bmw look dated now I would only consider a new one.

Am I unreasonable for wanting new cars to drive better than the old cars they replace? It seems like the discussion nowadays is never how much better the new car is than the predecessor, it's "how much of the predecessor did it retain". Sure they are "better" on paper, but driver involvement is unilaterally being snuffed.

I was in the market for a new car and thought about buying my first BMW. Saw how fugly the 3/4-series has become, and noped my way out. (Bought a '21 MX-5 ND2)

Dear BMW (and every other car manufacturer). How about instead of turning Drifting into a video game, you build cars without those computers and screens and with naturally aspirated engines and torsen rear differentials so they can be lighter... because light weight is what makes drifting a joy.

The front-end is just SUV. It's SUV-sized. That's what I'd expect to see on a much taller car, that is an SUV.
I hate that new BMW grilles don't have a chrome rim. It used to give it a classy look. Without the chrome rim on the grille, it just looks like a piece of plastic. Cheap.

yah I feel the jokes about the front are so 2020. Most people coming around to the front, especially in dark paint color and/or in person.
If your car looks better in darker colors it's probably because it's ugly
Objectively it is a good car if you don't have eyes. It is one of the ugliest designs of all time. I disagree with Paul, the whole exterior design is ugly and random. Hard to splurge on a car this bad looking.

The M4 looks like an 80's guy who had plastic surgery to have his nostrils enlarged because he was tired of how slowly he's capable of snorting cocaine.
The more I look at it, it is really really good looking for everything except the grille. I love the scallops on the hood above the grille, I love the headlight shape, its a sexy car with a giant pimple on the middle of it's nose. It's a gorgeous supermodel with only 3 teeth.
The whole video i am just appreciating how beautiful these roads are. Gives me another reason to ditch the fossil cars to save the trees...

I love the front end with the big grill. I don’t like the new M2 as it doesn’t have the new grill. I’m narrowing down my choices and this one is in the mix.

Here's the thing... I don't hate it. It's new and unfamiliar, but it doesn't deserve the abuse it gets. I suspect that next year no one will care. I hope BMW holds firm, because the "Bangle Flames" have aged beautifully.
Yep. I’ve told everyone that as much as (for example) Mercedes Benz is legendary and an old Titan-I feel like BMW is actually the one that lowkey sets trends. It’s also the benchmark when people compare cars or race them.
I hated it at first but now I see what they’re going for. It’s literally a German heat seeking missile lol. They did a leap jump in terms of aggressiveness. Other makers look too soft in comparison if you see an M4 parked next to something else.

The design is fine. Looks good. It’s progressive. You guys are just set in your old ways. Move on from the same old same old please. Design is subjective.
Yes, design is personal… but keep in mind that a huge percentage of people don’t like this grill. Continuing to mention it increases the chances of a design refinement. Also - keep in mind that Paul is a car designer by training and background. Thanks for watching!

You call this review? You two spend way too much time talking about the looks. We can see the car. We know what it looks like. Not everyone can simply test drive one, however. And that's what why we turn to reviewers like you. I learned absolutely nothing watching this. I can read a spec sheet. But how does it compare to other cars in the same price segment (you briefly mention the subject, but don't give any examples)? How does the base version compare (from a driving dynamics point of view) to the competition (you mentioned the ZF8 would be a better fit, but don't have it in this review)?

I agree. They mention they can have better cheaper cars but don’t say which one?! They like it but they don’t love it, lol. You don’t have to live everything to enjoy it.
