    WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS???.........This is the 2nd video where I keep seeing the DJI Action 4 have completely smudged areas where the GoPro has details. For example. Pause the video at 3:10 and look at the ground especially as it gets further and further away. The Action 4 is almost just a solid grey smudge while the ground is clearly not just a solid grey smudge as the GoPro proves. The other video I saw of the same thing was the Action 4 being compared to "only" a Hero 9 and the same thing happened; with the DJI Action 4 a portion of the side of a man's face was almost just a solid skin-coloured smudge while the GoPro Hero 9 looked "normal" and captured the details properly. It's not a case of digital (ie. post-process) sharpening, the details are simply not being captured by the Action 4 AT ALL (also, the DJI was set to the sharpest mode just to be sure). It's like the Action 4 is in some insanely low bitrate mode or something - I don't know how else to explain it.

    • @theamateurguitarist6187
      @theamateurguitarist6187 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      That could be shutter speed and motion blur. If the GoPro has to run with a higher shutter speed it will have more detail in movement, but this is not pleasing to the eye or cinematic. You could get that level of detail by turning up the shutter speed on the Action4, but more natural motion blur would be the goal.

    • @seba7422
      @seba7422 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@theamateurguitarist6187 no, it is not the shutter speed, its software compression to fit 4k within camera's max bit rate. DJI chooses low contrast areas and removes details. Particularly noticeable on sequences with fast moving background. No matter the shutter speed low contrast objects closer to camera have some detail, but anything further away changes into mushy patches.

    Im a kiteboarder and mostly using action cameras for shooting my kiting videos. Most important feature for me is horizon lock. Somehow DJI cameras resolution is very low in this mode (2.7K only) compare to 4K for Gopro. Very strange than none of the reviews mention it. I recently switched from a Hero 7 to an Action 4, and two things really stand out to me on the Action 4: The quick record button is way faster and works every single time (My Hero 7's sometimes would do nothing and require a reboot - missed many shots because of this) and the magnetic mounting system is FAR superior. I actually had two Hero 7's so I didn't have to switch mounts often because it took forever and was just simply inconvenient. Having both, I find each of them to excel in different situations. I think the GoPro does a much better job handling skin tones and creating an overall more cinematic image. The resolution is also helpful. In regard to the DJI, it's good, but the ecosystem isn't as diverse or wide as GoPro's current eco system. The addition of LOG profile, the ability to view on the app while recording, and the built in 1/4 on the bottom of the GoPro might not be the jump people wanted, but I do use every one of these features every single time I use my GP12. If you are already in the GP ecosystem, it's an easy upgrade, if you are new, DJI might be the better choice.

    Great comparison... one important note. Action 4 DOES NOT have GPS either. What Action 4 has is the ability to connect to a remote control with GPS sold separately that allows Action 4 to record the GPS data from the remote (not the camera, the remote... so it won't help if trying to record the speed of a drone etc.). There is no internal GPS in either the GoPro Hero 12 or Action 4.

    I recently got the OA4, after my old GoPRo7 died on an epic waterslide. Thanks for the analysis - I think you hit the use case scenario well. Like anything, it's how you use it. For me that means helmet mounts on motorbikes, cycles, snowboards, family outings. In these scenarios, the magnetic mount and front face touch screen I thought would be a big help - and yes, it's been great, also being a little smaller is good, and that low light sensor ability is great at dawn and dusk, so for me, the OA4 has been the right purchase so far. Not really any disrespect to the GP12 - still a good camera, and if you swap orientation of footage a lot, especially in post, that might well be enough to justify that camera choice.
    Sad to see the GPS go on the GP12 - I never did the overlays but it was nice to know where the picture or video was taken.

      EXACTLY. No one is talking about this. It's like the DJI Action 4 is in some insanely low bitrate mode or something. At 3:10, the ground with the Action 4 is just a huge, solid grey smudge blob while the GoPro shows the ground much better. I saw another video of a guy comparing the DJI Action 4 to "just" a GP hero 9 and it was the same thing. There were parts of the side of a man's face that were just a solid skin-coloured smudge with the Action 4 yet, with "just" a Hero 9, the "information" on the side of the man's face was actually captured properly (ie. showing all the details). Thanks for the great review. It's strange-every comparison I've watched prefers the Action 4, but despite the usability difference (HUGE, I know), the GoPro visually has better dynamic range. Not crushing blacks, you can see into the shadows, minimal over-exposure. Color science seems to be more appealing (even if the LOG isn't as flat). I don't think low-light performance should be a deciding point for an action camera... I really like the Action 4, but I went ahead and ordered the GoPro 12 because the output is what matters to me most. Thanks for another great video, Jason!

      The GP takes the edge on specific dynamic range scenarios, not all. The output doesn’t not matter the most if you are fumbling/fiddling to get the shot.

Once I have my presets I dont have to alter anything on the back screen if my gopro is mounted and the inclusion of the quarter inch thread means it now attachs to all my camera kit. I think the gopro looks sharper and the slow mo has always beat Dji (and yet ive owned both). Also the Gopro is cheaper and with my max lens mod 2 it is soooo useful. Hello Jason. Thus far, every one I have spoken to who have gone from GO PRO to the DJI ACTION 4, has spoken volumes about how good the Action 4 is. Several others I have spoken to have been ultra critical of the GO PRO 12 which three GO PRO users have criticised GO PRO 12 for leaking on dives, and have also claimed that GO PRO have ignored their claims. I have been researching the GO PRO and ACTION 4 as I am in the market for a small camera, and thus far, the DJI Action 4 is ahead on tests, quality and price. Thanks for an excellent review.

    I live in New Zealand and own the GoPro 12. Extremely happy with it till I went for a trip to Fiji with it at the peak of summer. Alas it overheated multiple times in the Fiji heat (around 32 Deg C - could have been higher or even slightly lower). I was extremely upset with missed opportunities to capture really precious occasions where family & friends met up after many years. Extremely lucky I had the Lumix G9, granted not an action camera didn't miss a beat recording 4K for extended periods and in even hotter conditions. But of course the G9 is obviously quite bulky in comparison. Back in Auckland NZ the Gopro is mostly working fine but it did overheat in Rotorua whilst shooting 4K (once again in fairly warm ambient temperatures. I still like the convenience it offers in terms of physical size and portability. Would have been nice if the battery life was slightly longer but not a deal breaker. I'm not upgrading to anything else until i either sell off the Gopro 12 or it fails completely. If and when that happens I might give the Dji a go. Thanks for the comparison.

    You mentioned the Action has GPS but I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Not my one anyway! They sell a separate GPS Bluetooth remote if you want GPS. I also think your GoPro is faulty because even my Hero 11 (with GPS) seems to outlast the battery and over heating on my Osmo Acrion 4.
    What nobody is talking about is data rates. My Hero 11 (basically same as Hero 12) gives me about 150mbps over about 90mbps on the DJI. I find that colours crush much easier on my DJI and attribute it to the data rates but maybe that's just me. I do prefer to user interface and frame rate options on the DJI though. It's both more simple and gives more shooting options at the same time

    Honestly, I have to go DJI just because of how much more pronounced the fisheye effect is on the GoPro. In the side-by-side walking through the house, walls and doorways are bowed and weird on the GoPro, while the DJI has relatively straight lines. It makes the scene feel more realistic and the movement is less dizzying.

    Have the hero 11 and got an action 4. Both are good but the action 4 audio is way better however I think GoPros menu is more clear and more information. For example I get conflicting information on action 4 are both color options 10bit or only d log? The way the menu has it I would assume only the d log which would then be a win for GoPro since you can have 10 bit in all color modes but then I hear others say both dji are 10 bit and even hear dji has hdr on all the time but then other say no only the 3 has hdr. Dji specs are not the clearest in terms of what are the actual settings. Functionally the camera is great and I’m liking it however the record button is much harder to press especially with any kind of glove on (we’ll see how it goes with a snow glove). I think go pro wins on better textile feel of buttons (something I’ve heard others complain on the action 3 and didn’t get fixed in the 4), GoPro wins on a more clear settings menu, GoPro wins stabilization having an auto boost feature. Dji wins on boot up and responsiveness, FOV, Audio, white balance and low light. On the FPS menu I kind of think it makes more sense to split them by region otherwise you may find yourself with an odd outcome if you don’t know the regions use, not everyone understands😊 what or why to use what FPS. I know I don’t so having it broken down as 30/60/120 eliminates me from messing up accidentally. Both great cameras but the low light in the woods, better FOV and better audio has me using the dji more.

      How is the DJI better when it completely doesn't even capture what it's filming and instead just makes things look like a solid coloured blob? Look at the ground at 3:10 for example. It's just a grey solid smudge with the DJI. I saw another video of the Action 4 being compared to "just" a GoPro Hero 9 and the same thing was happening to a portion of the side of a man's face. It was just a flat, solid, skin-coloured smudge on the DJI Action 4 while the Hero 9 actually captured the face normally. It's got nothing to do with sharpness settings, the DJI is simply not capturing the details at all. It's like the DJI is set to some insanely low bitrate or something. I have no idea what's going on but NO ONE is talking about it.

    I went for the SJ11. Better sound than the SJ10Pro and much better price. But a bit worse image quality.
    Also looked at the Akaso Brave 8. That was good but didn't have the screw hole on the bottom to fix it to my bike.
    I've got the SJ8Pro and been happy of it. But my rear display is destroyed and touch ain't working. Got a spare display, but way too hard to disassemble with my bad eyes and clumsy fingers.
    If I'm not happy with the SJ11 I'll send it back and buy the DJI Action4. It costs more but would make my video's look and sound a lot better. Thank you for the video. Greetings, NicoD.

    You can get a dome port for the DJI, but no underwater macro lens.

    I find the underwater looks better on the Gopro from your video

    The DJI seems to have a better neutral to color ratio than the Gopro. It's subtle, but visible if you get close up.

    What about using the cellphone with the Bluetooth to change the settings on the GoPro? It’s a thing and comes easy when using it for MotoVlog. What do you think?

    thinking of finally switching - I use DJI drones and the Osmo Pocket 3 - I hope I can use a lot of my existing GoPro accessories - the rest I will sell with GoPro 10 - definitely waiting until Aug 2024, to get the Action 5

    I wonder, who GoPro surveyed, when they say, nobody is using the GPS. Because people do use it, when you want to use it as telemetry in video. Like on the race track, on a bike track, running cross country, etc.
