    Excellent presentation.
    I have a similar compact setup that has caught many trout and grayling in Maine, Canada, Wyoming, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Alaska. A key element is the confidence in the gear and yourself.

      @@pepe.sanchez when you get a snag with braided line it seems it's there to stay because there is no stretch but with mono it's got some spring ( stretch) and one can usually get your gear back. That's been my experience at least.

    • @CanadaFishingGuide

      Because these trout are shy creatures and 6lb clear monofilament is far more stealthy and less likely to spook fish than braid.

    Another awesome informative video Mike. Thanks for posting. I was wondering if I could ask you a little bit more about perch in the Algonquin lakes. I have read and heard from some people that when the perch are in lakes the brook trout fishing is terrible. I just got back from a trip where I bushwhacked into a back lake in hopes of some big brookies and all I caught were perch.....100's of them all over the lake. Is there ever a time when you start catching perch in lakes and just know that there will not be brook trout or do you see perch a s a good sign? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • @jamesgorman899

    I looked on the regs and it says all worms restricted from Algonquin..?? Didn't name any lakes that you could use them? I'm really confused

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James you did not read that because it doesn't exist in the regs. Live bait fish are banned in Algonquin and have been for years, it certainly says that. There are a TINY handful of lakes where organic bait including worms aren't allowed but in 99.9% of Algonquin lakes worms are perfectly fine. Cheers

      @@CanadaFishingGuide Ok thanks a lot, I thought I saw that in the regs a while back, must've mixed up that with the baitfish ban. Hoping to get into some brookies up there this fall. Tight lines!

    I like the idea of a spoon with a worm trailing on a leader. I don't think the tackle looks excessive. In fact, I would add a fly rod and a box of flies but that's me. I would imagine your son is about ready to jump out of his skin in anticipation. At his age, I used to get so jacked up for fishing trips that I couldn't sleep for a week before we left.

    • @CanadaFishingGuide

  • @LostLakes
    @LostLakes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Enjoyed your insights. Why do you prefer mono for specs?
    I'm the same--much more fishing gear than one would normally bring, though as a soloist I narrow it down to two rods per trip. Also, I started using a backpack this year to carry my tackle, and that's been advantageous on portages.
    Currently looking into getting a couple of lightweight rod/reel cases because I'm tired of my rods snagging on branches and such on the trails---not to mention the potential of damaging them. Have you ever taken this approach?

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I use braid for everything these days except casting for brook trout. There are two primary reasons why. First and foremost I believe you'll get more hits with clear mono compared to braid because it's far less visible to the trout. In glass water clear lakes it often makes a huge difference! Second with the short fast action spinning rods I prefer to use, mono has way more stretch and acts almost as a shock absorber compared to braid which has no stretch. I believe I land more big fish because of that. I have always carried my rods in a light tube on canoe trips. (never a rod/reel case). Reels go in my tackle bag when I'm traveling and not fishing.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree with the shock absorbency on a short fast-action rod, but I still prefer a fluoro lead on braid to achieve the lack of visibility but also have the sensitivity.
      That's a good approach for the gear's sake, but kind of a hassle to dismantle them between lakes!

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've always suggested to people if it works for you, then really that's all that matters. Myself, I believe a fluoro tippet at the end of the braid is still too visible. But like I said, if it works for you then why change? :)

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tylerhall2878 In the spring when I'm targeting lake trout most often I'm trolling. My go-to lure is either a J-11 or J-13 floating jointed Rapala. On a long line it'll dive 4-5' and will never twist your line. It's also a great choice when you're paddling faster as it tracks very well at higher speeds. Firetiger, fluorescent orange and brook trout pattern are 3 of my favorite colors.

    Informative video, thanks for the tips. Quick question. Have you ever gone fishing on Whitefish Lake in Algonquin? I’m in on splitting the lease costs with family friends and go up there as much as I can, since I was a little kid. I’m more of a bass/ pike fishermen but want to get on more trout fishing especially in Algonquin. Have you had much luck on that lake or Rock lake for brook trout? Or surrounding area lakes. Someone told me Pen lake and Pen lake portage is good. Caught a nice 21” largemouth bass on Whitefish this fall but only ever one brook trout. Don’t target them much though. Any thoughts? Thanks

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Josh, thanks for the comment. Nope, never fished Whitefish Lake, only harder to reach interior lakes. You're a very lucky man, hopefully you realize that. :) I'm somewhat loathe to hand out info on Algonquin. I'll assume you're not aware but this is what I had to deal with not longer after I published this video: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/foi-request-fishing-spot-1.4232556 That said some info is more or less common knowledge and certainly no secret. In that immediate area Welcome, Harry and Rence west of Penn are very good brook trout lakes. Louisa one long portage west of rock is a fabulous lake trout lake and one of the prettiest in the park. You can do a loop starting at Rock, down to Penn, then Welcome, Harry, Rence, up to Louisa then back over to Rock. Have done that trip a few times over the years and it's always good. Cheers

      Canada Fishing Guide well I’d have to say that in my words that person is pathetic and greedy for doing that. Half of the fun of fishing is finding the good spots on your own. I respect you for keeping it a secret, that’s why there is still many trout there. Is the video of you catching the big ones on that trip still up? If so I will have to find it and watch it. Haven’t had a chance to watch more of your videos yet. And yea I feel lucky to be able to have access to a cabin, but not so lucky to have the lease going up over $8000 a year by 2021 We are having a hard time affording it now as is. But we are going to do what we can to get people and money together to keep going. This sadly could be the last summer for us. Best of luck to you and your son on your fishing and your journey. Great job on the tackle choices, Mike - I ordered a dozen or so Grabber spoons. One question i dont think many viewers/subscribers have asked is, what/which St Croix rods you used? All my rods are Fenwick, with the exception of my down-rigging rods - 11 ft Ugly stick all the way for their superior durability, flexibility, and warranty, when thrashing around large chinook salmon.
    Note: I've been eyeballing the Trout Series - TSS70LXF2. It's a 7ft two piece light action. Or perhaps the Premiere 7ft two piece medium light.

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry about the late reply! The last couple of seasons I've been using two different St. Croix rods for brook trout. The first is the 6' 4" Trout Series spinning rod, model TSS64LF2. The second is a 6' Avid Series spinning rod, model AVS60LF. Both are outstanding, but I LOVE that Trout Series rod to death and it's even a bit cheaper! Cheers

    What lures do you recommend for lake trout in Algonquin?

    • @CanadaFishingGuide
      @CanadaFishingGuide  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is not an easy question to answer as it varies from season to season. A variety of different spoons as well as jointed stickbaits like the J11 and J13 Rapala are great choices for trolling early in the season when the fish are active and shallow. This time of year I jig for them with usually white or pearl colored plastics (tube jigs or paddletail minnows) rigged on 11/2 ounce to 3 ounce heads. Also trolling with a 3-way rig (google "wolf river rig"). A 1-3 ounce bell sinker on the dropper, then a small floating minnow bait like an original floating Rapala on the business end. Many experienced anglers will use steel line or leadcore line to troll deeply in the summer for lakers.
