    One cool thing I did recently was bought a 9mm conversion barrel for my Glock 22 gen 3. With the high price of .40 ammo I now shoot my G22 with Glock 17 mags. And there are crazy good Glock 22 trade in prices at gun stores and pawn shops. I found a Glock 23 in great condition for $350. With a 9mm conversion barrel ($115) and Glock 19 mags I’m good to go with a Glock 23/19.

      kevcom82 I have one for my 22. You have to make sure to use the 9 mags. I also have an Advanced 22 LR conversion slide and a 357 Sig barrel as well. Pretty cool to have 4 guns in one!

    I started my LE career with the .45 ACP being my duty round. On my person, I carried 25 .45 ACP cartridges (using 2 spare 8 round magazines). With my current agency, I started carrying the .40 S & W (Glock) but we now use the 9mm Luger (Glock). I currently have 52 9mm cartridges on my person, which is a huge step up from the .45 ACP. With the new (lighter) ballistic vest and the lighter gun (glock), I feel my gear weight is about the same it was when I carried the .45 ACP. Your video is spot-on point and the history lesson was much appreciated!

    I loved your closing statement by the way... So many people act like you can only own/carry one caliber, and get quite butthurt if you don't own/carry what they choose. Any true gun enthusiast understands that there is no such thing as a bad caliber/round. From the micro mouse guns, to the full sized (and oversized), they all have their application.

      22lr, 22mag, 38 special, 9mm, and 357 magnum is what I use. At least out of handguns. I carry a 22 magnum 90% of the time. I used to carry my big ol' 357 100% of the time, that eventually switched to a 9mm pistol, then a snub 38, now it is my 22 mag.

      @Focke Wulf
      Too spensive. . .
      If you are going to pay as much as 357 Sig costs, you may as well shoot 44 magnum and have the ability to take deer or hogs. IMO if you are going to pay rifle prices for a handgun round, you may as well get rifle-esque performance.

    • @MegaAppleshit
      @MegaAppleshit 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Focke Wulf
      How much is is per round if you include shipping? 30 cents per round ain't bad, but if you're buying online, you have to factor in shipping. Have you gel tested anything yet? I'd bet that a 115 grain XTP at 1500 fps would be a badass little loading.

    • @johnryan6658
      @johnryan6658 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Focke Wulf the problem with the 357 SIG is bullet expansion. It's usually not as good as 9mm of the same design. It penetrates deeper, but 9mm penetrates deep enough (12 to 18 inches) and gets better expansion. If they used 9mm type bullets in the 357, it would certainly solve the expansion issues. However, you may have a new problem if that greater expansion leads to under penetration.

    The surplus market for .40 cal guns are actually pretty good. I got a police trade in. Rarely shoot it but keep some ammo in reserve for it because why not

  • @darthhodges
    @darthhodges 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The FBI recently transitioned back to 9mm from .40 and several reasons have been cited. The .40 caliber firearms don't last as long as 9mms. If they have to repair or replace the guns more often the cost is higher. Also, ammo costs less in 9mm. Perhaps most importantly, they were finding many of their younger agents were having difficulty qualifying on the .40 but could in 9mm and they were seeing similar problems in reports of shootings in the field, agents shooting .40 missed a lot more. There is a valid argument that more training could solve those problems but that's more ammo, more wear on guns, and more time, all of which cost money. Imagine that, a government agency making a cost effective decision.

    Very interesting subject. Well presented. I use 9mm because of firearm choice. I’m not going to argue that it’s the best, but that it’s what I’ve owned for over a decade. Like you had mentioned, knowing your firearm and being proficient with it is very important. Second is ammo technology. I use to use Golden Sabers, but now I use HSTs.
    No matter what firearm you choose or caliber, know what is available and the most effective for what you are using it for. Someone with a high end firearm with a high power caliber who lets it collect dust can be outshot by someone with a HiPoint who practices and maintains it regardless of the caliber.

    The Luger did "catch on" in the U.S. military trial, but when the U.S. requested 200 more .45 acp Lugers from DWM for further testing, they declined to continue with the trial, so Savage, who had submitted the third place pistol at the time, was given the chance after DWM declined.

    The 70-80 hit % wasn’t in “Testing”. That number was determined by analysis of officer involved shootings. Count the casings, count the holes in the bad guy. The reason for the high miss rate, or low hit rate, was because officers are very often RETURNING fire after they have been ambushed.

    this is why modern 9mm is honestly the best round. Hollow points leave wounds as big or bigger than .45 ball ammo, better penetration and barrier blindness, optimized to have the perfect amount of penetration, expansion, and also ammo capacity and shot placement. They also have two or more legal rounds that are even good for armor piercing. Paul Harrel shot through a 3a AND a 2a vest at the same time with a 92FS with Fort Scotts TUI 80 grain 9mm ammo.

    In 1995 when I wanted a handgun but was too poor, all I could do was read about them. The 9mm vs 45ACP question was debated in every magazine. PCP was a problem prior to that. Officers carrying 45ACP weapons could "stop the fight". Officers with 9mm (Glocks) weapons could not and many died proving it. Guys on PCP could whip a whole precinct it seemed. With this phenominal strength they were tough to bring down. A 45ACP would junk them. I dont buy the hype of the newer cartridges. I’m not saying I wont shoot them. Im just saying that shooting gelatin is different from shooting bad guys. Enjoyed the video a lot. Thanks.

    i really love my Browning Hi-Power and I have carried it for 30 years and it shoots great ,but I have a friend who is convinced that his Glock is what I should carry with me while I am squirrel hunting with my 22 rifle to protect myself from all the Black Bears around here he thinks my old Ruger # screw in 44 mag is just not gonna protect me like a Glock would because I carry only 5 rounds in it and he claims the Glock will take a 30 some round magazine and I tried to tell him all I will need is one of my 300 grain Hornady xtp's and the critter will give up the ghost lol but he don't think my old single action is enough gun to take out a bear because of the auto's quickness of follow up shots .I told him I had never needed to shoot any of the Deer i have taken more than once lol and I have met some very large Black Bears here with some really nice sized heads on them some would push 5oo lb's or even 300 lb's and the 44 just feels better for me and even with the recoil it is not that hard to get a quick second shot off if you need it

      I have never thought about ever getting rid of my old Browning ,it was the very first firearm I bought after I got home from the Army back in 1983 .lol my wife says I get guns and never sell them and I told her the reason I get them is because I want them lol she told me she still did not see why I would need 2 357's lol so i held up my hands and said because I have 2 hands lol,but one is my little sp101 with the 3 inch barrel and the other is my Dad's old coltputhon and even my wife tells me that I can't sell or ever trade that old 6 shooter off.and I would never even think of it .but I do love my old Hi-Power and it shoots great still yet and it is one of the 2 handguns that I have clipped the heads off of Ruffed Grouse I have killed about 3 Grouse with that old pistol ,and they are pretty tasty when you roast them over a camp fire and they are great with a little salt on them cooked that way.lol so I got a little 35mm film bottle for some sea salt and I carry it with me lol.

      @@fraudgod7809 Maybe not with a 9mm Glock, but a 10mm Glock has killed everything from polar bear and Cape Buffalo to elk and wild hogs. Glock 20s are issued to park rangers in Neatherlands and Alaska to defend against big bears, carried by snowmobilers and backpackers, used for defense against moose, and Uncle Ted used one to dispatch a Cape Buffalo. So you really can kill just about anything with the right Glock.
      I carry a Glock 20 in the woods. In NW MT I have as much as chance of stumbling on some punks disposing of a meth cook site as I do of running into a grizzly. Fifteen rounds of 10mm Auto with a 200 gr bullet over 1200 fps gives me the energy of the .357 Magnum with a bigger, heavier bullet, and the confidence to deal with anything I come across in the woods. A .44 would be better for big bears, but might leave me hanging if I end up getting in a gunfight with tweakers, Neo-Nazis, government separatists, weed farmers, ect.
      Self defense often ends up being a response to an ambush. Ask anyone with training and they will tell you that the size or power of your gun isn't what determines if you live through an ambush. Response time, firepower, and violence of action is what gets you through an ambush. Capacity matters in a gunfight. Nobody ever got into a gunfight and said "gee, I wish I had less ammo," or "man, I wish I had to reload more often." When it comes to all-around defense, no other handgun cartridge offers the versatility and capabilities of the 10mm Auto. And when it comes to 10mm Autos, few of them on the market offer the durability, light weight, and capacity of the Glock 20. That is why it is very popular in these parts, maybe even more so now days than the .44 Mag.

    The thing I've noticed is that .40 cal has a snappier, sharper recoil than either the .45acp or the 9mm, regardless of which model guns are being fired. Despite that, my CZ-75 in .40 is the one I shoot most accurately, even though I've been shooting a lot of 9mm lately. Bottom line is that I can put a group of .40 cal rounds quickly into a grapefruit-sized target at 10 yards. I can't do that with a 9mm yet.

    • @ZombieWilfred
      @ZombieWilfred 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, .40 is the snappiest, but it's also technically the most powerful... People have this misconception that because the .40 s&w cartridge fits in between the 9mm and .45 in terms of cartridge and projectile size that it is also in between 9mm and .45 in terms of power, but that's not actually the case. The average .40 S&W loading is actually more powerful than the average .45 acp (at least on paper, in terms of ft-lbs or joules of energy.) I have all three calibers and love all three.

    • @ZombieWilfred
      @ZombieWilfred 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I shoot .45 most accurately only because of the very fine 1911 I shoot it out of... Choice of gun can be a bigger factor in accuracy than choice of round. Although .45 acp's slowness and heft makes it trickier to shoot long range with. You really gotta lob those lumps of lead in there, haha! Quite an arc to its long range trajectory...

I don't see all the hype about it, does it work, yeah but so does the 38 Special, 357 Mag, 38 Super +P , 45 ACP, 44 Special etc, etc. Round count for EDC matters little, most are over in seconds, some think if I have 15 rounds and can " spray and pray" for I have a lot of extra ammo. This is part of the reason cops proficiency with a pistol has diminished, I know I was a LEO some just can't shoot at all.

    The 9mm being a good choice has nothing to do with "round technology getting better" that's what idiots say, who didnt look at scientific research. The FBI themselves researched all data on ballistics and shootings, and released there findings in the late 80s, called FBI handgun wounding effects, that paper shows, that at best all pistol rounds perform the same, so a gun with higher capacity and less recoil is more advantageous. It was FBI pencil pushers who went with the 10mm against the advisement of everyone who actually researched the handgun ballistics, that department in the FBI continued their studies, and data collection from other research, and released another version if the same report just a few years ago, and if you read that, and the one from 30 years ago, the findings and conclusions are basically the same, almost word for word, theres just even more evidence now, and finally reason won, and that's why the FBI went to 9mm.

      I don't think the maker of this video is an idiot, but you are right (to a point, of course, because a. 22 lr is not the same as a. 460 S&W).
      Between "service pistol calibers" the difference is pretty insignificant.

    I think those FBI agents had worn out 9mm barrels. My 9mm barrel wore out, and the only way to know was to use a Chronograph. My gun was as bad as 700fps. When it was supposed to be 1100 fps. The bullet could Peirce the skin, but won't do any real damage.

    I own them all, except the 45acp. Never been a fan of the flying brick. I just wish glock would make a 10mm in the compact size, not the subcompact, the compact. model 29 to the model 20? come on glock!

    *Here is the rub.*
    Most, if not all of these pistol/revolver bullet test *are not important.*
    The reason is ALL handgun bullets are weak. Weak in stopping power & weak is killing power.
    So don't put too much time & effort in thinking - "Oh, I should carry this or that caliber."
    Put your time & effort in going to the range, gun school, getting drills done, etc. so you can hit your target in the deadly triangle.
    If you want stopping power & a real effective weapon get a shotgun or rifle. I would never hunt with a handgun!
    If you want or need a handgun to be powerful pick any mainline caliber from .380 to full power 10mm & shoot accurately in the right spots.
    NOTE:
    The FBI, the US Army, etc. have figured this out and are leaving the 10mm, the 45 ACP, & the 40 S&W for the 9mm.
    This is from studies that show all main calibers are about the same in stopping power/killing power.

    This was one of the best videos I seen in a while!
    You are correct "carry whats good for you". Me I have critical defense 9mm. My prefered ammo is basic .147 gr JHP.
    Yep, the 80% on target is still an issue with LE.
    I know cops from back in my time early 70's took the issues Colt .38 to the range at least once a month. Back then it was rare to even have to draw your revolver, never mind shoot someone.
    Today is different. Most citizens spend 100's of more hours at a range the police do?
    Most departmdnts use dis-similar ammo to requalify than cops carry ammo? Some cops have to spend two days to requalify since they shoot so poorly.
    I always say I don't comment on what gun a person carries or ammo they use. I just want folks to feel comfortable and safe with what they carry!

    So I’m a lifelong 45 guy. I love it. I’m now 42 years old and I went shooting the other day. I shot my 1911 and my Springfield XD. I found myself no longer enjoying the round. The recoil kind of wore me down. I shoot once a month at least so I know I’m not rusty. I my get a 9mm. I’ve never owned one.

      I used to own a .45 myself, I now own a Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 Compact 9mm. The recoil is much more manageable and I feel I can shoot much better. I think shot placement is key most of all with any caliber. There’s guys who have been shot multiple times with a .45 also. There’s a lot of factors that come into play. I think you’ll be happy with the 9, I’m pleased with mine.

    Great presentation. I think a big part of the return to 9mm by the FBI is related to their penetration standard of 12" - 18" max in gel. Once the 9mm meets that spec and it's clear officers can carry more rounds it has an advantage. Add that it's easier to fire follow up shots and their decision becomes obvious. That said, I have no problem carrying 40 S&W or 45 acp.
