    Thanks, FC for the interesting video on these Federal Premium reduced-recoil slugs. Those wads are different than any I have seen. Keep the videos coming! You do a great job presenting the material.

    I used these slugs in a Mossberg 590 with an 18.5 in smooth bore, and got .73 inch groups this morning, at 50 yards. Great ammo.

      Richard Kendall - That beats my 2" iron sighted group at 100 with Winchester Foster factory slugs in H & K. Good shootin' there, Richard -- We don't have ready access to factory slug components for our own reloading FC Steve

    FC45LC, you have been a true inspiration. I have expanded my reloading repertoire and melted down my first batch of range scrap. I use an indoor range and they sold me a 5 gallon bucket of scrap for $20. 73 Lyman ingots so far with about 25% left to go. Not a bad deal in my mind.
    Thank you for the concerned education you are giving us. There is nothing that can replace experience. And, experience you have.
    I'd also like to thank JOHNNY'S RELOADING BENCH, ELVIS AMMO, FULL LEAD TACO, and RELOADER DUDE.

      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ozark Spirit - That is a great deal...the fact that you got the 5 gal bucket without having to expose yourself to lead dust in the pick up is a major major advantage...I'd pay that $20 at the drop of a hat if our range had that policy... Best to ya, FC

    There are a lot of credible sources that say the ribs don't cause spin, but we found that the ribs DO cause an appreciable spin- enough angular momentum to keep the slug stable in flight.

      TAOFLEDERMAUS - Thanks for dropping in - Your channel has the best and most diverse stuff on shotgun slugs bar none...and your slow mo stuff is really neat...Somehow I must have missed seeing this information in my many traipsings over to your channel...I know that I'm always checking out other videos, but I didn't know that the "Big Boys" ever did the same...Best Regards to ya, FC

    Hi DId you chronograph these rounds with some different barrel lengths to see what they actually do?

    Hey FC45Lc I recently started reloaded shotshell. My local gun range is outdoors and any old hulls I scavenge have been left outside in the weather and get kinda crummy. I know you can't wet tumble shotshell. My question is what can I do to clean these old cases up enough to run through my reloader without damaging the dies. Have a good day

  • @foxterp1
    @foxterp1 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an improved cylinder, will it be safe to fire these true ball slugs through it? or will they damage the choke?

    I've been wanting to try something like this with the lyman 525 with the plastic ball in the base

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Chuck Finley - Thanks for your comment. -- But it's that plastic wad that is the trip. We can use overpowder obturators (but they aren't like the Truball obturator at all), then fiber wads or filler wads. But finding a plastic ball that fits, plus a consistent indent on the top wad to fit the back end of the plastic ball will be a bit of jerryrigging. Hopefully, you can find the solutions. It's very hard to beat a system that is proprietary designed mated together. Have a great day, FC

    • @chuckfinley3152
      @chuckfinley3152 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      FortuneCookie45LC proprietary wads for the 525 would be amazing, i wonder if claybuster or downrange could do it

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chuck Finley - But we would need the 525s to mike at .730 at the base and .729" at the front, then have a fitted back end plastic post wad 720" in diameter The slug as currently cast is smaller than cylinder 12 bore and needs shotcups to make up the difference - but those shotcups were not designed for slugs. Have a great day, FC

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chuck Finley - If Lyman or Lee got together with Claybuster or DR, they could easily produce something...but they've had at least 40 years to do that with no traction in sight. Best to ya, FC

    • @chuckfinley3152
      @chuckfinley3152 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i found a link a couple of days ago where a guy 3d printed a wad specifically for the 525, cant remember if it had the shotcup or not, but it definitely had a truncated cone integrated to fit the base of the slug, of course i cant find it now....

    Morning , I was wondering if you have one on loading/shooting round ball in for your shotgun(s) with various wadding or patched? I've had good success with them even with BP and raw sheeps wool wadding in my H&R 20 ga smooth bore/ Mod choke. However, Patched does much better in the rifled slug barrel.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The OkWoodsman - Thanks for your good questions. Yes, the 12 gauge round ball is a formidable projectile. I do have videos up on loading and shooting them. The Lee .690 round ball loads readily and weighs in at 1 1/8 oz. Have a great day, FC

    • @DenverLoveless
      @DenverLoveless 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OK thanks, I find the 20 ga is just down right more handy than the 12 for tromping around in the woods. And the Lee .600 RB @ 324 gr isn't a lightweight either. Haha I'm gonna go watch 'em right now!

    Manufactures don't sell the good components, that keeps us buying the fully loaded ammo. That makes for profitable products. I know several people that want to buy Federal Flight Control Wads. I do not think they are available for purchase. It also took a while for Hordany to make LeverEvolution powder available. Its still not available for all calibers that factory ammo is produced in.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jake Outdoors - Thanks for the fine points you bring out. Lee could have easily designed special wads to fit their slugs, and then marketed same. There never was any secret on what the factories do. Would have been very Lee-like to have done that. But no. The best shotgun slug technology market is kept strictly to the factories. BPI is the only outfit that is close to giving us factory stuff, but the pricing is such that we might as well buy factory slugs (we can't resist giving them a try though). Our home made slugs are so economical at 12 cents a slug, we are happy with that even though our slugs don't perform as well as factory. If we get close, we're happy. Somebody spent $1 a shot for every one of those empty Federals that I picked up... Best Regards to ya, FC

      chevy6299 - It's been decades of opportunities for that entreprenuer to make those and no one has stepped into the breech yet... hopefully some time we'll see it... Best to ya, FC

    You would think they would sell them as components. It would add to their profits. FYI...I used a red dot. Eyes don’t do well with iron sights anymore. 2 inches at 100 with irons is pretty good.

    Hey FC, a different question , but related to reloading. I have the Lyman 49th edition reloading handbook, would you get the 50th edition or the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook as your next purchase ?

  • @elijahturrentine2767
    @elijahturrentine2767 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can you get custom molds to make these slugs. Thanks

    • @chuckfinley3152
      @chuckfinley3152 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elijah Turrentine i think factory slugs are swaged, i dont know but maybe the rifling would do some weird stuff when you try to open the mold because one end of the rifling would be in one mold block and the other in the other because of the spiral nature of rifling

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Elijah Turrentine - Chuck Finley makes a great point - no way do the factories cast those slugs - too little profit doing that. And those spiral flutes are not conducive to casting. Slugs are interesting animals...bearing surface is a very important issue - even though pressures are low, if they spike, the shotgun barrels are toast. So if you study the design of slugs, every consideration to keep bearing surface low while allowing barrel communication for accuracy is done. Perhaps our best bet is to have a sub caliber cast projectile and mated polymer sabots a la factory sabot slugs. Best to ya, FC

    Curious, can these be used in a regular long hunting barrel with a full choke? If not, are the other chokes OK?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      2fast2block - You will not find any responsible shooter or YT poster that will tell you anything other than "only pure lead be used for shotgun slugs". Also, "use cylinder bores only" That is the company line. (I have used IC, but that is not the official recommendation) FC Steve

      Thanks, as a follow-up my previous casting question, I did flux the "range scrap" alloy. Hand poured some .54 cal 300 gr R.E.A.L. bullets from my new Lee mold, and shot 2'' group at 50 yds (iron sights). Just may be my new bullet next fall.

    You are absolutely WRONG about the purpose of the rifling. It IS to impart spin on the slug. You have no idea what you are talking about.

  • @christophermercer2632
    @christophermercer2632 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The rifling is defenitley to stabilize and spin the slug😂
