I served in the 80's, and I was there for the transition to the M9. I was unimpressed with the performance of the 9mm, in FMJ form. A lot of folks say the newer bullet tech makes the 9 as good as the .45acp. What they fail to consider, is that that same technology is also being used in .45 ammo. I carry a .45acp pistol to this day, although I've transitioned to a Glock 21SF. I love the 1911, but a 9 round capacity seems inadequate in today's whiz-bang gizmo age. Both my Springfield 1911A1, and the Glock 21 have been 100% reliable in my hands, so that's not a factor in my decision. I would trust either piece with my life. It's just that with a factory Glock 21 mag holds 13+1, plus I carry two 17 rounders. so 48 rounds in three mags. it would take six 8 rd 1911 mags to have the same capacity. (Glock apologist 😂🤣✌🐸)
Bro. 1911 para ordenance for 45 acp also you can get double stack 1911 in 10mm. They even have 460 rowland turns a 1911 into a pocket howitzer. 460 rowland touches .44 magnum ballistics.

@@chrisnorris9473 There's actually a study called the Joint Agency Defensive Handgun Ballistics Test or something along those lines that tested various different types of rounds on a variety of different mediums. The conclusion was that .45ACP hollow points, on average, had a 50% larger permanent wound cavity than 9mm hollow points, and .45ACP hollow points also had the least degradation when going through barriers and the like (meaning it was the most reliable at expansion, too).
So basically, three rounds of 9mm is equivalent to two rounds of .45ACP, with the .45ACP being more likely to expand, too. Therefore, a 13+1 round capacity .45 Glock 21 actually has more firepower than a 17+1 round capacity 9mm Glock 17. 14/2=7 while 18/3=6. Even a 10 round extended magazine on a .45 single stack 1911 is equivalent to a 15 round capacity 9mm. 10/2=5 while 15/3=5.
And, of course, there's also the fact that even though the .45 is more reliable expanding than 9mm, in the event neither expand, the .45 still has a PWC that's 60% larger. So the axiom "a 9mm may expand but a .45 will never shrink" is also true.

My brother works as a trauma nurse on the Mexican border has daily gun shot victims.The two round they all pretty much die from are 45acp and 357 mag.

When chambered in the 1911 platform 40 cal is very much comparable to the 45 acp round as to energy and knock down ability. As current loading available.
With a benefit of a little longer range.
The usual line of pistols available for it, short barrels and lighter weight make it a poor performer. This is not a fault of the cartridge but rather a fault of the Gun design.

Ive heard this story about the 45cal being created to knockdown the Moros in the southern Philippines and now that you’ve mentioned it, that story has been confirmed. Legend has it that they were actually using some spiritual powers to endure bullet wounds or even evade bullets in the first place. Your gun history series is very informative and enjoyable. I recently bought a Glock 21 I will say it’s one of my favorite handguns wish I could’ve got into this handgun when I entered the gun world.
There are several departments using the Glock 21 in .45. I had always been a fan of the .45 and a Wilson Combat Commander was my carry gun back in the 80's and 90's. The sheriff's department I was at as a deputy went from P89 Rugers to the Glock 21. It was one of the best out of the box POI and POA pistols I had ever fired.

Some folks i.e. 9mm fanboys, like to argue that "stopping power" doesn't exist but if a 45 caliber bullet hits a target with more foot pounds of energy than a 9mm bullet then it logically will have a greater energy dump into the target, assuming of course both are well designed expanding hollow points.

The hole made by a .45acp is 50% larger by area than a 9mm. Multiply that by the depth of the wound and that's a lot more lost tissue. If you use ball ammo to insure an exit wound you have a really devastating wound. Browning was a genius, I'm not going to second guess him.
45 ACP is my favorite cartridge, My first gun is going to be a 1911 in 45 ACP and I hope I'm able to buy it soon!

I am 65 yrs. old, and have collected and shot guns since I was 14 yrs. old. The 1911/.45 acp is my favorite gun and round. I have more 1911s than I like to admit. However, in the last two years, I have discovered the 10 mm. I remembered the media failure of the "Bren Ten" and little else. So I purchased a Colt 1911, Delta Elite in 10 mm, and was extremely happy with the results. However, as in all of my guns, I am not going to carry a nice pistol, and have sweat, and use just wear the finish off. To remedy this problem, I purchased a Springfield MDX 5.25 inch barrel in 10 mm. Now I have a finish which will not be effected by body sweat and daily use, but is 10 mm with a 15 round magazine. I highly recommend it. The 10 mm will stop all "doped up animals" in their tracks when they attempt to rob & kill you.
I still carry a 45 ACP for the last 35 years. Have 1911 made in 1913. Tried the plastic guns, to light. Love the iron for recoil control and use as defense club
It might be just me but I've grown real fawn to the 40 , power of the 45 (with greater range) with capacity of a 9 (with much greater power hp/fmj doesn't matter) putting the 40 in a carbine your shooting 10mm velocities! (Magnum! Force!!) I hear people complain about recoil but I don't even feel the recoil anymore I think the 9 is snappier and the 45 hits my hand harder, the 40 is right in between (even price wise) and a good compromise imo. When I was a kid I felt the twisty/snappy recoil of 40 but with training and age I guess I've grown to it. Hell I feel my 380 mouse guns kick harder then 40s. But still no matter what hats off and much respect to the 45s as I feel it was the Cal that paved the way to just about everything... And shout outs to the cult 45s/357/38/3030/black powders as well... Respects! ✊😎
I like the 45 ACP hallow points for big shallow wounds. A nice HSTs that open up to .75 inches and penetrates about 14 inches... perfect for an apartment building or something or something like that... as long as you don’t miss 😳.

RVN 69-70 carried a 1911a1 and still do to this day. Effective and intimidating.
America has a love affair with the 45 ACP. At the time of the 45 ACP introduction it was pretty powerful. Time has moved on there has been improvements in bullets, powder as well as totally new cartridges have been created(375 mag, 40 S&W,10 mm, 44 mag ). actually the 45ACP is about as powerful as a 44 spl. All semi auto cartridges are compromised rounds to fit the grip.

Me too! The only time I don't have my 45acp on my side is when I have my 44mag there in its place. PERIOD! I can shoot my guns anytime I want. I just walk outside & shoot! Did I mention I live in the middle of our 7K acre ranch in Texas?
I don't know how I managed in the big city for 35+ years? I did buy a shit ton of guns when living there. I like living in the same house my gun safe is kept. Not 60 miles away in the big city. I've always had the ranch house but I was waiting to retire before moving out in the sticks for good. I retired last August & I can't believe a whole year has passed! I've only bought 4 guns in the last year... I've been busy playing on the ranch! You should see my shooting range. There is a whole living room set in the firing position. No TV or radio to dampen the mood. Just LOTS of FREEDOM, ammo & things to shoot.

I know I know, 9mm is king and all, superior engineering, capacity, better recoil blah blah blah. And yet I still choose to use .45 acp because it just works.
9mm is a fun round, and it's cheap (relatively) But bigger IS bigger. I don't CARE about long range (that's what rifles are for). For a handgun a close interpersonal engagement needs to be ended quick. Hard to argue with .45 ACP in that role. Save the 9 mike mike for the range. .357Mag in revolvers or .45ACP in an a pistol are for WORK.
A 45 acp can kill a man at 400 yards, 1911s can be modified to fire the 460 rowland which gives you .44 magnum ballistics in a 1911. Its a 110 year old war horse and still bosses modern pistols. Acurracy and reliability with a round the size of a musket ball.

An instructor of mine once posed the scenario; “you’re in a room and five Taliban are about to run in through the door. You can have any pistol with only five rounds, which do you choose?” 45 was the unanimous choice.

Simple choice 44 mag Da 4 inch barrel. Hollow points. If you can handle it. It is not very easy to use but very effective.

If I have to face 5 armed men, I'd better be able to get multiple hits on target, fast. I'd also better not be aiming for precise 5 for 5 hits...and I want all the ammo on board I can get!

I think the point of the exercise was you only having five total rounds in a pistol. Your choice, 5 shot snubbie, 5 shot 9mm auto, 5 shot 45 auto etc. Not sure I’d bet my life on five rounds of needle-thin 5.7.

My dad was a airborne ranger so I grew up on .45s and he always told me I only have to hit someone once with that .45 and they're going down and most likely wont make it. And that's what I was trained with so I know how to use it!

Happy New Year! Great video. I've shot a 1991 .45 for 20 years now, I bought my first .45 and never looked back. I have found the 1911 in .45 ACP to be accurate out to 100 yards, I've shot it in IPSC, trained with it for self defense and shot it long distance. I see no reason from a self defense stand point to have anything else. Mr Browning and Mr Cooper were both geniuses ahead of there time.
Well, the cons..... dated, parts heavy, low capacity. Not adjustable for small or left hands. Unsafe, single action design for duty use. Needs tuning to work well. Today, there are simpler actions, lighter in weight with more capacity.

I have always loved the .45acp. Don't get me wrong, i like anything that goes pew pew, but ever since shooting my great grandfather's 1911A1, I have just been in love with the caliber. I have carried a .45acp for about 4 years now in the G21 and I don't regret the purchase.

Great video. I just got a S&W M&P 45 2.0 in FDE for my new carry gun. 45ACP has always given me a sense of security just from the historical performance. Yes 9mm has improved, but it still doesn't weigh 230 grains.

@@eddielee9262 The same can be said of 9x19mm, .303 British, 8x57mm, and when it comes to 7.92x54R... it's the oldest cartridge still in military use today. Still, what I really am grateful to Mr Browning for is the M1911 itself, Browning A5, and the M2 (although the first two are a lot easier for me to get my hands on than the latter, as I don't work for Uncle Sam).
Pistols (and even rifles) don't win wars, but compared to contemporary designs, the M1911 was leaps and bounds ahead of most other autoloading designs available in the early 20th century. A fun fact: Rambo helped improved the design of the M1911. (A civilian named Marcellus Rambo, that is!)
The funny thing about the most innovative and influential firearm designers in history is that virtually _none_ of them were infantrymen, and only one (Mikhail Kalashnikov) was actually a soldier, and he was a tanker. Only John Moses Browning was actually a gunsmith by trade. Eugene Stoner was an aerospace engineer; Hiram Maxim was a bicycle mechanic, etc. I guess that goes to show that you don't need to be a doorkicking, pipe-hitting Tier 1 operator to know something about guns! And in our age of tacticool beards, tattoos, shaved heads, and foul language, we shouldn't automatically discount the opinions of those who don't have military backgrounds when it comes to designing effective firearms.
@Brad Roberts I would not say it won the war or was carried by few, speaking of WWII the american solider & the garand won the war, however 1.9 Million M1911's were procured by the military during WWII, so I would not say they were few in numbers, so saying "it didn't win shit" when it was present & in use by many, makes you sound like an idiot who makes a three word post with the CAP'S LOCK ON!
The .45 ACP matches the velocity and energy, as well as the bullet weight of the .45 Scoffield (S&W) revolver cartridge. I don't know if John Browning was aware of that, or even knew it, when he designed the .45 ACP.
Just curious with modern age and fact that 10mm is better why not 10mm
My Dad was a medic (WWII, Korea, Vietnam). They trained by having a sheep or hog shot through the organs and then they had to treat the gunshot and preserve life. Going to war it is better to test on an animal then just have theory and end up in a combat zone.

Im very comfortable carrying the 45 ACP in ALASKA against bears, in CA against mountain lions and bears, however, some of the bears are very big, make sure you have extra magazines and dont miss the head shots, because a bears claws with one hit alone and your FINISHED!

Here in the Philippines .45 acp is the caliber of choice by most if not all motorcycle assassins...more effective evidently than the easily available 9mm(service caliber of PI military and LE officers).

I carried the 1911 for 25+ years in the Army,three tours in VN as a combat medic. When I deployed to Saudi we were ordered to turn in our 1911s and draw the Berreta 9mm. Almost cried all the way to Saudi! The 9mm with modern loads and bullets is much better weapon,in 1990 in the Army we drew FMJ! Hated that.
I enlisted in 1987. At the time, the 1911 was still in use but being phased out of being the standard issue sidearm. I shot both the Colt 1911 and the 9mm, the 9mm is trash. Jamming issues, slides breaking, no stopping power. Which is why my go to and my personal sidearm will always be a .45 ACP.

The 45 ACP and 357 Magnum still reign supreme, no doubt about it. 40 S&W is also a very effective round, and the 10mm is downright vicious. However, if given the choice, l personally would never trust my life to a 9mm. Ever.

I love the 9x19mm, but I also respect de .45 acp. I can't say the same thing about the .40SW, the "Ducky Calliber", as I use to call it.
Agreed and .45 I call .45aarp because I see it as for old people and .40 as .40 short and weak. That's why I'm a 10mm person, better than any of those calibers, more capacity and more modern
There is nothing wrong with the 40. Round . There is a problem with the guns they make for it. They put it in the guns designed for 9 mm. Which is to small for it.
The 40 and the 10 mm are appropriate for 1911 sized gun platform. Yet Noone wants that.

If you cannot or are not willing to master any of the major calibers, use a 9. Not just the ability to shoot it but to run it. If you cannot operate the slide of a major caliber (.40, .357 SIG, 10MM .45) Then use a 9, No matter how well you can shoot any of the majors

Happy New Year! One interesting thing about the history of the .45 ACP is the conflict that led to its development was a shameful period in American history. The U.S. should not have decided to emulate the Europeans and colonize the Philippines; quite a few people in the U.S. at the time thought it was a very un-American thing to do. Still, good things can come from bad times...
I honestly believe though that a lot of adoration for the .45 ACP is largely due to the M1911, which is one of the finest autoloading pistols ever designed. If the round were associated with a pistol that did _not_ work well, I doubt that it would have endured for as long. There are many cartridges that were excellent ideas (e.g. .280 British, .276 Pederson) that never took off because the weapons they were associated with were never adopted for general usage.
In short, I believe that the .45 ACP is an excellent cartridge, but I do think that it owes its much continued usage to the genius of John Moses Browning in producing what was essentially a near _perfect_ pistol.
I must ask, though: after the tests, what did they do with all the meat? It seems like a waste to just throw it all away when they were done! I did recall reading somewhere that the Thompson-LaGarde tests actually proved the superiority of the bottlenecked .30 Luger cartridge in some ways (it was the only one on the first day that killed the cattle with one shot). However, the Army was adamant on having a .45-caliber cartridge, so they tinkered a bit with the operational procedures until they got what they wanted.
That being said, most people on _either_ side of a firearm chambered in .45 ACP haven't complained about the caliber's effectiveness as a man-stopper.
Good presentation but, do some additional fact checking. .45 ACP 220 grain defense ammo in +P has a muzzle velocity of 990 FPS, a big chunk of jacketed hollow point lead moving very fast. Close to 9mm 147 grain chunk of jacketed hollow point in terms of FPS. .45 ACP when it comes to defensive calibers has the greatest Cenetic knock down power, 2nd in Cenetic energy next to the top end 10mm. Reguardless of the platform, i.e. 1911, Glock 21, Glock 30, etc. The .45ACP creates hydrostatic shock to the human body besides the devastating temporary and permanent wound cavities which is the destruction of tissue. Lookup the meaning of hydrostatic shock.
My personal favorite platform is a 1911.

The Army at the time still used horses. They wanted a modern day handgun of the same stopping power as the 45 Colt revolver. Seems the old timers were quite smart today we still use the 45 and are now dumping the 5.56 , because you know the old timers said it won't do as expected. Wallah, 50 odd years later they figured that out too, shoulda listened in the beginning.
Pistols were never to be used as long range weapons , they were for contact distances of 50 yards or less. Why would you try to engage a adversary at 100 yards with a pistol when your primary firearm is a rifle.

To this day, I still see peace officers in Texas, young and old, carrying the 1911 .45 ACP. From Texas Rangers trickling down to Sheriff deputies to Houston Police to small town police.
Not everybody, of course, not even majority but quite a few. Not uncommon to see. Rangers loved it since it came out in 1911
