  • This video discusses the pros and cons of using the DJI O3 Air Unit or the GoPro (specifically GoPro Hero 11 Mini) for cinematic FPV shots. The DJI O3 Air Unit provides on-board 4k 60FPS DVR that is more than adequate for most FPV pilots, but it is not without its disadvantages:
    Pros of using DJI O3 Air Unit vs. GoPro
    - No need for external cam = less cost, less weight, less hassle
    - convenient to check exposure and setup cam right in goggles (no need for phone/app)
    - All-in-one system means real-time monitoring of exposure
    - Record on takeoff setting means to forgetting to hit record
    Cons of DJI O3 Air Unit vs GoPro
    - Sometimes you want different settings for FPV feed vs. HD recording
    - O3 system is prone to vibrations
    - O3 suffers with low light; dynamic range
    - GoPro "Pro" features [GoPro Labs, higher bitrates, etc]
    The footage from this video was taken from several flights with GEPRC MK5D running DJI O3 and a GOPro Hero 11 Mini. There are no cuts or edits other than a simple color grade and overlaying one video on top of the other for comparison.

      Even if the image quality isn't quite as good as the GoPro, the O3 is super convenient now that I have gotten used to the menu inside the Integra goggles. It's pretty nice to be able to set all my camera settings and check exposure without having to use the phone. My dog always tries to attack the drones as they take off, drones are unnatural and evil according to a dog's perspective LOL. Thanks a lot for watching Matty!

    I know people crucified the original dji fpv for its image quality, I actually think it’s step up over the 03/avata, except it has no gyro data and I wish it was a touch wider, but for a start it can do 4k 4:3, and it seems to grade better than o3, it feels as gradable as say the mini 3 pro in terms of dynamic range and colour- the more I’ve shot with o3 the more I think it lacks colour information that can’t be corrected with boosting saturation in post, it has a green colour caste, the bit rate seems low and the dynamic range is limited. It sucks because you’re 100% right now great it is to be able to see your image in real time, (except that also it’s nice to fly with different settings than you would record), but the limited dynamic range means you have to choose between clipping the sky in the recording or being able to see detail in the trees for general flying. After switching most of my quads over to o3 I’m actually thinking of going back to the nebula pro, but I can never give up the better range and penetration of o3, but the camera is worse for actual flying, and it’s worse than go pro for recording, my absolute dream would either be an o4 air unit that fixes these problems, or a split air unit, where there’s 2 camera modules for flying and recording but you can switch from viewing one to the other with a button, that way you could have a great set up for flying with auto exposure and boosted shadows, at 100fps for best latency, but your recording camera will be set to avoid highlight clipping and shoot a more cinematic frame rate, even just going from 50 to 30 you get a better image (especially in low light) but 30 is just unflyable. Also the exposure algorithm is just plain worse than the go pro, go pro will always seem to protect the sky from blowing out yet o3 will happily let it be obliterated, and also the o3’s auto exposure is too erratic, doing say a power loop it’s likely the footage will brighten up when you look at the floor where as the go pro seems to react slower to changes in light so it never really ruins the footage by wildly changing the exposure mid shot. Also while I’m ranting, why the hell can’t you change exposure settings while recording, I think you should be able to shoot in manual or auto and easily adjust exposure comp or change iso with physical buttons, without having to go into the menu, stop the recording, change the settings, and then start recording again, while trying to also pilot the craft, it’s madness the amount of times the auto exposure has messed me up and I genuinely can’t see the tree gap until I adjust the exposure settings

      You are really right about that the O3 has pretty bad dynamic range, to the point that it is unusable for pro-level image unless lighting conditions are perfect, yet that FPV feed is fantastic, hands down the best on the market now, so I find myself buying more O3's because the extra $$ is worth it for an expensive quad that is going to carry an expensive camera. I'm spoiled by the O3 range/penetration to the point that it's hard to go back. For pro work, just have to carry an external camera!

      I agree that there is still a place for flying with a GoPro, the image quality IS definitely a bit better and it's nice to have those options that you mentioned, but for normal use, filming with the O3 just saves a lot of cost, weight, and hassle...

    really appreciate the info you shared through this video. I’m thinking getting the mk5D quad. You mentioned the o3 system is exceptionally prone to vibrations and produce shaky videos. Is that the case with the mk5D? Or the design eliminate the issue?

      @colibrifpv  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks a lot for your feedback, really glad you liked it! The MK5D is designed very well, the tpu inserts for the camera do eliminate a lot of the vibrations. I would say if you buy the BNF from GepRC you won't have any problems because they tune their quads very well and it will fly perfectly out of the box. If you buy the frame and build yourself, you will have to tune a little bit to get rid of some vibrations. If you end up ordering from GEPRC, you can use coupon "fpv5" for 5% off...

      I use the record on takeoff setting. Go to camera settings, advanced I think. I do think there needs to be a shortcut or dedicated button, because I don't need to record EVERY flight and it's a bother to dive deep into settings...

    Nice video. Do you have any experience with losing the video from your DJI O3 at long range? An advantage of analog goggle video is that it doesn’t suddenly give a a black screen in the goggles when the signal starts fading.

    • @colibrifpv
      @colibrifpv  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I have lost the video feed momentarily, but just for a second or two. Whenever I fly long range I have GPS rescue, and if I lose video signal I will activate it, the quad will fly up (the way I have it setup) and that is enough to restore video feed. You are right about that being an advantage of analog, but the new gen DJI goggles adds a visual indicator when you are in danger of losing signal, a yellow bar then a red bar at the bottom of the screen. Digital is awesome but there is still a place for analog!

      @@ehsankeshtgar6734 No, I don't think you could do this, or want to even if possible. The O3 has just miliseconds of latency, which is what makes it such a great FPV system, and the solution you are describing via HDMI output would have so much latency it would be unusable. For example, first your drone crashes into a tree, then a few seconds later you see the tree you've already crashed into...
