    I don't even know if anyone will read this but if anyone does, specially that momma that is about to have her 1st born, hear me out. What Bridget is saying is so true. On March, 25th, 2021 I was having contractions with my 1st born baby. It was late at night and I was watching many of Bridget's videos about breathing, labor stages, and others. What I focused on the most from her videos was to breathe through my contractions. I did this. I didn't honestly count as she suggested, I didn't use that method, but I did breathe in deep and slow and out slowly, trying to relax, and guess what? My baby popped right out. yes! I am not kidding. I only pushed once and just breathed through my contractions through it all. Labor was intense, don't get me wrong, but focusing on my breath made it manageable.

      I don’t feel I’ll be able to handle the intensity of labor even with the slow breathing but will try. I’m scheduled for induction tomorrow morning.

    With my first baby, I refused to hear other womans stories, or as I would call them, horror stories. I refused to let them scare me about the labor pain. I said “once baby comes, my body will naturally know what to do.” And sure enough I did most my labor at home thinking it was only the beginning until I noticed my body was already wanting to push. That’s when I knew I had to go to the hospital. I pushed in the truck on my way to the hospital and broke my water in the truck as well. Once I got to the hospital I pushed maybe about 5 times and my son was born.

      Hello! So do you pretty much do the destresser breath from the moment contractions start til you give birth (minus talking to nurses etc and things like that!) I just have no idea when to do it!
      Before watching this video and reading the comments I genuinely thought I'd absolutely get an epidural but now I realise that might not be the case, just need a little extra knowledge. Thank you!!!

      Wish I could’ve done this but everyone I was surrounded by felt liberty and humor to disrespect my request to keep those stories silent and decided to keep telling me about theirs or about the horror stories. I was so angry with them.

    I did this instinctively with my last birth. After two horribly traumatic births, I refused to go to the hospital until I was in transition. I was relaxed at home and breathed through the contractions and worked with my body. I was amazed how fast my labor went and how easy it was compared to my other labors. 30 seconds after walking into the hospital i got the urge to push, I told the intake nurse this and she didn't believe me because I was so calm. I ended up walking about 10 ft to a gurney left in the hallway and giving birth on that. Took 2 pushes, no screaming, minimal pain (all things considered). I'm currently 33 weeks pregnant with my 4th and so excited to just go ahead and do a home birth. I am legitimately excited for birth.

      @Haley Lane I was searching comments for someone else that had a very traumatic previous birth. I’m looking towards having a 2nd now….with 6 years of not getting any answers for what happened with my sons birth, emergency C-section for FTP, etc. If you have any time to share with me, I really could use some wisdom. 🙏🏽♥️
      I’m also very very standoffish with hospitals and OB’s now. My previous midwife and doula did literally nothing to help me, or advise me, and just threw me to the wolves. I need to understand what happened and why, and get more education on what a 2nd birth might look like. How to do it, possibly completely on my own if everyone is useless again. Advise? TH-cam content? Or if you want to even talk with me? I would appreciate anything. ♥️

    Okay so, hear me out. My first birth was absolutely traumatic. Hospital birth, induction, epidural, and then I had a postpartum hemorrhage. So with my second baby I knew for a fact I wasn’t going to let that happen again so I opted to go as natural and intervention free as possible. I took Bridget’s birth class and watched these videos religiously AND LET ME TELL YOU. My birth was honestly better than I could’ve asked for and this video is GOLD. The ONLY way I was able to get through my birth without crying/yelling even one time was this breathing technique. I did it my entire labor, kept myself as relaxed as possible, and I was able to have a completely intervention free birth. I was never even touched by my midwife until after my baby’s head came out. Ugh. THANK YOU BRIDGET 🥺

      @@halloweellahere7602 I did the breathing once I started to feel a contraction coming to the moment it would stop.. if I happened to get a contraction as a nurse was talking to me then I would still do the breathing.... hope this helps!!!!!

      I don’t have a plan to have a baby yet but it’s always nice and very helpful to know things like this. I haven’t had a baby because I’m scared of labor to be honest.

    Okay, I have to come back here after I gave birth to tell you guys this is the best advice ever!!! My OBGYN told me that since it's my first pregnancy, labor is gonna be long and it's not gonna be easy. But guys, I only spent 2 hours in the labor room, that's 5cm to 10cm. What I did was I tried to take a nap (altho it was hard), I rested save up energy so I'll have all the energy I need when it's time to push, and this breathing exercises! It worked so perfectly! 💕💕 THANK YOU BRIDGET!
    I also want to thank you because through my entire pregnancy, your videos helped me alot. Delivered the baby easy and safely. ❤️

    I did the destresser breath without watching any videos or researching it 🤷🏼‍♀️ and all the nurses were so confused as to why I wasn't in any pain lol. I was on high doses of pitocin with little pain. 10/10 recommended 👍🏻

      @@halloweellahere7602 I just did it while I was having a painful contraction. I was induced on pitocin and for the first 12ish hours I didn't feel anything. After that once the contractions hurt enough that I couldn't talk through them (probably another 6-8 hours) I just relaxed my whole body and did the breathing. Obviously this could be different if you're not induced.
      Hope that makes sense, but feel free to ask more questions if you have any! 😊

    This really works! I just delivered my second baby and I honestly didn't register the contractions as 'pain' this time as a result of using this breathing technique throughout labour and listening to Bridget's birth affirmation meditation tracks which helped me stay calm and focused. I also recommend listening to Ina May's Guide to Childbirth which Bridget mentions in another video - it made me believe in the power and capability of women/our bodies to deliver babies naturally.
    For all the pregnant mama's reading this - you got this! Thank you Bridget for creating such wonderful content.

    I swear by this breathing method. I delivered an 8 pound baby boy today, no pain medicines. I had requested for an epidural but the breathing control and a bathtub helped me getting to full dilation without pain killers.

    I just gave birth this evening to my third son. I had excruciating back labor up until he turned at 10 cm, but I kid you not, focusing on my breath, and not rushing through the pushing stage saved me. He was almost 8 pounds, and I did not tear at all. I breathe him down and out, using the J breath, and staying on my hands and knees/side and I’m amazed at how recovery is going! I’m so happy to say this has been the best birth yet! Thank you Bridgett!

    I was in labour and did not know as I was practicing this breathing technique - once I reached the hospital for just a day assesment I was measuring at 6cm dilated - I promise you this technique works ! I was only pushing for half hour and was in labour for a total of 5-6 hours ! I also have a very low pain threshold but was told by the midwives I do have a high threshold and how I am made to deliver babies 😅😂
    I also followed Bridgets pregnancy ball excises too both combined together I was able able to experience a pleasant labour and delivery ☺️

    I had VBAC for my 2nd and got into hypnobirthing for my 2nd. I did focus on breathing (deep in and sigh out) during wave of surges. I focused on letting go of fear - which i had for my first. Had the surges at home and in the car (2 hrs ish) got to the hospital and midwife said she could see the hair, and it was about time to push. Baby was born in 10-15 min i was in that precheck room. My 1st son and husband were not even sent home. ❤❤❤❤ Im 30 weeks with my 3rd and current goal is both easy natural birth+ no tearing 😊😊😊.

    I used this breathwork when I was sadly having a miscarriage. I had intense labor pains (I know since I already have a son and experienced birth trauma with him). I was so calm that I fell into a trance and fell asleep without pain medication. Now I’m pregnant with my rainbow and feel more confident in my body’s ability to give birth and actually looking forward to the day when I do. Thank you for this video. I wished I had this knowledge with my first son.

    I just wanted to say thank you so much! I found your video this morning without having contractions, after a couple of hours I started to have contractions really painful and this breathing was a life saver for me during all stages of labor. My baby boy was born a couple of hours ago. Completely free of meds.

    Seriously these videos of your and also Sarah Lavone literally prepared me it was my third pregnancy I just had first time doing it completely natural unmedicated and without preparing myself by watching these videos I don’t think I would have been able to do it from the start I did the j breathing and that helped with the pain tremendously also everytime a contraction was coming on I kept telling myself pressure not pain PROGRESS not pain and one contraction closer to it being over and seeing my baby then I got to transition where most women get to the point where it’s to painful and they can’t do it anymore in my mind I’m like oh my gosh I can’t do this and then your words popped in my head saying how normally when they say that the end is near and I actually got excited where I’m like yes! The end is near literally 3 more contractions and boom my water broke he flew out I seriously think the j breathing triggered the fetal eject reflex because I didn’t even push at all he was just flying out

      @@halloweellahere7602 yeah definitely have to be in that mindset for me I was literally two weeks overdue and I was like I don’t care I need him out lol but I just did them during a contraction, also trying not to tense up helps get through it faster, and just distracting your brain it’s not pain it’s progress kinda thing!     Literally watched this video on the morning I was laboring at home, and it was a LIFE SAVER! In the end I progressed so fast once I got to the hospital that I wasn't able to get an epidural and ended up with a natural birth. Scary, but I was able to breathe through it using this technique!

      Can you tell me more about your experience? My second baby is due soon and my worst fear is that I'll get to the hospital too late for an epidural (first baby took a week of labor due to extreme dehydration, but only 9 minutes of delivery; she started face down and spun around to face up but it only took 4 pushes).

    Just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos - I watched a lot of them in the days before I gave birth to my second child, and I'm so glad I did. I ended up having a really positive, magical birth - in the end the midwives only just arrived in time, because I was so convinced I wasn't yet in established labour and we didn't need them yet... Our bodies are incredible and your videos really helped me to get in the most helpful state of mind to have my baby. Thank you Bridget, and to any pregnant women wondering whether to watch these videos, it really will be time well spent!!

    It’s so interesting because I had my first son 4 years ago and I was 19. I didn’t do any hypno birthing, Lamaze or read about breathing. But I did know being out of control would make things worse. So I give the advise to all of my friends that the best tip about labor is controlling your breathing. The contractions will happen whether you want them to or not, it would just hurt enough all I could do was breathe through it and keep myself calm and allow myself to rest in between contractions. It’s great advice and I can attest to it personally

    I am due with my third child in just a few weeks and I have also been following your videos. My first baby was a water birth, no pain relief - and I always felt my mind never quite caught up to what my body was doing, it was just powering through. My second birth was more intense, stressful, dramatic, everything happened so fast - also no pain relief as things were happening so quickly. But - right when I really thought I couldn't do it anymore, there was a moment of thinking " right, do your breathing" and I started doing it and I grew calmer. My son arrived a few minutes later. I'm hoping the third labour will be more like my first - but regardless of how it goes, I will be doing the breathing! Thank you for all your videos!

    Thank you for your helpful videos ❤️ I just gave birth to my second child last week. My first labor and delivery experience was very long, painful and medicated, which resulted in episiotomy and pretty traumatic postpartum recovery. Not much from our hospital birth classes really helped me.
    So I was getting increasingly anxious this time when my due date was approaching. I read a little about natural birth without epidural but seriously doubted I would ever have the courage to even consider it. I’m so glad I came across your videos a few days before birth. I found the affirmation meditation and breathing techniques very helpful to stay calm. I trusted my body. Although I kept a very open mind about any birth options to ensure safety, I was confident that I would be able to start labor spontaneously and go as far as I could without pain medication. I was very committed to labor as long as I could at home before heading to the hospital. I didn’t ask for epidural and declined the option of pitocin to augment labor ( I was already 8cm dilated, why?!). Because I had so much faith in my body. My husband was amazing and supported me with lots of gentle massage. When it came time to push, I could feel every sensation and my baby and body just directed me to do the natural thing. I pushed for about one hour and a healthy 9lb 4oz baby was born. It was of course painful and hard but it was also beautiful and empowering. I felt very connected to my body throughout the process.

      @@halloweellahere7602 Yes, I started to practice the breathing technique couple days before birth and when contractions started, I felt more prepared. I think breathing really helped. Also like I said in my comment, just building up the confidence using her affirmation talk internally was super empowering. But I also went in with an open mind - ready for epidural, c-section or any intervention that would be necessary for the baby and my safety. Best wishes, mommy! You can do it :) wish you a safe and rewarding experience!

    I got my 4 doses of oral induction today. There are mild contractions right now and I’m trying to be as comfortable as possible. I have been watching a lot of your videos during these 40 weeks and they’ve helped a lot! ❤️

    I just wanted to come back and say thank you for these tips on breathing.
    I just had my 3rd baby/3rd natural birth and breathing through contractions is what helped me through it.
    My doula said mine was the calmest birth she ever supported.
    Although I didn't count as I breathed, I did the deep breath in through my nose until I couldn't breathe in anymore and then breathed out through my mouth as recommended.
    The only truly rough parts were transition after my water broke (my water broke toward the end after I was in active labor) and pushing.
    I was praying to push the baby out fast and I only ended up pushing for 9 mins (although it felt like an eternity at the time lol).
    But focusing on breathing made this labor as a whole more calm and productive and allowed me to relax through the pain much better.
    I only tore a little and besides the few stitches everything else was natural and smooth.
    So thank you!!!

    This is so true! I had little expectation of being able to deliver my firstborn without the help of medicine, and primarily because of this belief, I ended up having an epidural. It just kept running through my head, “I can’t do this.” But with my second baby, I am SO grateful I listened to you and a few other TH-camrs, particularly about breathing. It was the most positive natural birth experience that I could have hoped for. And a good thing that I had planned to deliver naturally because labor was fast and furious, under 3 hours. We barely made it to the birth center in time for the midwife to catch her! If it weren’t for utilizing my breath and rhythm, like when I would pace and syncopate my breath when running, I might have gone out of my head with how quickly and intensely things were happening. Breath helps immensely with precipitous labor.

    You are my absolute favorite TH-cam doula! You are so beautiful and I love the way you talk with your hands😊 I've never felt more fear than I felt when I first saw my positive pregnancy test, even though I had told the universe a few months prior that I was finally fully ready, at 38 years old for motherhood, and to bring it on! That initial fear really surprised me but dissipated slowly after about a week as I came to terms with the fact that this was going to happen and fear of the birth would only make it more difficult. I became determined to learn as much as I could about pregnancy, birth and infant care as I could before my baby comes. I never knew how much there was to learn about this natural process. Your videos are the best I've found so far and are giving me the exact mental tools I need to go through with my original desire to have an unmedicated natural birth. I fully believe in the power of mind over matter. And your encouraging lessons are giving me so much more confidence to go into my own birth experience feeling fearless and powerful. Almost 19 weeks now and looking forward to proving to myself just how much power I have to bring this baby into the world in the healthiest way possible.     I have to thank you sooo much, I watched you weeks and weeks before my due date and all the information you have shared specifically the breathing and believing you when you say our bodies are built to birth was the only thing that got me through the painful contractions. I surprised myself with a natural/no pain relief birth just being so focused on the breathing. I know it would have been very different if I didn’t watch your videos and I am almost certain I would have opted in for an epidural. Xxx

    I labored for 12 hours, felt like I had maybe had 5 contractions because I was so zoned out and just breathing, my husband said I was in a trance. I think I learned it while getting tattoos... Just a meditation, helps so much. It's like anything, stay calm, it goes much easier.

      😂 I'm so glad you said this. I have a lot of tattoos. 5-8 hour tattoos, face, neck, etc. I was thinking, "I use these breathing techniques while getting tattooed for a long time or in a sensitive spot." Im glad someone else confirmed because I'm having my first baby.

    18.07 went into the labour, thanks to yours breathing videos everything went fast and helped me a lot with the pain. Midwife's were amazed, I didn't even screamed.

      @@halloweellahere7602 Hi, I started to do breathing as soon as contraction started. It really helped with pain. I did get epidural, so I could get some rest and sleep. But from epidural I didn't have feeling that I'm pushing my baby out so midwife pressed with the elbow my belly. She did this like 3 times and bum, baby was out.
      It was my first baby, I didn't scream and I didn't felt any pain. I recovered really fast. I was begin them to do c section but they said no need for that, now I'm glad they didn't.
      Girl was in the room with me and it was just painful to watch her. She couldn't hold her baby, couldn't get up, nothing.
      Just be relaxed as much as you can, listen to midwife's. When you get to hold your baby for the first time you will forget about all the pain.

    With my first son I was able to have a natural labor even with pitocin because of my breathing! Now almost 6 years later we are having baby boy #2 very soon (currently 36 weeks) I have been really nervous about the whole thing but have been watching your videos and updating the education I already have, feeling better and more prepared for this baby. Telling myself I can do this, I did it the first time I can do it again even stronger!

    I'm 38 wks into my second pregnancy and I just want to say thank you so much for the content you are sharing! Despite all the books that I read during my 1st pregnancy, I was still so fearful and felt so unprepared before and after baby. This time around I am experiencing more discomfort in babies movements and have been going through prodromal labor symptoms for a little over a month now. Your calming voice and tips have really helped me get through some rough nights and despite the discomfort, I feel so much more prepared and calm this time around. Anytime I feel discomfort, I remember your breathing techniques and affirmations and it helps tremendously!

    Thank you Bridget for all the information you give on your channel. I birthed my second child recently and was surprised by how much a difference the breathing technique made. I was so calm (even happy) throughout the labor that I wasn't sure whether it was time to go to the hospital despite how close the contractions were. When I reached the hospital, it turned out that I was already at 8cm and baby came very soon after. This was very different from my first birth where I struggled with the sensations even way before transition. To other mums out there, i personally recommend practising the breathing with guided meditation throughout the third trimester. You can do it! :)

    I had a woman roll her eyes at me when I stated I was doing a home birth. She said she had a C-section for both of hers. I'm understanding but I really don't ever ask for stories because It seems most say something negative and i just don't need that negativity. My mother had hospital births but said she had good labors and deliveries. She also did not need medication for her births. Her positive Experience is what I keep in mind!

      I was due last Thursday & had my daughter on her actual due date! I can say whole heartedly I wish I knew everything I know now with my first labor! Listening to her techniques gave me the best possible birthing experience! Even the doctors were impressed with the breathing and how smoothly everything went! I went with her positions on pushing and didn’t need a single stitch this time! No tears! I asked to keep her on the cord a couple extra minutes for it to turn and all in all I would take her advice because she actually knows what she’s talking about. Such a beautiful experience and so thankful she’s here on TH-cam for the world to listen to! Best experience giving birth to Grace ❤️

    Since finding your video I have been practicing your destressor breathing technique. When I started doing it I could barely do 4 seconds in and now I am able to do the full 6 seconds in and almost 6 seconds out especially more consecutively. I know it doesn't seem like a huge improvement but i can tell my lungs are fully expanding better and baby girl always moves more when I do them. One more month to go roughly for my second baby and getting more excited with the tools and knowledge I have gained from you. Winging it is not the smartest thing you can do and I regret doing that with my first born

    Cool! I heard of one birth story... my Mom's. Hers was incredibly traumatic and horrible and I have felt really bad for her ever since she told me. Knowing her story made me want to educate myself as BEST I could to make sure I can have a safe natural birth, unlike my poor Mommy did. I've taken the full course of classes with my hospital and have a natural birth plan ready to go! I'm 30 weeks pregnant and have come from being SCARED AS SHIT to TOTALLY ZEN about having my first baby. I have a lot of confidence and I'm ready to breath and relax with my partner there to support me. Fingers crossed that everything will go well! I'm really excited to see my little Violet!!     Hi Bridget, I delivered today. The breathing helped me a lot although I still had to have two epidurals. It still worked and my confidence was up. I was able to do something facing the worst pain I have ever gone through. Have a healthy baby girl now and I am a momma of two.

    Thank you so much. This breathing technique alone was a game-changer for me from my previous unmedicated birth.     Labored about 9 hours at home with my first before having the urge to push. Doula and midwife didn't think I was close because I wasn't making noise or struggling. I was breathing!!

    I had morphine and gas for pain management and after those did not feel pain at all, just pressure like wanting to do a massive poo. Throughout the labour even before the drugs I was just swaying and breathing rhythmically on my gym ball and hours just rolled by so quickly. I did not speak a word and banished my hubby to the corner of the room. Midwife was bored stiff too - I was handling it so well by myself. Breathing together with mental imagery helped so much.

    This is such a good breathing method! I will definitely use it during labor.
    This is a little nitpicky, but I think it’s worth clarifying for the sake of anatomical accuracy. You can’t actually fill your diaphragm with air! It’s a dome-shaped muscle that sits under your lungs. When that muscle contacts, it flattens out, pulling the base of the lungs downward as it flattens. This forces the lungs to expand, which really maximizes the volume of air taken into the lungs. Diaphragm breathing is much better than intercostal-only or “shoulder” breathing for getting more air into your system, but it does not actually involve filling your diaphragm with air!
    Other than that, the tips she gave for practicing diaphragm breathing were excellent 😄

    I love ur vidoes, txx for all these info, currently 32 weeks preg. Definitly hoping for a natural birth and i will try this, little scared ;( and ur right tv and lots social media influencers just try to push mamas towards anything but a natural birth and its soo wrong and sad ;( there more mamas and babie deaths after 1990 , and this happens with all these medical improvements, unbelievable !

    I will come back after I have my second LO in a month to verify if this worked for me. I did NOT breathe properly with my first; I tensed up, held my breath, tried to fight it and ended up stalling at 6cm for HOURS. I’m much more educated this time around and I’m hoping for an easier birth.

Your advice and knowledge made my labour much more comfortable and peaceful. Thank you so much for what you're doing, never stop as you're changing a dreaded experience (especially for women like me, traumatized after my first childbirth) into something beautiful :)

      @Agnieszka Pietroczuk My first labor and birth and postpartum was the most tramatic experience of my lifetime. I’m now wanting to look towards baby number 2, but trying to find mental healing from the first, which was 6 years ago. Do you have any advice, or can you direct me towards any content you found helpful? I don’t even know where to turn. I had planned a home natural birth, but my midwife and doula basically did nothing, then stressed me way out with looming a 24 hour countdown over my head, then forcing me to the hospital at that time marker, then throwing me to the hospital wolves with max pitocin and looming a C-section over my head, then forced “emergency C-section” for FTP. All while I had achieved 7 cm at home before they began the whole charade. And then I had tons of postpartum complications from the drugs, and severe ppd for over 2 more years, and none of them would help me postpartum either. I just need direction to help myself, and educate myself. Any advice mama? ♥️🙏🏽♥️

    I'm on my 28 weeks for my 2nd baby, aiming for VBAC.. I didn't experience labor on my 1st child coz he's breech and my CS was scheduled. I'll practice this breathing technique every day. Hope I'll be able to vlog my labor so I can prove that this helps :) thank you so much!

      Foxy Amaterasu It went well! I actually went into labor that night and was able to stay calm and confident through the full experience, even when baby’s heart rate dipped, and they were preparing me for a possible emergency c-section. They were able to correct it, and it was a long labor 17.5 hours total, with 11 in the hospital (epidural seemed to stall me out), but I have no regrets about any of it. I delivered vaginally with a 1st degree tear and got a beautiful baby boy. 😊

    All my knowledge and skills went out the window when I was in prodromal back labour with my first and was so over tired and exhausted from not progressing. I felt totally out of control, tense and disheartened even though I did SO much prep work with hypnobirthing and doing spinning babies and the miles circuit. I felt like a failure after all the information I took in but still had a really positive birth experience even though it wasn’t what I expected it to be. I thought I was going to handle it a lot better haha but I do think hypnobirthing gave me a really positive outlook with birth and I wasn’t afraid mostly just exhausted beyond belief. Now I am 36 weeks with my second and really REALLY want to stay focused on my breathing and not lose control. I love your mantra of “Trust. Relax. Let Go.” I’m going to post this everywhere in my home this time around and get my husband to recite it back to me haha and start doing the inversion and leaning forward to make sure I have more tummy labour this time around. Thanks for sharing your content and for being so encouraging!

    I definitely agree!! Even now when I have a little pelvic pain because of walking a lot or during the exercise, or just because I'm tired, I start breathing deeply and slowly in and out and the pain goes away right away. It's unbelievable. That's why I keep doing it. That also relaxes and calms me.     It's so important to hear this because i have been there ,i didn't trust my body i was afraid i couldn't do it naturally and had to go through a c-section . If i had listened to this prior my birth ,i would have probably gone natural . But however i am so thankful to God that my baby and i are safe 😍
    You have inspired me to look up for a VBAC so hopefully the next one will be through that😊😘

      Hello!
      So do you pretty much do the destresser breath from the moment contractions start til you give birth (minus talking to nurses etc and things like that!) I just have no idea when to do it!
      Before watching this video and reading the comments I genuinely thought I'd absolutely get an epidural but now I realise that might not be the case, just need a little extra knowledge. Thank you!!! Also apart from the breathing is there anything else I can do? Thank you!
