  • If you are a looking for practical refrigerator organizing and storage tips that go beyond the need to buy a million pretty matching plastic bins, this is the video for you! While I appreciate pretty matching bins (I am an organizer after all) the fridge is a place where I choose function over form every time because keeping your eggs in the wrong place in your fridge can result in them going bad faster! If you are interested in how to organize your fridge in a practical way, I'm going to provide some helpful tips for you!

Never stop "talking science". It's the main reason I can trust your recommendations. I get so tired of watching other YT channels and they have no idea why they are doing what they're doing (and they'll literally admit they have no idea why), just cause they seen someone else doing it. Love your science talk! =)

I LOVE science, am a perfectionist and like you, want and need to know the how’s and why’s of how things work to help them last longer, etc.. Therefore, I say to you, “ Keep bringing the science.BRING IT! Bring it ON “!! 😄The other “self proclaimed ‘experts’” were anything BUT that as I saw SO many mistakes in their videos. It drove me crazy. They were teaching people harmful information. They were the blind leading the blind. THANK you for actually doing your research. It is much appreciated and I respect you more for it. God Bless you and your endeavors and Be encouraged. Have a great day and thanks for making this video. 😄

“Function over form” is amazing advice! I often organize my fridge until it’s ready for a Pinterest beauty shot. But six months later, I’m playing Jenga every time I get groceries and looking for a lost and highly offensive dish. I’m here to hopefully find inspiration for a foolproof system and your advice is SOOOO helpful! 💚

Thank you! Somebody finally explains the science of fruits and vegetables in the fridge! Also, just want to say that if you are losing a lot of blood when Aunt Flo comes to visit, maybe get checked for fibroids. I had this problem and every doctor told me it was normal and put me on birth control. A savvy friend got me in to see her doctor who did an ultrasound. I had surgery to have them removed and then after I’d had my kids I had a hysterectomy. I could have bled to death because of the fibroids which no other doctor bothered to diagnose.

I love the idea of having a thermometer to check sections of the fridges temp! But it also depends on how much stuff you already have in the fridge.

Oh my! Thank you so much for all this info! I realized I'm doing so many things wrong. I store my milk in the fridge door and both my apples and bananas together. I always wondered what the crispers REALLY did. And I had no idea about the ethylene situation. This is EXACTLY what I needed!!! You just saved me so much money.

Hi Kay. I say no to tomatoes in the fridge. A good rule is to look at how foods are stored in the store. Tomatoes are typically stores in a bin, non refrigerated. Love your channel and Clover.

I think the rule about how things are stored and sold in the store is good for most things but not all. I recently learned that corn-on-the-cob should be refrigerated, which I did not do before because the stores sell it on tables so I thought the counter was the place to keep it. Learning new things all the time.

Once tomatoes are chilled below 55 degrees, genes in the tomato stop producing the compounds that make their flavor. So yes, do not refrigerate tomatoes, unless they are cut. At that point, you likely won’t store them for more than a day anyway.

It amazes me how much food people can put in their fridge.
I'm a minimalst and a vegan. My husband and son is not, but we still don't have tons of food.
We do eat a lot of produce and do not eat a ton of processed food as well. I have a small fridge so I literally have 4 containers 2 crisper drawers , and 1 free shelf. My freezer has 4 bins as well. It keeps me organized and minimal.

The Organized Soprano: I STILL USE THE GUIDE YOU MADE & SHARED! While I don't use Blu Apple, I do use the OXO Pyramid. I keep meaning to pick up the one that attaches to the side of the inside of the crisper bin (I only have the 1 bin for veggies but I do have a spare bin in there. The ONLY time I keep tomatoes in the fridge is when I've cut them up w/cucumbers & placed them in a diluted vinegar solution.
You aren't the only person who keeps dog treats in the fridge. Before my service dogs crossed the Rainbow Bridge (I didn't have them at the same time. My first was w/me for more than 6yrs when she was retired to live w/my animal-adoring SIL. That service dog reached a point where she wasn't able to work. My health took a nosedive too so while working w/my doctor on my health, I was on a waiting list for my last service dog, which worked out perfectly. I had home-training w/him, meaning the trainer came to me. I had been going thru a major lupus/sjogren's/fibro/osteo flare w/severe pain & high temps one day & semi-human the next. In addition, I was going thru getting injections in various joints too. My trainer was able to work around my schedule & how I felt by doing the req'd lectures (even tho I'm a multi-graduate of the service dog school) when I felt bad & then going out walking &/or to my doc appts when I was feeling better or had an appt. I was w/that service dog beyond his tentative retirement tho he was w/me & worked too right up until he crossed the Rainbow Bridge at more than than 15 & 1/2yrs old - these dogs & our geriatric cat who crossed the Rainbow Bridge at 16yrs old the year after my last service dog crossed, each had treats in the fridge.
I think I mentioned that we inherited my MIL's 9 (almost 10 now) yo toy fox terrier. She's with us permanently now. I keep her treats & the add-ins that I put in her kibble in a specific place in the fridge. DH & I both have a section of the fridge for medicine too. Everything is in it's own area within a container so there's no crossing with anything else & it stays the right amount of cold.
If you don't mind my asking, what is a 'bully stick?' I used to get beef bones from our local grocery store owner. He'd have the butcher save them for my service dogs. I need to ask him to have them hold onto a smaller size one for Tinker. I think she'd love it! The old girl doesn't like peanut butter, which is odd b/c every dog I have ever had loved peanut butter, but she loves everything else, esp if my husband finds it edible. The dog loves salad greens too! Each time I tear up greens for our salad, I tear her some in small bites to mix in her bowl, often with a few cooked carrots & a bit of organic fruit to make it more pasty so she will slow down eating rather than inhale everything.

@@TheOrganizedSoprano So wanted to get back to you sooner on this but we had a busy couple days. I crashed almost as soon as we got home last night. (the new birch butcher block top for my kitchen island wasn't even unloaded last night - BEAUTIFUL! My island's top needs some work to smooth the top b4 the block can be added but it'll give me few inches added space on top. It's actually a repurposed hutch cabinet w/o the hutch top, tho we might be getting a whole other like it but w/the top portion; these are some 40+yrs old. We have the matching kitchen table w/cushioned chairs; table's really too big but it'd cost some $400-$500+ to buy one smaller in this style. The hutch base can be found tinyurl.com/y2wdyxgh. A BIL used to be part owner & worked w/the company. It's quality can't be beat & never goes outta style).
Told hubby about the Bully sticks & what they are. He laughed. Tinker is an almost 10yo toy fox terrier who has never been spayed (tho that's coming soon as humanly & financially possible w/help from a BIL/SIL). Tinker's never been bred or even attempted to breed. DH said, "Hmmm, I'm sure old Tinker-Girl would just LOVVEEEEE one of those! Get her a pack of those!" lmao! 🤣😄😉🤦‍♀️😊 Yeah, he has a twisted sense of humor. Tinkerbell was out w/us all day yesterday. She has terrible separation anxiety & doesn't like to be alone even if we are at home with her. I insisted that we bring her with us. I checked at Petco yesterday but couldn't remember the name of the Bully sticks; I did look for a kennel cage that was on their website but they didn't have any. I'm trying to find a 24x18x19 that is supposed to be like $20.99 to $25.99 to help Tinker w/the last remnants of housetraining issues but they only had $80 to $300 kennel cages. At least I was able to get her a new harness. The one we bought after she came home w/us is way too big & can't be taken in at all but then again she has lost approx 4lbs since then too. She's gone from 14+lbs down to just over 8lbs & might be a bit smaller. I'll definitely keep a check out for the Bully Sticks. I'm sure she'll love them regardless but maybe even more so for the reasons DH thinks she will. LOL!

just discovered this video as I am trying to organize my refrigerator so it's most efficient. I looked at the Ethylene list, THANK YOU, and I can't find celery? Is this a sensitive one?

I think celery is sensitive! I usually keep this pretty isolated anyway

Alton Brown, Food Scientist, says that if tomatoes drop below 50° (their growing season is over when 50° arrives) a chemical compound called (Z)-3-hexanol switches off; permanently. I believe it was something like the cell walls break and release the water, which causes the structure of the fruit to break down (mealy.)
    I miss Good Eats
Thanks for this video. I appreciate food science and seeing these fridge organization videos with milk in the door urges me to not take their advice seriously.

Some people keep their eggs on the counter top, here in the uk in the shops eggs are not kept in the fridges so some people store them that way when they bring them home.

I didn't think to keep the milk in the coldest part of the fridge. The fricking bag of carrots up there are freezing no matter what. I wonder if something is wrong?
Bully sticks rock according to our Meya. Clover is a lucky dog.

Then there's the ethylene!! I just keep the smelly veges, like onions and bell peppers, away from the rest. Why'd I watch this?! I'm not changing it!!

Bananas NEVER in the fridge. Tomatoes on the counter only, not in the fridge until they are cut.
