  • The guys drive the Porsche Cayman GT4 RS on the street, and immediately realize they're wasting the car's time. It should constantly live on a racetrack, but what's it like to drive on the street and at slower speeds?

    I think that people sometimes forget that the GT4RS is not just a marketing exercise, but also a GT4 homologation special which was designed to fix the inherent issues with the GT4MR, specifically the thermal capacity. I suspect that Porsche's engineers moved the engine intakes to the quarter-windows to free up cooling capacity in the side vents, and discovered the impact on the in-cockpit sound along the way. The marketing guys most likely heard it and responded "Yeah, we can work with that!".

    I think we need a Friends of Everyday Driver group buy for the GT4RS. 50% off and a guaranteed allocation sounds about right. We can all pick up our cars at the Experience Center together. Hurley Haywood could give a master class on driving these incredible machines and Paul can teach us how to properly detail and clean our cars after a track day!

    Great video as always. Todd is absolutely right! Most of these will never get driven the way they were intended, and that's a shame. But isn't that true with most uber sports cars now a days?. For me a manual is a must. I don't care how smooth or fast the PDK is. I'm not chasing lap times, but rather, fun times.

    Great review guys. My GT4RS started its journey from Edmen port in Germany today to my dealer. I should get it by Thanksgiving. I miss my 718 GT4 so much but part of my agreement was I’d use it as a trade-in and I know this will make up for it.

    Great video! Thank you for comparing the 4RS, GT3, and the GT3RS. I am looking forward to drawing my own conclusions after comparing the 4RS, 992 GT3, and Lambo STO after delivery day. I already feel that the 992 GT3 is a bit bloated and best utilized on track over daily driving (for those of us not commuting solely on twisty B roads).

      The RS cars haven’t had a manual for a while. In fact, there’s very few modern race cars that have a manual anymore either. As a lover of the manual transmission I will say PDK is absolutely amazing. And guess what? If you use the paddles you get engagement with both your right AND left hands 😉

    • @davidsucks922
      @davidsucks922 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the point of this car is to be the fastest Cayman ever. People should be buying this because they want to go faster on the track, not so much for driving enjoyment (though obviously that's a bonus of any fast well-balanced Porsche). Seems like the GT4 (or even GTS) will suit 99% of enthusiast's needs, and that one comes with a manual.

    • @mr.revsup
      @mr.revsup ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phattyhales I did have an extended drive in a Cayman that had the PDK... My old M240I had the flappy paddles... even as good as the PDK is... flappy paddles will never be as good as a real manual transmission. I'm assuming that a lot of this camera work is yours Chance? excellent as always.

    You were very happy with the turn in and I presume steering feel with the cast iron rotors. How was the steering feel compared to the Cayman R with hydraulic steering from your 3 Cayman Generation Video? Is a person missing anything anything by specifying cast iron rotors rather than PCCB which save 37.5 pounds on unsprung rotating mass, other than a $30,000 brake job if PCCBs need replacing?

      I can't verify the source but a couple magazine mentioned that there will be 7000 GT4 RS expected to exist, which will make it a less rare car to come by ( just for reference there's about 6500 991.2 GT3 )
      So I'd suspect a decently used one will still lose value once the dust settles, but I don't think it'll ever go under $/€120k. The demand is very high for this one.

    Manual transmission can't keep up. I grew up on manuals and love them. But I just want to be faster and more efficient. Its funny how manuals are worshipped by Americans but years ago Americans would have nothing more than an auto. Now their so good they don't want them. ?

    • @TestDriveVideos
      @TestDriveVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No question that the PDK and most modern automatics are better than a manual if viewed objectively. But from an involvement perspective, the manual wins in its organic way of connecting a driver to what's going on and feeling vital to the process. Similarly, there's no question that digital music recordings are easier, cleaner, and objectively better - but some people prefer the "feel" of listening to vinyl. Thanks for watching.

      @@TestDriveVideos the difference though in this type of NA high revving car is the additional 7th gear. The gear ratios are thus closer in the 7 speed and is accelerating like how it was meant to.
      I just scratch my head with those who prefer a 6 speed manual (one less gear) in this type of car.
      A 7 speed 3 pedal isn’t all that great either as Porsche and owners found out. Too easy to mistakenly go into 5th when meaning to go into 3rd.
      Their is still the fun factor but that can be achieved in an older generation car that was engineered and designed for the 6 speed 3 pedal.
