And again one of the most reality related videos in FPV. Thank you so much, your content is one of the most useful of all the channels out there! Looking forward to some antenna tests with the O3 🙂
Still running your custom antenna on my V1 goggles haha. Nice to see you still making videos. I'm still waiting on my Goggles 2 and new unit to ship. Won't be here til end of January.
The O3 footage in some parts I thought was in black and white setting to start with. The color looks terrible while the vista looks great. I would hope this can be corrected. The camera cables are not the same on the O3 side I don't believe they are interchangeable. I think they could have a different amount of pins.
yep, that's the way it looks here in winter. almost bw ;) I've turned up white balance on vista quite a lot, looks nicer that way. didnt do this on the O3. O3 can for sure be tweaked more. hopefully also in the dark areas... I have to doublecheck - but I fear you are right, the MIPI cable might be different. short cable is the reason why I cannot install the O3 everywhere I want... (chimera7?)
@@Rcschim There is already replacement cables available from runcam, ali express and I think someone said even caddx but not confirmed. Ive already ordered a couple of 15cm ones. 20cm is also available. I'm sure DJI made the standard airunits 10cm so half of us will have to pay dearly just for a few extra cm to fit our long 5" frames, just like I had to do with all my vistas even tho they were 12cm.
I've been impressed with the O3 at full power and stock antennas. I use it on the ground and so far it consistently penetrates about 350ft worth of office building before losing too much signal. That's while just sitting in my car. I could actually, at the end of that ~350ft while parked on the other side of the building at the furthest end, bring the Mbps down to like 1.5 or so while maintaining around 100ms latency and keep driving around. It's when it drops just a hair below that things get real bad. The exposure has been my main issue now where I'd really like to drive around at night. I'm used to analog cameras being able to see everything in the lowest lighting. I could set my ISO high but I couldn't figure how to have this set a high EV yet also leave it on auto. Otherwise the on board camera is really good. The RockSteady EIS seems to be able to smooth out the harshest bumps and vibrations, at least on the ground.
Überhaupt wenns was Neues zu entdecken / testen gibt.
I dont' like how much darker the o3 is. Maybe there are settings for the camera that can change that. I just bound an o3 to my V2 goggles in my house and the picture was grainy because it's so dark in my house, but then I rebound my Vista to my goggles and it wasn't nearly as grainy.
@@LovesM855A1that wouldnt matter for light. Interesting that it is like this. Usually the higher the frame rate the darker the photo due to the shutter speed having to be quicker which lets less light through. I heard the o3 lowlight performance is very poor though. Maybe its just the sensor
Prerequisites / Firmware upgrade journey: - DJI Goggles V2 need to be on a new firmware! 01.04.0000! - DJI O3 Airunit needs to be activated and on the latest firmware! - first update your DJI Assistant(s) 2 (just to be sure) (note that you need both, the "DJI FPV" and the "consumer drones" version of the DJI Assistant 2! Make sure to INSTALL DJI Assistant 2 with Admin rights, else you might get stuck at the black DOS window (where it's installing drivers) - apply the ROOT Hack (WTF.OSD) before the Goggles FW upgrade! With the new firmware you will not be able to go back and root your goggles anymore to use the WTF OSD tools, so you have one option less in the future! My V2s needed a downgrad to FW 01.00.0606 so the WTF hack could be applied. - switch the Goggles to DJI FPV mode (or Avata mode) - use DJI Assistant 2 (DJI FPV) and now find FW 1.04.0000 to upgrade to BINDING the O3 to your goggles: - Goggles V2 have to be in newer mode (DJI FPV O3 mode) ATTENTION: now we need a different DJI Assistant 2 (consumer drone version) - called "DJI Assistant 2 (für Hobby-Drohnen)" in german - activate the O3 - upgrade O3 Airunit FW (for me it was 00.05.0203 to 01.01.0000) - unplug the USB from O3 unit and power it from your copter - press bind button on goggles then on O3 (like with old Vistas) and it should bind! Betaflight OSD: Have RX and TX wires connected to UART on the FC (neccessary for OSD to work and for things like Auto-Rec on arming...). There's no settings in the goggles to turn on "custom OSD" like in the past - now you have to copy this code here in the CLI of your Betaflight copter: set osd_displayport_device = MSP set displayport_msp_serial = {ConfiguratorUART} set vcd_video_system = PAL save instead of {ConfigurationUART} you just type in the number of the UART you connected your DJI O3 TX/RX. But minus 1 (because it starts to count with 0). So I use UART3 I write: set displayport_msp_serial = 2 I used the main battery leads (red and black wires soldered there directly) because the BEC from my FC might be to weak (new O3 needs 40% more amps?).
(das hier mein ich:) set osd_displayport_device = MSP set displayport_msp_serial = {ConfiguratorUART} set vcd_video_system = PAL save instead of {ConfigurationUART} you just type in the number of the UART you connected your DJI O3 TX/RX. But minus 1 (because it starts to count with 0). So I use UART3 I write: set displayport_msp_serial = 2

it's the first impression ;) but it's unfair. I'm sure O3 live feed is much improved, we just have to tweak it. and apperantly they've optimised the picture for the newer goggles with OLED... will try some extremes: 120fps mode (where it should even be darker) but also increasing the EV quite high and see how the sensor likes this :)
That's because the Gras is always greener on the other side (of the world) this time literally. Not feeling like flying much lately, so I'm more into ms fs2020 and vr these days. Hoping for some real snow and even white Xmas this time. Probbably not but currently it's really cold...
@@Rcschim It has been really cold here as well. It was 16 degrees C the other day. I almost had to go back to wearing long-pants but I decided to push through the pain 🙂
First we went like...yeah it's better because I can fly through this snow and interference. Now we are like the texture in the asphalt is better in this one. Lol
@@Rcschim make sure to follow their encoding guidelines to help keep them from punishing you: GOP = FPS/2, B-frames = 2, and keep the final bitrate under 100mbps
hey, thanks for the info - was searching for this! but there are many guides that didnt help me yet. I also have the feeling that they punish you, if you didn't upload for a few weeks. lowest priority in the queue ;)
Built-in gyro stabilization(RockSteady ) is also a huge advantage over vista, if I ever migrate to O3 it will be considering this aspect over anything else.
The image from the O3 is too dark. Did you change any camera settings? Set fixed ISO or shutter speed maybe. It doesn't go like this when settings are "auto"
Fascinating comparison Mario. The darker image from the O3 surprised me, as would have expected similar dynamic range from both. With Vista, I'm assuming you used the original DJI camera, not Caddx, or Runcam? The darkness at 7:56 almost makes O3 video appear Black&White vs much more vibrant colours from the Vista. The test at 8:03 (along the road) seems to be perfectly match for each versions better features. The dark high contrast winter scene fro O3, and vibrant spring Vista scene. Is interesting the Vista has higher bit-rate throughout, but image compression is definitely not there (H.264 vs H.265 on O3). Too bad we can't get an H.265 upgrade for the older Vista systems (DJI Air-light). The lack of INAV/Ardupilot OSD support and cameras costing ~$100 vs ~$50-$60 has be holding out for now. The O3 quality is that could easily eliminate an extra camera in most situations. Hopefully DJI offers better MSP-DisplayPort support in future release, not just partial support (lacking elements and character-set sprit options) Expect this should improve toward spring/summer. Thanks for taking the time and effort to fly all the flights and compile sample data.
Thanks, I was also surprised. It's a larger sensor now - so it should have an advantage over the vista- not the other way round. maybe this can be adjusted either with simple EV +... or the whole light handling could be improved via firmware... I also set the White balance on the vista really yellowish.... Yes, it's the OG DJI cam (the large one, from full Airunit) On the gree wood road (which was actually October 2021) was probbably with helicals or patches - but on the same location and orientation - so the higher bitrate here comes from the directional antennas. I asume the 265 codec needs more processing power than the old hardware can deliver (that's what MadsTech found at least). I'm curious for the O3 in my planes - because it has more max range and looks like a more stable link. Until I fly more wings again (spring) I hope the OSD issue is solved. Super excited that my SRT to Excel script still works! makes it quite easy to display the data!
@@Rcschim Good point, that H265 may need better hardware (compute, or memory) Comparing range of each would be interesting, as have not seen any real data. This probably an exercise better done in spring/summer when temperatures are warmer.
Tradeoffs, that should be FPV hobby second name :P O3 is really dark but I saw on the other reviews that the picture in Google 2 on OLEDs is much more bright. To be very honest the Live feed from Vista is nicer to the eye than O3 ;) Only when you look into technical details and details in the frame in general (yeah, H.265!) O3 wins but just from the "first look" Vista looks better for pilot ;)
Video feed in O3 is exactly like action2 ( with less options ) , for sure better than a normal feed old dji vista camera, but with the lack of WDR. Have you ever thought about trying and testing Walksnail HD system? You could be one of the best objective tester TH-camrs 👍
I actually had a DJI a2 on the Vista copter for comparison - but I didn't wanna make this video longer, so I skipped this comparison. But you're right - they are very close (maybe more barrel distortion on the O3?). If the manufacturers would send me a free sample I would take a look at it, but I didn't feel the need yet. I'm happy with the DJI video transmission for my kind of flying and since I have so many copters I wouldnt wanna swap systems.
That's a really good point, the image may not be optimized for the V2. I recently watched a video from KababFPV where he says that what you see in Goggles 2 is much more detailed (in the shadows) from what you see in the video file. th-cam.com/video/P8I9i437yjY/w-d-xo.html
yes, focus off, 50mbit (maybe you use 25mbit mode?) and also I change the WB (white balance) quite extreme to get this yellow colors (a bit too much here)
There were claims that the darker O3 picture and the loss of detail in dark areas is not an issue on the OLED screens of the new goggles. I don't know how much this is true.
The Falcon Unit is the only vista that had a 1080p sensor 4:3 and they discontinued it ,, not a fair comparison ,, 720p vs the 03 air unit at 1080 p now the falcon unit is badass
Great review as always. Is it fair to compare signal strength single antenna on vista and diversity on O3? Here we are checking the signal penetration which is independent on compression technology. And h265 definitely plays the key role in the o3 and walksnail. Thanks again.
Thanks. It is maybe a bit of an apples to oranges comparison here ;) (I also used 120fps mode on Vista vs. 60fps on O3) A old fullsize airunit might have had a bit better results than the vista, but not by much. about 265: someone pointed out that 265 is only used on Goggles 2 not on my Gv2. Indeed - at least the DVR recording from O3 is only h264 (tho considerable smaller filesize). Not sure if the transmission is in 265 and only the old googlesV2 are storing the vid in 264... anyhows, it's a great improvement over signal stability and "flyability". check my more recent video about the O3 to see how nice the DVR looks in buildings with low bitrate... Seasons Greetings down under!
I will stick to my vista for now, the image is more flyable and I enjoy the picture in my googles, but i loved my analog too when I started my journey in FPV.
yep, I was wondering how they could improve picture quality where Vista was already really good. But here there are some significant improvements. I already got the comment here that the dark colors are not so much a problem on the much more vibrant OLED displays of the goggles 2. So I will increase exposure quite a bit and should have better image.
I have heard some comments on the darker Image of the O3 AU. You will have this only when you are using Goggles V2. In the Goggles 2 the OLEDs have more dynamic and will show it much better than Goggles V2. KababFPV have pointed this out too. So with Goggles V2 maybe you have to change the EV+ to get more out of it.
Hi, first: are you from bavaria? Yesterday we saw a movie where they said "'zefix" quite often ;) Thanks for the info - makes sense - and in that case I will try to bump the EV even higher and see if it helps. The newer, larger sensor has to be good (better than vista!).
@@Rcschim Yes i am so Servus! I am running Goggles V1 at this moment and have some O3 AU here. I ordered allready the Goggles 2. My hope was a system that will be cross compatible. But it is not. So i will keep my Goggles V1 when i will fly with friends with Vistas and AU V1. With the O3 System came another hard cut for shared joy in the hobby. So i will only fly this system when i am alone.... But ok. I think the FPV cummunity has to understand that DJI is not 100% interrested to FPV alone. This will be only one tool more in there lineupd for filmmaking equipment. Give and take like allways with DJI....
you could go with the V2 goggles which can serve both standards. but the re-binding is a pain. I'm glad that I didn't sell my V1 goggles when the Potatoe drone came out and I got it. Now I have the V1 for most of my copters and the V2 for new O3... A friend wasn't happy with the fitting of the G2. The screens sit quite close to your eyelashes (or if further away the sharpness sweetspot is tiny). But the OLED screens will for sure be nice quality!
@@Rcschim No the Goggles V2 make no sense for me because when i update for O3 i can not use it to fly with friends that dont have the firmware update because they fly no O3 stuff. So V1 for friends on old Firmware and O3 for anlone stuff and maybe far in the future when more people can afford to spend so much money. So than i stay with the new Goggles 2 and hopefully the image quality and OLEDs will carry all the downsides...
@@Rcschim thanks, it would be super interesting to see the o3 unit with long Longrange 5.8 antennas, if the performance is better as with the short one on the unit.
@@cesarsommer I realize that you meant the TX antennas on the quad, not the RX on the Goggles? In most of my Antenna range tests I concentrated on the RX side.... I've seen this year, that using the TrueRC Singularity 12cm antennas on my fullsize airunit on a plane really INCREASES the range and stability there (compared to shorter stock TX antennas). Not sure if I already wanna use aftermarket antennas on the new O3 ;) First I would try to see how far I can go with stock Antennas (probbably more range than I need :)
@@Rcschim True im also using Truerc 12cm antenna on my LR quad this is why im asking 😁 so 2x the 5.8Ghz antenna should give only by physics already better transmission as they Stand further out also for the built, i just use the ufl Adapter to the antenna mount and can keept the Rest the same. Agreed, to some extent. Mostly form factor. 1/2 the size, 1/3 the weight is appealing. So are the OLED screens! 👍 My V2's have prescription lenses for my eyes, done by the exquisite RHO Lens in Germany! Such precision, quality lenses give me absolutely PERFECT image quality in my V2's! Highly recommended! I also have the great iFlight Crystal antennas, and a Fatstrap, and the 2nd gen. foam. They fit so good, but are heavy and slightly awkward on my face. Fatstrap helped a lot with that! Let's just say they're awful big on my face. Still, hard to complain when the image quality is so damn good! 😎🤘
Hi, the O3 has nothing to do with how you control your aircraft. If you ask because you'd also like to use the radio control link (with DJI FPV remote) - this is an easy yes! BUT - you need a flight controller on the plane. The radio link only sends your control commands over "sbus" protocol - so you need something on the other side (the plane) to translate this into steering commands to your servos. Now might be the best time to watch a few INAV tutorials from "Mr.D Falling with Style" or from Pawel Spychalski or Painless360 about INAV on planes. Looks complicated at first, but will give you so nice options (like autolaunch, return home with GPS...) - Sidenote: if you just wanna use the O3 for video on a plane: if the O3 doesnt get an "armed" command (when you start your drone) then it will not go to full RF power... only when connected with a FC the O3 will have this ability...
Hello, your work is fantastic, a reference for me, I count the days for me to get my package with the o3 air unit, the googles v2, I start in DJI and I have many doubts. Can I record OSD in the goggles DVR? I need to know the GPS coordinates in case of accident to find the model. It would be ideal to do a tutorial for clumsy how to do it. A greeting and so on.
Thanks Alex. What radio controller do you use? if it's an openTX or EdgeTX one, you can easily enable SD Logging. If you drone (betaflight?) has a GPS on it, the SD Logs will have all the data. Check Oscar Liangs great blog for super tutorials on how to set SD Logging up, and also read about betaflight telemetry. very powerful. I also made a little video about 4 ways to find your drone in case of a crash: th-cam.com/video/_JBHG1bBRZ8/w-d-xo.html about OSD and recording: if you really have the Goggles V2 (the larger ones) they record a TXT file (SRT) with some info - but not the GPS. But if you see the Betaflight OSD in your goggles, the last GPS coords will still be on screen even if video is gone (see my video above). if you have the brand new Goggles 2 (the smaller ones) these apperantly record (and burn into) the OSD along with the DVR video. nice - but not so important if you have SD logs of your telemetry. greets, Mario

Great review. I'm glad it's better, but only marginally. I will buy a couple 03 units, maybe. but don't really want to update my entire fleet yet. I'm still very happy with my V2's and Vista's. Maybe next Christmas.
same here: it wouldnt really make sense to swap all good airunits and vistas in my fleet. but maybe the copters (or planes) with O3 will get more air-time ;) It's funny how my oldest 6S capeable copter (the HGLRC Sector 5) is re-vitalized now with this video system :) It was just hanging there on the wall with everything except a cam and vtx - so it was the perfect test copter ;) (and it flies really nice now with BF 4.3 and stock PIDs ;)
@@Rcschim Me too. I definitely want an 03 unit to play with, but I'm going to hold off to see what advancements happen in the coming months with firmware updates and pricing. If there's one thing I've learned being in this hobby so long is, Never buy the beta product at full price. I'll wait.
@@MOEMUGGY That's normally true but this isn't really a beta product. It's the successor to the previous version. I don't think you'll see much in terms of bugs. Also I wouldn't expect the pricing to change too much. It's competitively priced when you factor in the cost of a decent action camera, which DJI is, I don't see the price changing too much. The people that are really benefiting from this '03 air unit are people that were just about to purchase a new action cam, like myself. Saved me $350. "dan gerouse" - like your nick ;) an easily moveable O3 would be nice. One could try to fit the AU + Lens in a gopro sized package (incl. the gopro fingers). only need to modify the RX/TX cable on each of the copters where you want OSD...
Hello! very good your tutorial! My question is, using the v2 glasses, is the difference in what is seen in the glasses very noticeable? between old air unit (with dji camera) and o3. Considering old air unit in high quality mode and 50mbps. Regards !
Hi, yes imho even with the "low res" goggles v2 (that I own) you definitly see a much clearer image with O3. On paper the resolution isn't that much higher - but the compression is better. for example you see much more of those fine details like branches or gras with O3 - where Vista is just blurred.
@Rcschim ya, bitrate and quality compression are very important and its why you see TH-cam and twitch focused on it and obviously av1 is the biggest news concerning this which I wonder about being used for digital fpv, open source and the bit rate saving?
@@pottyputter05 a good compressor (av1) isn't always the best choice for low latency realtime application. it might save bitrate but it could demand an really fast chip in the goggles and on the copter...
I used goggles v2 with O3 air unit, i have problem to connect gogglesV2 with android to display osd on my android. I hope my android can diplay like what I have seen on my goggles
in the meantime they released a newer firmware and it's a bit better. I use +0.7 exposure value and have it on auto, this way it works quite ok. Aside from some dark scenes Image quality is really great of course!
@@publicname515 I've checked the changes on the new FW here: th-cam.com/video/t6m9tIkMKBY/w-d-xo.html but I think I just compared O3 old vs new FW. Overall the O3 got a bit better, not perfect yet, but still way better than older vistas in most cases. @@Rcschim the Vista still look brighter when going into the warehouse. The O3 still takes a longer time to light up. Even with the new firmware from your other video.

Leaves on trees block the signal...so comparing the 03 in a snow scene isn't really fair...?...😮😳😏🇬🇧 I can see DJI selling a load of the new air units though for the built in stabilized video it brings. The dynamic range of the 03 units camera is terrible...😮😏🇬🇧
winter vs. early fall comparison was just improvised here. flying there the first pack with my O3 I didnt have the Vista copter with me for comparison. at home I remembered that I flew there often enough - andn I found the part where I flew exactly the same path. Dynamic range of DJI a2 wasn't that great either. But for hobby use this cam is quite decent. Also you'd have to price in the difference for Vista (~150$) vs. O3 (250$) - 100$ difference - there's no HD cam on the market for 100$ that gives you NEGATIVE 50g of weight and that ammount of onboard image quality ;)

@@mydayq correct in theory, but it would need to be in a real BW mode with limited count of colors to need less bitrate. since it's just a color picture with mainly white and black colors I don't think that it needs less.
All looks very good. I have a dji air unit that wouldn't show a picture in my goggles. I put another one in the drone and it worked so no issues with setup or wiring of the quad. I put the the first one back in and nothing. I took the antennas off (under a fan) and powered it up and there was a picture again. Plugged the antennas back in and powered up and no picture again. They are original dji antennas. I did this ten times and the result was the same every time. Anyone have any idea what is going on? Thanks.
I think I had something similar all the way back in the beginning of DJI airunit 1 2020? To me it was just some loose antennas on the copter. Check bardwells videos, I think a black screen now video images (but connection?) could also be a loose DJI lens to airunit cable. check both ends... maybe the plugging in of antennas just moves the cam cable a tiny bit? you could also cross check and use antennas from another airunit. maybe the mmcx connector on this airunit is broken? fw updated the airunit? try the lens module from the working airunit on the not working one - and the other way round - if the error moves over you know it's either the lens or the cable... good luck!
Goggles 2 hurt face and are hard to center on eyes without edge blur, latency noticably higher even in 30ms mode, image much darker and makes low light difficult, annoying little stutters on live and recorded video, higher power drain and no 20x20 holes on AU.
@@dabfpv Not tried the WS goggles but heard from others they are fairly comfortable. Shame WS image quality isn't up to scratch but that said they are making progress slowly. I got some replacement foam and silicone padding ordered so we will see how that pans out. If not then I might just settle with v1 + WTFOS till O4.
I think the main problem is the 03 widest aperture is just f2.8. Ok, but not great for low light. I'd like to see if you can adjust brightness/contrast in the goggles to get a better image for flying in low light areas. Not too much to lose that nice contrasty image the Vista doesn't have, but enough to brighten image quality when 03 is entering low light areas. 😎🤘
@@Rcschim AWESOME! Because that's really the only complaint most people have with the 03 air unit. Kinda dark in the shadows, and in general. You could make 3 different, almost like presets, that change the brightness, etc, and you could do a poll to see which one most people like the most! FUN! Then, we could pick our own favorite, and as soon as we get the 03 mounted, simply change to those favorite settings and off we go....into the wild blue yonder! 🤪🤘
yes, sorry for the apples to oranges here.. Vista= lowlatency, O3=60FPS mode see my last video where I tried a few things about the dark colors... There I also used 120fps mode with O3 and it was not an issue in the dark...
Interesting. Doesn't seem much better quality than Walksnail on some of that later footage though. The grass smearing isn't really any better than Walksnail.
dear friend. i have google integre with dji remote controller 2. i just to buy a bnf quad with caddx vista.could you confirm i could use it with may google and remote controller?
@@GearZenChannel from the compatibility matrix it should work. In my case, where I use the older goggles v2, I need to use the old dji rc. But with Integra or g2 it should work with newer rc2
Network connection speed, and viewing platform can effect options for video quality. Often on mobile, only lower resolutions supported. Watch out for the YT "auto" option, as it can lie. eg: even though 4k uploaded, best I see in 1080p
here it was just my inpatience ;) published to soon, didn't realize it was only avail in 360p. Set it to unlisted quickly - but the note to subbers was already sent automatically... took unusually long for youtube to process my 4k60. A commenter here gave me some encoding tips / guides - maybe this makes it quicker next time...

pretty normal. guess 25° maybe 30°? but in my tests (also in my newer one) the cam angle is too steep into the sky for slow exploration. In that scenarios I'm looking too much in the sky and then the pic get's too dark...
@@Rcschim haha I see. Maybe you should do a side by side so can really compare the darker parts between the Vista and O3. To be fair to Vista you should set transmission to 50Mbps
I don't understand ..if it was analog and you flew through garage , it would flicker white outs, why does digital not do that? both still transmit through air wave. help me understand my OSD is killing me.
You mean your ocd, right? The magic of dji transmission comes from the retransmission in case of a bad packet. The latency goes up a bit but no flicker ;)
@@Rcschim yes OCD. but OSD could mean , obsessive stupidity distorter lol. So when I fly my analog behind some trees and get some flash outs like we see ..Ok am I missing something . is this recording , your goggle dvr?
Just for fun I asked ChatGPT your question, here's the answer: "An analog signal is a continuously variable physical quantity that represents information. In contrast, a digital signal is a sequence of discrete values that represent information. When an analog signal is transmitted through the air, it is subject to various types of interference, such as noise and distortion, which can cause the signal to become distorted or faded. This can result in a "flickering" or "white out" effect when the signal is displayed on a screen or monitor. On the other hand, a digital signal is less susceptible to interference because it is composed of discrete values rather than a continuously variable quantity. Digital signals are often transmitted using error-correction codes, which help to ensure that the signal can be recovered accurately despite any noise or interference that may be present. As a result, digital signals tend to be more robust and reliable than analog signals, particularly when transmitted over long distances or through challenging environments."
nope, 4:3 is 2.7k only. But to be fair - that's good enough for me. If I want 4k quality out of the O3Airunit, I have to be in 16:9 as a compromise.... The image and stability is quite a step up tho... (sorry that you had to watch my vid in non 4k, messed up the publishing yesterday ;)
Yes, but only because I didn't use the 120fps mode on the O3. I thought the image will be too dark with shorter shutter time.... If you use the high fps mode you get lower latency on the o3 as well... (100fps on g2 and 120fps on gv2)
I'd love to try the G2 for their OLEDs and better colors and slightly higher res, smaller formfactor. But from a friend I know that the fitting can be a bit problematic. Smaller "sweet spot" of sharpness. Since they are at 850€ pricetag here in EU - I'm not gonna try them soon ;) From specs: if you need the lowest latency - the Gv2 are better (120fps), but have a bit lower resolution (which is hardly noticeable). greets, Mario
@@Rcschim I know it can be very subjective but I couldn't go back to the V2 after flying with the Goggles 2 at 1080p. You wouldn't think the difference would be that huge, but it was night and day to me. 810p looks very similar to 720p, which can be a huge change when going to 1080p
@@matthewbradley8971 Thanks for the opinion. I'd be quite curious to test the G2. But a friend of mine sold them and went back to V2. Maybe on the next spring FPV meet someone will show up with G2... sadly they are ~ 850$ here in EU - and this is too much for the small? additional quality improvement...
Hi, seen a comment somewhere about flying together - now I dont find it anymore ;) just send me a mail with your phone and I'll contact you on whatsapp or telegram. but currently the days are short, cold and I don't fly too much. But spring for sure. I try to meet up with a few buddies as often as we can and do nice flights together... looking forward to flying with you...
Are you sure? Where did you find this info? Would be quite the placebo effect for me then ;) how do we explain the better details with less Bitrate? Not only from using the 265 as codec but also some other clever coding?
@RCSchim I think it was Mads tech. I looked for it but couldn't find it, I have watched so much 03 content lately. So maybe I miss understood. I remember something g about v2 is h264 and goggles 2 is h265. I apologize if I'm incorrect. I'll look some more and link it if I find it.
Ok, the DVR files from O3 are h264 - you're right! in 4:3 mode they are 1080x810 with 60.0024fps and around 20mbit datarate as MOV files. (1440x810 in 16:9 on Gv2) Vista is MP4 file extension also with h264 960x720 with exactly 60fps but they use 40mbit of datarate. So I'm even more curious now why the vista looks so blocky over the gras where the O3 looks better. O3 uses half of the bitrate for writing the file... confusing.
@@grampafpv maybe the h264 vs h265 is just on the storage side (when written as a file) and here it is no problem that they still store in h264 on the Gv2 where they can write to h265 on the more powerfull G2. transmitted thru the air might have nothing to do with h264 or h265 codec - but is a different approach... however they do it, it's clear (literally) that O3 does it even better :)
If you have footage recorded by the goggles, I would like to see that and compare what you were seeing to the drone's really sharp imagery. Thanks for the other comparison.
@@LucizenVisualsAre you sure that wasn't drone dvr footage. What goggles were you recording on? If that's really goggle footage, its the clearest I've seen any goggles make.
hi, only 11:16 and at the end you see HD recording from the copter - other footage is DVR footage recorded on either Gv1 or Gv2. if I had the newwer Goggles 2 - their goggle DVR recordings would show the fancy OSD from DJI (because it is now encoded, burnt into the video). the older goggles record some OSD info in text files (SRT) which can later be used (as I do with those bars and bitrate readings). You can also import those text files into excel and make a chart.
I didn't fly a lot of DJI vista/airunit in the last year since I have the O3. for me the main seller of O3 over (cheap, used) vistas can be the high quality recordings - saving weight of a gopro... but I agree, wouldnt buy O3's for all of my copters. one major adventage of Vista/AU is the nicer OSD if you have WTFOSD enabled!
Thanks for this video, not blown away by the 03 just yet.
And again one of the most reality related videos in FPV. Thank you so much, your content is one of the most useful of all the channels out there! Looking forward to some antenna tests with the O3 🙂
Thanks for the comment, it's messages like these that motivate me to share more content and do my research ;)
Still running your custom antenna on my V1 goggles haha. Nice to see you still making videos. I'm still waiting on my Goggles 2 and new unit to ship. Won't be here til end of January.
Vista is better for flying but the O3 replaces the action cam.
The O3 footage in some parts I thought was in black and white setting to start with. The color looks terrible while the vista looks great. I would hope this can be corrected.
The camera cables are not the same on the O3 side I don't believe they are interchangeable. I think they could have a different amount of pins.
yep, that's the way it looks here in winter. almost bw ;)
I've turned up white balance on vista quite a lot, looks nicer that way. didnt do this on the O3. O3 can for sure be tweaked more. hopefully also in the dark areas...
I have to doublecheck - but I fear you are right, the MIPI cable might be different.
short cable is the reason why I cannot install the O3 everywhere I want... (chimera7?)
@@Rcschim Hi Schim, have you tried flying in D-Cinelike mode? It makes the image less contrasty.
Thank you for this comparison video seeing the real value in your work as always
Why is the O3 so damn dark I don’t understand
Überhaupt wenns was Neues zu entdecken / testen gibt.
I dont' like how much darker the o3 is. Maybe there are settings for the camera that can change that. I just bound an o3 to my V2 goggles in my house and the picture was grainy because it's so dark in my house, but then I rebound my Vista to my goggles and it wasn't nearly as grainy.
If it's grainy, iso had to go up high. Maybe try reducing the fps to 50 or 60 in low light!
Don't use nd filter obviously...
You are also in low power mode till u take off!
@@LovesM855A1that wouldnt matter for light.
Interesting that it is like this. Usually the higher the frame rate the darker the photo due to the shutter speed having to be quicker which lets less light through. I heard the o3 lowlight performance is very poor though. Maybe its just the sensor
Prerequisites / Firmware upgrade journey:
- DJI Goggles V2 need to be on a new firmware! 01.04.0000!
- DJI O3 Airunit needs to be activated and on the latest firmware!
- first update your DJI Assistant(s) 2 (just to be sure)
(note that you need both, the "DJI FPV" and the "consumer drones" version of the DJI Assistant 2! Make sure to INSTALL DJI Assistant 2 with Admin rights, else you might get stuck at the black DOS window (where it's installing drivers)
- apply the ROOT Hack (WTF.OSD) before the Goggles FW upgrade!
With the new firmware you will not be able to go back and root your goggles anymore to use the WTF OSD tools, so you have one option less in the future!
My V2s needed a downgrad to FW 01.00.0606 so the WTF hack could be applied.
- switch the Goggles to DJI FPV mode (or Avata mode)
- use DJI Assistant 2 (DJI FPV) and now find FW 1.04.0000 to upgrade to
BINDING the O3 to your goggles:
- Goggles V2 have to be in newer mode (DJI FPV O3 mode)
ATTENTION: now we need a different DJI Assistant 2 (consumer drone version) - called "DJI Assistant 2 (für Hobby-Drohnen)" in german
- activate the O3
- upgrade O3 Airunit FW (for me it was 00.05.0203 to 01.01.0000)
- unplug the USB from O3 unit and power it from your copter
- press bind button on goggles then on O3 (like with old Vistas) and it should bind!
Betaflight OSD:
Have RX and TX wires connected to UART on the FC (neccessary for OSD to work and for things like Auto-Rec on arming...).
There's no settings in the goggles to turn on "custom OSD" like in the past - now you have to copy this code here in the CLI of your Betaflight copter:
set osd_displayport_device = MSP
set displayport_msp_serial = {ConfiguratorUART}
set vcd_video_system = PAL
save
instead of {ConfigurationUART} you just type in the number of the UART you connected your DJI O3 TX/RX. But minus 1 (because it starts to count with 0).
So I use UART3 I write:
set displayport_msp_serial = 2
I used the main battery leads (red and black wires soldered there directly) because the BEC from my FC might be to weak (new O3 needs 40% more amps?).
set osd_displayport_device = MSP
set displayport_msp_serial = {ConfiguratorUART}
set vcd_video_system = PAL
save
instead of {ConfigurationUART} you just type in the number of the UART you connected your DJI O3 TX/RX. But minus 1 (because it starts to count with 0).
So I use UART3 I write:
set displayport_msp_serial = 2

I LOL'd when you said, "overall the image is much nicer and clearer on the vista. Much nicer is the wrong word". 🤣😂😛 I'm so glad you're being honest.
it's the first impression ;) but it's unfair. I'm sure O3 live feed is much improved, we just have to tweak it. and apperantly they've optimised the picture for the newer goggles with OLED...
will try some extremes: 120fps mode (where it should even be darker) but also increasing the EV quite high and see how the sensor likes this :)
I’m interested in how much darker it’ll be in 120hz because 60hz looks choppy while flying to my eyes.
Great vid Mario. Why is Austria black and white in winter... where does all the colour go? :-D
Lol
sorry that you had to watch this in low def, accidentally released it too early. Sometimes YT takes for ever to recode it for HD or 4k...
@WK-fpv i got it only in 360p but that´s YT.
@@Rcschim make sure to follow their encoding guidelines to help keep them from punishing you: GOP = FPS/2, B-frames = 2, and keep the final bitrate under 100mbps

Built-in gyro stabilization(RockSteady ) is also a huge advantage over vista, if I ever migrate to O3 it will be considering this aspect over anything else.
Yes, but gyroflow support is even better. A bit more work, but very flexible. I wish it could do 4k60 in 4:3 tho
Great comparison video 🔥 That low light exposure delay may be a deal breaker for me.
@7:39 looked like you were peeing on the wall there for second 😂😂
The image from the O3 is too dark. Did you change any camera settings? Set fixed ISO or shutter speed maybe. It doesn't go like this when settings are "auto"
All on auto as far as I remember. Maybe my cam angle was too high in the sky for the slow cautious flying around the house...
Hopefully DJI offers better MSP-DisplayPort support in future release, not just partial support (lacking elements and character-set sprit options)
Expect this should improve toward spring/summer.
Yes, it's the OG DJI cam (the large one, from full Airunit)
On the gree wood road (which was actually October 2021) was probbably with helicals or patches - but on the same location and orientation - so the higher bitrate here comes from the directional antennas.
@@Rcschim Good point, that H265 may need better hardware (compute, or memory)
Comparing range of each would be interesting, as have not seen any real data.
I'm happy with the DJI video transmission for my kind of flying and since I have so many copters I wouldnt wanna swap systems.
is the picture contrast on the O3 tuned for the OLEDs on Goggle 2?
Yep, looks like it is, I will try with higher Exposure values...
That's a really good point, the image may not be optimized for the V2. I recently watched a video from KababFPV where he says that what you see in Goggles 2 is much more detailed (in the shadows) from what you see in the video file. th-cam.com/video/P8I9i437yjY/w-d-xo.html
Now that there is new software that improved the lower light handling does it makes sense to revisit low latency Vista vs 120Hz O3 in goggle dvr?
For sure! I will test soon. Excited that they specifically addressed the back light underexpose issue... but I was quite sure it should be possible.
Your vista footage for the v1 s look much better than mine, any tips or suggestions. It looks like you have focus mode off?
yes, focus mode off
yes, focus off, 50mbit (maybe you use 25mbit mode?) and also I change the WB (white balance) quite extreme to get this yellow colors (a bit too much here)
Must be focus mode and my editing 😅 I use iMovie on my iPhone. Thank you 🙏🏼
There were claims that the darker O3 picture and the loss of detail in dark areas is not an issue on the OLED screens of the new goggles. I don't know how much this is true.
yep, heard this a few times now and will try to confirm if setting the exposure value really high improves the dark areas while flying...

great idea with mounting it bit higher up! and very nice video
They both film the white sky very well...
60fps on O3)
A old fullsize airunit might have had a bit better results than the vista, but not by much.
about 265: someone pointed out that 265 is only used on Goggles 2 not on my Gv2.
On how many MW is the vista running? Is it on 1200mw? And had you done the ham file hack to get more mw out of the o3 air unit aswell?
I fly both units like most pilots do ;)
I will stick to my vista for now, the image is more flyable and I enjoy the picture in my googles, but i loved my analog too when I started my journey in FPV.
yep, I was wondering how they could improve picture quality where Vista was already really good.
Yesterday we saw a movie where they said "'zefix" quite often ;)
Thanks for the info - makes sense - and in that case I will try to bump the EV even higher and see if it helps.
So than i stay with the new Goggles 2 and hopefully the image quality and OLEDs will carry all the downsides...
nice compare! Theoretically the "old LR Antennas" should work if the remote is not used (2.4Ghz)
yep, I have dual band patches (ORT Digieyes) on my v2 goggles - but a normal 5.8 directional should work as well.
Not sure if I already wanna use aftermarket antennas on the new O3 ;)
First I would try to see how far I can go with stock Antennas (probbably more range than I need :)
Theres a cool iflight Video o3 on a Mountain with Stock he flies 7km..
I’m like you, I can’t see a reason to pay all that $$ for g2. The image of the 03 looks flawless in my v2 goggles.
Agreed, to some extent. Mostly form factor. 1/2 the size, 1/3 the weight is appealing. So are the OLED screens! 👍
My V2's have prescription lenses for my eyes, done by the exquisite RHO Lens in Germany!
@@KOrnhOliO1 Oh for sure! Can we only imagine what will come out next? 😄
Any idea of the o3 unit works with fpv planes with alierons, elevator, rudder?
Hi, the O3 has nothing to do with how you control your aircraft. If you ask because you'd also like to use the radio control link (with DJI FPV remote) - this is an easy yes!
BUT - you need a flight controller on the plane. The radio link only sends your control commands over "sbus" protocol - so you need something on the other side (the plane) to translate this into steering commands to your servos.
Now might be the best time to watch a few INAV tutorials from "Mr.D Falling with Style" or from Pawel Spychalski or Painless360 about INAV on planes.
Looks complicated at first, but will give you so nice options (like autolaunch, return home with GPS...)
-
Sidenote: if you just wanna use the O3 for video on a plane: if the O3 doesnt get an "armed" command (when you start your drone) then it will not go to full RF power... only when connected with a FC the O3 will have this ability...
Thanks for this info. I to was looking at this air unit for a plane and wasn’t planning on running a FC.
I might look into walksnail instead.
I also made a little video about 4 ways to find your drone in case of a crash: th-cam.com/video/_JBHG1bBRZ8/w-d-xo.html
about OSD and recording: if you really have the Goggles V2 (the larger ones) they record a TXT file (SRT) with some info - but not the GPS.
@@Rcschim I use the TBS tango 2 v3. Thanks for the help, I'm going to read.
have you had any issues with the onboard recording? I have lots of skipped frames and makes the recording not usable... :(
Sounds like you should try a faster (or just different) SD card. Had no stuttering on the recordings not in 4k not in 2.7k

Great review. I'm glad it's better, but only marginally. I will buy a couple 03 units, maybe. but don't really want to update my entire fleet yet. I'm still very happy with my V2's and Vista's. Maybe next Christmas.
same here: it wouldnt really make sense to swap all good airunits and vistas in my fleet.
but maybe the copters (or planes) with O3 will get more air-time ;)
It's funny how my oldest 6S capeable copter (the HGLRC Sector 5) is re-vitalized now with this video system :) It was just hanging there on the wall with everything except a cam and vtx - so it was the perfect test copter ;) (and it flies really nice now with BF 4.3 and stock PIDs ;)
Edit:
Try to figure out how to mount it in a way that you can transfer it to different quads quickly and easily. That's what I'm doing. I only bought one 03 air unit for my three main quads.
"dan gerouse" - like your nick ;)
an easily moveable O3 would be nice.

Hi, yes imho even with the "low res" goggles v2 (that I own) you definitly see a much clearer image with O3. On paper the resolution isn't that much higher - but the compression is better. for example you see much more of those fine details like branches or gras with O3 - where Vista is just blurred.
@@Rcschim Thank you!
Is O3 really so much darker than Vista?
in the meantime they released a newer firmware and it's a bit better. I use +0.7 exposure value and have it on auto, this way it works quite ok. Aside from some dark scenes Image quality is really great of course!
@@Rcschim Please can you do a new comparison with the new firmware and new settings vs the old vista??
@@publicname515 I've checked the changes on the new FW here: th-cam.com/video/t6m9tIkMKBY/w-d-xo.html but I think I just compared O3 old vs new FW.
Overall the O3 got a bit better, not perfect yet, but still way better than older vistas in most cases. For me the best new feature: the quality of onboard REC in 4k60 is decent enough that I don't need a gopro most flights. This saves me 150gr easy...
@@Rcschim the Vista still look brighter when going into the warehouse. The O3 still takes a longer time to light up. Even with the new firmware from your other video.
Can you try the same with the original air unit from DJI ? i have seen videos where they say it has better quality than the vista
The full airunit is maybe a bit better because of its 2 antennas. But the codec will be the same, still 264 here and demanding more Bitrate for less image quality.
@@Rcschim Thanks for your reply
i saw this video 2 years ago, i cant say if it is only because of the two antennas, but it might be wrong

You’re using the DJI goggles v2 for these tests right?
yes
Would you mind sharing a link to the print for the 03 cam?
It's in the link section of the video desc. Its base is meant for the holes of the sector5 tho...
Leaves on trees block the signal...so comparing the 03 in a snow scene isn't really fair...?...😮😳😏🇬🇧
I can see DJI selling a load of the new air units though for the built in stabilized video it brings.
@@Rcschim Agreed, I've always maintained bolting a house brick like a GoPro to anything that flies is frankly mental...Let's not talk about it's dynamic range. I have a DJI Mini 2 and love it, but I've just gone Walksnail for my FPV flying. The oleds in the goggles are amazing...I'll still fly analogue though I'm sure ..😮😳😏🇬🇧
And also in winter it's bw picture, doesn't need that much of a bitrate as color picture
Check bardwells videos, I think a black screen now video images (but connection?) could also be a loose DJI lens to airunit cable. check both ends... maybe the plugging in of antennas just moves the cam cable a tiny bit?
you could also cross check and use antennas from another airunit.
maybe the mmcx connector on this airunit is broken?
fw updated the airunit?
try the lens module from the working airunit on the not working one - and the other way round - if the error moves over you know it's either the lens or the cable...
good luck!
@RCSchim thank you for the reply. I will try all you have suggested. You have earned a sub too. Cheers
Goggles 2 hurt face and are hard to center on eyes without edge blur, latency noticably higher even in 30ms mode, image much darker and makes low light difficult, annoying little stutters on live and recorded video, higher power drain and no 20x20 holes on AU.
True, the 2 goggles are extremely uncomfortable. The perfect system would be comfortable Walksnail goggles with an image from DJI O3 ;)
Does vista has better penetration?
Nope
I think the main problem is the 03 widest aperture is just f2.8. Ok, but not great for low light.
I'd like to see if you can adjust brightness/contrast in the goggles to get a better image for flying in low light areas. Not too much to lose that nice contrasty image the Vista doesn't have, but enough to brighten image quality when 03 is entering low light areas. 😎🤘
Will try for sure.
Was that low latency mode on vista?
yes, sorry for the apples to oranges here.. Vista= lowlatency, O3=60FPS mode
see my last video where I tried a few things about the dark colors... There I also used 120fps mode with O3 and it was not an issue in the dark...
Interesting. Doesn't seem much better quality than Walksnail on some of that later footage though. The grass smearing isn't really any better than Walksnail.

As a result, digital signals tend to be more robust and reliable than analog signals, particularly when transmitted over long distances or through challenging environments."
most of what you saw in the video was DVR recorded in my goggles, only a short example of onbaord HD recording was in there.
@@Rcschim My life is complete now ! Now I will sleep .Thank you . I want to be digital some day 😜
4k doesnt do 4-3?
nope, 4:3 is 2.7k only. But to be fair - that's good enough for me. If I want 4k quality out of the O3Airunit, I have to be in 16:9 as a compromise....
The image and stability is quite a step up tho...
(sorry that you had to watch my vid in non 4k, messed up the publishing yesterday ;)
O3 have much higher laterncy than vista
3x-4x ms vs 2x-3x ms
Yes, but only because I didn't use the 120fps mode on the O3. I thought the image will be too dark with shorter shutter time....
If you use the high fps mode you get lower latency on the o3 as well...
(100fps on g2 and 120fps on gv2)
what is better at this time?? Goggles v2 Or Goggles 2☺
I'd love to try the G2 for their OLEDs and better colors and slightly higher res, smaller formfactor.
But from a friend I know that the fitting can be a bit problematic. Smaller "sweet spot" of sharpness.
Since they are at 850€ pricetag here in EU - I'm not gonna try them soon ;)
From specs: if you need the lowest latency - the Gv2 are better (120fps), but have a bit lower resolution (which is hardly noticeable).

H265 is only with goggles 2. That is h264 we are seeing.
(1440x810 in 16:9 on Gv2)
Vista is MP4 file extension also with h264 960x720 with exactly 60fps but they use 40mbit of datarate. So I'm even more curious now why the vista looks so blocky over the gras where the O3 looks better. O3 uses half of the bitrate for writing the file... confusing.
@RCSchim it's gotta be the compression. They are packaging the tx/rx data differently. Maybe just smaller packets along with improved software.
@@grampafpv maybe the h264 vs h265 is just on the storage side (when written as a file) and here it is no problem that they still store in h264 on the Gv2 where they can write to h265 on the more powerfull G2.
transmitted thru the air might have nothing to do with h264 or h265 codec - but is a different approach...
however they do it, it's clear (literally) that O3 does it even better :)

hi, only 11:16 and at the end you see HD recording from the copter - other footage is DVR footage recorded on either Gv1 or Gv2.
if I had the newwer Goggles 2 - their goggle DVR recordings would show the fancy OSD from DJI (because it is now encoded, burnt into the video).
the older goggles record some OSD info in text files (SRT) which can later be used (as I do with those bars and bitrate readings). You can also import those text files into excel and make a chart.
