Personally, I, like my mother, father, and grandmother, store the kids right UNDER their corresponding container. It saves us space and we have a huge family (I’m still living with my parents, so there are 5 of us in one house and when my dad was a kid, there were 7 people). Edit: Autocorrect, I store LIDS under the container, not kids. I’m keeping it like that because it’s funny and another commenter pointed it out to me.
@@vickimiller5496 autocorrect. Apparently, kids is more common to be stored away under containers than lids. (And it did it again, changed it to kids, but I caught it this time.)
"I am organized because I'm lazy", that's me! My friends think that I spend a lot of time tidying my house. In reality, I hardly ever have to tidy up. Being organized is a huge time saver.
That's my line..."I'm organized because I'm lazy". I even live by the one touch rule. If I have to touch it again it means I didn't put it back to it's place. Even with clothes... I take them off into where they belong...the laundry basket.
Second! I am so glad to see your opinion on aesthetic fridge organization... it does not work for normal households. It just takes one husband and a case of soda to ruin anything i set up.
I try to organize my refrigerator, not aesthetic organized, just like things together! I have even labeled what goes on what shelf (dairy, Cokes, leftovers, cheese, ...) and in the doors. But my husband sees an empty space, and whatever is in his hands gets put there! So much for my organizing 🤷🏻♀️
I do it kinda sorta, I removed the two big drawers and added three smaller ones. My fruit and veggies thank me every week by not getting lost/forgotten in the back
Two trends that make me cringe are the aesthetic fridge organization and emptying EVERY packaged food container into a glass jar. Those drive me nuts! Oh, and a third that I’m seeing a lot lately is people folding items and tucking it into itself. I’m all for neat folding, but I don’t need to tuck my towel into a flap I made at the end.
My unpopular organizing opinion: stop buying so many spices, vitamins and make up/hair/skin care products! I have watched videos of people who 'organize' their spaces and all I can think is "it will take you ten years to use up all that!" Less is more.
Have you seen the evolution of Natalie Bennett’s bathroom?! Amazingly overstuffed a couple of years ago with so many many products to neat and simple-ish today. It took many iterations for her to pare down, but I feel it reflects the way real people work. Very encouraging for us regular folk. 😁
I organized all my excess, there's no need to buy more shampoo, I've got plenty. I don't believe in getting rid of things I'll actually use up. I turned my guest room into a pantry, and that's what is working for me. Very easy to find things, it's like my own tiny grocery store. ha ha.
The thing about "aesthetic fridges" that gets me is that there is never a condiment in sight. You can't tell me that a house with kids does not have ketchup or ranch dressing. Can't a girl have some mustard on her ham sandwich?? Haha!!
My "unpopular" opinion is to NOT use shelf paper in my kitchen/bathroom drawers. Actually when my mom died and I was clearing out her kitchen, I discovered more kitchen towels than I would ever need. Then a brilliant idea hit me, also after cleaning out her drawers, why not "line" my drawers with these towels? The liner that I was removing from her drawers was falling apart and was gross, plus I have heard that bugs go after the glue on boxes and shelf liner, not food. Living in an apartment and being allergic to about every chemical out there (so no bug spray for me when they spray my building), I choose these towels which can be cut to whatever size I need, although I have not had an issue so far, and I can just throw them in the wash periodically without dealing with shelf liner. Easy peasy and much more environmentally friendly. Btw, now you know a Susan ;-)
OMG, I'm so glad that someone is voicing the "alternative" opinions! So here are my additions to your list... 1. so much plastic -- too much plastic (Yes, I am one of those people concerned about the environment) The idea of buying lots of plastic, on top of what we already bring in from the take-out places and the grocery store is AWFUL to me. 2. Also, in case of a fire, the plastic melts and ruins things. 3. Not everyone has lots of drawers or walls, which makes things difficult to figure out storage solutions. (this applies to apartment tenants) 4. Not everyone lives in a house. You can't redesign apartments or start putting lots of holes in the walls. 5. People in apartments want to be organized too. But it's harder to figure out solutions because of 4 and 5 above. 6. Short people can't put everything on the top shelves. 7. If you live where there are earthquakes, it's not a good idea to put heavy things above your bed or to put breakables on high shelves. I want to be organized, but it seems more challenging because of these ideas. It's hard enough to get started being organized in the first place; but I'm getting there!
1. stop buying takeout and then using plastic to organize makes more sense. My plastic containers are reusable, which makes them more environmentally appropriate than throw away take out trays and cups. 2. Use bookshelves. When I lived in a 400 sq ft apartment, I had all the walls lined with bookshelves. I bought them at Office Depot, super easy to put together. When I bought my house, I used those bookshelves in my library. They weren't expensive, but they were very helpful. 3. get a step stool 4. put things in the top of your closet instead of above your bed. Put excess there, organized and labeled. For example, I have a tote of winter blankets, a tote with out of season clothing, etc. Very easy. Hope this helps.
I transfer almost everything into glass jars -- if you've ever had an insect (unnamed because revolting) infestation or mice you will do the same. When you live in a city apartment you have to put in those controls -- everything in glass!
Excellent idea! 💯 Especially if you live in New York and have insects and rodents as roommates. 😱 Personally, I have a huge stock of mason jars in different sizes. I use them to keep all my herbs and other ingredients, and foods fresh. And they look pretty too! 😍
I LOVE my cascading hangers, but I don't have a huge wardrobe. My partner and I share a small closet and they work wonders for seasonal pieces :D Plus, I group like-items together, Blouses, Tanks, Tees etc so I never have more than I need
Which is it, a cascading hanger or a double rod in your closet? I do not like either. I like to hang my dress pants straight down from those hangers that can slide in place over your clothes. And hang my dresses nearby. My clothes are too long to have a double rod. I got rid of my dressers and I'm using a wooden cube in my bedroom where I do my file folding of shirts, tanks, shorts. My cubes hold taller cube size fabric boxes so I just tweak my clothes folding from the Marie Kondo method. Now I have room for everything I need.
I wear all my clothes pretty regularly 💀😭 So that didn’t work for me, unfortunately. Didn’t realize how much of a fashionista I was until I tried decluttering my closet lmao. On the up side, I finally have a large enough closet to accommodate my wardrobe. 😅
As a professional maid here's my organization hot takes Only kitchen stuff belongs in kitchen storage. There should be some method to the madness that is your food pantry. Seasonal items should be stored away when it's not that season. Each family member gets max 3 pairs of shoes in the mudroom, no socks. Kids toys should all be stored in a playroom and a few in their room. Also a limit placed on how many toys. If it's 100 or more peices of plastic some got to go.
I agree with all of these. Also, the editing on this video gave me life. You are very creative and your personality truly shows in your productions. 👏🏽👏🏽♥️
My mom has a whole dang cabinet of Tupperware, and an entire deep DRAWER of LIDS. drives me crazy, it takes SO LONG to find anything. We have a minimal amount of containers, and if we're out of containers, it means we need to eat some leftovers or clean the fridge out. ✌🏻✌🏻
My mother used to be the same way. I told her you can't find anything this way with a drawer full of lids; why not keep the lids on the containers and throw the extras away? She would not hear of it. I can finally prove that someone agrees with me that this is actually the sane way. It definitely works for me when I just need to grab a container out of the cupboard.
"Your food storage containers should be stored with their lids...ON." Amen. The End. Thank you. One thing however...If you have some very large storage containers (5-10) go ahead and stack these and keep lids to the side. It'll be okay. I LOVE most all (if not all?) of these unpopular opinions! Kudos!
My daughter used the hangin bags to put in each day’s school clothes for the week for her children. That way there was no wasted time in the morning. For that they worked perfectly!
Yes! This is exactly how we used ours when my daughter was little. It worked great. Since then, we haven't had much use for it. And now I realize that I can donate it so some other family can have a great organizer for their young ones.
LOVE THIS! The fridge thing in particular... and that organization is for having systems to quickly and easily access the things you use /need, not to maintain a showroom of your stuff.
It works in photos... Looks great when you have the two specially selected designer mugs on an open shelf and nothing else. I'm so freaking tired of the Pinterest and magazine photos that only have like one or two designer items in perfect condition stored somewhere. Recently tried to find inspiration for shoe and coat organizing for our narrow entryway. It would be so amazing to see what the different solutions look with real life items. (Btw I already found a solution and setup is on the way.)
I'm not for open shelving in the least. I guess some like it. Not for me. Nor do I like open floor concepts or kitchen islands. But some people like those things. Everyone in is different.
Last year I purchased glass storage containers. They were not cheap, but I really love them. Best decision I made for my kitchen since I purchased the sponge holder from the Dollar Tree. LOL
That is why we only have collapsible containers that we store with the lid. What also worked for us was having a bin for the containers and a corresponding bin with the lids and nothing was lost. Also don’t give your containers away. You will never get them back.
Thanks for keeping it real! I love to hear your advice. :) I personally don't put the plastic lids on my glass containers bc there's often some water left in the sealing part of the lid after I cleaned them in the dishwasher, so I decided to store them the other way around: I put the lid on the shelve (sealing part up) and the glass container on top of the lid (the bottom of my glass containers fit perfectly inside the lid). This way the lid and the container are still together so the lid doesn't get lost and there's also no moisture trapped inside. I love my glass containers (from IKEA) bc they are not only easy to clean and don't hold smells or discolour, they are also multipurpose, I could use them in the fridge, freezer, oven (without the plastic lid) or microwave and if I don't break them they will probably last me forever.
Just wanted to say “Thank you” for your quick comment about the word “aesthetic”. I have recently seen and heard the word used incorrectly so frequently by “influencers” that I began to question my use and understanding of it. It was annoying the heck out of me! Glad to see I was not the only one who recognized that 🙃🙂
First video I’ve seen of yours. It was humorous, well thought out, well spoken, unique, and had so many unexpected facets. Plus, you said so many things I’ve thought before! So practical but also interesting and entertaining. Great job!
I think you need to be discerning in what you buy at Dollar Tree. There are some things that you don't need high quality. I've purchased some drawer organizers that work well for the intended use. But I generally stick to Target or the Container Store.
Yas! The fridge thing!! Gah! I don't know why, but my personal thing at the moment is this, but I am not about the blanket ladder. Hate it. There i said it. Thanks, I wanted to get that off my chest. Also yes to predatory dollar store.
As always a very enjoyable video! I reuse the containers that dishwasher tabs come in, they are great for nail polish, small pet supplies, all sorts of things.
I have multiple clear shoe boxed sized and smaller flatter containers from many stores- Dollar, Tuesday Morning, Marshalls, etc. I label them and group like products in them. As a RN I store in refrigerator according to temperature areas- dairy & eggs in colder areas, condiments on doors , gas-producing produce separate from non. Where you buy stuff is not as important as if they do the job and science is paid attention to with foods. Glad you tend to give good advice.
I agree with everything especially shopping at the Dollar Tree. That was my go to place for years because it was "cheap". I wound up spending more money and the containers never really fit properly anyway. Or I'd see an influencer post these creative and amazing crafts, get all these supplies, they wouldn't work or fall apart and I'd end up with all these extra waste. There are so many options nowadays that are affordable it's worth spending a little extra on quality items that I'll actually use and won't break soon after purchase.
there's a lot of places to wave the blame flag at here, and, I'm not sure DS is one of them, gather all those bits up into a box labeled? Island of misfit crafts and offer them to a crafty friend any wood to the high school shop class" and whatever's leftover to the local elementary school you'll have cleared your space made others happy with tile generosity and all for just a few bucks! what I like about dollar tree is I can go buy bins and boxes hand them to my husband or kids, lead them to their messes, say sort that*point to pile or mess* out or it goes! it's so much easier to put things in a temporary home until a permanent one is established a fast cheap and easy way to clear the deck while we work out the big picture, and I agree I'd never put food in anything with a smell I can't identify, though I have seen things made with dollar tree products I wouldn't mind in my home, especially some of the holiday porch decor type things I've seen
Hello I am a home organizer (Runi Home Organizing), and I agree with you 1000% on EVERY SINGLE issue that you spoke about!! I'm so happy that I'm not the only one!! THANK YOU!!
You make me smile!! I quit watching most organizers because I got tired of being told I am wrong about...I am not a minimalist but I could be if it was necessary. As long as you can find and use housewares, food and needed clothing then don't sweat life. I buy from $$ stores if I want or wherever. You produce good content so I continue to watch. And little sweet dogs are always a bonus. I have tried the closet thingys and found they were a waste of money. I bought a certain number of flocked hangers and it must fit within the boundaries I gave muself; works for me but maybe not others.
I have one of the hanging closet things that has drawers and I use it for socks, underwear, bras, swimsuits etc. it’s an easier solution for me as I don’t have a dresser I always store my containers with the lids on. Makes it easier to grab the container and lid when you’re packing lunch / putting leftovers away
#1 - I was just describing this to my daughter, like even if it's everything people really eat, the perfection is destroyed as soon as one thing is eaten. Also, who can buy exactly the amount that will perfectly fit in the containers? :)
That is actually my new technique for not over-buying stuff lol. I have little containers for flaxseed and walnuts and whatnot, and they each only hold 1lb or 0.75lb, etc., so that's how i know how much to buy (from the bulk section). It's so much easier to deal with them without plastic bags billowing all over, and I'm less likely to forget an ingredient because it was hidden behind a 16" tall plastic bag with 1/4 cups of walnuts in it
I started storing lidded food storage containers with the lids on about two years ago, and never looked back. I LOVE not fiddling around with mis-matched lids, or messy drawers, or fighting with nested containers.
Absolutely store food storage containers with the lids. I can't stand not being able to find a matching lid. Pyrex is great for food storage. Easily replaceable. You can buy lids separately. They are stackable and can nest well.
I was coming here to say this. My dad always stored our containers this way and so do I. What you lose in space, you save on frustration. When I need a container, the only thing I need to do is decide which size I need. I love being able to buy new lids. I've been able keep decades old Pyrex in use this way.
I transfer dry goods into glass containers because I get overwhelmed by the clutter of labels. Also don't stack, it's good to be able to just reach a grab something! Thanks Kay!
Me too. I also got pantry moths once and so EVERYTHING gets decanted. I use identical jars from pickles with matching white lids, each holds 2 cups. If I buy in bigger amounts I just use 2 or 3 jars and line them up. When the first is empty it goes into the dishwasher and then gets put at the back of the row. They have completely straight sides and wide mouths. I use 1 cup salsa jars the same way for small things like spices. Also perfectly straight sides, and take the same identical-white lids as the pickle jars. I have adhd and a strong personal aesthetic so I prefer uniformity. For things that look similar (salt, sugar, etc. I cut off just the name from the label and tape it to the jar. Amazingly the labels survive the dishwasher so I don’t do this more than a couple of times a year and it takes exactly 1 minute. My spices in the salsa jars get a label from my label maker.
@@djkg17 Blue masking tape & a marker make a decent reusable label for recycled or mason jars...also for decanting packaged goods you can tear off the box label and stuff it in the jar.
I've been telling my family for the last few weeks that I'm going to throw out all of the food containers and just start over with a few higher quality ones. You were speaking to me about those containers! Lol I now have the nudge to finally get it done! Thanks!!
I did that a few months ago! I splurged on Rubbermaid brilliance containers. Clear containers, airtight clear lids, consumer tested like crazy. I previously let go of all my old Tupperware when I found out about the lead, etc. This last time around I got rid of all the little containers that get lost in the back of the fridge, & the sour cream containers (that never get eaten because everyone thinks it's sour cream lol), etc. All I have now are 7 clear, rectangular containers, & I haven't missed all that mess even one time. I store them with the lids on and it's SO easy and stress-free that I wish I'd done this many years ago. I do have a few small glass jars that I use if I need to refrigerate a tiny bit of something, but those tiny bits always end up not getting used, so I'm thinking of letting go of those too. Do it! You won't regret it!
We did just that, though must say I only live with my husband, no kids or pets. Now we have 4 glass containers that I think are Pyrex, and 4 glass ones from Ikea. Pyrex and Ikea are different size, so we have them in separate stacks. Without lids though, as they're in a place where they're easy to grab, as well as the lids, so we never have trouble finding either.
@@JamieM470 I have and love the Rubbermaid Brilliance containers as well! They are wonderful how they stack on each other if needed in the fridge as well.
With anything at Dollar Tree, etc I think you have to choose items objectively instead of getting anything & everything bc it's only $1. We have a family of 6 & on a tight budget so we use a lot of their bins & baskets all over the house but I pick the ones that are well made, versatile to use in multiple places in the house & not space wasters. (Example most of DT round baskets, containers, etc waste a lot of storage space)
It is so true about the hanging shelves. I used them for years and they did sag and I did just stuff old tshirts and more in them. (They did hold a lot of items i hadn't seen in years). Your skill share video was excellent. I actually watched the entire portion without skipping forward. :)
OMGee finally someone else who acknowledges how amazing the apple boxes are, they are so strong and unusually beautiful for a box. 😅 I use them everywhere and they actually, to me, have a more pleasing aesthetic than cheapo plastic boxes. there are probably only a handful on this planet who understand the joy of finding these boxes and then doing a feat of tetris skill to get them into a draw together.
Just gotta pause. Cell phone boxes. YES. I have never heard someone else suggest those. I have a bunch of those in my utility/junk drawer, plus long boxes from hair tools! Flat iron boxes are usually pretty solid. I keep telling myself I will get some proper containers for the pantry when I know exactly how we will use them, but we have been in our house for 2 years 😅
It took me 15 yrs! Try pulling out everything in the cabinet and group them into categories to see what you might want to store together. That will give you an idea of the size(s) you might need. Being able to pull out the container and put it back is so much easier than rifling through everything to get to the item you want
My favorite food storage containers are the Pyrex Ultimate. Bottoms are the same glass containers, the lids are silicon and glass. I love them because I can store them and cook in them with the lid on - no aluminum foil!!!! They sell the lids individually also, so that one can either replace or complement the existing plastic lids. I found mine a few years ago at a Pyrex outlet - the least expensive option. They can be used in the microwave also as they have a little corner that pops up. They also are sold in sets or individually. My favorite is the 3 cup rectangular for single serving meals storage for *homemade TV dinners and lunches*. They are freezer, microwave and pre heated oven safe
yep! agreed. who needs several dozen food storage containers. i have narrowed mine down to 3 glass with locking lids. you are supposed to eat up that stored food not create a fungal lab that you end up tossing right?
Leftovers get frozen for later. That's why I have many storage containers. It's like homemade frozen dinners. Lol. Not gonna let leftover soup, gumbo, etc go to waste. (And yes, the frozen stuff gets eaten.)
I *so* agree with all of these - except maybe the lidded containers, although I completely understand the sentiment. Thanks for a great video and a *very* creative SkillShare commercial. ☺️
Kay, love your sense of humor here! Clutching the pearls🤣 And I have never seen so many comments about a sponsored ad, so, well done. Somebody let SkillShare know!
LOVE these types of videos. I actually have one of those shoe racks. Shoes like to slide off and hit the floor. I did finally just turn it around and let the downward slope face the wall. Works better but flat shelves are better.
I only own pyrex and mason jars for food storage. This has made finding the lids a breeze. Each size lid is a different color. And you can order replacement lids for pyrex, so a lost lid doesn't render a container useless. It's great since the lids eventually break down.
This was a fun video. Loved it. Thanks for the laughs. You did spill a lot of tea but your friends will stay with you and come again with their pearls on too :)
I keep my lids upside down and stacked by color on a shelf directly above the corresponding container which is on the shelf below. I invite you to demand a photo with a timestamp anytime, any day - none of the lids will be missing…
@Lisa Gavin thanks for pointing this out, bc that's my experience, too. I draw a distinction between Dollar Tree (and any other franchises with Dollar in their name that are genuinely $1 items-well, $1.25 now but still) and Dollar General (chains where nothing is actually a dollar, so I find the store name offensively misleading/false advertising). Dollar Tree, etc. are often in shopping plazas next to grocery or big box store-they're unrelated to food deserts...while Dollar General seems more pervasive in "under-served" communities, where folks lack other local shopping (incl. grocery) options.
Exactly my thought!! Every time I watch one of those... do they eat every bit of food or just throw it out so the fridge looks pretty??? Not believable at all.
I agree about the Dollar Tree. Some of there small storage items are ok but the large bins are flimsy. I get baskets from thrift stores for $1-5 and they look pretty and last ages. Plus I'm tires of seeing videos for DT storage ideas but no mention of using what you already have. Oh, and can we stop cleaning out the fridge, throwing all the jars away, and then going to the DT or wherever and buying mason jars? Just wash out the pickle and salsa jars you're planning to throw out. Food storage containers- they come in your groceries. Plastic and glass. Buy a pack of reusable bowl covers and just wash those bowls and jars or use a cereal bowl. There's no need to keep buying Gladware. They've convinced us we need it but we don't.
This is a great suggestion, especially because most glass doesn’t get recycled even if it’s collected for recycling. I toured a local brewery shortly before they were bought by Anheiser Busch (so?), and they said that it’s much more eco-friendly to buy cans or refillable growlers.
I have two of those hanging shoe organizers for the closet. One for slippers, one for flip flops and sandals. One I’ve had for a really long time and it’s held up pretty well. I love slippers, so have quite a few.
My opinion on aesthetic fridge & pantries is my shopping priorities are allergy safe & budget but even if it wasn't, I ain't got the time or energy for that.
I agree with so much of what you said!!!! Cascading hangers always seemed silly unless it was for seasonal clothes that you had no other place for that you needed to put away out of the way.. But I DOOOO love pants hangers for workout shirts and workout pants. They work so well for me! LOL about the food storage containers. I really disagree. I have 2 acrylic bins attached to my cabinet that I keep the 2 sized lids for my glass food storage containers, and then the containers can stack and I use up much less space. ANd how many do I use? As many as I need for food prep, leftovers, pantry prep, etc. We use a lot.
Ok, I gotta admit....I skipped the ad ....But after all the fabulous reviews and the talk of Emmy's I had to watch. Kaye, it was fabulous. I have never "re-wound" (I'm old... that's what you did to VHS & cassette tapes!😳) any video just to watch an ad. I have to admit it was worth it and yes, Emmy worthy from Skilshare! 👍 Kudos!! 🎉🎉🎉
I have built up a supply of glass containers. I used to stack them without lids to save space, however I no longer do this. They chip and I was sick of my family putting everything all over the place. Have been storing with lids on for a while now sooooooo much better.
I have just recently started placing lids on containers to store them (saw this first on Minimal Mom, then with you!) and it has changed my thinking!! No more searching for lids!
Your sponsor portion...dying! 🤣😂 My bff has a similar recurring dream where the bell rang, her homework is in her locker and she can't remember the combination. We are 52 yrs old.
I’m in my sixties and I STILL dream that I’m in a classroom taking a big test. Problem is I have skipped most of my classes so there’s no way I am passing that test.
Facts! And I don't even know how we could arrange all the 1 liter yogurt cartons, the chicken or ham packages, etc. in an aesthetically pleasing way. Or why we should arrange them, because we don't keep on looking into the fridge, just take stuff out in as little time as possible.
Not to mention the decisions you might have to make if you actually want to EAT your red pepper or green apple, but it would throw your color scheme all off!
How could anyone be offended by you? You know of what you speak! Plus I love your humor and all the advise you share.. Thank you.. Why do people organize their books by color? I can understand doing that with children books, because then children can practice matching , color names and beginning organization skills. I confess, I have many many books(too many?)and I like to find a book I'm looking for on the shelf. I can't remember if it's red or blue covered. I can remember if it's fiction or non-fiction and the title or the author's last name.
Oh, not so fast there. I’m not convinced those ARE unpopular opinions. I, for one, agree with every single one 😄 Great gaming vibes from the ad part of the video. Loved it!
Totally agree with you on all of these :-) The only use I found for cascading hangers was when I had a large wardrobe only, they were helpful to push up one end for out of season items, and covered with a bin bag. Then washed and swapped onto individual hangers when in season again. Not ideal, but a helpful small space solution. Because yes, using them on the daily is THE worst hassle :-)
I do the dollar store because I live in a smaller town and don't have a lot options unless I order online. I live in Canada and even just to do IKEA is a y hr drive. Trying to find some closet organizers and can't even find those
OMG YES to all of these! From one pro organizer to another these are all spot on. Dollar store containers are crap and we are better off repurposing boxes/containers that we already have (or would go in the trash). Gimmicky products like cascading hangers and rod shoe organizers do not work. I tell my clients 90% of their organizing issues are because they just have too much stuff! Using "aesthetic" wrong made me LOL. Another pet peeve of mine that's unfortunately not going away! 😆
So agree with the majority of these. The Dollar Tree videos are eye rolls for me. My biggest pet peeve is people assuming you need to be a minimalist. That is not for everyone. I’m not going to feel guilty.
I fought with containers and lids for years. I use only glass for things that need to be reheated, but because of space, money, etc. I still have some plastic. I bought some BPA free round and square plastic containers. I have the round and square containers nested inside each other, and in a separate pretty container I put all the lids. So far this has worked perfectly. I know exactly where everything is, nothing falls out, and it looks nice in the cabinet.
I am so glad you feel the same way about the refrigerators!!!!!! I share your video about where food should be located in the refrigerator. I share your form too :)
I started keeping my lids on the containers when my children were small and they got into the cupboards and used containers as drums or things to stack. With the lids kept on, I did not need to wash them before putting them back, and it also made me cull any container that did not fit. Thanks so much for this video, stay safe and well xx
Totally with you especially on those hanging shelving units. Never understood why people buy those. People seem to use them just to stash away sweaters. They are always messy
We had one (Ikea hanging shelf) for seasonal shoe storage. It kind of worked, but now that we're settled down in our new condo, and have a much better organizing system here, I was excited to be able to throw the hanging shelf away.x) Our previous condo was shaped in a way that created difficult spaces. Like our walk in closet that seemed impossible to set up, and we needed to store a lot of things there, including dirty laundry. Boring straight walls and roughly square shaped spaces are the best. Probably not as exciting for the architect, but very functional.
I actually like my hanging shelves. It's on the narrow size so there's no sag .. i use it to store my winter accessories like gloves, scarves, knit caps, earmuffs, etc .. stuff that takes up so much space in a drawer (and there's no room for a basket.. to jumble it all together)
I bought a hanging shelf unit to take to Disney. My kids were in a 1 bedroom and I used the sofa bed and the hall closet. Worked out well instead of digging thru a suitcase everyday. Now I can't seem to use it in my closet. Stuffed and messy.
When it comes to my storage food containers. I try to nest them, or stack alike with all matching lids stacked on top. Though there are some with the lids seperated due to limited space. Such is life. ☮️
Yassss! I have never understood the storing lids separate from their counterparts. I also don’t lose lids. You can still stack things with their lids on. Although, I’ll never give up the Dollar Tree and we have them here in WA in affluent cities as well as middle class, less affluent cities.
I have to tell you, first the fridge made me cringe when I saw them dump produce into bins... all I could think was what a waste! I'm from Alaska, so produce is 3-4x the cost... 😳 Second thing... I live with my dad and step mom to get on my feet again. Let me tell you, as a 41 year old woman, it is a challenge. Well, they just left for a month and I had a party with the container cabinet. They had 2 shelves... top was nested bowls... we're talking some 6 and 7 layers. The bottom was a wire rack that was too wide to slide out, full of lids. I have a toddler, so I don't have hours to play matchy-matchy when I need a container. I matched them all... un nested them. ALL. And was horrified but not surprised to find 29 spare lids. TWENTY-NINE!!! 29 lids is like an entire cabinet in itself. I will give her the random lids and tell her if she wants them nested and back in with all of the reincarnated socks... I'll do it for her. I don't see that happening.
Haha loved this video so much the ad was chefs kiss 😂 I’m guilty of using the fabric shelving in my wardrobe and agree it’s not good I need to replace it 😅
Kay, every single item you mentioned I have. It was so funny hearing you mention them. You told us what you didn’t like and showed examples but you didn’t show pictures of what you did like. You should go back and do a video on the solutions to the items you mentioned that are unpopular with you. By the way, I love the Dollat Tree so much I’m asking God can it come to Heaven it and fried chicken. Lol! Forge ahead…
Uh-oh, I have one of those shoe racks and don’t store my containers with the lids. I don’t think we can be friends. ;) I have a super tiny kitchen, so all the containers have to fit on one shelf & I do use most of my containers in a week. Never lost a lid. The advantage of the shoe rack is never having to dust the shelves! I have big feet, my shoes don’t fall through the spaces between the bars. :)
I LOVE that you addressed the predatory behavior of placing low quality item stores in areas of poverty. I understand that those living in poverty can't afford higher prices, but it's like placing fast food restaurants in areas of poverty instead of giving them easier access to grocery stores with better quality food that can cost the same as the fast food places.
I always get so excited when you upload! I love this video series! Also, any other video you make! 😆 It’s always great to see clover too!! Thanks for brightening my day! ☺️
I'm with you 💯 on everything except storing containers with lids on .. I have a very organized container drawer I'd be happy to show you sometime 😂 But yeah, too much organizing is done with appearance, not functionality, in mind. PS: Your ad break made me lol! 😆
Did you know....when you loose a sock in the dryer it returns as a tupperware lid that doesn't fit any of your containers 😃😃

Two mysteries solved!
I know it's a typo...but still so funny that you store the KIDS under the container... especially with such a full household.
@@vickimiller5496 autocorrect. Apparently, kids is more common to be stored away under containers than lids. (And it did it again, changed it to kids, but I caught it this time.)
LOL! Storing kids somewhere is just about as easy as herding bats...

"I am organized because I'm lazy", that's me! My friends think that I spend a lot of time tidying my house. In reality, I hardly ever have to tidy up. Being organized is a huge time saver.
Amen!
Thanks for the tips to not buy the products you see on commercials!
Spot on
That's my line..."I'm organized because I'm lazy". I even live by the one touch rule. If I have to touch it again it means I didn't put it back to it's place. Even with clothes... I take them off into where they belong...the laundry basket.
I'm organized because I'm lazy and also because I decluttered by home! (I'm a year late with this comment since I just saw this video.)
Second! I am so glad to see your opinion on aesthetic fridge organization... it does not work for normal households. It just takes one husband and a case of soda to ruin anything i set up.
"One husband and a case of soda" 🤣💀
Truth. This would totally confuse my husband.
As soon as you finish spending 90 minutes putting your groceries away, someone will eat an orange and ruin everything.
All of this.
Oh god the flaps! I can't be doing with it, how does anyone have that much time to fold n tuck socks and knickers.
Yes on moving food items. The only items I do that for are things like rice that don't reseal well and I repurpose pretzel containers for that stuff.
I like having the expiration date on my spices, therefore I do not decant. Ditto the milk, etc. Nobody has time for that.
@@notme7090 Pretzel containers are perfect.
I do wonder what on earth they are cooking when they have 2 drawers full of spices!
You’re right about herbs and spices. I have a slew of them and use the same six or seven over and over.
Spice flavor lasts about six month so it is better to buy small size.
Haha!!
French NEVER put the mustard in the fridge. This is not necessary.
@@anne-marieesnos9402 but everyone isn't french..and Many people put it in the fridge...so what was your point??
@@anne-marieesnos9402 And ketchup? That stuff does not need to go in the fridge.
While ketchup is shelf-stable, Heinz even recommends refrigerating after opening. I think many of us do store most of our condiments in the fridge.
Where are the pickles and mayonnaise, where’s the leftovers?
(this applies to apartment tenants)
3. get a step stool
4. put things in the top of your closet instead of above your bed.
I tried the cascading hangers too and gave up for the reasons you mention. The key is to get rid of clothes you don't wear!
I LOVE my cascading hangers, but I don't have a huge wardrobe. My partner and I share a small closet and they work wonders for seasonal pieces :D Plus, I group like-items together, Blouses, Tanks, Tees etc so I never have more than I need
I have to say, this is the one I disagree with. I love my cascading hangers.
As a professional maid here's my organization hot takes
Only kitchen stuff belongs in kitchen storage.
Me too! I agreed with every single one!
Yes!!!
My mother used to be the same way. I told her you can't find anything this way with a drawer full of lids; why not keep the lids on the containers and throw the extras away? She would not hear of it. I can finally prove that someone agrees with me that this is actually the sane way. It definitely works for me when I just need to grab a container out of the cupboard.
on point!
I can’t store them lids on and my cabinets are organized! The container all stack together and the lids are contained in there own container!
This is the best Skillshare ad I’ve ever seen!
"Your food storage containers should be stored with their lids...ON."
Amen. The End.
We did the same thing till the shelves bent in the middle began sagging. Finally threw them out after unsuccessful attempts to repair them.
LOVE THIS! The fridge thing in particular... and that organization is for having systems to quickly and easily access the things you use /need, not to maintain a showroom of your stuff.
Open shelving for every thing I just can't with that look. Your skill share video was so fun and amazing.
Really depends if you're an out of sight out of mind person or if you'll remember what's behind a bin or door :)
I'm not for open shelving in the least. I guess some like it. Not for me. Nor do I like open floor concepts or kitchen islands. But some people like those things. Everyone in is different.
Me too. It's just more dusting and organising. Like why make life more difficult? Lol
@@MesRevesEnRose I agree!
Last year I purchased glass storage containers. They were not cheap, but I really love them. Best decision I made for my kitchen since I purchased the sponge holder from the Dollar Tree. LOL

I really liked this one. Not that you don't always show your personality- this one really made me feel like you were 'spilling the tea'. Thank you.!
When I was a kid I complained about containers not being attached to their lids. So as an adult, I store my containers with their lids on them. :-)
I still remember when I had a brainwave about this. It has made my life much easier to store with lids on.
I have the same ikea ones and love them
Oh and I do put a drying mat on my counter for the lids and glass so they can finish air drying before I put them away
Just wanted to say “Thank you” for your quick comment about the word “aesthetic”. I have recently seen and heard the word used incorrectly so frequently by “influencers” that I began to question my use and understanding of it. It was annoying the heck out of me! Glad to see I was not the only one who recognized that 🙃🙂
Me too!I actually checked a dictionary to make sure my understanding of the word was correct.
Yes, I am so glad people are mentioning this! It’s my biggest pet peeve and nobody else understands :’)
First video I’ve seen of yours. It was humorous, well thought out, well spoken, unique, and had so many unexpected facets. Plus, you said so many things I’ve thought before! So practical but also interesting and entertaining. Great job!
Thank you so much 😊❤️😊
I'm glad someone finally said it about the Dollar Tree storage, lol. Those baskets are always super flimsy and cheap.
Totally agree! Not worth $1
I've broken more of them than I can count. The plastic degrades over time and then they disintegrate in your hands...
I think you need to be discerning in what you buy at Dollar Tree. There are some things that you don't need high quality. I've purchased some drawer organizers that work well for the intended use. But I generally stick to Target or the Container Store.
Preach it! Think they are depressing, bad for communities, and seem like bad places to work.
Yep! Dollar store is like throwing money away!! Waste!
Yas! The fridge thing!! Gah!
I don't know why, but my personal thing at the moment is this, but I am not about the blanket ladder. Hate it. There i said it. Thanks, I wanted to get that off my chest.
Also yes to predatory dollar store.
Why don't you like the blanket ladder? For me it would be because of dust.
I love how you are evolving with your humor and opinions on your channel. I really enjoy listening to your pet peeves,😆 and I am a long time subbie.
Same here. Your personality just shines through on this video and I love it!
Oooh, this was good and honest! Someone had to say it. 😆 I'm definitely on Team Kay!
Hello I am a home organizer (Runi Home Organizing), and I agree with you 1000% on EVERY SINGLE issue that you spoke about!! I'm so happy that I'm not the only one!! THANK YOU!!
🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
Thank you for not calling storage containers "Tupperware." :-)
You make me smile!! I quit watching most organizers because I got tired of being told I am wrong about...I am not a minimalist but I could be if it was necessary. As long as you can find and use housewares, food and needed clothing then don't sweat life. I buy from $$ stores if I want or wherever. You produce good content so I continue to watch. And little sweet dogs are always a bonus. I have tried the closet thingys and found they were a waste of money. I bought a certain number of flocked hangers and it must fit within the boundaries I gave muself; works for me but maybe not others.
I have one of the hanging closet things that has drawers and I use it for socks, underwear, bras, swimsuits etc. it’s an easier solution for me as I don’t have a dresser
I always store my containers with the lids on.
It's so much easier to deal with them without plastic bags billowing all over, and I'm less likely to forget an ingredient because it was hidden behind a 16" tall plastic bag with 1/4 cups of walnuts in it
It's seriously OCD on another level. 👀 I'm definitely NOT a fan! 🚫 Overdone is not asthetically pleasing. 🧐
I started storing lidded food storage containers with the lids on about two years ago, and never looked back. I LOVE not fiddling around with mis-matched lids, or messy drawers, or fighting with nested containers.
Finally someone who says that the word aesthetic is being used incorrectly! It is not an adjective people!
Absolutely store food storage containers with the lids. I can't stand not being able to find a matching lid.
Pyrex is great for food storage. Easily replaceable. You can buy lids separately. They are stackable and can nest well.
right, I see a lot of that at goodwill and other thrift stores and I always grab them when I do
I was coming here to say this. My dad always stored our containers this way and so do I. What you lose in space, you save on frustration. When I need a container, the only thing I need to do is decide which size I need. I love being able to buy new lids. I've been able keep decades old Pyrex in use this way.
Really? You can buy the lids?
I have two Pyrex dishes that I got when I went off to college and I'm 42 now and they are still going strong. Love pyrex!
Yes. You can get lids on Amazon or from a Corelle outlet if there's one near you.
@@djkg17 I like to use the salsa jars as well, they are great! I also love a uniform look!
@@djkg17 Blue masking tape & a marker make a decent reusable label for recycled or mason jars...also for decanting packaged goods you can tear off the box label and stuff it in the jar.
Loved this! So agree that the space has to actually work for real life. Laughed my way through this video Kay, thanks!
I purged mine and now only have 2 sizes so they nest inside each other
I did this. I got rid of most of my plastic containers and bought nice glass ones.
Me too x
Pyrex containers are my favorite as well, although I didn’t know about the Ultimate lids. Looks like they’re sold out online.
yep! agreed. who needs several dozen food storage containers. i have narrowed mine down to 3 glass with locking lids. you are supposed to eat up that stored food not create a fungal lab that you end up tossing right?
Leftovers get frozen for later. That's why I have many storage containers. It's like homemade frozen dinners. Lol. Not gonna let leftover soup, gumbo, etc go to waste. (And yes, the frozen stuff gets eaten.)
If you're trying to avoid take-out it's pretty convenient having a few frozen options for super buzy days.
Thats a great idea turning it around!
That's not true about Dollar Tree being placed in low-income areas (Maybe Dollar General).
Our Dollar Trees are in middle-class shopping centers.
It's mostly dollar general
I never see a place for leftovers in those fridges...😂
I use cereal bowls to store most of my leftovers. Goes right from the fridge to microwave to the table.
This video made me take a breath! Thank you! You are so real. Tomorrow’s project… match all the storage containers with their lids!
I have two of those hanging shoe organizers for the closet. One for slippers, one for flip flops and sandals. One I’ve had for a really long time and it’s held up pretty well. I love slippers, so have quite a few.
All I can say is thank you. Thank you for validating my use of iphone cases for anything and everything and shoeboxes. I love reusing shoeboxes.
I wish more commercials were this level of fun.
Your ad section was brilliant! Very creative.
I love to look at a beautiful fridge. But then I think, who has perfectly rainbow groceries?
Ever since Rainbow grocery stores closed it’s impossible…
Facts! And I don't even know how we could arrange all the 1 liter yogurt cartons, the chicken or ham packages, etc. in an aesthetically pleasing way. Or why we should arrange them, because we don't keep on looking into the fridge, just take stuff out in as little time as possible.
Barbie. 😂
Not to mention the decisions you might have to make if you actually want to EAT your red pepper or green apple, but it would throw your color scheme all off!
@@sinbadrockstar8219 Exactly! "Oops! Can't eat that or the red space will be empty!"
Loved it!
I agree with you on most dollar store plastics. Not sure they are food safe. Standard brands like Rubbermaid I will buy.
14:44 I'll wait 😂😂😂 Your delivery is impeccable!
I do the dollar store because I live in a smaller town and don't have a lot options unless I order online. I live in Canada and even just to do IKEA is a y hr drive. Trying to find some closet organizers and can't even find those
I 100% agree about the food storage containers! I store mine on in the upper cabinet and with all the lids on.
All of my food storage containers are stored with their lids on! YES! Makes it so much easier and I buy less.
It kind of worked, but now that we're settled down in our new condo, and have a much better organizing system here, I was excited to be able to throw the hanging shelf away.x)
Our previous condo was shaped in a way that created difficult spaces.
Totally agree about the lids and containers. I always store mine together. And you don't need a lot of them.
When it comes to my storage food containers. I try to nest them, or stack alike with all matching lids stacked on top. Though there are some with the lids seperated due to limited space. Such is life. ☮️
That’s basically what I do too. I need more than three, and don’t have that much space!
Great video!! I am going to seriously try the lid with the container!
Haha loved this video so much the ad was chefs kiss 😂 I’m guilty of using the fabric shelving in my wardrobe and agree it’s not good I need to replace it 😅
OMG...I could not agree with you more. I've noticed that your organizing techniques are 'user friendly' and thank you for that. I love your channel.
No death in heaven. No chicken to eat. Genesis diet is herbs fruit and seeds.
I have used plastic plummets from fruit tomato's each to organise. It did look pretty too.
I have an in-between wire rack -- no dusting, no falling through.
This is a great video and I agree with everything. My kitchen is so small I have to nest the food storage containers and lids do go missing sometimes
I'm with you 💯 on everything except storing containers with lids on .. I have a very organized container drawer I'd be happy to show you sometime 😂 But yeah, too much organizing is done with appearance, not functionality, in mind.
PS: Your ad break made me lol! 😆
I agree, and I think that YOU ARE HILARIOUS! Thanks for sharing!
