    Here is a low-budget hack for lettuces that can get you through until you get a "real" keeper: take a gallon ziplock bag, line it with 2 regular size or 3-4 select-a-size paper towels, or a bit of sack cloth or linen. Insert leafies with the cloth/paper towel acting as a liner. Seal the bag, leaving a little air inside. Stab several holes CAREFULLY and gently into the plastic bag with a paring knife or other pointy thing.
    This can help them last a week to two!

    This video was very encouraging to me. I watched all these aesthetically pleasing videos of fridge organization with all their pretty clear bins. So my husband said I didn’t need any bins lol and so I went to cleaning and organizing my fridge without them. I was so disappointed in my fridge and then realized it was because my fridge didn’t look like these Pinterest type videos.
    Then I found your videos and watched about three of your fridge videos and now I see I organized my fridge correctly according to what you said about the cold areas and the crisper drawers. Now I am happy with my fridge because I see that the food goes where it is supposed to go and will last longer. Thank you!!

    Thank you, Kay! After much dithering I just bought a new counter depth refrigerator. So we went from a 27 cubic foot fridge to a 21 cubic foot fridge. As I was trying to figure out whether we could fit our food (I cook a lot from scratch) in there, I also watched your videos and planned my zones and ethylene/non ethylene crispers. Everything turned out great, and the produce is lasting a lot longer, so I’ve less food waste. Thank you for all the helpful information!
    The blue apple and the herb keeper really are great, too. I was using the plastic bag over the glass of water before (a herb keeper was a recent purchase) but I really like my upgrade.

    Thanks for the Blue Apple tip! As for bins, a few years ago, I picked up some second-hand Container Store clear drawers that the original owner used for computer cables and office supplies. Our renter-basic fridge just didn't have enough good drawer space, so I've got three of them on the top shelf for butter, cream cheese, fancy cheeses. They stack easily, glide well, provide a nice smooth surface to stack yogurt containers (versus the wire racks in the fridge.) When I went to find more, I was super bummed to see all the organizing bins in the Kitchen area of Container store had the cutout handles/holes. Then I found my exact bin over by Closet Organization. Turns out they're small shoe drawers, still totally available, and actually cheaper than those drawers named after that organizing show. So I guess my tip to others is not to be limited by how someone else categorizes something.

    I googled why we should store eggs pointy end down after hearing you say that. Lol (I’m a curious type) It is because the yolk is kept more centered and bacteria is kept away from it and the white is less bacteria friendly. Thanks for caring more about keeping food from going bad than the whole ROYGBIV Pinterest picture for your fridge.

    Avocado and egg, huh? I tend to put mine next to the apples, as we like them ripe.
    I’m in Europe and do keep my eggs in the fridge - maybe not necessary, but it’s easier for me. They go on a shelf in a plastic egg tray some of the eggs I bought came in one day.
    The milk and juice go in the door in our fridge, though I know that temperature-wise it might not be the best, but as we’re a big family, it’s not really a concern. Milk gets finished in the next 24h, and juice in 2 to 3 days. :-)
    I do have some clear bins in the fridge (leftover packets of sauce, bags of grated cheese, etc) because otherwise stuff tends to get forgotten in the back. A couple of fruits-and-veggies Sistema bins (green grid only on the bottom and just a filtet, no adjustable vent, but it works well all the same) and a big closed bin for our Stack of Cheese.
    As for you ”food huggers”, Ikea has a similar product (thin silicone), and I’m rather satisfied by them. Can’t remember its name right now, though...
    Great refresher, Kay, thank you!

    My fridge is really empty cause I stock more in the freezer and use the fridge mostly for dairy, condiments, and left overs. Which is why I am considering getting a retro mini fridge 7 cu ft and/or a separate 7 cu ft freezer. I don't like cold beverages most of the year so I don't store drinks in the fridge (only milk and juice). I add some ice for ice tea or root beer, but water I don't and juice I don't.

    • @sheilaspastelrainbowvision
      @sheilaspastelrainbowvision 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nataliebutler I only eat so much so I don't like to overstock and end up wasting food I don't finish or that goes bad before I get to it. I also prefer food fresh so I have more ready to make options in my freezer. My fridge is small, but not mini. Bigger that 7 cu ft, but smaller than a traditional American fridge. It is a rental unit so the kitchen is small overall.

    Great info :) I have some produce keeper type bins for my fridge. It's a counter depth model and the 3 drawer bins aren't big enough to store all the produce. LIke your lettuce keeper, they have a reservoir for a bit of water and adjustable vents for airflow. My problem area seems to be the top shelf where all the small containers end up. Some are migrating to the back....never to be seen again. Maybe just one bin could corral some of those little guys?

    • @randomharts
      @randomharts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s exactly what I do (and I also have a counter depth fridge) with all the random half used jars and sauces. They have a home on the top shelf of my fridge in a large clear plastic bin and when I need them, I just pull the whole bin out of the fridge. It’s so much easier than rummaging for items or worse yet not knowing the item is rotting away in the back of the fridge. It also works well to limit the tendency to over-buy…if the bin doesn’t have room, I don’t buy anything new. Hope this helps😉

    I have chimed in about your fridge stuff already but i do wanna ask you re herbs...you are so good with plants why not just keep a long narrow container in the kitchen window and grow your favs? Cheaper. Fresher. Easier! Growing your own basil alone might finance the whole herb garden. Just pick what you need as you need it and theres no preserving, no waste.

    • @TheOrganizedSoprano
      @TheOrganizedSoprano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Growing basil indoors is very tricky as it LOVES hot, sunny weather and creating these Ideal conditions inside can be very difficult. Some do well inside but others really struggle and you’ll end up doing much more maintenance on them than on the regular houseplants. I just got a little grow setup so that might help so we’ll see how they do! Plus cilantro requires resowing every few weeks since it grows and then kind of poops out lol

    I’d love help with a problem. We just moved to a house where the only kitchen drawers are in the island and they are too tiny for most of the cutlery trays I can find. There are 4 that are 13.5” deep by 10” wide by 2.5” tall, and three that are 13.5” deep by 10” wide by 5.5” tall.
    So far I’ve tried grippy liner from Con-tact and the silverware all still rolls around. I’ve also tried putting onions in the lowest drawer and they molded (not as cool and dark as I thought, I guess?)! I’m basically having a lot of trouble making good storage choices for these weird drawers. Maybe you could do a video about this?

      I oftentimes buy a small bag of avocados but don't use them in time. I normally throw out overripe fruit all the time. I haven't done it once since using this tip.

    I purchase the smaller clamshells of greens (spring mix and spinach). I put a paper towel in the bottom and leave the greens in the clamshell, but they're often slimy within a week. I live alone so no one to help consume them. I'm thinking the OXO GreenSaver container might be the way to go?

      Try the bluapple Kay uses in the video. I just bought a new refrigerator and started using them and I’ve noticed a big difference in the life of my fresh produce. I also follow Kay’s ethylene guidelines s best as I can, and that helps as well.

    Have you ever noticed those super organized refrigerators never have leftovers? What do they do with their leftovers?

      YAS! That was my question! Do these people never have leftovers? That takes up a hunk of my fridge whenever I actually cook lol

    OMG I have the same lettuce container- several years also. Love your channel. I am 77 yo, but still look for storage ideas. I am constantly buying cutting boards because I can't figure out where to store them, or which are food safe - eco-friendly. Any suggestions?

      I have them in a drawer, but I used to store them with my baking sheets vertically!

    Eggs don’t perish quickly. I keep mine out of the fridge in a metal basket in a cooler spot in my kitchen.

      Right?? I started wondering if it was an American thing. I live in the Caribbean and I had never heard about eggs expiring like that and having to watch for "expiry dates".

    There's an ad for a food delivery service that I think, has discounted food, or something, but in the ad, the lady brags "My fridge is PACKED!" If she's got a big family, I guess it's good, but it looked so jammed...how could anyone find anything, and imagine the spoiled food?🙄🤦🏻‍♀️
    I immediately think of you cringing if you see it. 😂

    I use those clear containers in my pantry, craft room, and other areas of the house, but NOT THE FRIDGE!

    If it comes in a jar or squeeze container, it goes in the door.
