For those who care, when they filmed Matthew McConaughey's reaction, they got his closeup first, which usually a filmmaker won't do because you start with wide shots and then go closer. And Matthew really hadn't seen the videos he was reacting to before. Those were his honest, raw, first reaction they got. Incredible filmmaking, incredible acting. And of course...Hans Zimmer..

In Nolan's own words: "But he hadn’t seen the video messages-we’d filmed them all in advance, so that everything would be there in the moment-and he wanted to give us his first reaction. We shot it twice close-up, and I think I used the second one, because the first one was too raw. Then we shot the monitors, and the wider shots, and put it together."

it is devasting when you look closer to what his son said in that video... He said that they buried grandpa last week right next to Mom and Jesse. So basically the great grandfather outlived Cooper's Wife and his son's very young child. A great grandfather who had to see his own great grandchild die from the dust storms getting worse on Earth.... That would annihilate anyone to be honest....

Can we just take a moment to appreciate the sheer acting skill it takes to show the entire range of emotions that Matthew McConaughey went through? There are literally only 3 other scenes I can think of at the moment that make me tear up without fail every single time I've watched them. This is one of them, along with the ending scene of Titanic, and the first 20 minutes of UP. Watching this for the first time was crazy, was not at all expecting some of the most heart wrenching and tragic couple of minutes I've ever seen before in the middle of a space travel sci-fi movie. Has to be one of the most dramatic gut punches I've ever seen during a movie...

i think what makes this scene so heart-wrenching is the layers. i always think about how he might be looking at these messages as though they're from the perspective that he's dead, and with his kids having no way to know, it's really like they're leaving letters at his grave and only hoping that he'll see them somehow.

I had a terrible relationship with my mother in my young adult years. I didn't talk to my mother for years. After I saw this movie... it changed me. I remember being at her front door and begging her not to hate me, in tears on my knees. My mother came down and just held me in her arms. I was 25. I'm 32 now, and I'm so thankful to this movie to this day for showing me how important it is to cherish the moments you have with your loved ones. A 2 years after that, she started coming down with Parkinsons, and she has only progressively gotten worse as time goes on.
I implore with anybody who is reading this in hopes that it helps you see the light. Cherish the time you have with your loved ones, and especially your parents. Years later, just this year actually..., I sat down to watch this with her. She fell asleep while it played lol, but that's okay. I wouldn't trade that time for anything in the world.

I absolutely adore this film and I watch it most weekends. When I first saw this scene I didn't cry! Oh I was amazed and upset by the fact that Coop and Amelia were gone for 23 years leaving poor Rom on his own - it's so strange to think that they were only gone for what, like 1 and a half hours or so but it was 23 years, 4 months and 8 days Earth time! Anyway, like I said I didn't cry but I sob my eyes out watching these reaction videos.
Same for the end when Coop is finally reunited with Murph on her death bed. No tears, just a slight feeling of sadness. But again when I watch these reaction videos, I cry my eyes out at that scene also!
Must just be watching all the reactors crying that starts me.
Anyway, I love this movie and I can't wait to go see it in a few days at our local IMAX for it's 10th anniversary. I didn't get to see it when it first screened in 2014 so me and my daughter are going and we're really looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

What would it be like if only 1 hour for you was 7 years on earth? And the realization of everything you've missed, the people who have died and you'll never see again. It's purely, coincidentally 23 years and 4 months until my daughter is my age.
I love this film and this scene but it just hit very hard right now just how categorically devastating it would be to blink and miss that. It feels like it moves at that pace already.

Mary Cherry's reaction to Murph's message back to Coop is mine most every time I watch the movie. A kid hoped their dad would come back, and he didn't. That makes me cry every time.

Strange thing cause when the movie got out I read couple top critics comment on Rotten and many of them were saying they didn't felt anything, that the movie was aseptic.

I don't even think that this is the most emotional scene in the movie. Maybe because the timeskip is hard to truly feel in your core but of the 4(ish) cry-worthy moments i'm so close to breaking down when Murph says "because my dad promised me". I never had a dad and i'm planning for a kid right now and take being a dead very very seriously.

We are watching the impact on Cooper from his realisation of the harsh, uncaring brutal reality that 23 years of his future social and family life have taken from him on the span of a few hours. All the while though, the glow from the cause, the ever powerful, ever massive black hole, flows through the station window and ebbs on his tormented face in an almost mocking rhythm, like a clock ticking ever forward.

A lot of people don’t understand time dilation in black holes. The gravity pull is so strong it bends time. Bending time is basically holding it back so it moves slower in a linear direction. So an hour is like 7 years

Yeah it's kinda easy to miss as it's mumbled sort of so I think a lot of viewers missed it the first time, I did. Matthew's acting in this scene is just spot on except for when he hears that his grandson had died, even though he never met his grandson and didn't form a bond..still, I thought maybe he could've shown bit more emotion there, too but it just may be the never bonding with em thing.
